Weekend Open Thread

| February 1, 2019

So, what does a couple do if they want to get married, but the government won’t let them?

Well, in one case . . . the couple and the groom’s prospective mother-in-law simply went elsewhere. But the circumstances were a bit unusual.

The place they left was East Berlin. And they did so by driving past the East German border guards and under the barrier gate at Checkpoint Charlie.

. . .

In May 1963, Austrian Heinz Meixner was 20. And he was gainfully employed.

He worked in West Berlin, and had for about 15 months. As a foreigner, he was allowed to cross the border into East Berlin. He did so periodically.

On one of his visits to East Berlin, he met a lady – Margarete Thurau. In September 1962, the couple had become engaged.

The East German authorities weren’t exactly pleased. They refused the couple permission to marry unless Meixner moved to the East.

Meixner wasn’t willing to do that. So he decided to spirit his fiancée and her mother into West Berlin.

One one of his trips to East Berlin, Meixner rode a motorbike. He faked engine trouble while crossing the checkpoint.

While the guard was checking his passport, Meixner managed to measure the precise height of the bottom of the metal barrier gate used to block vehicular access until permission to depart East Germany was granted. The barrier gate’s bottom was 37 1/2 inches above the road.

Meixner then checked car rental agencies to find a small sports car that – without its windshield – would be low enough to pass under the barrier gate. He found one: an Austin-Healy Sprite. With its windshield removed it would be only 35 1/2 inches high.

Meixner arranged to rent the car. After removing the windshield, he also let out some air from the tires to provide additional margin.

Meixner then drove the car into East Berlin. He met with his fiancée and future mother-in-law.

When it was time to leave, is fiancée wedged into the small space behind the front seats. His mother in law curled up in the vehicle’s tiny trunk. Meixner surrounded her with 30 bricks for protection in case the border Guards shot at them during their escape attempt.

A bit after midnight on Sunday, 5 May 1963, Meixner approached Checkpoint Charlie from the East German side. The first East German border guard checked his passport and directed him to the customs shack – where from past crossings Meixner knew the vehicle would be inspected in detail.

Instead, Meixner gunned the car’s engine. Accelerating, he approached the final barrier gate and ducked.

His car passed under the barrier. The East German guards were so surprised that they did not fire.

After passing under the barrier, Meixner hit the brakes and skidded to a stop. The three had made it to West Berlin.

Like the East German border guards, the American border guards at Checkpoint Charlie were also shocked at Meixner’s audacity. But after recovering the American guards welcomed them.

Heinz Meixner and Margarete Thurau were now free to marry. And now they – and Maragarete’s mother – also possessed something else precious enough to be worth risking life itself: freedom.

The East Germans later added vertical bars under the gate to prevent a repeat performance of Meixner’s escape.

Congratulations, 5th/77th FA, and may you reign supreme, lording over us lowlife peons. We exist to serve you.

Wilted Willy

Congrats good sir! May you enjoy your week on the coveted WOT Throne! I humbly sit in waiting for your first order of business for the rest of us Dickweeds and Deplorables!
I bow to your greatness!!!

Commissioner Wretched

I cede the crown of First in the WOT to you! Reign well and be beloved by your people … or not, as you choose.

3/10/MED/b

WW,
Welcome back!!

Wilted Willy

Thanks, I have been sick as a dog for the last couple of weeks, started out with a bad cold, then I had two abscessed teeth that had to be surgically removed! Just got all the stitches taken out yesterday! Feeling much better now. Thank you for your concern! May all my brethren enjoy the weekend!!!

3/10/MED/b

Sorry for the pain, glad you are feeling better.

And your brother is still a POS.

2/17 Air Cav

Cripes. Looks like you took the crown easily this week. I see a Nixonian gap between first and second postings, less 16 minutes.

5th/77th FA

Non, nix, hells to the naw, I be damned!

The struggle was reelz. I was working on my second post to change 1st to FIRST. Beat out 3/10/MED/b by mere minutes. These young’uns wuz shit hot on my 6. The bandwidth and megabytes was shrinking/fading fast. I knew I had only nano seconds before the hordes closed in.

