Lest We Forget….

| September 11, 2019

In 2011, the Atlantic published a group of photos from the events of Sept. 11, 2001.  They need no explanation. https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2011/09/911-the-day-of-the-attacks/100143/

National Geographic’s photo story was published in 2018.  https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2016/09/september-11-pictures-remembrance/

From Scientific American, the real reason the upper floors of the Twin Towers pancaked straight downward on top of those floors below. The lack of understanding about how much fuel is consumed in one minute by a passenger/cargo jet engine is rife in the conspiracy theorist world, but they are wrong about that, and about the most obvious part: the jet fuel spilled into the wrecked floors of both towers at the World Trade Center started fires that consumed anything combustible in those floors, and raised the interior temperature to a substantially higher temperature. The spilled fuel went everywhere. The conspiracy people also don’t understand why neither building tipped over sideways, but pancaked from the top down, because the struts in the girders on all the damaged floors snapped, and took both the floors above them and the floors below them down to street level.  https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fahrenheit-2777/

The conspiracy theorists forget that the first attempt to bring down the WTC was a 1993 truck bombing in the parking garage in the basement of one of those buildings. https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/stories/2008/february/tradebom_022608

That did a lot of damage, but did not bring the building down. And the conspiracy theorists also forget that truck bombings are a trademark attack method of destruction in the Middle East.

If any of the events that this destruction followed had been stopped long ago, before the 2001 hijackings ever happened, it’s possible that they might never have happened.

The start of it may have been in Munich, in 1972.  That was when Palestinian terrorists called Black September killed off Israeli athletes and coaches at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/israel/12028765/Horrific-new-details-emerge-about-the-1972-Munich-Olympics-massacre.html

There was the subsequent hijacking of a TWA passenger plane at a Beirut airport by Hezbollah terrorists, for the sole purpose of singling out Americans and killing them, and the Libyan bombing of Pan Am Flight 109 over Lockerbie, Scotland.  https://www.history.com/news/remembering-the-1988-lockerbie-bombing

It’s possible that this could all have been prevented.  A Navy diver was beaten severely and shot point blank, and his body dumped on the tarmac at the Beirut airport.  He and his five  team members were returning to Little Creek, VA from a repair job in Greece, in 1985.  https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2015/03/28/divers-to-receive-pow-medal-30-years-after-hijacking/

Stethen was beaten and shot and thrown out of the plane, while the other team members were held captive

And if OPEC had not decided in 1973 to place an embargo on exporting oil to the USA, because the USA supported Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, things might be a lot different today.  https://www.thebalance.com/opec-oil-embargo-causes-and-effects-of-the-crisis-3305806

As it stands now, Iran’s publicized intention to sell oil to Syria is, in the words of the British Foreign Minister Raab, aimed at disrupting regional security.

Netanyahu (Israel) has voiced the claim that Iran has a “secret” nuclear weapons site, one that was destroyed and another now under construction.  https://www.trtworld.com/middle-east/uk-accuses-iran-of-breaking-deal-with-oil-transfer-to-syria-gulf-tensions-28056

Where do we go from here? Are we going to be muddled in perpetual warfare in the Middle East? I have no answer, but a long slide into constant warfare with no end or purposed in sight is certainly not the answer. And we can not afford to take our own peace and security for granted.

Knowing what I know about construction and combustion, I’m amazed those buildings stayed up as long as they did that morning. The conspiratards really piss me off. At best, they’re ignorant. At worst, they’re liars.

I’ve been through some shit in my career. I’ve seen destruction on a massive scale. I was on the 2003 and 2007 sieges in San Diego, the latter of which temporarily displaced over a million people. In 2003 the smoke conditions were such that I lost track of an entire day, as it remained midnight-black the entire time. We found bodies burned in their cars trying to get away, something I’ll never forget as long as I live. We lost firefighters on those and other incidents, as well as cancer, suicide, and most recently training. As bad as those were, their death toll was in the dozens, with firefighter fatalities being fairly isolated events. 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and over 3,000 people they were trying to save, all gone in a few seconds, is far beyond even the worst of my experience.

