A Little Review of Statistics

| September 29, 2019

With primaries coming up sometime soon, and “take yer guns” on the lips of some Democrats (e.g., Swallwell, O’Rourke, Buttigieg, Durbin, et al.) when they get the microphone and camera, it’s time a few statistics were brought up about the CDC’s statistics on death rates.

Homicide by gun as a cause of death is NOT the leading cause of death in the USA, per the CDC.

Of the leading causes of death in the U.S., death by homicide isn’t as prevalent as it often seems. Homicide or assault deaths affect 5 per 100,000 people in the United States, killing nearly 16,000 people every year. About 11,000 of those deaths relate specifically to firearm-related homicides.

Gun-related deaths rank last, at #15.

Statistics are at this link: https://www.cheatsheet.com/health-fitness/these-are-the-leading-causes-of-death-in-the-u-s.html/

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the USA, NOT guns. Accidents, including vehicular accidents rank even lower than heart disease.  The CDC estimates about 610,000 people die from this condition every year. Your age, race, ethnicity, family history, and daily lifestyle behaviors all contribute to your heart disease risk.  Unfortunately, it’s the leading cause of death among both men and women. – article

610,000 people dying from heart disease-related causes versus 11,000 homicides by someone using a gun seems like an incredibly wide gap to use as propaganda to take away someone’s right to engage in self-defense through legal gun ownership.

It seems to me that finding a way to reduce heart disease is far more important than the issue of guns.

Careful. You might inspire the Donks to ban Assault Burgers, and Saturday Night Sliders.

I have assaulted many a burger in my days. They lost the fight and were consumed in the gusto. Just today some Applewood smoked bacon and a stacked of real butter pancakes drowned in cane syrup, sacrificed on the plate altar.

The gunz, food, or lifestyle Gestapo are everywhere. I’m gonna die, eventually if not sooner, of something. I will go out with a full tummy and a happy palate. Cookie?

Screw these control freaks; sit down, shut up, and quit trying to run my life. I can neither confirm nor deny that this 12 gg shottie within hands reach has been leaning in that corner for 6 years without a single involuntary discharge.

I believe the Khmer Rouge exemplified that attitude – as do socialists/communists everywhere.

Huey Jock

I had personal friends that were the victims of the Khmer Rouge. I grieve their losses.

If the government admitted that guns are not the problem and heart disease truly is…they would be forced to explain why they made us all fat!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7vJZAYoFPk
explains it pretty well. The Food Pyramid that we were all taught in school, and its war on saturated fats is about as shoddy of science as the Global Warming initiative! (Yes, the earth warms and cools, but Humans have about as much input to it as ants do to deforestation!) One single Volcano erupting puts the last six hundred years to shame on “green house gas” emissions! How many have erupted in the last six hundred years? I can count six in just my lifetime.

Ouch

We might be able to use Kale for superfund site cleanups, but it needs to go in a Hazmat landfill, not salads.

Kale ice cream??? Kill. Me…Now!!!

The heavy metal poisoning may help explain the mental (in)abilities of lefties.

According to the “diet” sheet I got from my doctor after my third kidney stone, kale is on the list of no-no’s due to it being high in oxalates

SFC D

Did you know that if you cook your kale in coconut oil, it’s much easier to scrape it into the trash can?

If the dems were that smart, they would just ban republicans.

I’ve got a crazy idea just to let the dems have control for four years. Absolute control.

Just to see how fucked up things get.

It would be a nightmare and even worse to try to fix it.

No need.

San Francisco.

Or Caracas.

Chiraq, and that would spread all over, the day after the gun confiscation from citizens ends.

Didn’t they get it for two years under Obama? I don’t think the economy could handle four!

Just TRY TO take the lard that I like to cook fries in and see what happens, let alone the Bacon I enjoy…
As to the self-commissioned Diet Police types, I can honestly say that I have multiple Ancestors who were reached their Nineties that enjoyed eggs and bacon as well as food fried in lard all their lives and I’ll do the same!

They will simply never understand that lack of control by someone other than me needs no alteration in my behavior at all. Except perhaps to drive defensively, and try to stay out of the way of those who find some way to abuse just about anything they can reach. Or steal.

