Hack Stone

Magic 8-Ball, can the hardest working Director of Media Relations for a proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the Federal Government catch a break and score the highly coveted and rarely awarded First Comment for This Ain’t Hell Weekend Open Thread? Magic 8-Ball says…

ChipNASA

NO Hack has the FIRST…
I bow and drop the Scepter and Orb.
Rule on Hackness.

Roh-Dog

That software from a woman owned business seems to give Hack an unfair advantage.

Can we have Hack tested for performance enhancing substances?

Well played to the Stoned Hacker. Less than 5 seconds between the FIRST to the (have one on me) FIFTH contestant. Good to see that there is some competition back in the game. I really do need to quit giving that 10 count that I give…just to make it sporting. Good to see that you quit paying so much attention to Elaine and have downloaded your Y4K software that automatically blocks any of the legit deploreables from playing.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone had to be driving around the NCR in order to post, since the IP of the corporate headquarters of the proud but humble woman owned business seems to be blocked from posting. Hack was passing by the Pentagon when the thread dropped.

Hack would also like to remind everyone that a very special Vice President of a proud but humble woman owned business will be turning 67 next Saturday, March 18. His birthday registry is at the Bethesda Goodwill Thrift Shop. Please be generous.

Knowing I’d never be the coveted FIRST this week, I opted to hang back and post some trivia. Enjoy!

DID YOU KNOW…?
Did prisoners of war once hold the commander of their camp as their own prisoner?
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com

Spring is in the air!

Of course, I know it hasn’t arrived yet, and won’t for another couple of weeks. But have you noticed … it’s getting a bit warmer, the days are getting a bit longer, and things are getting a bit greener?

Or is it just me?

Whatever the case, the winter is soon to be behind us, and that means only one thing … spring. I hope you have a great one!

And if you haven’t already grabbed a copy, don’t forget – Did You Know…? Yet Another Compendium of Useless Trivia is still available on amazon.com and I’d be so grateful if you glom on to one.

Now, for the trivia of the week, read on!

Commissioner Wretched

Did you know …

… toothpaste is a lot older than most people think it is? Ancient Egypt had a form of toothpaste. Historians suggest that the oldest-known recipe for toothpaste comes from about the year 4 AD, when Egyptians used crushed rock salt, mint, dried flowers and pepper to make an abrasive powder for use on teeth. (I’ll give you three guesses on what the mint was for … and your first two don’t count.)

… cryovolcanoes exist? Not too different from regular volcanoes, cryovolcanoes have one unique feature – they only spew ice, not lava. Unsurprisingly, you don’t find cryovolcanoes on Earth. They are found on icy moons like Europa, around Jupiter, and Enceladus, circling Saturn. (Which would make old Vulcan the god of fire and ice, wouldn’t it?)

… the law in Arkansas makes it illegal to buy or sell blue light bulbs? (Glad K-Mart never had to worry about that.)

Commissioner Wretched

… a beloved children’s book was banned in one city in Poland? The city of Tuszyn, Poland, banned the classic Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne (1882-1956) because the illustrated depiction of Pooh shows him not wearing pants. (Wonder how the town feels about Donald Duck, then?)

… watering down beer once carried a death sentence? Under the Code of Hammurabi (1810 BC-1750 BC), sixth Amorite king of the old Babylonian Empire, watering down beer was a capital crime. (Talk about being strict!)

… the world’s record for largest coffee cup was set in 2019? In June of that year, the Mayor’s office in the city of Chinchiná, Colombia, created a coffee cup that will hold about 6,000 gallons of the brew. The cup was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest coffee cup in the world. (Six thousand gallons of coffee … sounds about right for my average Monday morning.)

Hack Stone

Can we get that Code of Hammurabi reinstated. That swill known as Coors Light is a crime against humanity. And as Hack likes to say, if you have to worry about calories, you’ve got no business drinking beer.

MustangCPT

I second that. Life is too short to drink shitty beer, so it should be shortened if you do.

A Proud Infidel®™

Some say that Coors® Light™ was once almost called “Sex in a Canoe” because it’s next to fucking water!

SFC D

Fucking next to water…

Graybeard

Colorado has been infected with CaliForncate-itis and it shows up in the beer.

Commissioner Wretched

… prisoners of war once held the commander of their camp hostage? In the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, North Korean prisoners of war were being held in a United Nations camp commanded by U.S. Army Brigadier General Francis T. Dodd (1899-1973). On May 7, 1952, Dodd visited one of the compounds in the camp to listen to complaints by the prisoners. But when the gate opened to allow a work detail through, Dodd and one of his subordinates were grabbed by the prisoners. The subordinate got away, but the general was taken to the center of the camp and held hostage by the prisoners for 78 hours. He was finally released after negotiators gave in to a demand from the prisoners that the U.N. admit responsibility for bloodshed in the camps. Dodd was heavily criticized for handing the North Koreans a propaganda victory and an Army review board removed him from command and reduced him in rank to colonel. He was forced to retire the following year. Additional trivia note: Dodd was not even informed that the review board was meeting. He was thus not allowed to present any evidence on his behalf, and was even denied a copy of the review board’s report since the material was classified as Top Secret.

