Dem House Candidate in NYC Supports Replacing Jail Time with Art Class

| January 19, 2020

Jamaal Bowman

Poetrooper sends us another odd tale of a prospective Dem candidate with the perfectly reasonable idea of replacing jail time for criminals with art class. One shudders when considering what “art” would be produced by these scofflaws.

This gentleman is seeking to unseat New York Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel, a la AOC and Joe Crowley, for apparently not being sufficiently “woke,” a term I really dislike. One shouldn’t really be surprised, considering Bowman’s background as an “education justice advocate” whatever that is, and Bronx middle school principal. So I suppose giving criminals a time-out is in his mind a perfectly acceptable form of punishment, and making them take a couple hours of art class may give them a new outlet for any anger issues and criminal proclivities they have.

Riiiiight….

By C. Douglas Golden

Jamaal Bowman, a hard-left candidate looking to primary New York Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel out of a seat in New York’s 16th Congressional District, is a former middle school principal.

A lot of the solutions he proposes were no doubt shaped by his milieu.

There is a limit to what I can reasonably understand, however, and that limit has long since been reached when Bowman suggests one way to deal with crime is to let certain offenders take a two-hour art class instead of face court and jail and.

That’s apparently one of the Bowman campaign’s positions, at least when you consider a tweet from the candidate on Wednesday.

Bowman, who’s looking to turn Engel — a powerful member of the Democratic House caucus — into the next Joe Crowley, is a candidate supported by the Justice Democrats, the same group that propelled Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar to victory in 2018.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, he’s a Green New Deal supporter who calls “white male domestic terrorism” the “biggest issue in our country” and thinks police ought to be disarmed.

Sure. Why not? Makes as much sense as anything else they have posited lately. Maybe a little more.

This just keeps getting better and better. Hey Jamaal, I hope you’re ready for the jokes people are going to be making about you once you get elected and try to implement your some of your ideas. A word to the wise, America is not only made up of New York, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and Massachusetts. There are also 44 more states. You can include both coasts as well. There’s also everything in between. And many people who live there, want nothing to do with your ideas.

A Proud Infidel®™

BUT the moment you mention that to someone like him, they’ll either just ignore you or interrupt you with some idiotic liberal diatribe.

Cameron Kingsley

Unfortunately, yes. That’s what happens when you have your head in the clouds.

I was trying to be polite. But, that works too.

According to the article, this idea is already taking place in New York City:

“Bail Reform: New NYC Program Allows Low-Level Offenders To Avoid Jail Time By Taking An Art Course”:

https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2019/10/02/project-reset-brooklyn-district-attorney-eric-gonzalez-brooklyn-museum/

“A new program allows people arrested for minor offenses to avoid jail — even a court appearance — just by visiting a museum.”

“If you’re arrested for fare beating, painting graffiti, shoplifting and other low-level offenses, you can skip a court appearance and avoid jail by taking an art course, CBSN New York’s Marcia Kramer reported Wednesday.”

“It’s about holding people accountable, but doing it in ways that promote human dignity,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said.”

“It’s called “Project Reset,” and is the brain child of Gonzalez. If you’re arrested for a non-violent offense and are given a desk appearance ticket, you can take a two-hour course at the Brooklyn Museum.”

“When you’re finished, the DA declines to prosecute.”

“It requires individuals to view and discuss a piece of art with people they don’t know. They’re asked to create their own art, to think and find meaning in that art,” Gonzalez said.”

“Jessy Singh was arrested for shoplifting but got to participate in the art class instead.”

“It definitely helped me avoid the anxiety of having to attend an actual court date for a mistake I made,” Singh said. “It helped to make me feel human in a system that often criminalizes people for like the smallest of things, bad choices, wrong place wrong time.”

“Some of the funds for the program come from city council.”

“NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan has been very critical of the Brooklyn DA’s jail diversion programs. On Wednesday, a department spokesperson said police want to take a closer look at this one, to see what evidence there is of how an art course can deter criminal behavior.”

“in a system that often criminalizes people for like the smallest of things, bad choices, wrong place wrong time”

That’s kind of the whole point of the criminal justice system. Don’t really expect this dumbshit to get it when the f-ing DA doesn’t seem to understand it.

Minor crimes = pencil sketching
Misdemeanors = watercolors
Felonies = oil painting

Think of all the great art such a program will produce. They could call it “From Gang-banging to Galleries.”

timactual

The smart ones are saying they are already artists—“performance artists”.

