Antonin DeHays, French historian sentenced

| April 12, 2018

We talked about Antonin DeHays earlier this year when he pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of dog tags from the National Archives. He was sentenced to 364 days in prison and ordered to pay more than $43,000 in restitution;

The historian stole dog tags along with various documents, including personal letters, photographs, a Bible and pieces of downed US aircraft, from 2012 to 2017. DeHays was able to obtain the relics by using his researcher identification card to get access to the US’ National Archives research room in College Park, Maryland.

Some of the tags sold by the 33-year-old had dents and showed evidence of charring due to fires during crashes of Allied planes that were shot down within areas controlled by Germany, according to WTOP. Two of the dog tags stolen belonged to Tuskegee Airmen.

What a Shithead!

desert

No…that p.o.s. is below the bottom of the barrel and should be executed imho!

Ex-PH2

Good. It’s about damned time.

Herbert J Messkit

I’m okay with the 364 days, but there is no need for 3 years probation. Kick him out of the country, FOREVER.

Ret_25X

fly him back to France and kick him off the ramp at about…oh….25000 feet

E4 Mafia For Life.

I like that term, “High Altitude No Opening.”
What might the badge look like?

SFC D

A smashed pumpkin.

desert

Best idea yet, he will have time to think about why he is such an ASSHOLE!

26Limabeans

“I’m okay with the 364 days”

I’m not if means no felony on his rap sheet.

Hondo

He pleaded to a felony – 18 USC 641 has a max sentence of 10 years if the aggregate value of the property stolen is >$1,000. Since the low-life bastard was ordered to pay restitution of $40,000+, I’d guess that’s a given.

I’ll defer to 2/17 AC regarding the reason for 364 days vice the classic “year and a day” felony sentence. Personally, I’d love to have seen him get the year and a day, followed by immediate deportation and a permanent ban on reentry into the US.

Hopefully the terms of his probation include a stipulation on payment of restitution on or before his release date, with failure to do so within 15 days of release constituting a probation violation.

Ret_25X

I don’t know what is worse–the fact that he stole them or the fact that people wanted to buy such items.

ChipNASA

A mob of angry WWII veterans should have the right to beat his ass, like the Thieving Frog that he is.

SFC D

Frogsucker

NHSparky

Fuck this guy, his family, and everyone he ever did business with.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Drop him over Syria with a .30-06 Chauchaut and let him fight for his life.
A dish best served cold indeed 😉

The Other Whitey

With a Type-94 Nambu for a sidearm, in a nice, tight holster.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

That’s still too good for this poodle molester.

I say…. Give him an FP45-Liberator pistol

JacktheJarhead

Damn! You are cruel!!!! At least you could give him the 8mm Lebel version! Then he would last 10 minutes instead of 2 minutes.

Mailclerk

“You wanted tags? Here. Have one of mine.”

(Pulls out tag and nail gun)

KACHUNK!

“There ya go…”

NHSparky

Use a powder gun. More powerful.

A Proud Infidel®™️

Here’s hoping that Bubba, Thor and Company go up his ass every day he’s incarcerated.

HMCS(FMF) ret

I’m guessing that the smirk on his face in the photo will go away real quickly after the first DORKING of his SQUEAKHOLE by the guys at the BTJT Deli…

The Other Whitey

Enjoy your daily cockmeat sammiches in the hoosegow, you fucking asshole!

Ret_25X

I’m thinking he sees that as a reward

Atkron

He would have stolen French Dogtags; but like their WWII rifles….

Fuck off Antonin DeHays, right back to France.

Bernie Hackett

It is incomprehensible to me that this (looking for a descriptive word to express my disgust) ghoul would do this. Not much of a historian, and he’s a professional, reputely? I’m an advocate of bringing back the whipping post. Revoking his passport would be a start. In addition to flogging, branding would also have a salutory effect. In his case, “T” for thief, on his cheek or forehead. We’ll leave the ear cropping for some other offense.

11B-Mailclerk

Ear cropping is dome to feral cats when they are neutered.

You may be on to something.

RetiredDevilDoc8404

Please tell me this SOB has been permanently banned from the National Archives… His access to research materials in the futuure should be limited to Wikipedia. Man, what a douche.

2/17 Air Cav

The prosecutor had this SOB cold, dead to rights. The thefts and the sale of many stolen items on EBay were not in question or in doubt. But who wants to go to trial? As I’ve said before, I have no doubt that few federal prosecutors have ever tried a case. And this time? No trial. It was a plea bargain again, which was accepted by Judge Theodore D. Chuang. So, thanks to United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur for the sweet deal. BTW, the now-sorry thief stole for 4 1/2 years!

rgr769

Trial is hard work. Frequently it requires work for 12 to 14 hours a day during the trial. Gov’t “lawers” don’t get paid extra for doing trials. Most are lazy and just want to collect their regular gov’t paycheck for as little work as possible. I worked with one guy who was purportedly a civil litigator with a state agency for over 25 years and had never done a jury trial. He was quite skilled at playing “let’s make a deal,” so as to avoid his participation in a trial.

TF-BA

Don’t forget the “conviction rate” game that every AUSA hangs their hat on.

David

It should be mandatory that the sentence should be at least as long as the offense. He stole for almost 6 years. Steal stuff for 20 years? Sucks to be you.

Sparks

This ass hole is the worst sort of thief. He stole the history and valor of the dead, who died for our country. Shows me what valor means to the French.

I can’t help but wonder why the National Archives would let anyone walk out the doors with artifacts? Why? If something needs offsite study, there should be a huge written justification about why and what for and then a chain of custody and time limit. Plus a signed release holding the person/institution liable for damage, loss or failure to return.

This also tells me how much the National Archives cares about the many precious items in their collections. Since this happened repeatedly over 4 years.

No wonder they never found Kennedy’s brain.

I hope he gets ass pounded every day in jail.

David

I suspect the majority of the non-immigrant French would be just as condemnatory as we are. Like us, their politicians are atypical.

Sparks

When you’re right, you’re right.

11B-Mailclerk

I would rather think of Frenchman as Lafayette and Arnaud Beltrame.

Sgt Fon

i know there is some significance to the 364 VS 365 day sentence. any lawyer types out there know what it is?

2/17 Air Cav

I’m not 100% certain but I believe it has to do with an aggravated felony under immigration law. The magic number for that is 365 days and that triggers a boot from the country.

NHSparky

I have a better idea.

Ship his ass to England, then put him on a leaky landing craft across the English Channel.

200 yards shy of Omaha Beach, drop the ramp and make him swim/wade to shore, while a few dozen folks with MG 42’s unload on his ass.

If he makes it 100 yards inland, haul his ass back to England and make him do it again every day for the next four years.

HMC Ret

I would like to know how many of the potentially thousands who purchased these artifacts will face any scrutiny from LEOs. He didn’t sell them in a vacuum. Those artifacts are national treasures. He’s a national disgrace.
