American White Ibis. (Bing Images)

The American White Ibis. Sanibel Island attracts many of these birds. They use their beaks to detect crayfish and other critters via vibrations. Just dip and detect the vibrations, adjust “peck,” then meal is served. Enjoy your weekend.

Tanks!, ninja. It is good to be back on the Throne. Poor ol’ (Grand) Pappy…ie MustangCPT, of The Engineers, the winner of last week’s competition must have been too busy with that new grandson he has that he didn’t have time to properly square things away after all the trashing that Hack Stone had done over the last few weeks. “Navy Seal Who Was Shot 27 Times In Iraq Then Walked Himself To Medvac Helicopter Dies 16 Years After Heroic Feat – ‘Hero’ Killed Two Enemy Fighters After They Sprayed Him With Bullets”

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11921769/US-Navy-Seal-shot-27-times-walked-safety-dies-16-years-heroic-feat.html

“A United States Navy SEAL who survived being shot 27 times during deployment in Iraq – and then walked himself to a medevac helicopter – died on Monday after dedicating his post-military career to helping veterans.”

“Douglas ‘Mike’ Day died on Monday, 16 years after he cheated death in the famous 2007 shootout he documented in his memoir Perfectly Wounded.”

“Day had been leading a raid on a house in Fallujah, when he encountered four terrorists who opened fire on him as he breached a door. His body armor caught 11 of those bullets, while the 16 pierced his body and caused him to drop his rifle.”

“Undeterred, Day pulled out his handgun and managed to kill his attackers. Despite the extent of his wounds he continued to direct the raid, saving an Iraqi family before walking out of the house to seek treatment.”

“After being discharged from the hospital he returned to duty, finally leaving the Navy in 2010 after 21 years of service. He went on to represent Wounded Warriors, and spent the rest of his life advocating for veterans. It remains unclear how he died.”

“After spending 16 days in the hospital, where he lost 55 pounds, Day was discharged and awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars during his career.”

Thanks for posting this, Ninja. I recall reading about this shortly after Day was wounded and was utterly astounded that someone(never mind a USN SEAL) could get shot twenty seven times and then – unassisted – casually strolls to a waiting Medevac. According to one article I read: Day recalled “I wasn’t being macho, but I was afraid if they picked me up, it would just hurt more.” Thank God such men lived.. RIP Warrior, you’ve well earned your rest. *slow*salute*

The King of Battle returns to the throne! In his honor, I offer this week’s trivia – with the annual April Fool’s game. See if you can figure out which three I made up.

DID YOU KNOW…?
Game time again! Find the three made up items in this year’s April Fool’s Column!
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com

Saturday is April 1, 2023.

And you know what that means, right?

It’s time for the annual “April Fool’s Day” column!

Contained within this week’s trivia column are three items which are totally and completely made up, from start to finish. Your job is to figure out which of these are the fake ones.

There are no prizes offered, of course, because I am a rather chintzy individual who studied miserly behavior at the feet of the great Jack Benny. What you do win if you guess all three, however, is the knowledge that even I can’t fool you.

Want to see if you’re right? Drop me a line at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com and tell me which three you think are totally made up. I’ll let you know how many (if any) you get right. And check this space next week for the answers. No cheating by using the Internet to look them up, either, please.

The game’s afoot, Watson!

Commissioner Wretched

… one of the most iconic quotes from history did not happen the way most people think it did? On April 13, 1970, as Apollo 13 was headed toward the Moon, an explosion ripped through the craft’s Service Module, crippling the ship and causing some serious concern if the astronauts would get back alive. Back in Mission Control in Houston, the call from the ship came, and most people think the quote was, “Houston, we’ve got a problem.” That’s not the line. Spoken at first by Command Module pilot Jack Swigert (1931-1982), the actual quote is, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” Asked for clarification, Mission Commander James A. Lovell (born 1928) replied with the same words. (Tom Hanks said it better than Jim Lovell did in the movie.)

… a platypus hunts for its food in the dark and quiet? The odd animal closes its eyes, ears and nose while hunting for food. (So how does the little guy find his food?)

