Weekend Open Thread

| November 8, 2024

I saw a video segment of the women on The View. They were talking about the election results. One of the women pointed to the lack of control over social media and went on to criticize certain social media companies. There was another video, it looked like it was from CNN, where one of the speakers accused the right of “being in echo chambers”. Right after she said that, the others on the panel quickly agreed with her. It’s like how one of the commenters on this site insinuates that we’re an echo chamber. Enjoy your weekend!

Shit!

KoB

Exactly what your hopes and dreams of EARNING (never awarded) The Coveted TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread FIRST have turned to, Mr. Stone.

Now all I have to do is await all of the hatred that will be foisted upon The Gun Bunny for his being at the right place at the right time. In honor of your solid sloppy seconds finish I will award you a dose of this RVS bug that I’ve picked up. It will give you a second reason to…suffer.

For all others that don’t hate upon The King of Battle…THE King of First, help your selves to the vast stores available @ Fire Base Magnolia. Imma gonna be under this blanket on the couch, coughing my damn fool head off.

E. Conboy

KoB, sounds like it’s time for Sister Mary Margaret’s Fool Proof Cough Remedy:
1/4 cup Jack, 1/4 cup honey, 1/4 cup lemon or orange juice, 1/4 cup water, mixed. Take a tablespoon every 4-6 hours for a day or two. But see your PCP if you have a fever, lots of shi- going around these days mimic ‘colds’.
Chest X-rays might be beneficial. Love, a Mama

KoB

Similar recipe, substituted Crown for Jack and deleted the H2O. Oh…and that’s a one dose mixture. Only thing that’s gotten me halfway thru the last coupla days.

A Proud Infidel®™

You HAVE to be careful with Dihydrogen Monoxide, that compound will corrode cast iron!!!

5JC

The Whooping Cough is going around and it is rough. I had it from mid September til last week. Every day was worse than the last. It can go on longer. I thought I was going to cough a lung out.

I started using a strong antibacterial mouthwash gargle in late October a couple of times a day and there was a big drop off and it went away about a week after. Not sure if that was the reason or not but it seemed to help.

Hack Stone

Hack should have hung up on that sales call. Wouldn’t make any difference if Hack close the sale, the courts ordered all of the income garnished to pay the rent.🥴

Now Hack has to get back to that exit ramp on River Road and move some software.

Dennis - not chevy

Thinking of selling on the exit ramp reminded me of one of the numerous times I was caught at a complete stop in a Chicago traffic jam (similar to a LA traffic jam only colder). All at once I spotted several youts riding their skate boards through the stalled traffic. The youts each carried a carton of cigarettes; they went car door to car door selling packs of cigarettes. As I don’t smoke cigarettes, I have no idea how much they were asking for a pack nor if they bought them or stole them.

Still, I must give the youts credit for taking advantage of a potential market.

Hack Stone

No sense in letting a good cut & paste go to waste.

Oh, wise and all knowing Magic 8-Ball, will Hack Stone experience the joy of regaining the highly coveted and rarely awarded title of First Commenter for the This Ain’t Hell Weekend Open Thread, or will he be burdened by what has not been in a vast chicken wing foisted upon his loyal subjects by the Deplorable Garbage who want to pack Diana Ross and The Supremes, revoke our Constitutional Right to party, and take us back to the days when gasoline was $2 a gallon? Well, darn. Dropped it earlier than even recent events would indicate. Missed another FIRST (it’s been a while since I could claim that). Rats of the Cong to the King!

Meanwhile, trivia, anyone?

DID YOU KNOW…?
Was one Major League Baseball player responsible for two big changes to the rule book?
By Commissioner Wretched

This past Tuesday was Election Day, and voters nationwide selected a president for this great country of ours.

I hope your candidate won.

With lines like that, I ought to be in politics, but I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy – if I had any, that is.

