A puzzle! Maybe YOU can be a congresscritter?

| April 17, 2011

If you can figure this out I’d sure vote for you.

This is via Drudge and I suspect most readers/commenters here have seen it, but it begs many questions that the TAH gang might be able to explain. I sure can’t!

The super rich pay a lot less taxes than they did a couple of decades ago, and nearly half of U.S. households pay no income taxes at all.

I highlighted the kicker.  Of course the tax exempt AP is trying to make a different point.  Those damn rich people and all that.

Speaking of work… half of the U.S. household have no income? Seems to me either a bunch of folks are not working, OR they’re simply taking advantage of the same sort of things The Rich do?

I’m a disabled Vet, and I’m paying a mortgage. OUR household pays Federal Taxes… What are we doing wrong?

If the “super rich” are paying less taxes, and the lower half of the country pays nothing at all, then the “dirty little secret” is that taxes must have gone up on those merely or barely “rich” and especially on the working middle class.

The rhetoric of the politicians is to make you feel better about your ever increasing tax burden by supposedly “raising” taxes on the wealthy, who have full time accountants to help them see to it that they don’t pay any more.

I’m a Nasty Guard E6, and been on active orders since I went to basic in 2004. Three years ago, I stopped having any money taken out at all from my paycheck, because I just kept getting it all back come tax time. I haven’t paid federal income tax in years.

We are doing pretty well on my E6 (+”with dependents” BAH) pay. My wife stays home with our two kids. We just bought a house. Now that I have a toaster oven and refrigerator devoted solely to beer, I consider myself firmly in the middle class. I can’t fathom why I don’t pay anything; it benefits me, but I think the current system is grotesquely unfair. Everyone benefits in some way, and everyone should pay SOMETHING, even if it’s a token $25. Even when I was an unemployed newlywed, we could have managed $25 a year.

It’s a big secret that most American households don’t make enough money to pay the federal income tax, after tax credits and deductions (kids, mortgages, marriage, etc). In 2007 Exxon paid more in income taxes (across all holdings, not just US) than the bottom 44% of Americans paid in deferal income taxes. What that statistic doesn’t say is that most of them still pay into things like FICA and are counted in payroll and state taxes. So it’s not taxes derived from income, it’s that specific federal income tax come the end of the year.

#4 NSOM – think you’re right. There’s also taxes for items that are purchased, and property taxes and so on. Figure in all forms of taxation, and the statistics go haywire.

My personal beef: it’s not how much I pay, but the incredibly arcane @_)%*$)#*( tax rules that I can’t figure out.

Frankly Opinionated

,,,,and of those who don’t pay, many even get money that they did not pay it, Earned Income Credit thingy. The press can take any number, any figure and twist and shape it until it fits the story, regardless of the facts.
While am on this- We do not need to collect more taxes; we need to spend less.

The IRS data shows that the top 10% of wage earners pay 70% of the overall tax bill. Now, if we’re talking about the uber rich, they don’t really pay taxes, because they have people that show them all the loopholes. Now, it’s interesting that the 2 groups of people yelling the loudest about the rich paying their fair share are those that don’t pay taxes i.e. the uber rich and the bottom 50% of wage earners. If someone wanted to try and untwist the lefts version of logic, when it comes to “fair”, then we would have to go to a flat tax and remove all loopholes, that way everyone would have “skin in the game”, from Warren Buffet and Bill Gates all the way down to the counter person at Mickey Ds. But, but, but that’s not fair!! Bullshit, that’s as fair as you can get.

But, OT, the dependent class wouldn’t worship at the feet of the dem party if they had to pay. It’s so much easier, and more fun, to bitch about the evil rich, and claim they don’t pay their share. While Obumbler and folks like Dickie Durbin and the rest of them continue to tell us they aren’t pissing on our legs, it’s just raining.

“I’m a disabled Vet, and I’m paying a mortgage. OUR household pays Federal Taxes… What are we doing wrong?”

From the liberal’s point of view you did several things wrong:

(1) You were in the service.
(2) After the service you got a non-government job.
(3) You never went on welfare.

The way to make it in the USA today is to go to Mexico, become a Mexican citizen, sneak across the border into the USA and become an illegal. You will get free medical care for you and your family, free education for your kids, and even some of my Social Security money.

“Now that I have a toaster oven and refrigerator devoted solely to beer….”

I’ve never heard of toaster oven beer. How do you make it?

Old Trooper

UpNorth; Yeah, you’re right. Sorry I blew up. 🙂