The supposed “Religion of Peace” stirring up war and destruction for how many centuries now? Is it not the only “religion” whose mantra is to destroy any that will not convert to their belief? Those of us who have been alive for the last 60=70 + years and have studied world history are well aware of this. As a teenager I watched in ’67 as the BUFFS came roaring overhead at treetop level over the house, heading to their Fail Safe Points, wondering if that was the start of the destruction of the world by fire. If the Israeli had not stopped the Arabs when and where they did, if may have come to that. We were on heightened alert with the Sergeant System during the Olympics attacks, just to kind of keep everyone honest. Who knows what may have happened if the German Gubmit had not finally given the Israeli commandos the go ahead to do their thing. Got real sticky again during Yom Kipper in ’73 with the Lance System. Maybe NCA should have given us release authority then. That’s the one that actually lead to the oil embargo. Good linkies here Ex, and the reading thereof did bring back some very deeply buried memories, some of which we were told to NEVER discuss. A lot of this conflict that has been going on in the ME is “blamed” on the oil supply. IMO that is only part of it. ‘Specially now, and ‘specially for us. Even in ’73 we had enough oil to supply OUR needs, we just had to make sure that Japan and other non oil producing countries had enough. This whole ME warfare boils down to “Death to America” and “Kill the Infidel.” They have world religious domination as their plan and will never stop their crap until they either have it or they are destroyed as a people. Some of the younger ones here will live long enough to see them take over most of Europe. If we do not see some changes here, they will destroy our Republic from the inside. Too… Read more »

The 73 war was desperate times. In the late 70s, when I was just beginning my Army service, I listen to an intel Major, talk about rumours that Nixon opened our silo doors when Soviet satellites overflew the US and this caused the Russians to back down from sending troops to intervene (like several Soviet airborne divisions).

5th/77th FA

Some of that NEVER to discuss area for us Dustoff. No telling what might have come lancing thru the skies into those para transports.

Speaking of Buffs, didya know that F15’s and F35’s are “carpet bombing” now? I read it on the internet (final sentence @ link).

If I understand Biblical prophesies correctly (a huge qualifier), this activity will continue until they finally succeed in uniting/conquering the world and making a final drive to exterminate the Jews (and Christians) – at which point the event known as Armageddon will occur, and they will be defeated forever.

If my understanding is correct, it means that we will not be free from the need to defend ourselves and fight these primitives until Jesus comes again.

OWB

Indeed, some of us remember, with memories which are bitter sweet. It was nice to experience, for a brief time, all of us pulling together as one nation, undivided in our shock and grief. (At least those of our own who wished our destruction sat quietly in their confusion for a little while.)

The horrors of it all can never be forgotten. Those of us who were honored to be serving that day and during the days going forward will forever remember the duty we were privileged to fulfill.

Haywire Angel

I was active duty and walked into the breakroom just in time to see the second plane hit the tower. After that, we were immediately placed on 24/7 operations. I was unable to leave the base to see my kids until the next evening.

Fyrfighter

I was walking out the back door of my station, just coming off shift, when my wife called and told me about the first plane. I got upstairs in time to change the TV channel, and for the crews to see the second plane hit. We watched for a while, then I drove home, and walked in just in time to see the first tower fall.

The Other Whitey

I was a senior in high school. Saw it on TV in the morning, went to school and saw the towers fall on TV there, then went straight to my volunteer station after school let out early. Seven months later I was a new-hired Firefighter-I.

Can’t believe it’s been 18 years. We’re currently on a staffing pattern due to campaign fires up north, so I’m on day 8. We half-masted the flags and shrouded badges this morning. All these new guys calling me “Cap” were in preschool at the time. Can’t believe that shit, either.

Fyrfighter

That is crazy brother. Be safe!

RGR 4-78

I had just left my station after finishing my shift and had drove across town to Station 1, as I was walking in 1 of the on duty’s told me a plane had hit the WTC. I remember going in and watching as the 2nd jet flew into tower 2.

Looking back, I don’t remember why I had gone there or any of the rest of the day, it’s just not that important.

Commissar

Let’s also not forget that:

On the afternoon of 9/11/2001 Trump bragged in an interview that the Trump Tower on 40 Wall Street was the tallest building in New York since the towers fell.

Trump publicly pledged to donate $10,000 for the Twin Tower fund, took public credit for the donation multiple times but never actually made the donation.

