Attorney Kevin Creed, Pleads guilty to stealing $1.4 million from Veteran charity.
I constantly get flack for holding my position that civilians should stop giving money to veteran charities. Ya, Ya, Ya, I know there are a few of the over 30,000 registered veteran charities that do some good work. Toys for Tots is probably at the top of that list.
The tsunami of fraud, waste, and abuse that is going on wipes the pages clean of any do-gooder benefit in my book. Until the trash that runs the majority of those 30,000 charities is clean up and held accountable we should stop supporting them.
A Litchfield attorney pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing $1.4 million from the charity he founded to support families of military veterans.
Kevin Creed, 67, waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty to wire fraud for the scheme in federal court in New Haven, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Creed founded the Friends of Fisher House Connecticut in 2010 as a chapter of the national Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit that builds “comfort homes” on the grounds of military and Veteran Affairs medical centers to provide no-cost accommodations for veterans and their families receiving care there.
He actively solicited donations for nonprofit from businesses and individuals, including the Bristol half-marathon and a 10-kilometer race, under the guise that the money would support the West Haven Fisher House, prosecutors said.
But Creed also took about $1.4 million of the money raised for the group and put it toward personal expenses and expenses for his Bristol-based law firm, prosecutors said.
Fisher House sued Creed late last year for the theft and filed to hold him in contempt this summer, unable the group has been unable to recover any of the money even though Creed’s law firm continued to pay him, according to court records. That case is still pending and the next status conference is not scheduled until Oct. 25.
The criminal case is still under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New Haven and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael McGarry, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Creed faces a maximum prison term of 20 years and is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Janet Hall on Nov. 20. He was released on a $100,000 bond pending his sentencing.
I figure his law firm will step up to the plate and demand they be able to repay the $1.4 million. That has to be the case because lawyers are driven to do the right thing, it’s in their DNA. (if you need a /sarc tag added to that…you should probably stay off of this interwebnet thingy.)

Those numbers do not include all of the “expenses” poor David has to be reimbursed for. It’s just my humble opinion but Creed and Coker come from the same mold. Fisher House is nothing special when it comes to all this parasitic poor veteran behavior. Insofar as I can tell, its epidemic.
No veteran should have to look at that picture too intently in order to figure out there are a bunch of parasites in it. Using us for political gain is repugnant, particularly if you have embellished your military career to gain public support.

I stopped donating to them after Typhoon Omar after seeing the line of dependas getting massive checks for absolutely no fucking reason and the rest of the command getting zip point shit and cleaning up the island without so much as a clean set of clothes for in some cases several weeks.

I’m wid you too Dave on all these “Veterans Charities.” I help out with the Toys for Tots program and the American Legion Operation Comfort Warrior. A group of us do a luncheon program at the local VA Hospital every year where we feed the troops and pass out goodie bags with various and sundry items. Not a single penny collected for that goes into anyone’s pocket and we have a very multi talented band that donates their time for a music show.
I hope that this SOB lawer Kevin Creed rots in a Super Max somewhere while Bubba, Thor, Jolio, and Mr. “Tiny” have their way with him.
I don’t know if he’ll walk but as an attorney, I bet all he gets is a slap on the wrist.
People like this are the reason I would rather donate money to a street bum, or TAH, or an animal shelter.
I’m with you Ex. I think its Dave Hardin who reminds us there are more than 40,000 charities supporting various veteran causes. As a military retiree, I’m throwing nickels around like they’re manhole covers. I get immense satisfaction from donating to my very own retirement fund and paying for my Spousal Unit’s Survivor Benefit Plan premium for when her favorite veteran fades away.
We do enjoy contributing to a local non-profit that provides musical instrument instruction for children and we previously established a multi-year scholarship fund at my wife’s alma mater. As parents of an teacup Maltese we are easy prey for animal shelters and ASPCA solicitations.
DAV, is one of the best, USO also ranks right up there with them.
I tell my riders that giving to the DAV will ensure that the money goes to those that need it.

Wrong. DAV (and all the other VSOs) pay their National presidents (commanders or whatever they prefer to call themselves) over $300,000 a year plus medical/dental and vehicles/jets. This is the biggest scam of all and has been going on for decades.
Used to be, they served for free. It was an honor. Then one day the Red Cross started paying their honcho big $. United Way followed suit. It just went downhill from there. Vets became big money. The kicker was when WWP jumped in. That one backfired on their prez when they asked for $450 K a year.
Did you folks know every Vet who signs up to have DAV/VFW/MOPH/etc. rep him (for free) gets a “stipend”from VA for doing so. It’s about $250 right now. Their win/loss record is about 15%. None of them have any legal training whatsoever. It’s like the deaf leading the blind. I studied to pass the VA Agent’s exam for three years and became accredited in 2016. It took me 30 years to beat VA and win all my claims for AO. I do it exclusively now for my Vietnam buds now. My success rate? 100%. It’s a recipe-just like baking cookies. No charity is ever above reproach. Investigate every one by using Guidestar. Fisher House is the best at 96% of the money put back into the charity.
My wife stayed at the Fisher House in Seattle for over a month when I spent a year in the Seattle VAMC. They generally only allow you two weeks but they figured I was going to punch out and let her stay.

My wife got a call from some organization asking if she would support disabled veterans. She said, “No thank you. I have my own.” I agree, of those 30,000 organizations, a huge majority do nothing.
When I accumulate enough items to justify the trip, I take them to the local veterans hospital. That is my favorite charity.
I have no motivation to give to any of them. Too many fraudsters are in almost all of these charities sucking up the donation dollars.
I think I’ll organize my own motorcycle riding charity club to raise “awareness” and affiliate with some DC based national org. Then I can soak up some donations to finance trips and my motorcycle rides. As we have seen, as long as we don’t generate more than $50K a year no one will look at my “charity.” After all, charity begins at home. Anyone have a good recipe for chili?
Will there be vests?
Yes, you have to have vests, and everyone will ride a Harley, except me. I’ll promote myself to five star general. Then I think I’ll get a support animal. To be different, I’ll get a support miniature horse, since some airline will now let passengers bring them on the plane. “Stewardess, there is a horse apple in my seat.”

If you steal from Veterans you should be tried by a Military Tribunal. Force to pay all of it back with interest and sit in a military prison

People forget that charities for the most part are run like a business. they have payrolls and overhead.
People running that shit can pay themselves what the want and put anything on expenses.
This crap is a consequence of saying “oh, it’s just a property crime.”
Initiating force or fraud is a major offence. Treat it as such.
