Weekend Open Thread-Fall

| September 20, 2019

September 23, 2019, will be the autumnal equinox.  After this day, the nights will get longer and the days will get shorter. This is considered the beginning of autumn. Meteorological fall began on September 1. If you go by the astronomical start (equinox), this will be the last weekend of summer. Either way, enjoy your weekend.

Get going on that five-peat, my man! I defer to your awesome firstness!

Ex-PH2

I have a chuck roast in the crock pot, 5th/77th. I hope the scent wafts your way.

5th/77th FA

Sniffed it earlier. Something told me to put on a pan of buttered milked cat heads this morning. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and know that it is the recipe from yesterday. #letseat

Sparks

Good job Brother! Congratulations…again.

Graybeard

You made it. Congrats on the new start on the attempt on the 5peat.

Commissioner Wretched

Have a great weekend y’all!

Haywire Angel

Happy weekend everyone! I miss seeing the fall color changes.

Ex-PH2

Wisconsin is starting to see fall colors. As of Sept. 20, Hurley, in Iron County in far northern Wisconsin, was reporting 65% color.

I hope they’re on time this year. I missed it last year.

5th…😎 Hey, ya gotta start somewhere

5th/77th FA

Heee’s baaaaaacccckkk! Another time on target FIRE MISSION for the King of Battle. We will “claw” our way thru the mud & the blood & the beer in our FIRSTNESS. Take that dickweeds and the open bar is on me.

A Proud Infidel®™

“Mud&the blood & the Beer…”
HEY, what about eh BOURBON?

Commissioner Wretched

As Maxwell Smart would say, “Missed it by that much!” But if I must miss out on being the coveted First, I am glad my man 5th/77th FA got it. So, instead, here’s this week’s trivia. A special column, this … my 150th. Enjoy. DID YOU KNOW…? Isn’t it nifty? We’re up to Column 150! By Commissioner Wretched It all began, as Ted Baxter once said, at a little weekly newspaper in Manchester, Georgia … with a hole in the paper that needed to be filled. In what seemed at the time to be a moment of desperation, I filled that hole with a few notes of trivia, calling the little spot, “Did you know…?” And apparently you all loved it. I began to get requests for more little trivial nuggets, which I was more than happy to supply. Finally, in October of 2016, I made the decision to keep doing this little exercise as my weekly column. Things took off from there, and now I get a lot of feedback from you – for which, I must state for the record, I am most appreciative. Today, that feedback has brought me to the 150th consecutive week I’ve written a trivia column … and I must tell you I could not be happier that you like what I’m doing. (If you’re one of the ones who doesn’t like it, well, I appreciate you too.) Thank you for making notes of my errors and miscues, and letting me know about them. That isn’t sarcasm; I really mean it. Your catching my errors makes me a better columnist, and I wouldn’t have made it this far without you. But before you start planning a party or anything, please note – this isn’t the end of the column. Oh, no … it’s only the beginning. I’m excited to see just how far I can carry this. Stick around, folks … it’s gonna be a fun ride. On to the 150th column of trivia right now! Did you know … … the last human to visit the Moon departed there in 1972? Astronaut Eugene… Read more »

I always wondered who came up with the stocks.

Nothing to do with the stock market, though, right? Or with stocking up in the pantry.

5th/77th FA

And nothing to do with stockings and garter belts either.

Man main man CW, Congrats on the 150th trivia column, have read and enjoyed them all. Keep ’em coming.

Manchester Georgia, a very quaint, cute little city tucked into the foot hills of the Flint/Chattahoochee River Valleys. Beautiful ride out GA 36 from Thomaston, cross the Double Bridges and hang a right @ Pleasant Hill onto the Old Chalybeate Springs Road; this time of year a drop dead gorgeous ride. Lots of Biker Gangs, Harley and Schwinn take that ride. My all time favorite felt hat, “The Planter” came from the Black Folks Clothing Store right up from the Western Auto/Otasco. Birthday present to myself in March of ’83. Pull out of town south on GA 41 towards Americus. Made that run on a regular basis for years.