The Trump organization applied for and received $150,000 dollars from the victims fund for “housing people” after the attack. But never actually housed anyone.

He claimed he personally helped clear the rubble. He didn’t. Workers saw him come down and do a self serving televised interview but he did not help in any way at the site and left as soon as the cameras were off.

He also essentially “stole valor” as president during a televised speech to 9/11 first responders by repeating the claim he was down there with them but “doesn’t consider himself a hero”.

Trump claimed he paid 150 of his workers to help clean up efforts. Not a single Trump paid worker was ever seen at the site and none have ever come forward to back his baseless claim. Former New York Fire Deputy chief Richard Alles who was supervising on the ground 20 minutes after the event and everyday until he cleanup was done never saw any Trump workers and said none would have been needed due to all the trained response teams from around the country, municipal workers, and union sent workers he had on site.

So let’s not forget that the man sitting in the Oval Office lied constantly about 9/11 to aggrandize himself, promote his brand, promote his properties, profit of the victims fund, and promote his bid for president.

And some of you will be pissed that this post is not in the “spirit” of 9/11 remembrance. And you are right, it is not. There is no reason anyone should ever have to mention that the President of the United States constantly and continues to lie about 9/11 to aggrandize himself and profit off the event.

That should never happen.

SFC (R) Blizz

Prove it, I’ll call your bluff. What are your sources?

Let’s not forget that Clinton could have killed Bin Laden, but chose not to. He was actually the President.

Bill R.

I just listened to that interview. Despite what you Trump haters think, he was not bragging. It was a statement of fact to describe the impact of the terrorist act. There was absolutely no emotion in his voice to suggest he was bragging about it. I also do not believe that he said he was there to help clean up the rubble. He did show up there, but IIRC it was to feed the workers.

Mason

How is that bragging? Sounds like a statement of fact. A rambling one at that. It’s just how Trump talks. His mouth can’t keep up with his brain, or his mouth spews shit before he can think about it. Either way it’s just nonsense to think that he was bragging about anything.

Now please, go away. You have to come on the 9/11 remembrance thread and shit on Trump? Come on. You’re a classless piece of shit for this.

Hondo

Yep. Bill “Cigarman” Clintoon indeed made that claim, in public – on 10 September 2001. No, I’m not kidding.

https://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-bill-clinton-osama-bin-laden-20140801-story.html

Commissar

I’m not sure why you think this is in the same league as what Trump did. And I don’t think Clinton was a good person or fit to be president.

I don’t think I have ever defended Bill it Hillary and I am always confused as to why any of you all think “what about” Bill or Hillary explains or excuses the crap others do.

Even if I was a Clinton supporter how would the Clintons being shitheads make it ok for Trump to be a shithead?

Hondo

I’m not sure why you think this is in the same league as what Trump did.

Well, Commissar, I’ll spell it out for you using small words.

Clinton had the chance to take out bin Laden. He did not.

Bin Laden had declared war on the USA two years before that.

No bin Laden, no 9-11 attack.

The timing of Clintoon’s statement simply proves that either God or Satan (I’m not sure which) has a sense of humor which tends towards the ironic. And Clintoon was also trying to make himself look better by making that statement – e.g., “I coulda killed him, but there would have been collateral damage so I didn’t. See how nice and ‘morally upright’ I am?”

Let me reiterate that last point. Clintoon had the chance to remove a serious threat to US security – a threat that had in fact declared war on the US 2 years earlier. He opted not do do so because he claimed he felt that the collateral damage involved was not worth it. That is, he put foreign interests and lives ahead of his own nation’s security. As a result, three years later 3,000 Americans died.

This from a guy who came by the nickname “Cigarman” for good reason. And who also consorted with a known sex offender on private trips to the Dominican Republic, sans Secret Service detail, on a jet nicknamed the “Lolita Express”. And he wants us to consider him “moraly upright” for failing to do his #1 sworn job as POTUS – e.g., for failing to protect US national security. Yeah, right.

No, it’s not in the same league as Trump’s puffery. It’s at least two or three orders of magnitude worse.

Does that make it clear enough for you, you f**king moron?

Just Lurkin

Good old Lars-Sandy Berger’s pants o’mystery is not a scandal worth mentioning, but Trump maybe embellishing what he did on 9/11 is apparently something that should shock everyone. Never change Lars.