… two classic situation comedies of the 1960s were connected? Just about everyone knows Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch. But you may not know that there is a direct connection between the two shows – the characters of The Professor and Carol Brady. According to the creator of both series, Sherwood Schwartz (1916-2011), before the voyage of the SS Minnow which led to the Gilligan’s Island series, the Professor, Roy Hinkley (played by Russell Johnson, 1924-2014), was married to the woman who would be Carol Brady (played by Florence Henderson, 1934-2016), and the “three very lovely girls” – Marcia, Jan and Cindy – were his daughters. After Hinkley was “lost” at sea, Carol moved from Hawaii to Los Angeles, met Mike Brady, and the rest – as they say – is history. (“Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale … of a man named Brady …”)

ninja

Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch.

What you mentioned was captured in the 1996 movie “A Very Brady Sequel”:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Very_Brady_Sequel

“In Hawaii, Carol escapes from Trevor’s clutches, and manages to find her way to Dr. Whitehead’s estate before Trevor gets there. It turns out, Trevor was responsible for the boating accident that led to the disappearance of Dr. Whitehead’s son Gilligan and Carol’s first husband, a professor. In Dr. Whitehead’s words, “The Minnow is lost”, and he refuses to pay Trevor for the horse.”

16424.jpeg
Commissioner Wretched

But … does it count? This was one of the reboot movies, with a different cast and story line. Does it count with the continuity of the ’60s series? I leave that up to you … until next week, anyway.

… the CEO of Walmart makes more in an hour than some of the company’s employees earn in a year? (I was going to say the CEO “earns” it but I still haven’t figured out how a CEO earns that kind of money.)

… a hoax led people to smoke banana peels? In March of 1967, an article published in the Berkeley Barb newspaper, copied in August of that year in the New York Times Magazine, supposedly described an extract of banana peels which could be used to get “high.” Called “bananadine,” the phony pharmaceutical was supposedly on a par with marijuana and could produce a rather euphoric feeling. The article was a complete joke, but after it was published reports began coming in from all over the country of people trying to smoke banana peels. (That’s just bananas.)

… the earliest written description of cancer was made in 1600 BC? Found on a piece of papyrus, the writing describes what appears to be breast cancer. The unknown author ultimately wrote, “There is no treatment.”

… scorpions really can’t hold their liquor? A small amount of booze placed upon a scorpion will cause it to go mad and sting itself to death. (I guess that means one of my uncles was a scorpion?)

… the head of a major corporation played a last game of tag with his brother before he died? Richard B. Mellon (1858-1933), who for a time was president of the Aluminum Company of America, or Alcoa, and his investment banker brother Andrew (1855-1937) had kept a rather spirited game of tag going for seven decades or so. On his deathbed, Richard called Andrew over, tapped him on the arm, and said, “Last tag.” Richard then died. Andrew was “it” for the next four years, until his own death. (That’s a long time to be “it.”)

Commissioner Wretched

… a character name in the Star Wars saga comes from Russian? The name of the beloved Wookiee character Chewbacca is derived from the Russian word собака, which means “dog.” The Russian word is pronounced “sobaka.” (You call Chewie a dog. I won’t.)

… only one river on Earth flows north? The Willamette River in Oregon is the only river on the planet whose waters flow its entire distance in a northern direction.

… crosshairs in U.S. Army firearms during World War II came from an unusual source? The crosshairs in the ‘scopes of Army weapons were made from the silk of black widow spiders. The silk was stronger than steel or platinum wires of the same thickness. (Those black widows know their business, don’t they?)

… coffee has been doing its thing for people far longer than the beverage has been around? According to some sources, before people ground the roasted coffee beans to make a steaming cup o’ Joe, they would chew on the beans for the stimulant effect. That took place for about four hundred years before the idea of brewing the drink was devised. (More beans, please! More beans!)

Now … you know!

KoB

My Man! The FIRST one jumped right out at me, the others…not so much…yet. I’ll “peel” away and “smoke” them over this weekend when I’m off the net and can get the spider webz out of my brain.

“Black Widow Spider Silk in World War I and II”

https://owlcation.com/stem/The-patriotic-black-widow-spiders-of-World-War-II

“A LIFE magazine article published on August 30th of 1943 credited each of several government employed arachnids with spinning between 100 and 180 feet of thread a week. This thread was then used to make crosshairs in the gunsights of U.S. Army instruments of war.”

“This is not the first time spider thread was employed for this purpose. Before World War II began, different species of garden spiders had threaded various precision optical devices throughout the United States. However, with the arrival of war, the black widow was used out of necessity to supplement a dwindling supply of material.

“Ironically, workers at the U.S Army Quartermaster Corps spider web production shop, where thread was collected, found black widows much easier to use than the other less poisonous but faster-moving garden varieties.”

