To make it easier, here’s this week’s trivia column! DID YOU KNOW…? Did Elvis Presley’s manager promote a dislike for the singer? By Commissioner Wretched Do you know what blinkskudd is? Until a few weeks ago, neither did I. That’s when I saw a photograph on the Internet that totally captivated me. It was a shot of a parent, tossing a baby up in the air in a moment of fun and joy … and flying right over the baby was a stork. The expression on that precious baby’s face is one of absolute happiness, and the arms of the parent are raised to catch the child … and it appears as though the stork has dropped off another successful delivery. A friend of mine from Norway said that the photo was a perfect example of blinkskudd, a Norwegian word which has no exact translation into English. Roughly, though, it means, “a photograph taken at precisely the right moment.” Darned good word, if you ask me. May your upcoming Thanksgiving holiday be full of proper blinkskudd moments! I hope you have a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving, friends, and know that I am truly thankful that you take a few minutes out of your day and read the silly words that I write. You all rock way more than Plymouth ever did. Did you know … … the Native Americans who helped the Pilgrims through their first winter already spoke English? Samoset (1590-1653) and Squanto (born Tisquantum, 1585-1622) were already able to speak English before meeting the settlers, who had established Plymouth Colony in 1620. (I thought that, since next week is Thanksgiving and all, I’d sneak that one in.) … if you are between 32 and 61 years of age, you have an average of only $5,000 in retirement savings? SFC D

Very steep approach followed by an extremely short roll.

Mason

Always liked The Piano Man, and that just solidifies it. That’s a classy thing to do.

11B-Mailclerk

The “odds” item seems odd. We elect one person as President every four or eight years. A handful of folks hit lottery jackpots every year. WL > WP

Commissioner Wretched

But the item refers to the odds of one individual person hitting the lottery or being elected president, not an overall statistic.

11B-Mailclerk

Yes, it does.

Announce your candidacy, and buy a lottery ticket. You might win a few bucks. You ain’t getting elected.

That game is -far- more rigged than lotteries.

Mason

Speaking of odds, I recently fell down the rabbit hole of the birthday paradox.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_problem

In a room of just 23 people, there’s a 50% chance that two or more will share a birthday. With just 70 people, there’s a 99.9% chance that two will share a birthday.

So when you work with someone who has the same birthday and your office is small, it’s just math. It’s not as random or unlikely as it would seem on the face of it.

LC

So when you work with someone who has the same birthday and your office is small, it’s just math. It’s not as random or unlikely as it would seem on the face of it.

Not to nitpick, and I’m sure you know this but I’m clarifying for others – it’s not that you have good chance of sharing a birthday with someone in a small office, it’s that two people have a good chance. You have a (roughly) 0.27% chance (1/365).

If you want to fall down another math rabbit hole, check out the Monty Hall problem:

Psh. You’re as bad as my wife. 😉

History Lesson For Today.

There are probably many of us on TAH who remembered this.

My classmates and I received this news by our Principal via our school’s intercom system.

We were sent home after the announcement.

Where were you on 22 November 1963, 1300 Hours Central Standard Time.

26Limabeans

Mr Wheelers freshman science class.
Announced over the PA.
class was not dismissed.

ChipNASA

Probably shitting my diaper in a crib somewhere in suburban Maryland. I was about 6 months old.

Reagan’s assassination attempt, I remember.
I was getting off the school bus in Bethesda when the call came over the driver’s radio (Most of them were firefighters and such) …”President Kennedy has just been shot …*pause* I mean President Reagan has been shot…” I was a Junior in High School.

SFC D

I was probably doing something similar, Chip. It was my 364th day on earth. I do remember the RFK and MLK asassinations, though. Didn’t really understand them at the time.

Friend

In Ms Browns class for Kennedy…and in the Price Is Right audience when Bob Barker made the announcement….

OWB

In study hall. No PA. The principal came in to tell us.

Not too many folks in my neighborhood had voted for him, but everyone properly mourned his passing because he was our president. Every last one of us. School was likely called off for some of the funeral activities because I remember watching it on the neighbor’s TV.

