The Navy removed recruits from training after finding disqualifying information in their dependent medical records, according to their parents. Here, a recruit division commander offers motivation at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. (GSEC Seth Schaeffer/Navy)

This is ridiculous.

The Air Force and Army began merging prior dependent medical records with service member records in 2004. The Navy initially told Military Times that it doesn’t merge records. After Military Times asked about comments from parents whose children were forced out of recruit training, officials then clarified that its medical staffers still could have access to the dependent records in the electronic system. – Article

Those records were for dependents counseling services when the families/kids were having a rough time. Now they are condemned as being unfit for duty because at age 2 and 4 and 10, they got counseling for something????

What does this mean? If you get counseling for something bad that happened to you when you were a toddler, you’re unfit for military service? If you are 10 and your parents are divorcing, which can be very hard on kids, and you go to counseling with Mom or Dad, you’re doomed?

I’ll tell what it means. Don’t do nuthin’ and don’t EVER tell nobody nuthin’.  Just suck it up, Buttercup.  Find a ceramics class for kids where you can slap and pound the clay like a madman, or find a pile of wood to chop, and suck it up, Buttercup. Get a gallon can of paint and a big brush and go paint the fence out front, and do all the cursing you like where no one can hear you, because if you actually talk to someone about what has upset you, you’re a horrible, untrustworthy person from that day forward.

This is possibly The Stupidest Thing I’ve come across yet – you are permanently damned, even if your parents did the right thing when you had no say in the matter.

I’m glad this abomination was brought to light. What’s next? You can’t get a job in the Real World because you threw a tantrum that your folks recorded on the stupid iPhone, thinking it was funny, and put it on the internet? What the Hell is wrong with people now?

Same kinda thing here in the Enlightened State of Connecticut, the AWB says if you go into a mental health facility for issues other than alcohol or drugs they seize your firearms and permit.
But if you go in because you’re mainlining heroin and smoking crack, you’re gtg.
Remember when the Institutions that Be told us that ‘there’s no stigma in seeking help’ and ‘mental health is important’…
Yeah, they lying. Par for the course.

Sounds like a convenient way to discharge someone you suspect of thoughtcrime.

I suspect if you did a little deeper you’ll find these kids are of stock that was let go early by the prior admission and the signatures are of disciples.
Just a theory.

And many people outside the US wonder why we tend to be very weary of the government. It’s not out of fear, it’s out of mistrust. Got into an argument with a Canadian on Quora about gun ownership who cannot seem to understand why the US is fundamentally different from other countries particularly when it comes to government and gun ownership. Well, I should have told him that he should ask the Jews who lived in Nazi Germany, Native Americans, anybody who lived in the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin, China under Mao, or those who survived the Killing Fields of Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, and the blacks who lived in the south during the Jim Crow Era. Heck, just look at what’s currently going on in Venezuela. Yeah, that distrust is not without it’s merits.

AMEN, preach it!!!

Rome would have been a good one too. Especially if you were a Christian in which you were suppressed, quite brutally as well. Japan during World War II with their secret police force the Kenpeitai. And the “Democratic Republic” of Germany (yeah right) and their Ministry of State Security (German: Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, MfS) aka the State Security Service (German: Staatssicherheitsdienst) or better known in English as the Stasi during the Cold War. Of course we can’t forget the KGB or the Gestapo.

Silly me. I always thought medical records were supposed to be confidential.

11B-Mailclerk

And of course medical records will be strictly confidential when the Government runs health care.

Which is why the Left wants to run health care. So they can confidentially control, or even un-person, any bad people who oppose Leftists.

“For your own good, and the good of Society” of course.

It -is- that blatant.

Ret_25X

the records are confidential…they are protected from the patient.

Notice whose records they are.

They are not YOUR records. They are the provider’s records.

Now, when we think about the HIPAA restrictions, we realize that the regulations are not there to protect us; they exist to protect the providers and prevent us from know what is actually true about our health.

As long as your health and dental records belong to the provider and not the patient, you are the commodity, not the customer.

Glad I did my stupider stuff long before the innerwebz and recording phones.

The expunging of my arrest on trumped up charges (found innocent of) and job ordered counseling hasn’t happened. At that is from ’06.

I think that my permanent record also show me guilty of shooting spit balls at Duanne in the 5th grade.

Here in Texas the libturds want to fine men $100 for mastubating because, Trump, guns, abortion… Oh hell I don’t know… They want to because of something they don’t have control of…
Anyway, the Texas legislature has just began debate on putting monitors in the barracks at Ft Hood to bring in millions, er, billions of dollars in the BEQ Barracks between Ft Hood, Lackland and a few other military reservations !!!

Same thing is happening in some corners of the Marine Corps. Eligible youngsters getting DQ’d by MEPS for stupid shit. How recruiters allow that is beyond me.

SgtBob

Recruiters and MEPS people don’t agree on a lot of stuff, but MEPS is run by people who make their own decisions. You can get a kid fully qualified, no criminal record, high school grad, good ASVAB scores, and MEPS kicks him because he is too muscled. Happened.