It was almost imperative that I get the FIRST FIRST on the FIRST Friday of the month that fell on the FIRST. Some one had to step up FIRST and show that wimpy GDContractor the proper way to Lord over the non FIRST wannabees. These loosers just need to line up and discuss who shall be FIRST to light my stogie.

Besides that, being a strong FIRST negates the TAH HQs to have to call an executive meeting FIRST thing in the afternoon to rule on the legitimacy of the 1st FIRST.

It is good that Warriors such as us FIRST meet on the battlefield of FIRSTS. It is also good to see Wilted Willy back and doing well, and to hear that 3/10/MED/b is doing more better. Also, too, the beloved Compatriot AnotherPat (RTR) continuing to improve and posting like mad.

The gracious surrendering of the coveted Crown of FIRST by CW, and the humble congratulations of HMC Ret. All that is left is the begrudging congrats of SFC D and all of my minions shall meet at my corner and we will raise a toast.

All Hail The King of Battle, winner of Wars!

SFC D

Congratulations, dickweed. Enjoy your time on the throne, and you may have noticed there’s no toilet paper in there. Long live the King!

2/17 Air Cav

Nicely done. I especially liked the borrow from that outlaw, Josie Wales.

5th/77th FA

FIRST of all; the glory of winning (earned never given) the Coveted FIRST on the TAH Weekend Open Thread NEVER fades. It is said FIRST and then let it be written in The Book of FIRST for all to see and for all time. The only thing that should be fleeting is the happy ass dickweeds fleetingly setting up another round for my Brothers and Sisters.

There is no postage due and there is no return to sender. Now be fleet about setting your rifle shooting, mail toting happy ass down and join us in a cold libation.

5th/77th FA

FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!take that dickweeds!!!!!

The King of Battle has called in a TOT on your happy asses! Bam Bam Bam FIRST again on the only FIRST that counts!

Let it be written, let it be said.

Shout it from the Mountain tops!

That is the high mark for me.
Congrats, 5th/77 FA.

HMC Ret

How are you doing, 3/10/MED/b? You weren’t doing well a few days ago. Hope all is well.

3/10/MED/b

Better today. Slow process, but I gotta start somewhere. Right now, sitting on somewhere. Thanks for asking, Sir.

After first, there is only loser, losier, and losiest. Since you are top ten, Mick, you rated the loser category. Hey, at least you weren’t losier or losiest. BTW: This not in the WOT rules. It’s just something I made up.

3/10/MED/b

Something was “made up”?

Seen a lot of that shit this week…

26Limabeans

FIRST!

The 1st Signal Brigade was activated on 1 April 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam. The brigade’s mission in Vietnam was to originate, install, operate, and maintain a complex communication system that fused tactical and strategic communications in Southeast Asia under a single, unified command. The formation of the brigade brought together three signal groups that were already in South Vietnam.

SFC D

My first duty station was 229th Signal Company, 1st Signal Bde. 1988. But it was in Korea. The mission however, has not changed.

NHSparky

Nope. And BTW, Chief says he has a “5-minute job” for you to do before you head over to Beeman’s for Aloha Friday.

5th/77th FA

Great story Hondo. That is the FIRST time I have heard that story. I guess Meixner was the FIRST to use an Austin-Healy Sprite to get thru. I hope that his FIRST Wife was his only wife and his FIRST Mother-in-Law enjoyed her FIRST Day of true Freedom. I would further speculate that the American Check Point Charley troops were the FIRST to welcome them to freedom, the FIRST to congratulate them, and probably the FIRST to be invited to their FIRST Wedding.

I’ll be at my corner bar stool, having my FIRST Libation of the afternoon.

Have one of the minions bring my a cold frosty stout, a stogie and my Zippo.