Whichever direction the country chooses to go, red or blue (I know those aren’t directions, but humor me), there will always be one neutral thing, that is not swayed by left or right, and that’s trivia. A lot of which I have stockpiled, and some of which I shall dole out to you right now.

Enjoy, and I hope you remembered to vote! If you didn’t vote, you don’t get to complain about who the rest of us elected.

Did you know …

… what the term is for a group of grasshoppers? It’s called a cloud. (I can understand why. So could you if you ever see a big enough group.)

… some old medical “cures” were pretty wild? For instance, in the 18th Century book Primitive Physick, or An Easy and Natural Method of Curing Most Diseases, a rather “out there” treatment for asthma is discussed. According to British theologian John Wesley (1703-1791), one can treat asthma with “a fortnight on boiled carrots only.” (It probably won’t help the asthma, but it will sure give you great vision!)

Commissioner Wretched

… you may suffer from ornithophobia? If you do, you have a fear of birds. (That one is for the birds.)

… Antarctica has icequakes? Occurring only within the ice sheet, and not on the underlying land, these seismic events (also called cryoseisms) have similar characteristics as earthquakes, but happen much faster when water freezes quickly. (Cold, very cold.)

… some kinds of rice paper do not have any rice in them? Original rice paper is a translucent edible paper made of rice flour, tapioca flour, salt and water. But the most widely-known forms of rice paper are actually made from tree bark. (Write on it in vegetable-based ink and you’ve got something there.)

… cocaine used to be sold over the counter? Until the 1880s, cocaine was a legal substance that was used to treat sore throats, neuralgia, nervousness, headaches, colds, and even sleeplessness. (Hmmmmm …)

Roh-Dog

It was while trying to treat a woman for hysteria – a neurosis then believed to emanate from the vagina – that Freud and Fleiss botched the operation and almost killed the patient later immortalised as “Irma” in The Interpretation of Dreams, where Freud glosses over an episode that today would have led to disgrace, a loss of his licence to practice, maybe even lawsuits and jail time.

I’ll leave you to read the rest of the article, How Cocaine Influenced the Work of Sigmund Freud, on your own. NSFW, slang, opinioning… it’s Vice.
Still can’t figure how/why it’s illegal. Way less addictive than coffee, or fast women.

Commissioner Wretched

… one player caused two rule changes in Major League Baseball? When Eddie Stanky (1916-1999) was an active player for the Chicago Cubs, New York Giants, Boston Braves, and other teams, he would do things to distract opposing hitters such as jumping around on the field, making odd movements and bizarre gestures. It wasn’t illegal then – but it became so in 1950, when MLB made a rule that says fielders cannot be in a batter’s line of vision and deliberately try to distract the batter. Another of Stanky’s antics would happen if he happened to be a runner at third base. If a fly ball was hit, Stanky would back up from the base about twenty feet, then begin running so that when the ball was caught, his foot would be on the base. He would thus have something of a head start in running home. Another MLB rule was passed requiring the runner to stay on the base until the fly ball was caught. (He was something of a stanky ballplayer. Sorry; I had to do it.)

… taking a fall does not injure an ant? They are so small and light that no matter how far they fall, they do not suffer injuries. They do, however, feel pain when the fall is over. (Boy, do they ever.)

… Roman gladiators were probably rather fat? Sure, you didn’t see that in the movie Gladiator, but it’s most likely true. They ate a high-energy vegetarian diet, which included calcium-rich ash. This helped create in the gladiators a layer of fat which helped protect them from otherwise-fatal sword wounds. (Whatever works, I suppose.)

Roh-Dog

so small and light that no matter how far they fall, they do not suffer injuries.

Most rodents too. Supposedly cats…

Not to long ago I asked AI ‘what is the largest animal that cannot be killed by a fall’ and it spit out the sloth (unsure about the toe count. Guess AI don’t know Joe Kittinger either).

I guess it makes sense as they are gangly, covered in hair (and mold!), muscular, and reside in trees so the way down is more of a pinballing as opposed to Wile E. Coyote-ing.