David

6th grade, Spoede School. Mr. Schweis came in and called the class to silence. We were out of school maybe three days afterward… TV was monopolized on all channels.

Thunderstixx

I was in school, but we were let out early after all the busses got to where they were needed.
President Kennedy, probably the last decent Democrat to hold office, was buried on my 8’Th Birthday.
I played with a model rocket set as they almost immediately renamed parts of Cape Canaveral Cape Kennedy.
My model rockets were Atlas rockets, the same ones used in the Mercury Project series of flights.
I believe I saw every last Mercury, Gemini and almost all of Apollo Program launches but definitely watched all the Moon Landings.
Congrats to 5/77 FA. Like Glen Reynolds says to the GOP regarding the 2020 election…..Don’t get cocky….

Ex-PH2

The strangest part about this dreadful incident is that my father had been preparing a production of the Scottish play (where the usurper has the rightful king executed and tries to take his place). It was supposed to open on Thanksgiving weekend.

There is a tradition in theater that if you are preparing to run that play, and you use the name of it during production, something will happen that will cancel your opening night. .

And that is exactly what happened. My father ignored that superstition, and President Kennedy was assassinated before opening night.

And frankly, I thought for the longest time that LBJ had something to do with it… but that’s just me.

26Limabeans

Wrong button, sorry.

“LBJ had something to do with it”

He had good reason as he was about to be
indicted for election fraud. When JFK was
murdered that all went away.

Just An Old Dog

For any fans of Stephen King there is both a Novel and a Mini-Series on HULU called ” 11-22-63″ about a guy who goes back in time to prevent the JFK assassination.
There is a lot of good history in it and excellent read/ watch.

I want my taxpayer money returned for letting this author graduate from a military academy.

USAF RET

What a dick. He left out inventing the smiley face. And the top grad Zoomie who bought and wrote all of that BS makes me embarrassed of my service.

The Stranger

Wow. That is one dumb-ass Zoomie! That was the dumbest fucking article I have ever read and it stretches credulity to the breaking point. This Mr. L is like Forrest Gump with this complex back story…bank robber daddy, met Whitey Bulger, the “join the Army or go to jail” meme, a little bit of “Travellin’ Man” by Ricky Nelson with his foreign love, the Hanoi Hilton, his indirect involvement with Frank Lucas’s drug smuggling operation (also covered in a Tom Clancy novel); I bailed at that point. It just got to be too much. By the way, would the Viet Cong, who I thought were a guerrilla force in South Vietnam, actually send anyone that they captured all the way back to Hanoi? More importantly, were there any captured enlisted infantrymen housed in the Hanoi Hilton? I genuinely don’t know, but it would seem to me that it would be real easy to check this story since there is a roster of every returned POW from Hanoi. Also, the prisoners from Hanoi weren’t released until 1973 and I don’t recall hearing of any “high speed” rescue missions that would have liberated this dude. This, of course, neglects the fact that by the time our POWs were sent home our combat troops were out of Vietnam so I don’t know how Mr. L would have been involved in a mortuary detail for returning KIAs with no combat operations. Mind you, this is just off the top of my head with no further research, but Mr. L is full of shit. The Air Force Academy really failed this medical student is all I can say.

The Stranger

With regards to Mr. L being liberated, I meant to say that there were no rescue missions that liberated anyone from the Hanoi Hilton prior to their negotiated release, which meant that the earliest he could have gotten home was 1973. By the way, good posts over there by Hack Stone and AverageNCO.

5th/77th FA

What in the ever loving trailer park trash from hell kinda BS is this? Pappy you right, got his inspiration from Tom Clancy or Washington in the Boys of Company C. Body bags from VN? No they were in a Coffin, metal handles. 30 days after the hearing in VN? daHell?? My basic burned up pert near 10 weeks and AIT at Sill was another nearly 9 weeks. And I guess he picked up that Southern drawl in Boston…or the Iowa prison.

