Smart Weapons – An Overview

FN 5.7

I was so intrigued by Joe “Hands” Biden’s ideas about smart guns that I was prompted to research what real smart weapons may be like.

Since the US Army was intrigued by the idea of a harness for a heavy weapon operator to wear, to ease the stress on bones, backs and muscles and still get the job done, that is now under development. That came up a couple of years ago. Hollywood props makers come up with some gonzo stuff sometimes, everything from costumes for bone-thin actors to wear for a giant drooling ant’s part in a spooky sci-fi movie, to weapons that can fire depleted uranium rounds at those bugs  in a bug hunt.

I did a little searching and found this video overview of what smart weapons of the movies are supposed to do, how they operate and what they fire, and nicely done.  It’s a nice video from Alien Theory, outlining the properties of the smart guns used in the movie “Aliens”.

He does say ‘uncased ammo’ and then shows cased ammo, and – well, nobody’s perfect. It’s a good job of describing how those “smart” weapons work and what a variety is available for use against bugs in a bug hunt. The harnesses the actors wear generated interest by the military to develop something similar for real use.

He has other videos explaining the other smart weapons used in the “Aliens” series of movies and the games derived from it.

The idea of smart weapons is not really something new, but it starts in Hollywood the Industry and occasionally, as with the harnesses for heavy field weapons, may turn into something real.

What I’d like to see is better armor that can truly protect troops in the field from explosions and shrapnel. We’re getting too many people injured that way, and the worst are the burn cases.

Some day….

Enjoy the video.

IMHO Joe “Hairplugs” Biden is a 24K IDIOT when it comes to firearms, remember his shotgun comment?

J.R. Johnson

Joe is a big Skeet/trap shooter. That is why he favors shotguns…he doesn’t want to infringe on his sport…just others!

I wholeheartedly agree M’Lady, IMHO Joe “Hairplugs” Biden would likely look squarely down the double barrels of said shotgun while pulling both triggers, NEVER underestimate the stupidity of liberal pols!

Yeah, Hollywierd has a real problem with visualizing what caseless ammunition would look like. Wonder how they would reload that tiny drum magazine with its contiguous non-disintegrating plastic belt?
I know the Army has been researching caseless ammunition for quite a while as it would save a lot of weight and issues with leaving stuff on the battlefield for our enemies to reuse. I remember in Afghanistan back in 2003 there was actually an order to “police your brass” so the Taliban could not recover it to reload.

If these Smartguns had the ability to set the fuze, why did they not just ensure that setting instead of taking their “batteries” when Ripley pointed out they were next to a Nuclear Reactor? Just like Air Marshalls use frangible ammo so not to penetrate the hull and cause everyone to be sucked out like a soda straw (I heard that is a myth, but it makes sense like what happens when a tank is perforated by a SABOT round).

I have CF cards for my D70 that hold about 3k high-res pictures and run faster than the camera buffer on “motor drive”.

Look for fast cards, then go big as your budget will tolerate. Amazing what newer cards can do for older hardware.

Dad did pro work with a D70. I bought him four 64GB high-speed cards when they came out. Night and day difference versus his original ones.

Caseless ammo for individual firearms will be infeasible for quite some time. There are numerous reasons why cased ammunition has been in use for over 150 years, despite all the innovation.

Here’s an earlier pic of Joe Biden showing how he would commit suicide. (grin)

He’s pointing to the dumbest person in the room, doubly to remove any doubt.

I know there’s a joke in there about a vacuum…

A certain Martian may be made very angry if Earthlings get a smarter weapon than his. Tread carefully.

We had caseless ammo “back yonder.” All kinds of problems with it. Had to load most of them thru the muzzle, paper got wet, powder got wet, slow rate of fire (3 aimed shots a minute), hand rollable only, ect ect.

When creepy old Joe thinks “Smart weapons”, it’s probably closer to Maxwell Smart.

Joe Biden is proof we do need to ban Dum Dums.

All of the “smart gun” technology is bunk. Every one proposed and studied had multiple malfunctions. A gun that can read your DNA reliably won’t be available, if ever, until many many years after Plugs and most of us here are food for worms. Moreover the gun prototypes that were supposed to be inoperable unless you were wearing a special electronic ring turned out to be inoperable half the time when the shooter was wearing the ring. All these electronic gee gaws are subject to failure. Anyone want to bet their life on one? I guess ol’ Slow Joe thinks we are all going to turn in the 130 million old fashioned fool proof mechanical guns in favor of these imaginary electronic DNA triggered ones. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

David

You are free to buy any gun you want as long as it has all the $20,000 ‘smart’ hardware on it. Back door gun ban, make guns unaffordable and unreliable.

I agree that is one of the motivations for this nonsense from the gun grabbers.