Commissioner Wretched

Cats have a better chance of surviving a fall from 20 stories than from 7 … they have more time in the air to adjust themselves to landing on all four feet (assuming that’s what they wanted to do in the first place).

Due to Bob Gibson’ 1968 season (1.12 ERA, 13 shutouts, 28 complete games) the height of ALL pitcher’s mounds was reduced by 6″.

Oh, and I have read repeatedly that Alexander lobbed rotting dead horses into enemy water supplies two millennia earlier.

Commissioner Wretched

… only one candidate of a political party has been nominated and run for president six times? Socialist Party candidate Norman Thomas (1884-1968) was nominated by his party in the elections of 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944 and 1948. His best showing was in 1932, with 884,885 votes nationwide. (Six tries and no wins … you would think he would get the message or something.)

… biological weapons have been around a very long time? During the Middle Ages, it was not unheard of for armies laying siege to a city to toss pots of bubonic plague in, to force the city’s surrender. And during the reign of King Louis XIV of France (1638-1715), an Italian chemist offered him biological weapons. The king not only refused the offer, he paid the chemist an annual salary to never reveal the weapons to anyone else.

… you may have nephophobia? If you do, it’s nothing really to worry about. Nephophobia is the fear of clouds. Studies show that a traumatic weather experience in childhood can lead to developing a healthy (or maybe unhealthy, I don’t know) fear of clouds or of weather in general. (Weather doesn’t bother me too much, except when it’s bad.)

… pigeons are art connoisseurs? Sort of, anyway. Research done in 1995 has shown that pigeons are able to tell the difference between works of art created by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Claude Monet (1840-1926). (I’ll let you figure out what the pigeons do on the work they don’t like.)

… you have never had pear cider? Sure, you might think you had some just the other day, but you didn’t. Actual cider is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented apples, and only from apples. One can make an alcoholic drink from pears, but it’s called perry, not cider. (I don’t drink, so I’ve never had either one.)

Now … you know!

Hack Stone

You need to read other comments than your own. Hack posted a few weeks back that while getting his eyes calibrated, the lady commented that he must be eating his carrots because his vision improved. Hack then told her about British Intelligence using carrots=improved vision to throw the Germans off from British radar systems.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/a-wwii-propaganda-campaign-popularized-the-myth-that-carrots-help-you-see-in-the-dark-28812484/

Commissioner Wretched

Oh, I know that carrots don’t do anything to help vision. But like most kids my age, I grew up watching Bugs Bunny and he never needed glasses, so …

With regard to alternative medical treatments, some of them actually have positive effects.

The ketogenic diet that is now all the rage among internet-savvy bros and soccer moms was originally developed as a treatment for epilepsy – though much more restrictive than today’s fad diet, it has been shown to be at least as effective as traditional epilepsy medications.

Why do people do this? Don’t make hysterical, neurotic, histrionic promises you then don’t keep.
Don’t claim you’ll flee to Canada or France if the Democrats don’t get in. It was silly when “W” won and Trump won his first presidency and it’s sillier now.
Don’t play make-believe that he didn’t win and that he isn’t the president. And don’t act like you’re going to join some “Rebel Alliance” to defeat an evil Empire.
Your side lost. Analyze why you failed and get ready for the next elections. Don’t claim the Electoral College, which grants the Democrats California [54 electors], New York [28 electors] and DC [1 elector] gratis every election, isn’t fair.

He may not understand vaccines but he knows what a woman is…. and is not. Gonna call that a step in the right direction.

And he isn’t even a biologist

Hack Stone

The woman was angry that day, my friends – like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli. I got about five feet into the bedroom and suddenly, the great beast appeared before me. I tell you, she was 300 pounds. As if sensing my presence, she let out a great bellow. I said, “Easy, big fella!” And then, as I watched her struggling to get her pants off, I realized that something was obstructing her breathing.

