A French politician demands return of the Statue of Liberty

French member of parliament Raphaël Glucksmann demanded that the United States return the Statue of Liberty to France. Glucksmann argued that Americans have sided with tyranny and accused the U.S. of “firing” its best researchers. He insinuated that this individuals, through freedom and innovation, were the reason for our being the leading power. Glucksmann, a strong supporter for Ukraine, criticized President Donald Trump’s Ukraine policies.

A French Parliament member is demanding that the U.S. return the Statue of Liberty to France, who gifted it to the Americans in the 1880s.
Center-left politician Raphaël Glucksmann made the comments at a recent convention of his political party, Place Publique.
“We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty,'” he told supporters, according to Le Monde, a French newspaper.
“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So, it will be just fine here at home,” he added.
France presented the Statue of Liberty to America on July 4, 1884, before it was later unveiled in New York City on Oct. 28, 1886, by then-President Grover Cleveland for the centennial of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

I got to work alongside the 7th French Foreign Legion about 32-33 years ago. They looked tough. Muscles like Arnold. Nice equipment. I expected some real badassery, but was not overly impressed. Traded some patches and badges, and we swapped some of our MREs for some of theirs (which also sucked), had fun – all in all, but I’d put an American Infantry unit against them anytime, at a three or four to one ratio in their favor, and watch them get spanked.
Now, that’s been over 30 years ago, so it may be different now, but I highly doubt it.

The name of the monument is Liberty Enlightening the World.
It’s purpose was to tell other nations that they, too, could be free if the adopted the protection of liberties provided for by our Constitution and outlined in the Declaration of Independence.
Some years ago certain people tried to promote it as the Statue of Immigration welcoming strangers to our country.
The poem read at the dedication was not “Give us your poor huddled masses.”
It was America, Fairest of Freedom’s Daughters.
