Gun Owners Outraged as New Zealand Government Refuses to Pay Full Price for Banned Firearms

Remember when New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that NZ now plans to enact extreme gun laws in the wake of the terrorist attack by banning semiautomatic firearms and forcing citizens to turn in the banned weapons?

The Arms (Military Style Semi-automatic Firearms) Order 2019 essentially bans all semi-automatic firearms that are capable of using a detachable magazine that can hold more than five rounds of ammunition.

Ardern immediately began pushing for even more extreme gun control measures following the deadly attack, declaring that the nation would change its gun laws.

Ardern appeared to take her comments even further, saying at a press conference:

In the meantime, we are asking all current holders of military-style semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles to visit www.police.govt.nz. There they will find details of the weapons included in this ban. In the next 48 hours, a form will be available on this site that we are asking these gun owners to complete, identifying what banned guns they hold. The police will then arrange for these weapons to be handed over, and eventually destroyed. Details of the weapons handed back by owners that are covered by the ban will also be taken to ensure that fair and reasonable compensation is paid once the buyback is in place. If owners are unable to complete the online form, they are able to contact the police on the phone to arrange the handover of these now-banned guns…

Anyone one else catch a whiff of bovine scatology upon reading this? Seems your sniffer is up to par because…

Gun owners in New Zealand are outraged that the government is doing a forced buyback of “military style” semiautomatic rifles but refusing to pay full price for the firearms.

The New Zealand Herald quoted Council of Licensed Firearms Owners spokesperson Nicole McKee, who said, “Some of the offered prices for higher-end firearms are well out of kilter. We’re talking thousands of dollars.”

McKee indicated that the government is paying such low prices that some gun owners are simply refusing to hand their firearms over.

She added, “It may get down to a point where we have to look at court action on behalf of our members, and that is something we will be looking at under advice from our lawyers.”

Now gun owners say the government is not willing to pay the true value of the banned firearms. A June 20, New Zealand police announcement makes clear the most that will be paid for any firearm is 95 percent of what the gun was worth before the ban took effect.

The 95 percent buyback reimbursement only applies to guns in like-new condition. If the firearm is categorized as “used,” the highest reimbursement possible is 70 percent of the firearm’s value.

Talk about bait and switch. Ardern goes on to state:

I can assure people that there will be time for the returns to be made, and that they will not be criminalized overnight. After a reasonable period for returns, those who continue to possess these guns will be in contravention of the law. Currently, the penalties for this range from fines of up to $4,000 and or three years in prison. The draft legislation will look to increase these penalties.

Turn it in and take a bath in the exchange, or keep it and after a dubious “reasonable period” one is now an instant criminal. Sounds like what’s happening in a lot of Blue States here in the US. And like the US, I’ll wager there are a lot of Kiwis buying PVC pipe and desiccant packs.

The tragedy of Hurricane Harvey, or was it Irma? Micheal? Hugo? Should have never been on the lake that day.

“If you like your doctor, you can keep him.”
“The check is in the mail.”
“Of course I’ll still respect you.”
“We’re from the government, we’re here to help.”
“You SSAN is not for ID, it is for SS purposes only.”

Need I drone on? Didn’t think so.

But do you have phone and a pen?

I have a PRC-77 and a #2 pencil, will that do?

Sapper3307

Go look at the NZ firearm dealers pages they have some nice prices on silencers and some neat used stuff we don’t get in the U,S.

SFC D

So, what we’re seeing here is confiscation, not an actual buy-back? This is my shocked face.

I’m sure that Eric Swallowswell is taking notes on this bait and switch tactic. Not that he’ll ever get a chance to try to implement it.

Why am I not surprised by anything done down under?

GREAT BLINKY BLOODY POOP STAIN, just think about it, NOW that there is a LAW passed for everyone to turn their icky-poo ugly, scary black guns in, New Zealand will suddenly turn into a crime-free paradise because the possession of an ugly assault gun-thingie is now a CRIME and look at how the Gun Laws in Chicago have turned that place into something like the Munchkin scene from “The Wizard of Oz” no wait, never mind…

*NOTICE* NO Munchkins were harmed in the making of this comment.

I don’t care how much money the gruberment offers.

Our freedoms are worth more than any amount of money.

This is why NZ will descend into communism. Their people are complaining about the amount of money they are getting for the guns, instead of complaining for the unlawful confiscation of their firearms.

Tyrants will come into the scene very soon. I have seen this movie before.

Ret_25X

well, we all saw that coming when they banned “nukes” from visiting their fair nation…because feelings or something…

NZ is screwed. It doesn’t have enough internal resources to survive more of that “benevolent socialism”

I say we leave them to the Chinese. I am beginning to believe that we should have left Western Europe to the Soviets years ago with the way it’s going (and this is because my sympathy for the outside world has run dry except for a few nations like Poland along with most of Eastern Europe as they can pull their own weight (I am on the fence about the UK, I find Brits to be some of the most smug people though this could just be a minority on the internet), Japan, Italy (they seem to be the most nationalist country in Western Europe though it has been rising again in Germany and seems to be building up again in France as well), and Israel). Let’s hope we don’t make that mistake again.

They appear to have forgotten some rather unpleasant business about 80 years ago, when a rather nasty neighbor sought to devour insufficiently armed countries.

Now, a much larger appetite is looking at them.

Because it’s the gun that gets up, loads itself and goes out to commit mass murder….right.

“[people] in Blue States…buying PVC pipe and desiccant packs.”
I don’t know *what you are talking about*.
And don’t buy prefilled packs, a gallon jug of loose silica gel is cheaper, about 7.5-8 lbs for $30-35. Get tyvek envelopes from the PO for free, rubber glue, some assembly.
The more you know.