Commissar

Another bullshit “whataboutism”.

It would be far more relevant if Sandy was president right now.

It would be more relevant If he was not held accountable by having his clearance revoked, being criminally charged, sentenced, fined, and had losing his law license.

It would also be more relevant if he were not dead.

Just Lurkin

Sure Lars, the point is that in 2016 we had a choice between a pumped up braggart and the woman who is matriarch of the crime family which sent one of their closest associates into he national archives to destroy classified documents directly related to 9/11. For which he got to plead to a misdemeanor, pay a fine and basically go about his business. A loudmouth is an annoyance Lars, subversion of Justice by those in power is an actual scandal and choosing between the two is no problem for most of us.

Hondo

Another bullshit “whataboutism”.

So was your bringing up Trump on this thread in the first place.

Are you simply a natural hypocrite, or do you consciously try to be one? Or are you so freaking thick-headed that you don’t even realize you’re being hypocritical?

The Stranger

Embrace the power of “and”.

Mason

The totally unbiased Politifact. Will you be citing Snopes as a reference next?

Commissar

As for he $150,000 grant. I retract that one.

He did apply for and take a $150,000 grants from the small business victim’s fund.

And he did publicly admit his properties suffered no damage.

And his did publicly claim he got the grant for housing people when he didn’t house anyone.

However, 40 Wall Street was just under a mile from the towers and had less than 500 employees and thus was eligible for the small business victims fund grant for any losses suffered. Since it is impossible to verify after the fact that he suffered no business losses then I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

He suffers no property damage losses and did not house people as he claimed. But he may have suffered losses in other ways.

It seems weird he cashed in on the small business victims fund but he was technically eligible. They just paid his claim and did not verify if he had losses at the time and there is no way to check now.

I don’t care what Trump did or didn’t do on 9/11. Nor do I give a fuck what Barack Obama did or didn’t do that day.

I care about the actions of Rick Rescorla, the Cornwall-born naturalized-American security supervisor who was already a hero for his actions as a platoon leader in the 7th Air Cavalry in the Ia Drang Valley long before he gave his life so others may live. I care about the actions of Fr. Mychal Judge, the much loved FDNY chaplain who responded from his friary after hearing the first impact, assisted with evacuating the building occupants, and died while administering the Last Rites to a mortally-injured firefighter. I care about the actions of Firefighter Joseph J. Angelini Sr. of FDNY Rescue 1, New York City’s oldest active firefighter, who died with son, Firefighter Joseph J. Angelini Jr. of Ladder 4. Commissar ain’t worth drip of piss from any of these men, or the 400+ others.

I have the same issue with hearing a PASS. I’m glad the new model Scotts changed the PASS tone. Just watching the video and knowing what that sound means is an extra kick in the balls.

As for Taylor, fuck him. He’s basically the new guy who thinks he should be in charge because he got a basic cert. Sorry, TOW. Reported your comment on accident.

Perry Gaskill

Lars, this one seems fairly clueless even by the usual standards of commissariat myopia.

It’s not a startling revelation that President Trump has now and then been a shameless self-promoter. Personally, I’ve also wished sometimes that someone would break his thumbs when he’s been using Twitter. Still, what he might have said 18 years ago on 9/11 is probably only of serious interest to those emotionally caught up in finding anything, however inconsequential, to prove orange man bad.

What’s also true is that all politicians are self-promoters. It’s something that goes with the territory when running for office. They also tend to deal in hyperbole, and generalities phrased as absolutes. One of the more classic knee-slappers, for example, is when Barack Obama said global warming is “settled science.”

I tend to not be as offended by your comments as some others among the TAH crew, but still find it annoying when you join those who push ideas based primarily on hysteria instead of facts. It’s been my experience that those ruled by emotion tend to often be least likely to make correct decisions.

If you really want to get irate about something, I’d also suggest that you might focus your attention on the recent release of a jihadist speech by Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who shows no remorse for 9/11 and calls for renewed attacks on the U.S. and others:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/september-11-attacks-anniversary-al-qaeda-leader-ayman-al-zawahri-calls-for-attacks-on-us-today-2019-09-11/

Martinjmpr

Really, though, how many “followers” does al Zawahiri have these days anyway?