Put your linkie thingie back up next time CW, it fell out when I changed from the laptop to the Chrome Book. Tanks!!

Outcast

Did you know, according to one source on Live PD, that the roadside sobriety test is illegal because over 90% of those who take it fail. Uhh yeah he got a free ride and small room for the night. Can’t understand why he only fell on his arse taking the test.

GDContractor

Days have been getting shorter and nights getting longer as of June 21, am I wrong?

Perry Gaskill

Indeed. The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. Days become shorter after it. The Autumnal Equinox is when days and nights are of equal length. Nights in the Northern Hemisphere continue to be longer than days until the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, when days start to get longer again.

Rinse and repeat to infinity and beyond…

SFC D

But but but climate change! Rising seas! Amazon fires! Save the world, it’s for the children! They have no infinity!

Perry Gaskill

Not to go full-throttle deplorable or anything, but I’ve been wondering lately if there might be a healthy market for Greta Thunberg dart boards on Ebay…

GDContractor

Repeal Standard Time! Repeal the 17th Amendment!

David

Top ten twice in a row… whoo hoo!

The Other Whitey

Mrs. Whitey is pregnant. This will be number four.

5th/77th FA

Congrats or condolences my man! Whichever you feel is most appropriate. You know, they figured out what causes that condition? Just remember, it wasn’t me, I didn’t do it, and I wasn’t even there. Look in the Coveted Book of Firsts and it will show I was abusing my F5 key on that day.

The Other Whitey

Yeah, I know what causes it. What can I say? My wife’s hot!

26Limabeans

If you want kids to grow tall you have to plant your seeds deep.

Graybeard

Mrs. GB and I only have 3 (plus one miscarriage) but we are up to 9 living grandkids so far (3 other lost to miscarriage), and love it.

rgr769

I figured out what caused it, so I quit after getting the complete set of two, anyway, via the snippy-snip. My wife and I are experts on birth control, we had one on the IUD and one on the condom. But congrats, my son has four and he manages fine. Plus, we need more responsible adult, married citizens having more children.

RGR 4-78

Congratulations for a healthy and happy 4 pete.

Graybeard

Most excellent, TOW! Congratulations to you and the Mrs, and prayers for a safe pregnancy, easy delivery, and that you survive the teenage years of all 4 of you heirs and offspring.

Thunderstixx

Congratulations to a great guy !!!
Here’s hoping that all works out well for all of those involved, especially the beautiful wife and baby # 4 !!!!
When you sit back and look at the grand scheme of things and realize that that baby is a machine made up of 3 trillion little machines we call cells that work to keep the entire machine up and living it’s just overwhelming !!!
I look at it at this time of my life and I am amazed at just how big and how small we really are.
Best to all of you !!!

Congrats, TOW!

I got on the TAH site like 12:55 and by 1:05, the Weekend Open never appeared. The only top story on the top was the Alaskan guy Glave. Can anyone help me out on why the open thread didn’t come on while I had the site on for ten minutes.

David

Did you refresh? If you just leave the site up, it won’t change till your computer requeries the ISP. In the event of your inaction, that could be a while.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Thanks for the heads up David, And no, I didn’t refresh. I just sat there looking at that Alaskan dirt bag Bob Glaves for ten minutes waiting to try and hit the 1st button.

Thunderstixx

You have to hit your F5 button, (Windows) and beat it like you beat something else back in Basic Training !!!
And I’ll stop right there !!!!!

Bill_M

I think I’m here today. Not sure sometimes.

Hack Stone

If anyone out there is looking for some free entertainment, a Marine Corps buddy hooked Hack up with a streaming site called Pluto TV. They have a lot of niche channels, one being solely dedicated to showing reruns of Mystery Science Theater 3000, and the next channel being RiffTrax, which is somewhat of a sequel to MST3K. Hack caught the ass end of RiffTrax doing the first Sharknado, and earlier this week they aired their take on Reefer Madness.