Maybe MP could do a FOIA on the author AND Mr. L. One thing for sure…they are both full of it.

The Stranger

Well, KOB, we may need a little more to go on besides “Mr. L.”😂. I mean, with this individual’s underworld connections (Whitey Bulger), he could be “Lucky” Luciano or Tommy Lucchese for all we know.

Anonymous

Not to mention Miami Vice (from the big ‘Nam flashback episode– like, dig it, maaan!):

Combat Historian

Mr. L was secretly liberated by the Son Tay raiders in late 1970 because he was super duper secret squirrel and everyone from POTUS to SECDEF to COMUSMACV had to pretend he didn’t exist; his code name was AGENT ORANGE…(Sarc)

The Stranger

I met a retired Air Force PJ who was a guest at an enlisted dining out who was on that raid. I drew a blank on his name because it was over 10 years ago, but I do seem to remember that he was also part of the Apollo recovery teams and may have taken part in the rescue of the Mayagüez. I’ll have to reach back to some of my former colleagues to confirm, but the only person I found that did all 3 of those things was retired Chief Master Sergeant Wayne Fisk so it may have been him. Now THAT is a guy who has stories to tell, with the added benefit of being true, unlike this “Mr. L” character. That USAFA graduate who wrote that crock-o-crap article may want to learn about REAL veterans who actually accomplished something with their lives.

Mason

Wow. That guy’s getting added to the Valor Friday list. What a career.

The Stranger

Well, at least something positive can come out of this silliness with Mr. L.

Poetrooper

I just left a response to the female commenter who thought it was just such a wonderful Veterans’ day story.

Wouldn’t hurt for some more of you to go over there and put a boot up this young doc’s ass to wake him up a bit or someday he’ll be putting every malingering airman he sees on light duty.

Anonymous

He robbed the Bank of Hanoi while he was there, but the TV networks ripped off his stuff for both Hogan’s Heroes and the A-Team and didn’t give any royalties, too! (Say, where’s Lars? He should be tearing how jacked-up this dude’s story is too.)

The Stranger

It’s actually Kelly’s Heroes, which would mean that Mr. L is Oddball!
I stand corrected, LEGIT!
Just kidding, Mr. L is a scumbag and the medical student is an idiot. The article reminds me of something else though…I wonder if this kid is going to sneak him out of the hospital, hitchhike down to Mississippi with the promise of learning a heretofore unknown Robert Johnson song and end up “cutting heads” against Steve Vai for the old man’s soul?

David

Oddly, just watched that this week for the first time in years! Not sure thee is any such thing as a bad Ry Cooder soundtrack.

The Stranger

Old Ry could play with the best of them and across multiple genres. You could tell he just loved to play, any style, anytime, anywhere, and with anybody.

Mason

LOL – This kid couldn’t smell the bullshit coming off this guy? WTF

“He went directly to boot camp and ‘basically learned to shoot a gun and play dead.'”

Yup, that’s all I got out of it too. HAHAHAHA No tales of being WIA while on KP duty?

The Stranger

Also, no hair-raising tales of the “Buffer Rodeo”?

Anonymous

Or the dude who wouldn’t wash his ass?

The Stranger

Hey, I had that guy in my Flight/Platoon both times I went to Basic. That shit ain’t no joke!

A Proud Infidel®™️

He COULD HAVE been put on KP so much that he was declared MIA and ended up being a SOL SOB of a POS!!!

rgr769

I loved the “homeless” bum’s fake factoid that his entire platoon was captured by the Viet Cong. I never heard of an entire platoon (35 to 40 men) being captured by the VC. Maybe his platoon consisted of a half dozen other messkit repairmen being held by the whorehouse mamasan because they failed to pay in full for services rendered.

The Stranger

Oh, so a typical night at Mona’s in Clarksville, TN?😂
“You buy me lady drink, Joe?”