“The Quartermaster Corps was in charge of all aspects of thread collection, including spider gathering. They did this on base at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where soldiers famously encountered high populations of black widows during outdoor training. After on-base collection, the specimens were sent to Columbus, Ohio, where they were housed in glass jars, fed two flies each week, and began systematically producing thread.”

“Thread production was a hands-on and time consuming process. It was done every two days, after the careful removal of a black widow from its glass jar. The spider was then gently placed upon a wire coat hanger that was bent to form a spindle-type structure. As the spider dangled from the hanger, continually spinning its thread, the hanger was rotated to steadily collect the growing strands.”

Absolutely fascinating stuff, no?

Arachnology, the study of spiders is a surprising hobby of thousands across the globe.
I’ve always loved spiders and had several pet spiders in my life. We used to collect flies in jars and feed them to some of the Wisconsin Wolf and Fishing Spiders that lived under the deck at the back yard swimming hole.
Lately I ran across this gentleman from across the pond that has a thriving collection of a huge assortment of spiders of all kinds. He does several videos a week on YouTube and goes by the name of “Dave’s Little Beasties” the interesting logo has the look of said beasties, but also the rear end of a 1959 Chevrolet.
Here’s a link to begin your viewing pleasure.
He’s really good with spiders and most of his assortment are of the Tarantula genus.
Here he is on the Japanese Funnel Web Project he has going.
They’re the dangerous ones.
Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ8mbYFKcFE&t=634s

Another New Ribbon For Army Soldiers, E1 to O10!

Not A Joke!

“Army Unveils Ribbon For Soldiers Who Refer A Friend”

https://www.armytimes.com/off-duty/military-culture/2023/03/27/new-army-ribbon-rewards-soldiers-for-referring-a-friend/

“The Army has ribbons for just about everything. And now, that extensive list of awards includes a recently unveiled ribbon given to eligible soldiers who refer a friend for a life of embracing the suck.”

“Those who participate in the Soldier Referral Program can qualify for the new ribbon as long as the referred individual attends Basic Combat Training.”

“The Soldier Referral Program produced approximately 5,300 referrals since it started nearly two months ago,” Brian McGovern, the deputy director of public affairs for U.S. Army Recruiting Command, said in a statement. “To date, the Army witnessed success as it contracted over 76 new recruits since the start of this program and we expect solid growth as the command continues to build on the momentum to accomplish the mission.”

“The nation’s oldest branch has invested in a series of different tactics to bolster its recruiting numbers after a fiscal year in which the Army missed its active-duty recruiting goal by 15,000 troops.”

“This program continues to provide soldiers the opportunity to personally invest in their Army by referring high quality individuals to serve,” McGovern said.”

“Heroism Medal Awarded To Last Survivor Of 1955 Cold War Military Rescue On St. Lawrence Island”

https://www.stripes.com/veterans/2023-03-30/heroism-medal-awarded-survivor-1955-cold-war-rescue-9654380.html

“In June 1955, at the height of summer on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, Alaska National Guard Pvt. Bruce Boolowon of the 1st Scouts, just 20 years old, had to stop egg hunting. He heard the unhealthy whine of a distressed plane engine pass overhead. A few minutes later, he saw a big plume of smoke rising from the other side of the hill near his village of Gambell.”

“We have to do something,’” Boolowon remembers thinking. “’We have to try to save them.’ And we did.”

“Now 87, Boolowon is the only surviving member of a 16-person search-and-rescue party that responded to the shootdown, crash and explosion of a U.S. Navy plane. The rescuers hurried to the wreck site in umiaks, small hunting boats hulled in walrus hides, and transported the injured crew of 11 back to town, all while the Soviet MiG fighter jets that sprayed the aircraft with unprovoked bullets circled overhead.”

“Not one man of the 11 died,” said Adjutant Gen. Torrence Saxe at a ceremony in Gambell on Tuesday to award the Alaska Heroism Medal, one of the state’s highest honors, to Boolowon and surviving family members of the others who kept them alive.”

“All 16 of those men who responded were absolute heroes,” Saxe said.”

“The Alaska Heroism Medal is given to members of the Alaska National Guard who demonstrate true heroism or “exceptionally meritorious service beyond the call of duty,” according to the Guard.”

Military History Lesson Of The Week.

HOO-AAHH!!