In terms of how much effect he has on the rest of the world. al Zawahiri is pretty much in the “Old Man Yells at Cloud” level of influence.

Perry Gaskill

How many “followers” does al Zawahiri have? That’s an interesting question. Current estimates are that Al Qaeda still has somewhat more than 40,000 actives. So it’s possible to ask one question and have pop up at least three others:

Setting aside efforts to try to establish an ISIS-style caliphate, is 40,000 loyal jihadists enough to carry out an act similar in magnitude to what happened on 9/11?

Ayman al-Zawahiri currently has a $25 million reward on his head. Why is it that no one has claimed it? And how is it possible for him to release a recent 33-minute video for airing on mainstream news media?

Martinjmpr

Setting aside efforts to try to establish an ISIS-style caliphate, is 40,000 loyal jihadists enough to carry out an act similar in magnitude to what happened on 9/11?

I’ll answer your second point first and the answer is “no.” Because if they had that capability they would have used it by now. They don’t.

As a side note, the 9/11 attacks weren’t some “brilliant” or “courageous” attacks. In street fighting terms, the 9/11 attacks were a “sucker punch”, that is, punching your opponent when he doesn’t even know there’s a fight on.

The thing about sucker punches is – they only work once. And if you sucker punch somebody bigger, stronger and tougher than you and don’t put them down with the first blow, you’re in for a world of hurt. Which is why the current crop of jihadis spend most of their time either running and hiding or killing people who can’t fight back.

And as for that 40,000 number, I’m curious about your source but either way, color me skeptical.

40,000 people who might raise their fist and say “right on!” when some jihadi blows up some infidels? Sure, I’ll believe that.

But 40,000 jihadis who are ready, willing and able to pick up a gun or strap on a bomb and attack a Western target? That’s a lot tougher to believe. Again, if they have that capability, why aren’t they using it? They can’t even prop up their failed ISIS state in shitholes like Syria. Take on a non-Muslim Western country? Not a chance.

Perry Gaskill

One of the better estimates for Al Qaeda’s current numbers is from a Council on Foreign Relations story last March. It also provides an overview of current status and an argument that Al Qaeda may be coming back from a period of doldrums:

https://www.cfr.org/expert-brief/al-qaedas-resurrection

To put some of this in perspective, my own view is that the old-man-shouting-at-clouds meme is analogous to getting upset about a threat level approaching zero. Inconsequential to the point of irrelevance. Water off a duck.

The treat of a resurgence of Al Qaeda isn’t non-zero but it’s probably a less tangible and immediate threat than, say, Iran triggering some serious incident in the Strait of Hormuz, or the Taliban being able to re-take control of Afghanistan and re-establishing a sanctuary for radical Islam. Al Qaeda shouldn’t be ignored, but should be kept on the radar.

Bin Laden and his supporters knew that the US wouldn’t take 9/11 lying down. What they hoped for was either (a) another ineffectual and pointless “retaliation” like the one that Clinton unleashed following the Africa embassy attacks in 1998. A weak, symbolic response that harmed none of the bad actors and only killed innocents without achieving anything, OR (b) an over-the-top annihilation attack against Islamic population centers that would kill thousands or millions of innocents, would polarize the Muslim world against the infidels, ignite a spontaneous uprising of Muslims and ultimately lead to the creation of the new caliphate. Well, neither of those things happened. Bin Laden didn’t expect that the US would carefully plan our Afghanistan strategy by allying ourselves with the Northen Alliance (they thought the Northern Alliance would be doomed by the murder of their leader Massood on 9/9/01.) Certainly Bin Laden and most of his followers thought that the US, still haunted by the specter of Vietnam, would never deploy troops in large numbers to Afghanistan, and in that he was sorely mistaken. He missed being taken out by hours during the Tora Bora campaign and spent the next 9 years of his life running and hiding until the SEALs finally caught up with him in Abottabad. If our mission to “save” Afghanistan and turn it into a modern nation is a failure (and I would say it was an impossible mission to achieve in any case) then Bin Laden and Al Qaeda’s mission to ignite a global Islamic jihad was an even more spectacular one. Even the “Arab Spring” revolutions of 2011 are just a dim memory and the Islamic world is more fractured than ever. Sure, ISIS is still a threat and there are still random terror attacks – most of them happening in Muslim countries where the primary victims are also Muslims – but Bin Laden’s dream of a “world Jihad” that would… Read more »

On this somber day, I’m sure dozens of fake SEALs, Green Berets, and Rangers attended 9/11 remembrance celebrations in communities from sea to shining sea. These wannabees will provide TAH readers with entertaining tales of false bravado and medallic fuckery for years to come once exposed.