Commissioner Wretched

Since I couldn’t be first this week, I’ll soothe myself with this week’s trivia column. This week, a shout-out to TAH is included for the headline question and answer! Hope you all enjoy. DID YOU KNOW…? Is the U.S. government still paying benefits from the Civil War? By Commissioner Wretched Where in the world is the time going? It seems like just yesterday we were all shouting to each other, “Happy New Year!” And now we’re about to embark into the second month of the year. I hope your January of 2019 has been a good one. Mine certainly has. After all, I’m still in (reasonably) good health, and I still have gainful employment. I still have you, as well, the faithful readers (or gluttons for punishment, as you may also see yourselves) of my weekly dose of trivial information. Now that we’re a month into the new year, let me ask you … did you really expect things to be very different? I didn’t think you did, and neither did I, to be truthful. But isn’t that the best part of the time going by? Some things get better, of course, and some get worse, but on the whole, the overall picture remains pretty much the same. This can also be said for trivia, you know. We may add to it; we may learn previously unknown things about what we thought we knew; but by and large, trivia just stays in place to entertain us and keep us company. I’m glad you read these words, and if you want to send some words of your own, I can be reached at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com, from which you’ll get a speedy reply. Let’s dive into the new set of trivia here; I’m anxious to learn the answer to the headline question! Did you know … … Donald Duck has a middle name? It’s Fauntleroy. (Somehow, that seems appropriate, don’t you think?) … people in Egypt had an unusual source for fuel for their trains? CW let me be the FIRST post to thank you for another fine segment of trivia for the week. I’d also like to be the FIRST to thank you for the posting on Mose Triplett’s daughter. A number of fellows, on both sides, when captured, became Galvanized Yankees, or Galvanized Confederates. For some, taking the oath of allegience beat a POW Camp. Interestingly enough, a number of girls back then would marry up with those old men because they did get a pension and that was some of the only cash money they would see. In other cases the father would “marry off’ the daughter to have one less mouth to feed, or even a dowry.

Keep up the good work!

26Limabeans

“Mose Triplett (1846-1938) was a veteran of service in the Civil War”

Triplett is a trigger word for Signal types that had to use one instead of the Simpson 260 which was far superior. Same guy?

Don’t think so ‘Beans. Ray Triplett started the meter co in Bluffton Ohio 1904. I’ve used ’bout every body’s meter known to mankind at one point in time or another. Mother Bell go to meter for decades was the 310. Your old school techs still keep one handy (hid from mgmt) in lieu of the Fluke Digital. Triplett was a little more rugged and forgiving in some cases v the Simpson.

Top whatever. Happy Friday Dickweeds.
Flurries they said.
Snow showers they said.
Maybe an inch they said.
Gee, if it’s only 12 degrees, do you think it will stick?
It was only 4 the other day.
It’s been like that for a few days.
Oh maybe it started a little earlier than we thought, just in time for rush hour, they said.
Gee, I don’t know, if they KNEW, we’re going to get *some* kind of frozen precipitation that, Uh MAYBE they could have treated overnight?
Gee, no just let everyone take off on their merry way on a Friday morning when it’s going to be snowing for the next 6-8 hours.
Oh and NOW you’re giving Liberal Leave to the government while I’m still trying to drive in to work AND now you decide to start closing the schoolks early??

WHAT THE FLYING MONKEY FUCK IS *WRONG* WITH YOU RETARDED ASS NUGGETS??

I should get a job as a meteorologist in the MD/DC/VA area. I can generally make up shit and fuck up my job at *LEAST* 50% of the time (or more) and get paid a shitton of money for it.

OK Maybe not a shit ton (51 to 113K a year) but still.

It was mildly amusing until the last sentence..

“At press time, a Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team was deployed to the mid-Atlantic to investigate reports of a sinking goat.”

For some reason that caught me off guard and the visual image made me *guffaw* in front of my office mates.

