I was a Sergeant then. The accomodations were Quonset huts (with a view of Fuji out the back window…a nice way to wake up in the morning) and shower/head blocks at the end of each row of huts. Hey, since my last name wasn’t published, how’d you know it was me?

No, that item is an AN/TCC-70 multiplexer.

I hated working on those because I knew NOTHING about them!

It was a stupid waste of time just unplugging and plugging individual modules and switching back and forth, and since all of the modules looked exactly alike, it was very confusing and frustrating.

You are correct about the wristwatch being verboten in an electronics shop.

The normal procedure would have been to hang the wristwatch from the collar buttonhole or left pocket flap of my jungle fatigue shirt.

I think I was probably just posing for the camera, but actually working somewhere else.

I did a lot of a little of everything there, all over the place.

I saw a photograph in this post of ANOTHER guy who was in the 501st Signal Battalion!

It’s “SJ”.

I wonder when he was there?

I don’t recall seeing that sign that he’s standing next to.

Thank you.

Are you a clansman?

Which clan are you associated with?

Might we have crossed paths at some recent Celtic festival or Highland games?

I’m currently the officially appointed bard of Clan Henderson.

I was adopted when I was a wee toddler, so I grew up never knowing about my wee bit of Scottish heritage (through my biological paternal great grandmother, Judith Henderson), and only learned of it a few years ago.

It’s even more ironic, since I grew up as an “Army brat” in Cumberland County, North Carolina, which was settled by the Scots.

Jacobite- Is that the barracks site at the intersection of the north entrance from Talil into Nasiriyah at the crossroads that runs west? If so, that was our checkpoint position after the Gulf War. Ziggurat of Ur directly south??

Of course, “Mr. Saddam’s” picture was everywhere, but he seems especially charismatic with you by his side.

SJ

@56 John Robert: actually that is the 101st Signal Co (Prov). I thought someone would wave the BS flag on me. In those days, a separate Brigade had a Signal Company since it did not have the assets from a Division Signal Battalion (also had an aviation company for the same reason). I was in the 1st BDE/101st(ABN)(Sep). The 1/101(Sep) had been in country for years and then the 101st came in in late ’67. The 1/101 remained a sep Brigade (with a BG commanding)until well after Tet. There was no love between the 101st and the 1/101 since a Div brought with it a lot of REMF overhead and area beautification BS. I joined the 1/101(Sep) in Dec 67 in Song Be. After Tet they moved us to Hue/Phu Bai and shortly there after the 1/101 returned to being a Division Brigade. Lucky for me, the 3/82nd ABN (Sep) came in country and I was assigned to them as the BDE Signal Officer until DEROS in Dec 68. More than you ever wanted to know.

Jacobite

I think this was a bit south of where you’re talking about. This was near the entrance to the original detainee holding zone, off base, the ziggurat was indeed south, but the position you’re speaking of was north of this location. If you have Google Earth look up; 30 degrees 58′ 17,84″ North – 46 degrees 06′ 55.54″ East, that’s the exact location of the building in the photo. We were supposed to be intercepting any personnel trying to dodge the main checkpoint and reach the road through the old detention zone. Sucked. 3 man teams, no entrenchment, no hardening, no lights after dark, and our heaviest weapon a M249, and oh ya, a 2 – 5 minute minimum response time for any QRF. It really felt like being hung out to dry to this old truck driver. The big plus was the really long fields of fire, anybody trying us had absolutely no where to hide.

And ya, I’ve always been amazed by the number of likenesses of that megalomaniac scattered across the country. There’s an interesting story about Sadam’s megalomania concerning some of the rebuilt portions of Nebuchadnezzar’s palace in Babylon as well. He was Unreal.

ARoberts

Jacobite, I remember that area rather well. Spent some time there in 03 with 2/43 ADA when we came through there. Some interesting times were had in that AO lol.