9/11 Never Forget, Never Forgive

A Proud Infidel®™

I was running late delivering a load of insulation in Northern Indiana that day. I turned the radio in the cab on after I finished unloading and thought “WTF?”, that it was some “War of the Worlds” kind of shenanigan until I turned the TV in the sleeper on and saw it with utter disbelief. To me it was spooky driving through major cities for the next few weeks without seeing planes in the air either.

9/11 was a day that changed my life. Led me into the service and into police work. I’d be a completely different person now if it hadn’t happened. For better or worse.

While we read through Commissar’s drivel up above, I’d like to point to the protests against communism in Hong Kong right now. Today, the protestors are taking a day off in honor of our country’s loss. Fucking amazing that people in Hong Kong are more patriotic than our resident douche bag.

“more patriotic than our resident douche bag” is a bar so low even a certain disbarred lawyer at -6 AGLs can get over it.

I was walking into my state computer programmer job when my friend and co-worker, a former CPO, told me about the first plane.

We commenced consuming bandwidth watching the rest.

The desire to defend our country led #2 Son to join the U.S. Army and become Airborne certified. Although a bad jump and injuries on his 2nd deployment now have him listed at 80% disabled and will keep him from reupping when his current enlistment is up.

I’ve no doubt he’d do it all again. I could not be prouder of him.

It was while he was in Iraq that I began looking around the webz and found TAH, and the community we have here.

That day of Infamy, we all pretty much came together.

Almost all of us.

Now, some folks are so hate-consumed that they, on this day, this anniversary of Infamy, see it merely an opportunity to try to inflict harm on fellow Americans. They have forgotten.

They fail. America persists. America prevails. The Land of the Free remains.

The Stranger

God Bless The United States of America.

18 years ago today, I was at work when the terrorist attacks occurred. We saw the news footage and knew we would be deployed soon. (I was almost 35 years old, a TSgt and was coming up on 14 years of service.)

We spent the next few weeks spinning up our aircrew on desert survival, combat survival and E&E procedures, getting our mobility bins inspected. 30 days after 9-11 we were enroute to our deployed location, with me being the deployed Aircrew Life Support NCOIC. Upon arrival we spent the next 3 days getting all our survival equipment configured and survival radios programmed. We were now part of Task Force Sword under Joint Special Operations Task Force-South. Then on the evening of 19 Oct 2001, 4 of our MC-130E aircraft launched for “Hit Night” the targets being Objective Rhino and Gecko.

Lars, congratulations on turning an honorarium into a political screed. Our dead countrymen deserve better than that. My disappointment in you as an American and as a Soldier was huge, but today you managed to turn it into complete disgust. Shame on you! I understand how hollow these parental words may fall on you, but they would devastate me. Again. A heartfelt- shame-on-you!

our route was supposed to deliver foreign currency to the Bank of America in tower 1 but was given to another route because DTC (depository trust company) 175 water street needed an early delivery so we were also supposed to make the Bank of America pick up at the end of the day. As we were going over the Manhattan Bridge on the way to DTC, I was sitting on the left side of the truck and did a double take when I saw what looked like a horizontal line along the face of the building with smoke issuing out of the slit. Jose the Messengers (man in charge) phone rang with his Mom telling him that an airplane went into the building. We got off the bridge and while going through Chatham Square in China Town, I jumped on Joses lap just as a giant glittering fire ball pushed out from tower 2. We made it to 175 Water street and DTC decided to take the shipment. While inside, tower 1 went down. We were parked along the FDR Drive and Alex the driver got on the southbound ramp and we went north bound because the southbound traffic was stopped. All you could see going over the water to Brooklyn was what looked like printer paper and other debris. The Fulton fish market and the whole area was covered with this gray ash. We made it to the Midtown tunnel where we had to wait awhile to go through. We eventually made it down to Kent Avenue at the Brooklyn Shipyard where our office was. I called the LBFD Fire Dispatcher to see if any of the rigs were being called for M/A (mutual aid) and was told no so I stayed until quitting time and while driving on the Long Island Expressway, you could see a line of Nassau and Suffolk Fire trucks heading into Manhattan. I found out my rig 233 went down there for Lighting support and for a number of nights, they were called before I got home. 3 weeks ago, we lost 233’s Ex… Read more »

Getting dusty in here, Jeff. Thanks for sharing. Adding them (and you) to my prayers tonight.