On This Date In History, 1FEB:

1943 – Japanese forces on Guadalcanal Island, defeated by Marines, start to withdraw after the Japanese emperor finally gives them permission. On July 6, 1942, the Japanese landed on Guadalcanal Island, part of the Solomon Islands chain, and began constructing an airfield. In response, the U.S. launched Operation Watchtower, in which American troops landed on five islands within the Solomon chain, including Guadalcanal. The landings on Florida, Tulagi, Gavutu, and Tananbogo met with much initial opposition from the Japanese defenders, despite the fact that the landings took the Japanese by surprise because bad weather had grounded their scouting aircraft. “I have never heard or read of this kind of fighting,” wrote one American major general on the scene. “These people refuse to surrender.” The Americans who landed on Guadalcanal had an easier time of it, at least initially. More than 11,000 Marines landed, but 24 hours passed before the Japanese manning the garrison knew what had happened. The U.S. forces quickly met their main objective of taking the airfield, and the outnumbered Japanese troops temporarily retreated. Japanese reinforcements were landed, though, and fierce hand-to-hand jungle fighting ensued. The Americans were at a particular disadvantage because they were assaulted from both sea and air, but when the U.S. Navy supplied reinforcement troops, the Americans gained the advantage. By February 1943, the Japanese retreated on secret orders of their emperor. In fact, the Japanese retreat was so stealthy that the Americans did not even know it had taken place until they stumbled upon abandoned positions, empty boats, and discarded supplies. In total, the Japanese lost more than 25,000 men compared with a loss of 1,600 by the Americans. Each side lost 24 warships.

Combat Historian

The Japanese were experts in the art of stealthy evacuations. They did so again in Kiska in the Aleutians in July 1943 and from New Georgia and Kolombangara in the Solomons a couple of months later. But, as Churchill said of Dunkirk, evacuations don’t win wars…

rgr1480

My late father-in-law was evacuated from both islands. He was an artillery officer … Imperial Japanese Army. Other tours in the Pacific Islands, Manchuria, and a small island that is part of the Sakhalin archepelago (he said the B29 bombings was pretty severe).

Late but upright.

Since a lot of people were tossing things up in the air to see what happened during the Polar Vortex, I decided to do an experiment or two my ownself.

First, tossed a gallon of 15% Ethanol up in the air.
Down came 1 quart of 110% shine, 2 pints of Distillers Grain and 3 bushels of corn.

Lastly, I tossed up a SJW…………….and all I got back was a frozen piece of Scheiße!

Oh well, will have wait for the next Polar Vortex to see what happens when I toss up a socialist, a Democrat and a Liberal to see what I get back.

Until then fellow Dickweeds & Weedettes, have a great, happy & safe weekend!

Oh and BTW…This is the FIRST Stupid Bowl that has a total of 5 UGA players on the teams rosters. It is also the FIRST to have 21 players from SEC Teams. I don’t normally follow the national felon league, but I have been invited to a social function that is built around this upcoming game. I may need some advice before the weekend is over.

Hope the news media picks up on Ralph Northam’s embellishment on his military service during the Gulf War.

In case any of you missed it, Jonn included Northam’s FOIA when he wrote this:

Had to go back and re-read to recollect the specifics of this tool. Never saw how many children he treated for gunshot wounds during D/S at 97th Gen.

“pompous ass with holier than thou attitude.” Thanks again Jonn….You would be proud of the work your successors are doing. RIP Brother!

One last rant about Governor Ralph Northam and I will get off my Soapbox…

Do you think the Virginia LT Governor, Justin Fairfax, will comment about those yearbook pictures?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Fairfax

5th/77th FA

Well if he don’t comment he is a dumbass. Not commenting would say that someone is protecting the POS baby murdering current guvenator, and he, Fairfax condones it. Prime chance for Fairfax to become the new guvenator without hardly trying. Politicians, and especially demon rat politicians are notorious for protecting one another. They are also notorious for stabbing one another in the back. My hope is that they will continue to feed on one another and self destruct. The margins of victory in the last election were very small. Who knows how many were “stuffed” into the box.

Virginia voters have the same problem that has happened in many of the states. Enough of the truly left wing, liberal, socialistic types have moved into the metro areas, they have enough votes to override the decent hardworking conservative types that have thrown up their hands in frustration.

Where is Al & Jesse?