What a dipshit! We already have art class for criminals. It’s called graffiti and it’s everywhere. People do things to their neighborhood they wouldn’t do in their houses, well, just in the hallways and stairwells. So, no, art classes are just another way to waste tax dollars while the criminals continue to steal, mug people, murder people and keep their neighborhoods full of drugs.

Not just buildings, ever watch a freight train go by these days? They refer to it as ‘Tagging”. The only “Art” these grubs are interested in is tagging things with gang signs.

What in the ever loving GTFO kinda BS is this moron talking? I got no words. No, on second thought, I got a buncha words. More examples of rewarding bad behavior. All of this goes back to proper home training. Who on this site did not face sure and swift punishment from their parental unit(s) when they showed their azz? Anyone? Bueller? Whether at home, in school, on the job, or in the military? This kind of thinking is what has the prisons/jails overcrowded now. These thugs know that no matter what they do, there is no real punishment. Punishment should be that. It should hurt, one way or another; physically, fiscally, or with a loss of freedom. Here’s a novel idea. Bring back punishment. Put the “low level” criminals on a road crew, with a Georgia yo yo in their hand cutting the grass. A burlap bag to hold the trash that needs picking up; in all kinds of weather. For other criminals make the prisons a place where they don’t want to be instead of a climate controlled, 3 hots and a cot fiefdom where they can still run their criminal enterprises. Pay the guards a decent enough wage so they are not tempted to be bribed to smuggle in dope, cell phones, or other contraband. And if they do the smuggling in, put their azz in the general population with the other thugs. How much repeat business did ol’ Sheriff Joe down in AZ have in his Tent City jail? Get rid of the Club Fed/Motel Jail concept and throw all the crooked politicians and business crooks in with the hood rats and show thru on site cameras what happens to people who commit crimes. Until you show that actions have consequences, you will not have a decrease in the level of crime. The last 50 years of allowing crime to go unpunished is what got us to the level of crime today. Wonder how the idiots that came up with this plan would feel if they had of been the direct victim of the crime? Grrrrrrr… Read more »

Great idea for these peeps to take a course on the art of arson, armed robbery, mugging, rape etc. If I could , I would have put the above in the acronym for the use of deadly force which we had to learn when we had to take from NYS to qualify to be an armed bank guard which we were not. We were involved in the transportation of money and other valuables (teamster local 807) but the state test wasn’t set up for this type of work that we did.

You’re going to be moderated soon, little loser, buh-bye! And BTW, you’re likely about as useful as snow tires and chains on an ice cream truck. Now back to bed there in your Momma’s basement before she finds out what you posted and not only bans you from posting on her computer, she’ll take your XBOX away as well!

How would you know that API doesn’t have a degree? Did he tell you or did he mention it somewhere else on this site? Even if you’re correct, I will not take your word for it because of how insufferable you are. And as far as I’m concerned, you don’t need a degree to homeschool your child (or children). You just have to know what you are doing and be sure you are preparing them for reality. Not coddle them.

A Proud Infidel®™️

He’s not the first troll whose head I live in rent-free.

Commissioner Wretched

Hey, Wingnut … I was an educator for 27 years. I have a doctorate in education. I was there when the foolishness known as PBIS was started in my system.

It is garbage. With a capital “G”.

With the current state of education today, I think API is doing exactly the right thing with API Jr. Homeschooling is the way to avoid leftist indoctrination which substitutes for education these days.

Cameron Kingsley

Amen Commissioner Wretched.

A Proud Infidel®™️

Hey CW, wingnut sounds like some college dweeb of a snowflake who’s chasing a Degree in something like Gender Studies or something as worthless while mooching off of his parents for whatever he wants, his projection earlier made me laugh at him!

Another rocket scientist a la AOC, the Brain Donor Squad and Hank “Guam Gonna Capsize” Johnson… just what the House needs. Another dim bulb in the coal mine of life – since they’re all about coddling the convicts shouldn’t we be making sure they have nice warm blankies, milk and cookies before bed and ask permission before searching their cells for contraband? And make the release of these clowns conditional on them being housed in the neighborhood of the politicians who pushed these nonsensical reforms. Prison should be a place to be feared, I’m all for putting the absolute worst (along with Chomos) on Johnston Island and leaving them there – no need for guards no way for them to get away to anywhere…