“How A Russian Prince Became a US Paratrooper and Liberated Sardinia in World War II”

https://www.military.com/history/how-russian-prince-became-us-paratrooper-and-liberated-sardinia-world-war-ii.html

“When LTC Serge Obolensky left the U.S. military after World War II, his transition was like many other Americans leaving the service after the war. He started his postwar career with a job working for Hilton Hotels before starting his own company. His prewar life was very much not like anyone else’s.”

“Obolensky was born Prince Sergei Platonovich Obolensky Neledinsky-Meletzky, an Oxford-educated Russian aristocrat who would be close to England’s future Edward VIII. His first wife was the daughter of the assassinated Russian Tsar Alexander II, and his prior military experience was as a cavalry officer — a Russian cavalry officer.”

“He just wasn’t your average paratrooper. By September 1943, he would be an American citizen, making his first combat jump ever. At age 53, he almost single-handedly liberated the island of Sardinia for the United States, his adopted home.”

“When the U.S. entered World War II, Obolensky was well beyond military age at 51, but old soldiers never die; he immediately volunteered for the Army. The U.S. Army didn’t need old cavalry officers, though. Obolensky was still a wealthy aristocrat with connections. He jockeyed to join the New York State Guard and was accepted as a private, but was still far from the front lines.”

“Obolensky and three other OSS commandos airdropped into Sardinia in early September 1943, carrying letters from Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Italian Gen. Giuseppe Castellano informing the Sardinian garrison of the armistice. It was Obolensky’s sixth-ever jump and his first combat jump.”

Do You All Remember These Two TAH Posts where we discovered that JR Majewski stated on his Facebook that his Uncle Rick was a Navy SEAL who served in Vietnam?

https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=131078

https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=131305

He Uncle’s name was Richard Vearl Jones.

He passed away in April 1994.

We received Richard Vearl Jones’ FOIA this week.

We will not post the FOIA since we are not Admin.

However, we will provide information that was sent to us by NARA.

The records were difficult to read and a bit confusing.

The NARA Tech stated Richard Vearl Jones was “Army” and gave us a strange “Serial Number”.

His Rank was also listed as E5.

The records we received covered the period 15 February 1983 to 27 September 1989 and 28 September 1989 to 30 September 1992.

The FOIA listed these dates as service for Jones, but did not include any information: 7 December 1965 to 1 October 1969.

His Duty Status was listed as “Released from TEMACDU”.

His place of Separation was Maryland.

Interesting updates.
Good job.

Here we thought Uncle Rick (Dick Jones?)
was a Fat Phony Navy SEAL recruiter
for all those 80s years,
when in fact,
he was in the Navy Reserves,
training, working, and preparing for the Battle of Lake Erie.

He turned Fat Phony Navy SEAL recruiter
just in time to pick up a vaunted 2nd NDSM.

Sadly,
for a Vietnam Veteran with a Bronze Star,
who chose to poop all over his honorable service,
this certainly didn’t end well for Uncle Rick.

Worse,

MarineDad61

ninja,
You’re welcome.

I prevented a few here in PA from making it that far.
It not only never ends,
but the past 3 years have picked up, gotten worse.

1 previous, is about to become the

Pennsylvania Department of VFW.
(His official VFW page bio no longer says
“Combat Veteran of Iraq”,
after I whipped up a small storm 2 years ago.)

NOTE – Thank you to VG for the assist on the above.

2 currently underway,
including 1 bully with a big mouth,
who still hasn’t given up his political aspirations
or quest for power and popularity
(based solely on his bio full o’ bullshit).

Possible 3rd….

QUESTION for ADMINS…
Is a guy running for County Commissioner,
who has varying bios out there
stating that he was a
“US Naval Communications Officer”,
enough to get an FOIA on his actual service,
if he ever served at all?

I ask,
because folks in his county are asking him,
he dodges the questions in person,
and blocks those who ask on social media.
These are not things
a legit former Navy officer would do.

The nastier stuff hit Mississippi and ‘Bama, a number of casualties there. Blowed down some limbs and took out some fiber cables here. Made a bigger debris pile to burn than the one I had just put a match to.

My prayer will be that you only see Showers of Blessings.

We had warnings of “special weather event” featuring high winds, hail, possible tornados. Got an hour of 30mph wind and 1/4″ rain.

Commissioner Wretched

I was telling OAM about the tornado that hit near me Sunday morning, taking out part of the Wild Animal Safari and letting a couple of tigers escape for an hour or so. I work there as a weekend tour guide.