We who are already obeying the law don’t need more laws. They just want to control us. It really is that simple. Can’t have folks running around loose who are willing and able to take care of themselves.

Duane

I look at the top 5 killers, and I have to wonder – if the same money being spent on the “anti-gun” legislation and efforts was being spent on any one of these, how much of an impact would it have? The canned “but if it saves even 1 child” should be responded to with a “but if we can cure cancer, wouldn’t that save more than 1 child?” – I would personally love to hear their answers on that.

11B-Mailclerk

Good grief. If they actually solve a problem, they have to stop scolding and shrieking about it.

They can’t allow that.

ArmyATC

Very true. Democrats held both the House and Senate during the first two years of the Obama administration. They could have done anything they wanted on gun control. But all wwe heard were crickets. They didn’t bang the gun control drum again until after they lost control of Congress. To me, that’s proof that the Dems really don’t want to change anything. They simply want “issues” they can use to beat Republicans.

Better screening of Donk fundraisers might better protect children.

Fyrfighter

The anti-vaxxers allow it to spread, but it doesn’t pop up from nowhere… in most cases, it starts with un-screened illegals bringing it from whatever third world shithole they came from. Both issues need to be addressed in order to actually solve the problem.

Mason

I wouldn’t blame illegals for all of it. The cosmopolitan anti-vaxxing world traveler is just as much a threat vector. The same people that are against vaccines are the ones who love going to third world shitholes because they need to virtue signal that they care.

Fyrfighter

Good point. Add that to the list of issues that need to be addressed… stop allowing those fools back in without proper vaccinations, or quarantine them for a month upon return, an that might slow it down..

11B-Mailclerk

Let’s not add yet another arbitrary power to detain to the everyday playbook for ordinary folks, hmmm?

Some flight attendant with messed-up paperwork spends a month in jail? Some PFC on emergency leave with a “missing shot record” gets locked uo because he pissed off a medic or clerk?

Just think of all the incompetence or malice you attribute to your political opponents.

Nah. Has to be a better way.

Fyrfighter

Fair points all 11B

I don’t like using those stats or arguments because the counter-arguments are “we need vehicles for the nation’s commerce,” and “heart disease and other medical issues are self imposed or hereditary.” Simply pointing out that other issues cause far more deaths in the US opens one up to charges of deflection. Or the anti-gun fanatics simply say they are going to push for restrictions on the things that cause those deaths also. These are the people who ban plastic straws, so it’s not a great leap for them to go after your cheeseburger. A better argument, in my opinion (YMMV) is to attack the anti-gun argument directly using easy to find facts. For example, there are several studies that show we truly don’t have a “gun problem” nationwide. The vast majority of “gun violence” and “gun murders” are restricted to several cities and counties. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2017/jan/09/special-report-fixing-gun-violence-in-america https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/mar/20/mapping-gun-murders-micro-level-new-data-2015 https://crimeresearch.org/2017/04/number-murders-county-54-us-counties-2014-zero-murders-69-1-murder/ This data shows that if one doesn’t live in certain neighborhoods in certain cities and isn’t involved in gangs, drugs, or other criminal behaviors, the risk of being a victim of “gun violence” is approximately .1%. Some of the information may be a bit older, but it’s still relevant. To the argument that there is no reason to own a gun because they are rarely used in self defense, simply turn to this report; https://reason.com/2018/04/20/cdc-provides-more-evidence-that-plenty-o/ which comes from this study; https://www.nap.edu/read/18319/chapter/3 Most anti-gun fanatics talk about “universal” background checks as a panacea for mass shootings. They can’t tell you how the background checks will stop such crimes, but they push that nonsense anyway. A good can be found in the following study. Californiahas had”universal” background checks for about twenty years. A recent study found that it had very little to no effect on crime. https://health.ucdavis.edu/publish/news/newsroom/13362 For those who want to ban “assault weapons” or as they now call them “assault rifles,” a simple check of the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report shows that more people are killed by knives, blunt objects, and “personal weapons (hands, fists, feet) than all rifle types combined. https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/ucr/publications Then there’s the definition of the term “assault rifle” that even… Read more »

Universal (private party sale) background check laws are simply a means to create a data-base of all firearm owners, the functional equivalent of a gun registry. They have no effect on people determined to kill themselves or shoot someone else, or use of a firearm in a serious felony, like robbery or home invasion. It is no surprise that California’s law has had no effect on crime or suicide rates by firearms.

