Inter-service argument leads to homicide

| August 6, 2014

According to the Washington Times, William Earl Cunningham, 63, of Laurel, Montana and Nathan Horn, 40, of Billings got into an argument about which was the better service, the Army or the Marines – the argument ended with Cunningham getting charged with murder;

“I cut him. He’s dead,” Cunningham told police, according to charging documents, AP reported. “The knife’s on the table.”

From KRTV;

The men had previously argued about the military service, because Horn served in the Marines and Cunningham served in the Army, court records state.

During the conversation late Saturday, the men argued again and Cunningham said Horn “jumped up and took a swing” at him.

Cunningham pushed Horn back, court records state.

“Then I cut him,” Cunningham allegedly said. “I did what the Army taught me to do.”

According to police, Cunningham’s blood/alcohol was three times the legal limit for driving. The Washington Times reports that it wasn’t clear if either fellow had actually served.

Maybe one was onto the other? Had to cut ’em!

Idiots. One less idiot now.

UpNorth

If this plays out the way it should, there’ll be two less idiots, at least for 25 to life.

Well you see, we were drinkin’ and……..Darwinism at it’s best (Well almost one now has to go to jail).

I learned a lot from the Army. I mean a lot. However, I do not recall the Army teaching me to stab a drunken idiot, while myself being a drunken idiot, over a drunken, idiot, interservice rivalry argument. There seems to be a pattern…

“There seems to be a pattern…”

Yeah, I think I follow you.
IT WAS THE KNIFE!!!
Please join me in calling for a ban on all knives.
Do it for the children!

Oh, BUT OF COURSE, maybe we need to start a crusade for those “safety-tip knives” they espoused in Britain!!

EODJay

If it saves just one drunken idiot…

Well, when I went through Benning the Army did teach me to stab the shit out of those men that look like car tires and 2x4s…. I used to pretend that they were drunks.

Those guys were true bad-asses. I never could get one to go down no matter how many times I hit and stabbed him.

Critters like that existed on Fort Lost-in-the-Woods when I was a “Joe” in Basic & AIT. Badassed tough things with spring-loaded “arms” that refused to keel over and die no matter how loud I screamed while stabbing them!

Alberich

In the Army you’ll always meet a few people to teach you to do exactly what he did…to blame your own stupidity on the Army. They just teach it by example, is all.

Same here, I don’t recall either the Navy or the Army teaching me to resort to stabbing as a result of a drunken argument. Both services discouraged that nonsense. 🙄

The Other Whitey

It seems to me that somebody saying “I did what they trained me to do” when this kind of shit goes down is generally a big red flag for stolen valor.

Excellent point

MrBill

The 63-year-old Soldier bested the 40-year-old Marine. I’d say that settles it!

Horrible outcome, in all seriousness. In drunken fights no weapon more lethal than fists should be used.

Michael

I remember the day the Army Drill Sergeants taught us to use a knife. Use deadly force they said, especially when you’re drunk and arguing with Marines in a bar. Then blame everything on PTSD. Seems like yesterday.

Funny. I never carried anything more than a dull utility knife in Iraq.

Pinto Nag

Cunningham, you’re nothing but a drunken, sniveling coward, who murdered a man for no reason other than you had an ax to grind and a belly full of liquid courage.

I hope you get the needle, but the fact is, they should do it the time-honored way for you — with a tall tree and a short rope.

And what the hell is going on in Montana??

Pinto Nag

Oh, and just this…local news said Cunningham CUT HORN’S THROAT.

Mike and I will even the score.

Two drunken idiots took to fighting over which branch of the military is the best….instead of enjoying the fact that our military works in concert among all branches to protect and project our national interests.

I found bayonet training as interesting as anything else I learned, but I seldom need my knife while having a beer with friends. I tend to discover a need for my piano or a microphone, but never a weapon. Lucky I’m a happy sort when drinking (when I very rarely have a drink) and not a murderous or violent drunk like this piece of garbage.

On a side note: not so many guys smoking weed and getting into a murderous rage….more likely they would discuss the qualitative addition to life that hacky sack creates in a crowd and then head out for food…

Slick Goodlin

Given the circumstances the outcome probably would have been the same if they had been arguing which eggs were the best,
scrambled or fried.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Rather “which service is better”, we should be asking, based on the alcohol fueled fued … “Which service is dunber”?

And based on the results … I don’t think we have a concrete answer.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Delete “dunber” and insert “dumber”.