GDContractor

Is Fairfax the one that got airbrushed out of his campaign flyers?

Yup…

What does theNavy/Marine term “Brig” mean and what’s the origin of the term?

ANSWER: One of the smaller but more versatile warships of the sailing era was the two masted ‘brigantine’ (French word for ‘Bandit’), or ‘brig’ as it was abbreviated by the Royal Navy.
Small, fast, and well-armed for its size, it served as a scout for the bigger ships, patrol vessel, convoy escort, and errand boy for the fleet.
In the last case, it would often be used to run mail, fresh provisions, spare parts, and personnel back and forth to England.
Admiral Nelson found them very handy to transport prisoners of war.
So many were his victories and so great was his success that for a period of time nearly every brig arriving in England had prisoners aboard, and so many were modified as sea going jails for this express purpose.
With every ship having at least one or two troublesome crewmen as well as an occasional prisoner of war, it was customary to put him in the ships own “brig” for a spell.

I’ve been asked by one of our Nautically Challenged friends to crack the code, as it were, on the Navy’s ranking mysteries. I’ll work on this over he weekend and try to explain the difference between rate and rating, and post a link for easy reference of current rates.

26Limabeans

Army rank is simple and intuitive.

Navy has too many fancy words that confuse the hierarchy. Just look at the screen names here. I can’t tell who to salute or not.

Devtun

Yeah, and “mister” for junior officers 0-4, and below.

HMC Ret

That would be good, Ed. I see Rate, Rank and Rating often used interchangeably, even by those who should know the difference. They are not interchangeable. I thank you in advance for this.

While you’re at it, convince the Navy to look into the Rear Admiral thingee.

“CBS Rejects Pro-Flag, Anti-Kaepernick, Just-Stand Superbowl Ad”:

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/cbs-rejects-pro-flag-anti-kaepernick-just-stand-super-bowl-ad

“A Veteran-owned apparel company’s pro-flag Super Bowl TV ad that punches back at Nike’s promotion of Colin Kaepernick and his national anthem protests has been rejected by CBS.”

“According to the firm, Nine Line Apparel, CBS was apparently not satisfied the firm could pay for the 45-second ad, despite having annual revenues of $25 million. A spokesman for Nine Line charged that CBS didn’t like the ad’s content.”

“The ad features soldiers, first responders, and images of military graves decorated with American flags and gives credit to them for protecting the rights of those like Kaepernick to protest…..”

Good stuff. The company has just gotten more attention than a 45-second commercial would have garnered. Looks like a helluvan outfit that does much good work. They have two entities, one that sells cool stuff and the foundation that helps severely wounded and other Veterans.

2/17 Air Cav:

Thank You for posting the additional links for Nine Line Apperel.

Thumbs up on your comment. So true.

5th/77th FA

Grrrrr and just…damn on the Communist Broadcast Suckers. I throw a BIG BULLSHIT FLAG. Having arranged for and helped produce commercials I know that as a rule, you pay for commercials BEFORE they are run. Disclaimer; I have never been involved in a Stupid Bowl Commercial doings, but I have done National. We had to ensure payment was made, again, BEFORE it was run. Grrrrr.

Thanks for the linkie on Nine Line. I did not know of them. Depending on where on the outskirts of Savannah they are, that’s only about 130 miles down the road from me. I will not only buy from them, I’ll make me a day trip down to see them. Have yet to buy anything on line from anyone, but that is about to change.

Nine Line shirts are the unofficial uniform of my shop, along with Grunt Style. Great ad, and hey, CBS? Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

Michael Sauschuck is a Marine veteran.
Portland Maine Police Chief.
Nominated to be the new Public Safety Commisioner.
Rabid anti second amendment opportunist.
Must have crossed his fingers when he took the Oath.

https://bangordailynews.com/2019/02/01/politics/hearing-on-mills-public-safety-pick-erupts-into-debate-on-gun-rights/

Portland is not the state capital.
Not even close. But it is chock full of moonbats.
I hope he keeps pushing the “Marine veteran” angle. Might cause someone to dig a little deeper.