Fyrfighter

Thanks for posting Jeff. I had the privilege of meeting Captain Hatton back in 1994, a great man, and a great loss. Doesn’t surprise me at all that he was where he was, on that fateful day.

The Other Whitey

Thanks, Jeff. My Grandma was born and raised in St Albans, Queens, and my great-great-uncle Otto, Father Adolf “Otto” Erhard (he hated the name Adolf long before anybody ever heard of Hitler, and always went by Otto) was the Priest at St Nicholas parish in Brooklyn, but I’ve never been to NYC myself. A now-ex girlfriend from there (Navy brat) was kind enough to leave one of my CDF patches at the WTC site while visiting her family there in ‘02, by that’s the closest I ever got. Maybe someday I’ll make it out there. I do have some roots, after all.

My condolences for your brothers and coworkers.

Mason,Fyrfighter and TOW;
Thank you for your comments, and I forgot to add that the LBFD (Long Beach Fire Dept, NY) Lost LBFD/FDNY members John Elgis and Bill Quick And also LBFD/NYPD member Richey Wentz from 9/11 related illness’s. We remember Bill as a classic and when he was alive, just mentioning his name to any FDNY brass brought steam coming out of their ears from some of the stuff he did. Capt. Hatton was on LBFD’S ladder 2 when I was on board and during Sunday drills when he wasn’t working for FDNY, his Knowledge was something else to talk about. once we were coming back from JFK after picking up El AL freight and were passing the Long Island City FD shops and R 1 was sitting there with Terry standing behind the rig so I stopped the truck and opened the door and Terry says, Jeff, the guys want to try out the hurst tool on the trucks rear doors. I guess they wanted to see the diamonds and pearls. When he was shopping for an engagement ring for Mayor Rudy’s press secreatary on 47 street where one of our offices are, he walked down the block looking at the Brink’s trucks and when I saw him, I beeped the horn and talked to him through the gun port. One can google FDNY Rescue 1, Always Riding and there is a nice video on Terry and his crew.

Fyrfighter

Cool stories Jeff, those are the kind of memories to keep, and how those guys would want to be remembered.

For those interested, Nineline did a cool short documentary.. On you tube, it’s “unshaken courage” ( i tried to link, but got a stupid long URL

The Other Whitey

I watched it with my crew last night. Very good, and more than slightly tear-jerking.

Fyrfighter

No doubt. Watched it with my crew as well, along with other 9/11 documentaries… afterwards, energy / motivation during training / PT was a bit higher than usual.. don’t think that was coincidence.

Roh-Dog

NEVER FORGET.

(All other things I’d like to say will be withheld due to the nature of This Day and the memories of those that paid that day and all the subsequent days)

mr. sharkman

Why do any of you read let alone read and respond do the commissar poster.

Utter & complete waste of time.

The posts are always the same in the end. The same BS always reveals itself.

Think of all the time the little closeted dictator spent forming all the posts in his little head.

How glorious & hilarious would it be if he posted here and nobody replied to his comment.

Let’s have a contest; everyone guess how many posts he’d make if nobody responded? My guess is 3.

All he is doing with your replies is scoring repressed commie fag points on some wannabe communist operative forum, by using your # of replies & total words typed, etc. replying to him to brag to his would-be lover boys about how effective he is at stirring up sh!t WITH ACTUAL US COMBAT VETERANS (!!!).

Every word, sentence, paragraph written in reply to him gives him status with some unknown closeted group of fellow (stalin jr.’s fellow) travelers.

Ignore it for 3 years is what I say. It don’t cost nuthin’ and will aggravate the wanna-be che fellating whore boy to know end!

🙂