From where I was standing, I could see directly into the eye of the one night stand. Well then, from out of nowhere, a huge tidal wave of fat lifted me, tossed me onto the bed, and I found myself right on top of her – face to face with her blowhole. I could barely see from the waves of fat crashing down upon me, but I knew something was there. So I reached my hand in, felt around, and pulled out the obstruction.

She was all over me. It was like Rocky 1. Diane came up to me, threw her arms around me, and kissed me. We both had tears streaming down our faces. I never saw anyone so beautiful. It was at that moment I decided to tell her I was not a biologist!

rgr769

Bravo! What a story. Reminds me of a bar pickup when I was really too drunk to even walk. But who is Diane?

5JC

They were passing out vasectomies at the convention. I’m going to go ahead and say that was awesome, and very Darwin of them.

Hack Stone

We need a separate thread titled Celebrity Meltdowns featuring videos of the Hollywood elite sobbing to the camera over the Trump-Vance victory. Friday afternoon on Fox News had a clip of Rosie O’Donnell saying that we need to do away with the racist Electoral College and select our President by the popular vote. Obviously she missed that Trump won the popular vote.

Hack Stone

Why do celebrities think that their endorsements carry more weight than the average voter’s? Nobody gives a fuck who Hack Stone supports, and Hack’s endorsement was responsible for swaying zero votes for his preferred candidate, and billionaires Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift should have the same power to influence. Speaking of which, they are starting to crack open the ledgers on the Harris-Walz campaign, and it turns out that supporter Oprah Winfrey was paid $1,000,000 to interview Kamala Harris. Up until today, Hack Stone was not aware that it was acceptable to pay people who endorse you to interview you. So what they presented to the voting public was mor e of an infomercial.

Fyrfighter

Dems some good ones! lol

fm2176

The election results were much better than I expected. Winning the popular vote as well as the electoral is the icing on the cake. The fact that one side turns to emotional outbursts on camera, while the other falls back on humor says a lot. Libs are mostly shallow, narrow-minded and short-sighted victim cosplayers. Conservatives tend to roll with the punches, knowing that if things get bad, we’re better prepared to persevere. Four years of Trump saw the Left losing their mind and resorting to unprecedented measures to dethrone Trump. Nearly four years of Biden has seen the Right hunker down, while spreading some absolutely hilarious memes. Biden is easy prey, but Kamala was wholly unprepared when she became nominee.

For some great coverage of liberal tears, Mark Dice has been gloating over the win: Mark Dice – YouTube. I can’t blame him; the very people having breakdowns were the ones that, until a few days ago, were smug and confident that their candidate was a shoo-in for 47.

You know, I might have to buy a Glock 47 now, though I’ll have to wait until after I start my new job, so the 17 or 45 will be my duty gun for now. I just like the thought of carrying the 47, with the 45 as a backup. Glock can keep their 44 and 46 (which will likely never see release over here anyway) …

5JC

You should expand your collection to include whatever rifle the police killed the wannabe with, as well as the SS sniper rifle. Then you can also have the loser assassin collection of all the ghetto guns they tried to Trump with like the SKS conversion and the Aero AR with the AEMS RDS and 45 degree Amazon Offset BUIS.

fm2176

No thanks, I had a Bubba-ized SKS 25 years ago, and I two AR-15s are enough for now. I’m not a precision shooter, and don’t have tax dollars to spend either, so a modern sniper rifle is out of the question. Besides, I’m stuck in the ’90s, so a good old Remington 700P or an HK PSG-1 (if I win the lotto) would take priority. 😀

Hi, all. So, in the days following the election, I’ve been doing some post-election analysis. And since then, I’ve been fairly reluctant to call Trump’s Victory a landslide. Rats o’th Cong at the Gun Bunny.