SFC D

MEPS, BCT and AIT passed me a kid with Asperger’s. Nobody’s been able to explain that one to me yet.

NHSparky

Newsflash…this shit was going on when I was a recruiter 20+ years ago.

Ain’t nothing new.

WOW, I,m glad the Navy didn’t find out about me and my friends making phony phone calls to pizza and drug stores to deliver items or about us throwing water balloons out my friends second story house window, wrapping Ex Lax in Hershey bar wrappers in Junior High school, wrapping dog poop in newspaper and lighting it up on someones door stoop, using a pea shooter, turning in a false alarm from a pole mounted alarm box around 1951, giving wrist burns, cutting study hall, punching one of my friends giving him a bloody nose, rolling around on the ground losing twice in fights, checking out girlie magazines around 1957, bringing the mens only girlie magazine home and Mom throwing it away, buying sneezing and itching powder to use on my friends, skitching on the rear bumpers of cars on snow covered streets, throwing snowballs at passing cars but then again, this was done during the 1950’S which was a totally different time.

AW1Ed

Heh. We used to practice small unit tactics with bb guns. My pals all had Red Riders, and I had a Crossman Power Master. The rules were I couldn’t pump the thing more than twice to keep even with the less well armed guys, a rule I always strictly observed.

Or maybe not. *grin*

These days we all would be in jail or worse, for these shenanigans.

Back in the day when vending machines/change machines accepted half dollar pieces, I discovered (by ‘accident’) that certain one cent coins from the UK would be accepted as half dollars. Man, I went back to the coin shop and bought hundreds, at less than 5 cents each. By the time all the change machines, mostly in laundromats, discovered what was happening, I was rolling in dough. I was, oh, 8-10 at the time.

he old & New Navy ( Most of this applies to all the services in one way or the other) Then – If you smoked, you had an ashtray on your desk. Now – If you smoke, you get sent outside and treated like a leper, if you’re lucky. Then – Mail took weeks to come to the ship. Now – Every time you get near land, there’s a mob topside to see if their cell phones work. Then – If you left the ship it was in Blues or Whites, even in home port. Now – The only time you wear Blues or Whites is for ceremonies. Then – You wore bell bottoms everywhere on the ship. Now – bell bottoms are gone and 14 year-old girls wear them everywhere. Then – You wore a Dixie cup all day, with every uniform. Now – It’s not required and you have a choice of different hats. Then – If you said “damn,” people knew you were annoyed and avoided you. Now – If you say “damn” you’d better be talking about a hydro electric plant. Then -The Ships Office yeoman had a typewriter on his desk for doing daily reports. Now – Everyone has a computer with Internet access and they wonder why no work is getting done. Then – We painted pictures of pretty girls on airplanes to remind us of home. Now – We put the real thing in the cockpit. Then – Your girlfriend was at home, praying you would return alive. Now – She is on the same ship, praying your condom worked. Then – If you got drunk off duty, your buddies would take you back to the ship so you could sleep it off. Now – If you get drunk off duty, they slap you in rehab and ruin your career. Then – Canteens were made out of steel and you could heat coffee or hot Chocolate in them. Now – Canteens are made of plastic, you can’t heat them because they’ll melt, and anything inside always tastes like plastic. Then – Our top… Read more »

Unfortunately this is very accurate, for all services.

” Everyone has a computer with Internet access and they wonder why no work is getting done.”

Remember when computers would make paperwork unnecessary? Yeah, me too.

AN-TSC-85A Tactical Satellite terminals came with an ashtray, accountable on the hand receipt. I may or may not still have one. I admit nothing. Call my lawer.

Mom always warned me that everything I did would go into my ‘permanent’ record. Big brother truly is watching.

My daughter had mitral valve prolapse at about the age of 4. Docs told us not to worry, it was common and was more or less the disease of the month. I told her to never list it when filling out any paperwork. She has been completely asymptomatic and her several echocardiograms have been normal for nearly 40 years.

So, a recruit fails to disclose past medical treatment that is potentially disqualifying for military service, the military finds out, and they get shown the door. Sounds like exactly what should happen to me.

Whether or not a particular condition should be disqualifying or not is a different issue entirely.

I also can’t help but wonder how many got caught after filling out paperwork for their security clearance. Unless things have changed greatly, for at least some levels of clearance you sign documents giving the USG access to your medical records.

NHSparky

Anything dealing with PRP, that’s a given.

Debbie

Sounds like going to a Chaplin or religious would be the best work around for families.

I like my doctor, I trust him and I’ve been going to him since the mid 80’s. So when he cautioned me to never let the insurance people know anything about me that wasn’t absolutely required – I listened. We get a few bucks off our health insurance if we get a yearly physical and present the results or go to an insurance approved clinic. He said they just want to build a profile of you in order to screw you over later. The company insurance we have now sucks – thanks O bum a care, so a few bucks is no big deal. And have you noticed all the advertisements on tv to tell your doctor all about your mental health? Just the first step to red flags and there go your gun rights.