Combat Historian

I think in “The Deer Hunter”, a whole bunch of GIs from the same platoon were captured by the NVA and placed in those infamous “tiger cages”. The poser obviously ripped off this factoid from the Deer Hunter movie segment, but then this posering assclown probably wouldn’t even know the size difference between a fire team, squad, or platoon…

rgr769

Would anyone here want this gullible medico working on them? Not likely.

A March 1969 newspaper article was discovered about the deceased. Supposely he was a SP5 with the United States Army Support Command in Saigon and was the “Editor” of Hi-Lite, a Bi-Monthly newspaper/magazine.

The article he wrote for Hi-Lite that was mentioned in his hometown newspaper? Well, it was about the Army’s procedure in notifying Next of Kin of those who were Missing in Action or Killed in Action.

Gee. I wonder how his relatives thought he was a Prisoner of War for “a short time”.

And being spit on? What type of obituary is this when a relative writes “Like many other returning Vets he was ostracized and actually spit upon at the Corvallis Airport.”

Not to quibble over minor details like the only name you mention, but it was Feinstein’s driver, not Pelosi’s, and reportedly the FBI concluded he didn’t share anything of value. And, for that matter, he didn’t have access to anything of value (via a lack of clearance), and may have not even known he was acting as an asset of China’s MSS, given it was a ‘soft’ recruitment.

If there was something to convict him on, they’d have done so. But he was fired, and presumably is still watched.

I should also point out that since Feinstein is on the Senate Intelligence Committee, having a Chinese agent is worse than if he was working for Pelosi. And like we should believe nothing of value to China was shared. Yeah, ri-i-ght, just like nothing significant was compromised on Hillary’s homebaked email server.

LC

I think the idea that her driver had contacts with MSS is abhorrent.. but given an investigation was done, and absent any evidence to the contrary, I’m inclined to go with what the FBI apparently said : that nothing significant was compromised.

Do you have evidence to the contrary? If so, please do share it with the FBI. I have no love for Feinstein, her driver, the MSS or anyone who might jeopardize national security.

Constant association with the highest levels of California government folks is “nothing of value” ? A US Senator? On the Intel Committee? Someone flunked Counterespionage 101.

Drivers overhear lots of phone calls.

Drivers often have access to all sorts of paperwork in that rolling office.

Drivers can inject all sorts of comment.

Drivers amass an amazing amount of “who’s who” on their cargo. This helps with further Agent deployment.

Drivers can often place small objects in all sorts of useful places. And retrieve them.

Anyone who has ever been a driver for anyone, feel free to chip in.

Nothing of value? He was Helen Keller? Pull the other one.

LC, if that driver was on Beijing’s payroll, she was utterly compromised. Count on it.

Having done a stint as a private limo driver for a real POS I saw and heard things I wish I hadn’t on a regular basis.

As I just said above, I may have my suspicions about him, given his contact (unwitting or not) with MSS… but there was an investigation, and nothing happened other than him being fired. What are we to conclude from this? Rgr769 asked when they were going to convict him – and the obvious answer is there is no evidence to do so.

That’s not the same as him being completely innocent, but asking for a conviction without evidence is not exactly in line with the judicial process for a just society.

Let me switch the parties up – I have deep suspicions about Jared Kushner, given that MBS bragged about having him ‘in his pocket’ and he’s alleged to have used his access to look up intelligence unrelated to his needs, intelligence that then lead to MBS rounding up enemies in KSA. This is a guy who had to amend his SF-86 multiple times, and who -a bit like Biden’s son?- has zero experience relevant to his roles. Now, if some liberal asks why isn’t JK convicted yet, the simple answer is because apparently the FBI found no evidence (or, in both this case and the above, ‘insufficient evidence’) to convict.

Do I like either of these situations? Hell no. But I don’t have any evidence supporting a conviction, either. Just a lot of ‘possibilities’.

If you have evidence that Feinstein’s driver did nefarious things, I’m sure the FBI would love to hear from you.

