The administration official emphasized the importance this day held for Italian Americans as one of his talking points. President Donald Trump responded by referring to the day as Columbus Day.

If their societies were so advanced, why didn’t they sail East and conquer Europe? Seriously, why didn’t the Indigenous People of what is now North and South America establish cities, institutions of learning, functioning governments that forged alliances with neighboring nations, and establish international trade routes? In the 1500’s Europeans were sailing around the Horn of Africa to trade with Asian nations, while those in North and South America were living in mud huts. They didn’t even have horses until the explorers brought some on their journeys.

We were marching around Camp Able Sentry, often called Camp Anal Entry, when one of my junior NCOs starting belting this classic out. The company managed to double, or maybe triple, their volume, until some female colonel took offense.

So, it was a matter of time, as technology was mature enough to make cross Atlantic sailing sustainable.
Compare to the Norse exploration of North America, which pushed the limits of technology, as long boats were not capable of maintaining a consistent supply line across the Atlantic.
Another example is the Apollo missions to the moon, which also pushed the limits of technology for their time, as opposed to current space technology.

That guy, and all of his guys had BALLS!. Big fucking balls that clanked when they walked. Him and his crew sailed the Atlantic in three boats between 70′ & 50′ and weighing around 50 tons. As someone who crossed the Atlantic several times, think about doing it 60-something foot sailboat? I was in Barcelona in ’85, and they had replica of the Santa Maria. Nope, not sailing the Atlantic in that dinghy.
My first Navy deployment started in 1991 and ended in 1992. We sailed the Atlantic, from Spain to North America in 1992. Our cruise shirt had the Christopher Columbus voyage as a theme.

Years ago a farmer in Idaho sued the state because of the “Famous Potatoes” motto on the license plates. Not too bad a workday for me. On the clock for less than seven hours, with a whopping 11 ATMs serviced (I’m not used to such a light day). I’m still getting used to going into banks when they’re closed; I tend to deactivate the alarm system only after it’s gone off (waste time trying to find it and figuring out the correct code). Police haven’t shown up yet, so there’s that.
Otherwise, yep, it’s Columbus Day! Indigenous, indignant, indigo, be damned, I prefer to be disingenuous.

I usually only care about Columbus Day because I get the day off, but noooooo, an artillery unit had to decide to train today so here I sit supporting their training while not getting paid. That last sentence was typed with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. I love supporting soldiers and know that I will get paid eventually
Columbus Day is also the name of the first book in my favorite book series called Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson. I’m not into science fiction usually, but that series is funny as hell. It’s set a couple of years into the future and the main character is soldier and a member of the E4 mafia. Humans get dragged into a war between alien species that has been going on for millennia. The main character ends up doing something where the alien species that is in charge forces the human military to promote him to a full bird Colonel as a publicity stunt. There is a lot more to it and the series is like 18 books long. I highly recomend it.

I’m always looking for a good sci-fi series, so I went to order that one for the Kindle. Turns out, according to Amazon, “You own this item.” Looks like I bought it in 2017. I’ll get around to reading it eventually. 🙂
The Horseclans series is a.good sci-fi / post apocalypse series as well.
I highly highly recommend it.