Hey beto, come get it! It’s right here in my lap!!!!!!

Graybeard

Top 30, I suspect (what with multiple post by some) – was working again today.

Tropical Storm/Depression Imelda is battering the AO pretty badly, but the GB Compound only got about 1″ rain total. Ironically, we are still under a burn ban while neighbors (Texas speaking) are under water.

Some bug going around the school where I sub, so I’ve been getting more work than normal. Love working with the kids (usually) but feel bad for the teachers who are out. But it also means my range time is limited to non-flooding days and weekends.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Thunderstixx

On another note, I have a report on the post I made regarding President Trump’s White House VA Hotline and the results of my experience with them. A little background on it, my Disabled Veteran Daughter, the bravest human being I know, had been fighting with the VA since 2007 when she was given an Honorable Medical Discharge with 40% rating. Needless to say with her fourth, last and failed surgery through the VA I demanded to get involved. I’ll keep it short by saying that following my call to the White House Hotline and speaking with a very kind lady there named Anita I put it in her hands and prayed for the best……. Soooooo…… Fast forward seven weeks, I swear, seven weeks to the day, we received notification and a check for back pay from the VA with a new rating that jumped from the original 40% to 80% with a corresponding increase in pay of more than double her original amount….. So, if you or someone you know is having issues with the VA Claims, please call them at (855)-948-2311. PLease be kind to them as I am certain that they deal with a lot of people that have nothing but really bad manners and are mainly just a big giant pain in the ass. Then, those clowns have the audacity to wonder why nobody wants to treat them right….. I called them up and thanked them profusely. Irregardless of your politics, we all deserve to be treated well by the people that are tasked to see to it that we don’t end up living in some Austin Texas homeless camp underneath some bridge along I-35….. The whole thing regarding myself, my daughters, all three of them and the way that my life has worked out for me has me just in awe of how the Higher Power I call God has given me so many blessings throughout my lifetime… I hope that all of you find that same sense of self worth and spiritual fulfillment that has been visited on my truly unworthy ass….. It’s really… Read more »

That is good news, Thunderstixx. Prayers to you and your family.

Graybeard

Glad to hear this, Thunderstixx.

I have to agree that, as the old Southern saying goes, “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”

I have found that dealing kindly with the folks on the other end of the phone has the best success rate – not that I’m beyond a bit of firm-but-kind action when those with whom I am speaking don’t want to do their jobs.

Start by being kind, and thank the other person profusely when they help.

(I have been known to bring dark chocolate as well.)

I came across this earlier this week – you may want to read this with no sharp objects or breakables within arms reach. It’s about the dark side of Swedish Socialism – and it will open your eyes to it:

https://www.aier.org/article/even-swedish-socialism-was-violent

11B-Mailclerk

So when the moonbabes here say the want to imitate “Scandinavian Democratic Socialism” they mean

“the usual authoritarian and dystopian mass-murdering Marxist cult in a ‘Swedish Chef’ mock accent”.

Got it.

11B-Mailclerk

I swear, this Auto corrupt is insane.

“Moonbats”.

“Moonbabes” belongs on the sub-thread about Brit sci-fi folks fighting invading aliens…

5th/77th FA

Prolly nothing prettier than a Scandinavian Babes Moon. I’d fight the Brits over it.

rgr769

It auto-corrected in my head anyway, as I read “moonbats” in your original post. We must have a psychic connection from our cowboy shooting experience.

11B-Mailclerk

Just… wow.

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2019/09/college_courses_illustrate_the_devolution_of_western_civilization.html

$43k a year for that “prestige” Berkeley degree.

For net-negative education.

rgr769

I’ll bet Berzerkeley grads have lower I.Q.’s after one of their degrees.

NHSparky

Last weekend of decent weather at Casa de Sparky annex.

I can’t wait for this project to end. My reward? Go 250 miles west and start another project.

At this rate I might make it home for Thanksgiving. Maybe.
