6 Taliban hold off the Pakistani Army for 16 hours
Gary sends us a link to a story about something that must be pretty embarrassing for the Pakistani Army. Financial Times link (registration required);
The strike on the PNS Mehran base, by six well-armed militants, launched on Sunday night, raged for 16 hours as army forces tried to regain control over the high-security area.
Twelve Pakistani security personnel were killed in the latest attack on military installations across Pakistan; 15 were injured.
The militants’ targets were two P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft, the “eyes and ears” of Pakistan’s navy in anti-submarine warfare, supplied to the country by the US during the past year. One aircraft was destroyed; another damaged.
Defence analysts said the strike on sophisticated military assets was intended to undermine confidence in the military’s ability to protect its most prized assets, including the country’s nuclear arsenal.
Imagine a determined attack by a large Taliban force (probably seven or more is sufficient) on a nuclear facility. The six invaders’ first round was a rocket fired at the aircraft – their primary targets.

D’OH!
I’m a little more interested in the “intended targets.” Why are they going after the Orions? Symbolic attack on American presence in Pakistan……or is there a reason that they want to degrade maritime surveillance capabilities?
So basically we could take out Pakistan’s nukes, and all the prime real estate, with a 5 year old from California.
I am sure the nukes are more heavily guarded. So I think we would need at least a Boy Scout troop.
Heavily guarded by elite Pakistani commandoes? I’ll concede a troop of Brownies armed with pink Halo Kitty 410s would be enough.
Why they took so long? Trying to avoid friendly fire casualties. 🙂
Uh oh, looks like Pakistan just got absorbed into the borg. Won’t they be surprised:

Key sentence: “China has “warned in unequivocal terms that any attack on Pakistan would be construed as an attack on China”, a media report claimed today.”
Sweet!
Does this mean that China is going to war with the Taliban and that Chinese military operations will now be absorbed as part of the ISAF?
Never mind….guess there was only one way to read that article.
Where’s General MacArthur when you need him?
What it means is that China’s political leaders are now behind its military leaders. Does the Paper Tiger have claws? Depends on how well they reverse engineered all our stuff the Clintons sold them a few years ago.
Considering Obama bows to Hu at every occasion, my question is entirely rhetorical.