The purpose of every gun registry scheme is to empower government to find and seize firearms from its citizens. An unarmed crowd is easy to control with well-armed men who are sanctioned to shoot people who refuse to disperse.

ArmyATC

I agree. That’s the only way they could even be remotely effective. And it’s also the reason Democrats aren’t going to allow citizens to call into the system themselves.

I’m not philosophically opposed to “universal” background checks. But I do oppose the way Democrats want to impose it. There’s no reason why a citizen can’t call into the system themselves and run a background check on someone they’re selling a gun to. There’s no reason a citizen should have to pay a third party a fee to sell his or her private property. There’s no reason a background check can’t be accomplished online. Walmart can do it. Why can’t we? Oh, yeah. That would remove Big Daddy gubmint from the equation and put the power back into the hands of the people where it belongs.

What the Democrat version of “universal” background checks will do is allow the government to build a database of guns and gun owners. It will also drive up the cost of a background check – from the current $25 – $200+ to $100 – $350+ – that will push the poor and even many middle class citizens out of the ability to buy a gun and exercise their 2nd Amendment right.

Club Manager, USA ret.

Little Rock has had 35 murders so far this year, Pine Bluff 25. All with a hand gun, usually stolen. So no assault rifle. No background check. Reason there is no Dumbocrat outrage is these were primarily black on black events.

A Proud Infidel®™️

When asked why the crime rate in places like Chicongo, libtards babble that it’s the availability of guns in surrounding locales. So if that’s true, then why the lower crime rates in places where guns are far more available, towns like Kennessaw, GA?

rgr769

Let us not forget that medical care errors kill somewhere between 250K to 400K U.S. residents every year. The exact numbers are not known because mistakes by doctors and other healthcare professionals tend to get buried along with their victims.

I had an interesting conversation with my physical therapist yesterday. Somehow we ended up on the subject of guns when she said, “I just wish we could get those damned automatic weapons off the streets.” It was readily apparent that she had listend to and believed everything the anti-gun fanatics and the media had told her. She was surprised when I told her that for all intents and purposes automatic weapons and so-called “assault rifles” were already banned, that no citizens could own one made after May of 1986. I went on to explain the difference between automatic weapons and true assault rifles, and semi-auto firearms. I also explained “bump fire” to her- using the recoil impulse to “simulate” automatice fire – and how I could do the same thing with a stick, rubber band, or even my finger in a belt loop. She was astounded that the anti-gun folks and the media would feed her lies. By the end of the conversation, she had reversed her opinion on gun bans and confiscations. It was 40 minutes well spent.

Docduracoat

Why are you using logic and rational arguments against Gun control?
Gun control is not meant to stop murder, fight terrorism ,crime or any of the other so-called reasons given for these laws.
You will note that none of these laws are targeted against the areas where all the murders occur .
These are all against ordinary citizens .
The only reason the left wants to disarm the citizens is because they plan to oppress the people.

They know that the people would resist and would shoot back against their oppressors.
That is why our only strategy is no compromise any issue ever.
Bumpstocks, magazine capacity, background checks, red flag laws, etc…NO!
Because all these little infringements add up to complete civilian disarmament.

rgr769

The FBI’s 2018 crime statistics are out. Five times more people were killed with knives and other edged weapons that those killed with all types of rifles, including .22 rifles and single shot rifles. I imagine if we just compared AR style semi-auto rifles, the ratio would be more like ten to one knives to AR’s/AK variants.

[…] CDC’s own statistics have gun-related deaths at 15th in their list of death rates, showing heart disease at Number One position with 615,000 deaths per year, and gun-related deaths at Number Fifteen position with 15,000 per year, of which 11,000 were homicides. I covered that here: https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=91412 […]