Jacobite

Lol, ya, I can remember our first convoy through An Nasiriyah where we were getting huge thumbs up from crowds of locals just 200 yards from the site of the 507th Maintenance Company fubar, and about 2 weeks later having some of the locals throwing bricks at us as we rolled through, lol. I loved the history of the place though. A bunch of us took every opportunity to ramble around in our off time exploring the ruins and such. Did the same up at Babylon, I feel fortunate to have been there during the ‘wild west’ days so to speak, we had totally uncontrolled access to lots of historic sites that Theater Command later put nearly off limits and severely restricted access to. It was cool as hell to step out of our tent in the morning and look north-east and see the sun rising with the ziggurat in the fore ground. 🙂

Elric

Nothing changed then. Back in ’91 we would watch the the Shiites and the Republican Guard hammering away at each other about 1 km right in front of our positions. F-ing T-72s and Hinds working over the locals and we couldn’t drop the hammer on them no matter how much we begged. Even the most junior private knew the job was left unfinished and we’d be back again someday.

John Robert Mallernee

SJ:

Look how much things have changed!

The 501st Signal Battalion no longer exists.

In fact, I don’t think the 101st Airborne even has a signal unit.

I just looked at their web site and they don’t show any signal unit.

Not only that, but the Signal Corps no longer exists!

Today, it’s called the Signal Regiment.

I was in Viet Nam from 12 December 1969 until 21 February 1972.

(I extended my tour twice – – – , which is how I got a special leave to visit Israel, and flew completely around the globe!)

I started out in Saigon with the Phu Lam Signal Battalion of the 1st Signal Brigade, and I went to the 101st Airborne in June of 1970, staying with them until the division left Viet Nam.

Thank you.

Jacobite

@Elric, Yup, I pulled my volunteer sheet to please my ex-wife in 1990, and figured I’d get my chance eventually anyway. I was right. 🙂

@Jason, I’ve heard it changed a lot in the year or two after we left. Some of my guys ended up back over there one and two times after our first deployment, everyone agrees our first rotation was the ‘best’. lol.

Gawd it was pool table flat around there though, excellent armor terrain.

SJ, Et Alii:

I don’t remember any “outside man” when I was on KP.

I remember the DRO (i.e., “Dining Room Orderly”) was what everybody was trying for.

I almost always wound up doing pots and pans, cleaning the grease trap, and/or peeling potatoes and/or onions.

Viet Nam was nice because we had Vietnamese civilian KPs.

The day before I left for Viet Nam, I was at Fort Lewis, Washington.

Since somebody had to pull KP, and they wanted to be able to give as many guys as possible that night off, they selected just a few of us to pull KP for twenty-four straight hours.

Guess what?

I was one of those “lucky” few that got selected – – – AND, I was on pots and pans!

As I scrubbed and scoured, covering my uniform with grease and suds, the local radio station played a hit song over and over.

It was Joan Baez singing, “THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OL’ DIXIE DOWN”.

So, I went from pulling KP straight to the aircraft that would take me to Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Viet Nam.

I think it was World Airlines, or something like that.

At the time, I could sing, but I couldn’t play a guitar.

While I was in Korea, one of the guys taught me how to strum chords on a guitar.

So, now, you can watch my YOU TUBE video of ME(!) singing that song, “THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OL’ DIXIE DOWN”.

Meh, what the hell–I was a middie. ROTC, Georgia Tech. The SSBN was my 3rd class cruise. Even though they gave me “middie fish”, after I dropped out of GT and went into the nuke pipeline, when I got to my first boat the SWO and Qual PO said I was doing the whole card, no exceptions. Fine by me as I went from a T-hull to a 688.

And when you’re qualifying RO/SRO, it seemed to be a little harder to juggle quals, although systems like ventilation, trim and drain, etc., were a lot simpler, and there’s no missile systems.

Besides, how many boomer fags can talk about playing “smiles” in the PI?

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

OK .. I can play that game:

For $5.00 you could rent a midget and throw him from the roof of a four story building, across an alley, and into the the three story roof pool of the Begger’s Banquent.

Oh .. for $2.00 you could throw a dart into some dude’s back.

For $1.00 all the dog or monkey you could eat on a stick.

And my favorite … for 50 cents you could buy a bottle of beer!

NHSparky

50 cents? Really? You’re getting ripped. My first time to PI the San Magoos at Island Girls were 8 pesos (25 pesos to dollar in the late 80’s.) or you could hit the Sari-Sari store and get a warm six-pack for 20 pesos, and a pack of PI smokes was 6 pesos (not recommended.)

But yeah, most civilians can’t even comprehend what POOR really is until they see some of the neighborhoods off Magsaysay or in the boonies.