It was a good week.
Only 4 26-mile round trips to the Homey Depot to complete a minor-ish plumbing job.
Got a chance (finally) to check on the remnants of the GB Compound Firing Range after last Springs floods – looks like restoration of function will be easily achievable. Eldest D-i-L wants me to start training her youngest soon.
All my students are doing quite well with their sundry lessons. (Reading, guitar, mandolin.) That’s a joy to see.
Getting some gentle rain in the AO – we’ve been under a burn ban for a while.
Got to give three of the grands a chance to ride in the back of a pickup (I had the truck in low so I don’t think we did more than 2mph from their house to mine and back.) They did good work as well.

Oh, yeah. Sweet schadenfreude has been wonderful. Thankful that God allowed Donald J. Trump and J.D. Vance to lead these wonderful United States of America for the foreseeable future. May God bless, keep, and guide them, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives to restore and protect the rights He has granted us. Now it is also up to us to advise all of the above, our governors and state representatives of whatever form or fashion they take on our desires. Including but not limited to dismantling all the DEI and socialist nonsense, prosecuting to the full extent of the law all those who have sought to destroy this country and our freedoms, and revealing/prosecuting all those on Epstein’s list.

God bless and keep you all.

KoB

From your lips to His Ears, Testify Brother Graybeard!

Fyrfighter

Sadly, Commierado went farther left.. Need to work harder on my exit plan, but we’re currently experiencing a “historic” snowstorm, so that’s taking priority.. been snowing since monday, about 18 inches or so, and could get as much as 10 more by morning.. of course it started as soon as I got a roll off to start cleaning up from the last hailstorm and try to get house ready to sell.. This has been a hell of a year.. At least the Presidential election was one ray of sunshine in an otherwise overcast year..

Graybeard

I’m sorry, Fyr. I was hoping the folks there would wise up and clean up.
Hope you can sell the house quickly and get yourself to someplace sane.
Blizzards there, floods in the Texas panhandle, chance of tornadoes in central Texas, and a hurricane in the gulf. You’d think Mother Nature listened to The View.

Fyrfighter

Yeah, it’s snowing like a MOFO right now, got another 8 inches overnight. roughly two feet so far..

And thanks GB hoping to be living “way down south in the land of cotton” within a year.. we’ll see..

Odie

If you’re getting the gentle rain we got this past Saturday afternoon/ Sunday morning, looks like 6 to 10 inches are coming your way. It was gentle, but steady.

And riding in the back of open pickups is a memory that will stay with them for a long time.

Amateur Historian

Over in Colorado Springs we’ve been snowed in for the past 3 days. Lost half a week of school as a result. 😕

Fyrfighter

Damn AH, didn’t realize we were neighbors! I’m a bit north and east of you. Sitting on the Monument divide, with all the snow that comes with it.. lol

Fyrfighter

Holler some time if ya wanna grab a cup of coffee or a beer

Amateur Historian

Jeez, I thought you were in the mountains. Yeah, sure. Though my car has been broken down for the better part of a month and my alloted time is about to get busier: I have an impromptu job interview to get to. Wish me luck!

Fyrfighter

Best of luck brother!

Admins, please feel free to share my contact info with AH

Amateur Historian

Well, I just got done with the interview. That was the shortest interview of my life, so I hope I get the job.

Fyrfighter

Here’s hoping! I need to find something better / more permanent than what I’m doing we well. Haven’t been having much luck so far, think I may need to expand my search a bit..

Amateur Historian

Just don’t do what I did. My last job was in Pueblo and I had to commute from North Springs. I did that for a little over 2 years. That wore out my car. Now my wheels are a very big, expensive, heavy paperweight (I can’t even lift the damn thing for that purpose 😉).

Fyrfighter

Yeah, trying to find something close, unless it’s going back to a 48/96 schedule

Oof, I think my cousin might’ve been put on that schedule too. He’s a fire fighter too, somewhere in the Denver Metro area.

