French navy fights off pirates
Sporkmaster reminded me of this story the other day in which the French Navy actually closed with and captured some Somali pirates;
The crew of La Somme, a 160-metre (525-foot) command vessel and fuel tanker, easily saw off the brazen night-time assault by lightly armed fighters on two lightweight skiffs and captured five pirates, a spokesman said.
“The pirates, who because of the darkness took the French ship for a commercial vessel, were on board two vessels and opened fire with Kalashnikovs,” Admiral Christophe Prazuck said in Paris.
I’m glad to see the French finally overcoming their notorious image of being “cheese-eating surrender monkeys” (as described by famous military historian, Homer Simpson) and I’ll do anything I can to promote this new image – as long as they keep it up.

And how sad is it that the French are starting to show us up on this front?

After attacking the flag command ship with “commandos” on board? Was it dinner time?
I worked with the French forces in Europe and never found them lacking from military sprit. Their leaders are another story however.
The French have a Navy? I have to say this surprises me. Did they beat the Somalis to death with their white flags?
The stupid Somalis chose a military vessel. The Smart Somalis chose a “French” military vessel, that captured 1/2 of them, the unarmed ones. The captured boat had no weapons, no food, no water. Now that they have been captured, will the French feed, clothe and house them according to Somali standards? Or will they be treated like Gitmo prisoners, with new prayer rugs, Qur’ans, and actual food?
Sounds like the Somalis wanted to get 3 hots and a cot.
