Jury acquits man who shot ex-boxer Fouad Zeton’s son, claimed self-defense

BY MATT SLEDGE
An Orleans Parish jury on Wednesday night acquitted the man who killed ex-boxer Fouad Zeton’s son but claimed he did so in self-defense.

The jury acquitted 22-year-old James Nero after roughly four hours of deliberation. He was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Aug. 2, 2018, shooting of his friend Fouad Zeton Jr. in the French Quarter.

Much of the trial hinged on warring interpretations of surveillance camera video which caught the final moments of Zeton’s life outside the Attiki Bar and Grill on Decatur Street.

Witnesses testified that the pair argued inside the bar because Nero, a bartender, wanted to close the establishment, but Zeton wanted to remain there and smoke a hookah pipe.

Outside on the street, Nero pulled out a gun. The video showed him pointing the gun at Zeton, backing up the length of the block and finally firing after Zeton made a punching motion toward him.

JSO searching for two masked men in Southside shooting

By: Meghan Moriarty
Two masked men fired a dozen shots into a home on Grampian Drive North on Tuesday.

A grandmother and her grandchildren were home at the time of the shooting. No one was hurt.

A neighbor told Action News Jax a small gray car — possibly a Honda — drove up onto the curb and the occupant began firing bullets into the home and at the white car in the driveway. A young man was inside the white car at the time. A witness said he fired back in self-defense.

This happened around 12 p.m. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office secured the scene and laid out 13 evidence markers next to several shell casings.

Today brings us a respectable one DOT, one incarcerated, and two in the wind Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes. The weekend is nigh, get some range time in.

As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness. — Justice William O. Douglas, US Supreme Court (1939-75)

Shooting through a door is never justified
The legal theory is that you are not in danger until they breach the door
( unless they start shooting they the door)