Fyrfighter

Too cool. we’ll have to catch up, would be funny if I know him.. On a related note, me and my boy are headed to Parry’s Pizza on Interquest if ya got nothing better to do. Probably be sitting at the bar, I got a R.E.D shirt on..

Claw

Official reporting of 24.5 inches of snow in Monument.

I remember my early days (mid to late 70’s) at Carson when we took the track pads off our APC’s and went out to Peyton and Falcon and other points east to rescue folks. /s/

Fyrfighter

Yep, they’ve been doing similar. We’ve got at least that here. Waiting for it to stop, gonna grab some lunch, and then probably get to the snowblower..

Fyrfighter

Of course the snowblower ends up having some tire issues. Got it repaired, but not in the mood to work into the dark tonight, so just hoping it doesn’t freeze too solid over night..

KoB

Don’t need no steenkin’ snowblowers down heah in the Heart of God’s Country. And there’s plenty of work in just about any career field you can name.

Welcome South, Brother!

Soon as I can get the house ready to sell. Wife has already been blowing me up with houses she likes.. Been throwing out job apps down that way as well, just no luck so far..

They finally called Nevada for the President Elect and Arizona is a lock, even if they haven’t called it. At 315 EC votes it isn’t even close, some of the races were close but it was a blow out with the popular vote 75.3M to 70.3M or about 7%. At 7% This is even higher than the normal DJT poll aberration of 4-5% undercount that the polls commonly give him.

Since it was all Biden’s fault that the election was lost they should run Harris again without voting for her in the primary again in 2028 and see how that goes.

Hack Stone

FEMA refers to “them”. When Hack Stone was in High School, them indicated more than one person.

Saw the Rosie O’Donnell meltdown video. Besides her thinking that doing away with the racist Electoral College would have prevented Donald Trump from winning, she wants us to reach out to the Kamala Harris supporters having trouble coping the loss, which is all of them, and provide them the mental support they need before they are shipped off and executed at the concentration camps. So, with that being said, has anyone spoken to Lars?

Fyrfighter

I’d be happy to help, and offer each and every one of them a big steaming cup of Shut the Fuck Up!

Gotta say, my 401k loves the Trump bounce.

It’s doing so good, you had to say it twice.

Since the holiday season is fast approaching, and there seems to be a support group for everything….

I don’t know about y’all, but I enjoyed some exquisite Schadenfreude with my morning coffee while I watched videos of liberals having meltdowns about DJT’s reelection, someone needs to make a clip of them going batshit while “Ride of the Valkyries” is playing!!! 😀😁😀😀

There is a ballot processing battle going on in Orange County, CA, normally a predominantly R area. Last night or in the wee hours this morning, there was purportedly a bomb threat. Supposedly everyone had to clear the site (sheriff says a crime scene). But some poll workers remained and then the white vans arrived. The D-rat steal with fraudulent mail in ballots is in full swing, to preclude Trump from having a Republican controlled House of Representatives. RIP Brother, you’ve wandered too long.

Thanks for posting Commissar

Hack Stone

Hack Stone is asking for the Deplorable Garbage to take a moment to remember those in your thoughts and prayers who have lost their homes, automobiles and life savings. Not due to natural disasters but being idiotic enough to agree to running a career suicide operation to save Phil Monkress’ reputation from his false claims of being a US Navy SEAL. Karen is so upset with Psul right now that she is making him sleep outside of the Jaguar as it is illegally parked overnight in the Wheaton Mall Parking Lot.

Hack Stone

Kamala still wants money from Hack. Is that so she can send another million dollars to Oprah Winfrey? Shit, if Kamala Harris have Hack Stone a million dollars to ask her some softball questions, he would endorse her too. How much did Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift get for their endorsements?

They probably got quite a bit, ya gotta work hard to blow a BILLION dollars in 107 days.. That’s 9.345 million a day..

If you’re a fan of Matrix, of Allegory of the Cave/Hotdog (I added that last part. I have my reasons),

Anyone hear from or see Lars lately?