26Limabeans

A more in depth look at the problem from those in the know:

His hero is former Police Chief Mike Chitwood who now infests southern Florida.
Chitwood has shown up in TAH post a few times and I have pointed to him each time.

These weasels move around a lot and I’m betting they leave tracks they are unaware of until somebody comes across them.

2/17 Air Cav

He strikes me as a professional weasel whose lips are permanently affixed to the public teat. He was police chief for a year, then became an assistant city manager, and then moved into the public safety commissioner job. Bootlicker.

2/17 Air Cav

We’ll compromise on that and say he alternates between the two.

5th/77th FA

The infestation is deep and getting more widespread. I repeat my opinion from another thread/post. What these socialistic gunn grabbing bastards can’t get done on a national level, they are getting done on a state/local level.

26Limabeans

Here is another lefty Marine that just stole the election.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jared_Golden

Maine has been a breeding ground for these people since the 70’s “back to the land movement”.

5th/77th FA

So his was the FIRST election stolen using ranked balloting. Hmmmm. He was the FIRST to vote against Granny Piglosi, so there is that. Where is Joshua Chamberlin when y’all need him.

26Limabeans

“Joshua Chamberlin”

His statue still stands at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. For now…

Today is 3 February and it is Super Bowl Sunday. Like some of you, I will not be watching the game. There is hubbub over the half-time show and the kneeler issue will not go away. So, it’s a little late for this suggestion, but I’ll make it anyway. How about profiling those of our military who Fell in various years but on 3 February? Here are a few:

Army Staff Sgt. Ronnie L. Sanders was 26, married, and the father of two twin girls when he was killed in Iraq on 3 February 2007;

Army Sgt. 1st Class Lance S. Cornett was 33, married, and the father of three when he was killed in Iraq on 3 February 2006; SP4 Jesse M. Zamora was killed in a separate action there on that same date. When the soldiers arrived at his mother’s home in New Mexico to tell her the sad news, she had only one question for them: which son is it? Jesse’s brother, Tyrel, was also serving in Iraq at the time.

On 3 February 1968, nine men, two Marines and seven soldiers were killed in Vietnam. The youngest of them was 18. He was SP4 James B. Brandon. The eldest of them was 25. He was WO Howard D. Bennett.

There are many others. There are too many others.

5th/77th FA

FIRST a disclosure. I have been invited to a social function that is themed around this game. I haven’t watched at any nfl since the Falcons blew the stupid bowl game against the Patriots. I only watched at that one, again, it was a social function. I have not made up my mind if I will attend or not. My high school mascot for years was the Rams (61-70), beginning in 70, due to school consolidation, we became the Patriots and were that upon graduation in June of 71. My beloved GA Bulldogs have 2 players on the Rams Squad and 3 on the Patriots (1 on injured reserve) There are 21 SEC players in the game. All of that being said, the National Felon League can kiss my ass. Told homeboy’s wife that’s throwing the gig I may just gather all the girls up in the other TV room and we can watch the Puppy Bowl. I like puppies. They love you unconditionally, will not cheat on you, and don’t have their paws in your wallet. And no, I don’t have a mangina to get sand in, and no, I haven’t lost my man card. I like girls too. I’m queer that way.. And puppies. I ^Like^(+_+) the idea of Honoring the Warriors we lost on this day. As you said Air Cav, there are way yonder too many. To me, it is a toss up over which is sadder, a Warrior leaving young children who will never understand, or the parent, especially a Mother, who loses a child. “..which son is it”. We reading and posting here are the lucky ones. The “There but for the Grace of God go I” group. When we are reminded of these Warriors by the postings of the Survivors, particularly the Gold Star Mothers, the catch in our chests, throats, and eyes comes on and we wonder what else can we do for them. Maybe the reason we are here now is to tell their stories, say their names, and Honor who they were. As long as we do that, they will… Read more »

Go and enjoy your friendships, is my two cents. You do your part to remember. By the way, “They Shall Not Grow Old” is now in general release. I hope to see it tomorrow but, if not, this week.