As a side note about MSS, they operate primarily via a numbers game, and less a ‘competence’ game – while a skilled agent would surely be able to surreptitiously plant and retrieve bugs and communicate covertly with handlers, this guy was (again, allegedly) a ‘soft’ recruit who didn’t even know the guy he talked with was MSS. He’s not highly trained, and any overt communications would’ve likely been intercepted. That they (apparently) did not find any does support nothing of value was leaked, despite how horrifying it is to think an MSS agent had access to Feinstein.

rgr769

Yeah, let’s give enemy agents the benefit of the doubt just like your Progda does our President.

LC

Again, you asked when they were going to convict (Feinstein’s) driver — do you think we should convict him absent evidence? Yes or no?

11B-Mailclerk

Why do you believe the counterintelligence folks announce the truth about these things? They almost never do.

You do recall some folks saying there was nothing felonious about Clinton transmitting, or causing to be transmitted, classified info on a bootleg server, said server being in flagrant violation of recordkeeping statutes, and that server being wiped when clearly subject to subpoena.

“We didn’t find anything”. “No reasonable prosecutor would…”

Riiiiiight.

Cmon man, you are smarter than that.

LC

I’ve known a good number of people in counterintelligence – when something bleeds over into the public sphere, they try to minimize what gets out, but they don’t say one thing in private and another in public. That’s just inviting disaster, given how leaky DC is.

And again, as I just asked above, this whole discussion was predicated by rgr769 asking when Feinstein’s driver is going to be convicted. Should we convict him without evidence? If yes, don’t you think that’s a wee bit dangerous? And if no, doesn’t that say there is insufficient evidence?

The identity of the DoJ lawyer who altered information used for a FISA renewal used against a Trump campaign employee has been revealed and guess what? He was a top lawyer for the Mueller investigation.

You do remember that objective Mueller investigative team, right? And even playing with a stacked deck, those rat bastards could find nothing for the Schiff Show to impeach on.

A little light reading from the NTSB about a light sport pilot a couple of you might know.
https://app.ntsb.gov/pdfgenerator/ReportGeneratorFile.ashx?EventID=20180122X32841&AKey=1&RType=HTML&IType=FA

Mick

Interesting and informative report, Chief; thanks. Hopefully AW1Ed or one of the other TAH Admins will see this report and hang it as a separate stand-alone post.

After reading the report, it looks like our highly esteemed light sport pilot didn’t do a very good job of monitoring his Vno airspeed. From the description of the aircraft’s maneuvers at altitude prior to the crash, he may have also become spatially disoriented and/or got his aircraft into an unusual attitude that he didn’t have the knowledge or skills to successfully recover from, which in turn may have led him to exceed his Vne airspeed.

“According to the Pilot’s Operating Handbook, the maximum structural cruise speed (Vno) was 108 knots, the caution band was 108 to 136 knots, and the never exceed speed (Vne) was 136 knots.”

Or, he may have intentionally dumped the nose and rolled the aircraft inverted with the intent of flying the aircraft into the ground.

In any case, whatever he was doing, the mishap forensic evidence shows that he exceeded his Vne which in turn resulted in structural failure (left wing broke off at the wing root).

It is also significant to note that there was no fuel remaining in the aircraft’s fuel tank, which explains why there was no post-crash fire. Perhaps he also ran out of fuel (again) in flight, panicked and “stopped flying the airplane” to focus on the fuel problem, which subsequently may have caused him to lose control of the aircraft and exceed Vne.

The content of the report just screams “poor airmanship, poor headwork, and poor situational awareness”. It’s clear that it wasn’t a question of “if” he was going to crash that aircraft, but “when”.

Oh well; at least he didn’t take anyone with him.

Another associate noted that the report states that the seat was found some 30 feet from the plane. So he did make one last flight without gas.

Hey all, did you see this from Bloomberg “News”?

“We will continue our tradition of not investigating Mike (and his family and foundation ) and we will extend the same policy to his rivals in the Democratic primaries. We cannot treat Mike’s democratic competitors differently from him,” Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait said in the memo, which was confirmed by a spokesperson.”

Nope no media bias there.. maybe seagull can explain that to us…