Commissioner Wretched

Stay safe, my lady. We had similar weather here in the Southeast last weekend … you may have heard about the escaped tigers from the Wild Animal Safari, where I work as a weekend tour guide.
Side note … I grew up in Chicago and am well familiar with prairie-type storms. Rode out the 1967 northern Illinois tornadoes that clobbered Oak Park and Belvidere, and we could hear the storms from our neighborhood.

Better get busy, Graybeard. Them Shiners ain’t a gonna open themselves.

Graybeard

Sadly, drank the last Shiner in stock yesterday.
Next round of “heart medicine” is various (cheep) wines.

With congestive heart failure an issue in my ancestral bloodlines, I take a little every day to do whatever it may do to help keep me playing with the grandkids.

KoB

Gots to take care of yourself, Brother. Them Grandbabies ain’t gonna spoil themselves…That’s YOUR job.

This week’s “Now I Feel REALLY OLD” segment.

Toni Basil is 79 years old.

Toni was 37 when her 1 hit “Mickey” shot to the top in 1981.
We knew then she wasn’t cheerleader age.
But she had the moves, as seen here.
MILF before we called it MILF.
Years of joking that
she made herself look better for this video
by surrounding herself with “chunky cheerleaders”.

Where are all these chunky cheerleaders today?
Enjoy the time travel.

Sapper3307

Femail cheerleader’s, the good old days.

Toni Basil played a prostitute in the classic movie “Easy Rider” and will turn 80 in September.

Karen Black (who played the other prostitute), Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Phil Spector, Robert Walker and Dan Haggerty from “Easy Rider” are all deceased.

Jack Nicholson is still alive.

“chunky cheerleaders”

Hell, that’s just good old fashion T&A. 😏

And just when you thought spring was here, Mother Nature goes, “Surprise, bitches!”

Oh, and wind turbines suck, but they still pay the bills. Joy.

26Limabeans

Speaking of wind turbines, ISO New England’s nuke output has
suddenly dropped by 33%. The Hydro portion has been ramped up. Something going on? Wait and see.

NHSparky

IIRC, Seabrook has a refueling outage starting today, which would account for that.

Ole Brandon Boy can go to Ireland, but not our Borders…

“Biden Defiant Over Northern Ireland Trip After ‘Severe’ Terrorism Alert: ‘Can’t Keep Me Out’

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-defiant-northern-ireland-trip-severe-terrorism-alert-cant-keep-me-out

“A rise in nationalist militancy in Northern Ireland prompted the U.K. government to increase the threat of a terrorist attack to “severe” this week — but President Biden said Tuesday that won’t sideline his upcoming trip.”

“They can’t keep me out,” he told reporters ahead of this visit to the U.K. to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement signed April 10, 1998.”

Checking in from Merrifield Virginia, as to posting from the corporate world headquarters of a proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the Federal Government is blocked by the Admins.

26Limabeans

Hack is lima charlie in northern Maine where even the beer is cold despite global warming.

Hack Stone

Hack was donating another pint of his precious blood to a worthy recipient in the National Capital Region. Things got a lot dicey when the question about having sec with another male. Hack had to confirm that fucking with the Vice President of a proud but humble women owned business that sells software to the Federal Government would not disqualify him. And got a high quality 100% for the effort.

If you donate platelets, it counts double missing mailbox door, but when they pump the leftovers back in you get the thunderbird at 0300 incoherent rantings effect. 😜

The Judge is U.S. District Judge Thomas Lee Robinson Parker, born 1963, a member of the Republican Party, appointed by President Trump in 2018.

Don’t know if he has children.

“Tennessee Ban On Drag Shows In front of children temporarily blocked by judge

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/tennessee-ban-drag-shows-children-temporarily-blocked-judge

“The Memphis, Tennessee, judge sided with Friends of George’s, a Memphis-based LGBTQ+ theater group that filed a lawsuit against the state.”

“At this point, the court finds that the statute is likely both vague and overly-broad,” U.S. District Judge Thomas Parker said in the ruling.”

“Parker, who former President Donald Trump appointed, said the state had not justified with a compelling interest the restrictions it intended to impose.”

Meanwhile in New York, if you disarm the assailant who just shot you and shoot him with his firearm, New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg will charge you.

If you someone attacks you and you survive, i think you get charged with assault on the presumption you “took the law into your own hands” and fought back there.
