Neighborhood evacuated for Veterans’ War souvenirs
Last year we wrote about a phony who took his stolen valor to the grave by the name of Staff Sgt. Willie Glenn “Bill” Floyd. Apparently he left more his family than his legacy of lies;
Floyd believes what was found on her and her late husband’s Crawford Street property was some type of container that held either grenades or military artillery rounds. She isn’t exactly sure if they were live or had been deactivated.
The same newspaper that gave our buddy, Doug Sterner a hard time when he called to tell them that they’d been deceived about Floyd’s military service (they said the family paid for the obit and they wouldn’t retract it) continues the lie;
A member of the 82nd Airborne and a Green Beret, Bill Floyd also served at one time in a field artillery unit.
Doug couldn’t find records of any of the medals Floyd claimed he earned;
He received 27 medals and ribbons: Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldier’s Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Purple Heart, U.S. Nonmilitary Decorations….
Floyd could afford all of those medals, but he couldn’t buy a flash for his beret?

Well, they have a comments section at the linked article.
Please, oh please, please, please let us know if there is any description of what was in that container! Please!
@Ex-PH2 it contains copies of his missing/destroyed in teh fire award records but because of the risk that it might contain explosives it will be destroyed without ever being opened. Its all part of the rightwing, military industrial complex conspiracy to keep President Obama from being re-elected.
Or maybe I’ve been reading too much DU today.
Seems the ‘Medal of Honor’ has fallen off the obit. hmmmm
Correct me if I’m wrong byut didn’t several commenters here explain that a Green Beret is a hat and not a soldier?
@SGT Kane, LMAO!
#5, BRILLIANT! hahaha
I wrote a comment in the comments section of the paper and wrote this letter to the Editor. Dear Editor, Its been reported yet again that your paper is reporting untrue information about the military awards of Mr Bill Floyd. A recent article in your paper stated he had earned the Silver Star and Distinguished Service Cross. Your obituary a while back printed other incorrect information, such as his being awarded a Medal of Honor. A quick internet check of rosters that list the recipients of these awards would reveal that he never received any of them. I do not know who started these false claims…. either the deceased or his family. I do know that its an insult to every veteran who has earned these medals for the news media to constantly report claims by individuals who never earned these medals. I personally think the city and your paper have been taken for a ride yet again by a family who craves attention and loves to see these false claims in print. The idea that somehow there was an “unknown” danger in a box in his belongings is ludicrous. It’s tough to admit you were taken in, but the right thing to do is write an expose on what the Floyd Family has done to your paper and the community. They are thieves. They have stolen the valor of men who were awarded the medals and have stolen the taxpayers money by having them pay for a response to their hoax just to get their name and false claims in the paper again. Other than just criticism I have some recommendations for your paper for dealing with military claims. First, though not foolproof, a quick internet check can confirm the awards of any medals of valor above the Bronze Star. Any reports on Veterans who claim service should be done in conjunction with the paper getting a copy of the Veteran’s DD214 through the Freedom of information act. People making claims of veteran’s status and awards should be made aware of the fact the records will be checked and… Read more »
# 8 Awesome
Looks like it’s FOIA time again to see what decorations this guy actually received during his career. Hope a full name and Vietnam-era service is enough for a records “hit”.
FOIA ready and will go out in today’s mail. Turns out his obit had a DOB and POB, so I’m fairly sure we’ll get a hit.
