U.S. Navy to Name Aircraft Carrier After Pearl Harbor Hero Doris Miller

| January 18, 2020

Petty Officer Second Class Doris Miller

Mason sends us the outstanding news the Navy will name an Aircraft Carrier after Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller, the first Black American to be awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest valor award in the US Military.

The Navy expects to make the announcement on Monday at Pearl Harbor, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

Miller was honored for using a machine gun on the USS West Virginia to return fire against airplanes during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The 22-year-old Miller was collecting laundry when the attack alarm went off. A torpedo destroyed his usual battle station so he went on deck to carry wounded sailors to safety before he received orders to aid the severely wounded captain.

“He subsequently manned a 50-cal. Browning anti-aircraft machine gun until he ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship,” the Navy said, adding that Miller was not trained to use the gun.

Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, the head of the Pacific Fleet, gave the Navy cross to Miller in May 1942 in Pearl Harbor.

Miller died after a Japanese submarine torpedoed the ship he was serving on in November 1943.

The USS Miller, a destroyer escort, has also been named in his honor.

“I think that Doris Miller is an American hero simply because of what he represents as a young man going beyond the call of what’s expected,” said Doreen Ravenscroft, a team leader for the Doris Miller Memorial.

Ravenscroft said Miller’s story was so extraordinary because a black man was not allowed to use a gun in the military in 1941.

“Without him really knowing, he actually was a part of the Civil Rights movement because he changed the thinking in the Navy,” Ravenscroft said.

Two of Miller’s nieces will be on hand to hear the announcement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this Monday.

Naming an aircraft carrier after an enlisted sailor is a departure from the trend of naming aircraft carriers after U.S. presidents and members of Congress.

“Aircraft carriers are generally named for past U.S. presidents. Of the past 14, 10 were named for past U.S. presidents, and two for members of Congress,” according to a report from the Congressional Research Service.

PO2 Miller has been honored on TAH’s Valor Friday, and the entire article may be viewed here: Breitbart.

Hand Salute. Ready, Two!
Thanks, Mason.

Better to name a warship after a genuine hero than a career politician.

You people are insane politically correct idiots,an aircraft carrier named after a petty officer?A destroyer, fine and dandy, but this true, but enlisted hero does NOT DESERVE this honor, period!!!

Combat Historian

Thank God the next carrier will not be named for LBJ, slick willy, or obamao….

Firebase

So if an aircraft carrier can be named after a heroic Petty Officer, why can’t a helicopter carrier be named after a heroic Gunnery Sergeant, like John Basilone? Maybe the Navy’s ship-naming protocols are undergoing revisions?

Firebase

We did, but then the next day an aircraft carrier was named after a Petty Officer, rather than a president. So, maybe the protocols are being updated?

Jus Bill

WELL deserved!

BZ Big Navy. You got it right this time. PO2 Doris Miller was a true Warrior Hero and died a hero’s death. He is most deserving of this additional honor having another fighting ship named for him. Served on two floating Artillery Platforms and now having a floating Aerial Artillery Platform capable of bringing all sorts of dam dam down on the bad guys.

Wonder how many sailors will put in for a transfer to this Warrior’s Vessel to get off of a vessel named for….well…you know?

AMEN on what you wrote, KoB and AMEN on other folks comments.

Thank You, AW1Ed for posting this and as always, to Mason for sharing.

Rest In Peace, Doris Miller. A True Hero who gave his Life for our Country. Salute.

He Will Now Never Be Forgotten.

Kudos to the US Navy and someone correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t that have to be signed off by the POTUS? Once again President Donald J. Trump proves himself to be THE worst racist ever!

Firebase

George W. Bush was called a “racist” as well (famously by Kanye West), but he’s the one who appointed the first African-American Secretary of State, and then did it a second time, with a black female.

Yep, and as soon as that happened, the libtards on the left tarred and feathered them with epithets like “Uncle Tom” and “Aunt Jemimah” but as soon as Powell endorsed B. Hussein 0bama, his shit no longer stunk!

Can’t tell you how hearing this news made my day. Doris Miller is a truly inspirational figure. For the last several years ship naming announcements were such ho-hum events or worse were severe eye-rolling moments of actual pain. What a turn of events. Couldn’t be more proud that we’ll be hearing about the deployment of the USS Miller battle group in a few years. Looking forward to the Mighty Miller bringing some thunder upon our enemies.

Jim

Well, how about the uss Kris kyle, huh dummy? At best kyle only deserves the title of a destroyer,or frigate, as does miller, period!!!

Bob Drennan

Will the galley taste great or be less filling?

It’s a fucking joke..

Count me among those who didn’t see the humor. Yes, I got the play on words. Can’t quite make the connection between it and the honorable Doris Miller. Your explanation did nothing to allay the thought that perhaps you were demeaning his service in food service. Or not. Whatever.

11B-Mailclerk

Your comment sure was tasteless.

I served on a frigate named for a marine, medal of Honor recipient, and still love that fact, but dorie miller was a 2nd class petty officer, and it is asinine beyond reasoning, to name and aircraft carrier after him,why not a carrier named for the Sullivan brothers, hell, all five died after volunteering, during ww2,alliteration their cruiser the uss Juneau sank, killing all the brothers,in one action of war.Yes,THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER,THE USS THE SULLIVANS,way more deserving, period, end of arguement!!!
