Bad Day for the Navy

| December 6, 2019

Shootings at two naval installations have claimed the lives of three victims with seven injured at NAS Pensacola, Florida, and another incident at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Hawaii, with two fatalities and one injured before the shooter turned his gun on himself.

Pensacola:

The gunman who opened fire Friday morning at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, fatally shooting three people, has been identified as an aviation student from Saudi Arabia as investigators are looking into whether the attack is terrorism-related.

The shooter — who was wielding a handgun, despite firearms not being allowed on base — was confronted and taken out by a pair of responding officers, officials say. Two people were killed at the scene while a third victim died after being rushed to a local hospital. Seven others suffered injuries and are undergoing treatment, including the two officers, one of whom was shot in the arm and the other in the knee. Both are expected to survive.

Pearl Harbor:

New details have emerged about the sailor who fatally shot two people and injured a third before turning a pistol on himself at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard on Wednesday, just days before veterans observe the 78th anniversary of the infamous Japanese attack that catapulted the country into World War II.

The shooter was identified Thursday as 22-year-old G. Romero, a military official told the Associated Press.

An updated official U.S. Navy incident report obtained Thursday by Fox News describes the shooter as a 22-year-old male active duty sailor assigned to the fast-attack submarine USS Columbia. Neither the gunman nor the victims have been officially identified yet.

The shooter “opened fire on shipyard personnel with his M4 service rifle and then turned his M9 service pistol on himself,” the report says.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated that the government of Saudi Arabia needs to atone for these victims and their families. He has spoken to President Trump about the shooting, he told reporters during a press conference Friday afternoon. “They are going to owe a debt here given that this is one of their individuals.”

“Anyone who serves in the Navy knows that this is a special place, Naval Air Station Pensacola,” DeSantis added. “All these brave warriors who wear the wings, they come through here for flight training. And so this is a dark day for a very great place.”

At Pearl Harbor, all three victims were civilian Department of Defense employees. The wounded victim was in critical condition, the report said, though that person’s injuries weren’t specified.

No clear motive has emerged in the aftermath of the attacks and it’s not clear if the shooters and victims had any prior relationship or even knew each other.

Photo School used to be at Pensacola. Nice place. P-Beach had beautiful sands and there was always a breeze.
Something must have set off both of those shooters. Now we’ll never know.

Went to Navy Recruiting Orientation Unit (NORU) there 20 years ago as an Officer Recruiter and back again for the Medical Recruiter Academy. I remember seeing the old seaplane hangers and ramps and the historic buildings on the base.

1996 for recruiting school.

I wonder if they’re still sticking the students in that crappy hotel outside the base?

Aside from that, easiest five weeks of my Navy career.

I checked out the recent info about NORU and it looks like they still are. Both times I went there I was lucky to be put up in CPO barracks – and the NRD payed for me to have a car for MedCruit!

Allegedly the Pearl shooter was facing Captain’s Mast.

That’s the scuttlebutt going around our office (i work on the Hickam side of the joint base).

Please enjoy a cool one for me at the Golden Anchor. Had a great tour there first at HQ PACAF, then the O-Club, then tenth Puka and finally the golf course clubhouse. Had to drag me off the island kicking and screaming when PCS rolled around. Oh, that followed three years at CINCPAC (grining).

I was shocked when I read that story, that was the boat my brother was assigned to, before he got out, and took a hard left turn..
As to the sailors being unhappy with his commanders, while in no way justifying such actions, if the command is the same as when my brother was on-board (during the start of the second gulf war), I can understand not being happy. My brother told stories of the XO, almost nosediving the boat into the bottom of the gulf…Did NOT sound like the best, or most competent command staff in the world..

Pensacola shooter was a Saudi. Blue on Green sleeper?

A Proud Infidel®™️

The whole Installation is pretty much a huge gun-free zone which guaranteed that goat-raping vermin a free fire zone full of unarmed victims.

This also happened: makes three.

The driver of the vehicle who ran the gate and killed the Sailor has been charged with manslaughter.

So sad.

Geez. Every Christmas his family will have this memory association.

May the Lord have compassion on them.

How many must die at the hands of the Religion of Peace. It is dictated by their Religion to kill the “infidel?” Why is that so hard to understand? I feel it won’t be long before we see the same kind of crap here that the European countries that let so many of them in see.

God’s Peace be a comfort to the victims. The money that DeSantis is going to try to get out of the Saudi gubmint sure won’t.

I saw the Governor’s comments on the local 6-O-clock and don’t approve. Sounded like a solicitation.

I don’t approve.

I honestly wonder what the ever-loving fuck is going through the minds of the commands that do this shit.

1990 USS Buffalo–topside watch commits suicide.
2000 USS Los Angeles–topside watch commits suicide.
2009 USS Hawaii–topside watch commits suicide.
2019 USS Columbia–topside watch kills 2, then commits suicide.

These are just cases that immediately come to mind (I was a crewmember on the first boat when it occurred.)

The common thread? Junior sailor, either non-qual or recently qualified, on report or going to mast, then immediately shoved on watch with a weapon and ammunition.

Big Navy hasn’t learned jack shit.

I have a friend who is a plank owner on Seawolf. Has some ‘interesting’ stories…
He says the group he sailed with is dwindling rapidly. Know another guy, was on a Boomer.
I’m no rocket scientist, but as a twice-deployed Infantry guy, I can look at what I know of the submariner community and say certain aspects f**k some individuals up, bad.
I don’t know what to do for them, but considering the conditions they go through, especially the Attack guys, they’ve definitely earned my respect and concern.
The Seawolf guy constantly downplays his service, “I was never shot at…”, blah blah blah. Dude! You were under the water for 8 months, STRAIGHT! If given a choice I’D RATHER be SHOT AT!
I’m not saying they’re wounded kittens or anything, but let them know they’re part of the team!
Thank you to the Subbers!

NHSparky

I applied for PCU Seawolf, thankfully didn’t get it (shipyards have a nasty habit of making boat crews wish they were at sea.)

While true, submarine life isn’t for everyone, I found getting through is a mindset much like being infantry or what have you. Namely, it was the, “don’t mean nuthin” attitude. Underway extended? Surprise ORSE? Liberty port canceled? Shipyard blame you for their fuckups?

Don’t mean nuthin, man. Not a thing.

These guys either never learned, or forgot that most valuable lesson.

Before I got out the Big A Army was pushing resiliency training.
“the power or ability to return to the original form, position, etc., after being bent, compressed, or stretched; elasticity”
Measure that against a zero defect mentality of Senior Leadership and that definition sounds suspiciously like ‘IDGAF’.

Wish I had the power to cause this Muzzie coward to be wrapped in a fresh pigskin and promptly shipped back to Riyadh right after the autopsy is completed. I would then send his three pals who were videoing the carnage directly to Gitmo.