… U.S. currency lasts a while? Coins, for example, can last in circulation up to 30 years. But paper currency has different rates: a one-dollar bill lasts about 18 months; the five-dollar bill, two years; the ten-dollar bill, four years; and fifty- and hundred-dollar bills last about nine years. (But those two-dollar bills last forever!)

Hate_me

I still have a $2 bill in my wallet that I first received in 1997. It’s survived thunderstorms, sweat, and far too many drunken tumbles into water to count… only about half of it’s left, but it’s still there and identifiable (it’s outlasted a few wallets).

Commissioner Wretched

… a French nobleman’s wife became a pirate after his death? Jeanne de Clisson (1300-1359) was the wife of a nobleman, Olivier IV de Clisson (1300-1343), who was beheaded for treason. Jeanne was more than a little unhappy about that, and she sold the family lands and used the funds to purchase three warships. For the next thirteen years, Jeanne’s pirate fleet waged war against the ships of King Philip VI (1293-1350) and when she captured any French noblemen, she personally would behead them with an axe. Her practice was to leave one person on each ship alive, just to spread the tale. (Remind me to stay on her good side.)

… movies about space get a lot wrong? Sure, they’re supposed to be entertainment above all, but think on this: space is a vacuum. In films depicting space battle sequences such as the Star Wars series, the laser beams would not be visible, nor would the explosions be heard. (Yeah, but who wants to watch that in a theatre?)

… the population of the world is expected to double by 2080? Estimates say that our current 8 billion people will have become more than 16 billion by that year – assuming, of course, that something awful doesn’t happen. (Which is not to say that doubling our population itself isn’t something awful.)

… the highest point in North America is in Alaska? Denali, also called Mt. McKinley, stands 20,310 feet above sea level. Which is impressive, but … 38 peaks in South America are taller. (So there.)

Now … you know!

Hate_me

Honestly, I find it a very apropos and chilling effect when space shows get the sound correct.

For example, in the Firefly episode “Our Mrs. Reynolds,” a group of scavengers loudly panic as the integrity of their vessel is compromised, followed by silence as their bodies float into the void in an exterior view.

“How White And Affluent Drivers Are Polluting The Air Breathed By L.A.’s People Of Color”

https://www.latimes.com/environment/newsletter/2023-03-09/white-drivers-are-polluting-the-air-breathed-by-l-a-s-people-of-color-boiling-point

“The article complained of the residents of ‘Whiter, more affluent neighborhoods’ spreading pollution in ‘Black and Latino neighborhoods'”

“LA Times writer Sammy Roth shared a piece claiming that many suffer an environmental form of racism thanks to White and affluent commuters in the Los Angeles area.”

“Roth described a study he had read claiming that it found, “[Los Angeles residents] who drive more tend to be exposed to less air pollution — and Angelenos who drive less tend to be exposed to more pollution.” He went on to say, “It’s a function of the racism that shaped this city and its suburbs, and continues to influence our daily lives — and a stark reminder of the need for climate solutions that benefit everyone.”

“He later added, “the map shows how residents of whiter, wealthier communities disproportionately drive to work through lower-income Latino and Black neighborhoods, spewing pollution. Residents of those neighborhoods can’t do much about it.”

“Solutions he suggested range from “ending the sale of most gasoline vehicles” to allowing more apartment construction in wealthier neighborhoods.”

“The study itself is titled, “Local Inequities in the Relative Production of and Exposure to Vehicular Air Pollution in Los Angeles.” The study’s abstract defines its findings in explicitly racial terms.”

Lies. Everyone knows white liberals drive Tesla’s.

poetrooper

Based on a long lifetime of frequent exposure to minority neighborhoods, may ol’ Poe suggest to that airhead reporter that he spend some time there and see in which communities he observes the most pollution-spewing automobile exhausts.

It won’t even be close… 🙄

UpNorth

Most of the vehicles in “communities of color” spend most of their automotive life idling in a driveway, at the curb or even in a traffic lane.
That said, the wealthy who still drive to work go out of their way to go around communities of color, rather than get car-jacked.

“Biden Gives ‘Black American Of Courage’ Award To Robert Downey Jr. For Role In ‘Tropic Thunder'”

https://babylonbee.com/news/biden-gives-black-american-of-courage-award-to-robert-downey-jr-for-role-in-tropic-thunder

“During a prestigious ceremony held at the White House, President Biden bestowed the “Black American of Courage” award to actor Robert Downey Jr. for his pivotal role as a black man in the 2008 movie Tropic Thunder.”

“Awarding the white actor a black award equitably follows in the footsteps of First Lady Jill Biden, who recently gave the International Woman of Courage Award to a fat guy from Argentina squashed into a dress and caked with makeup to show young women around the world to never give up on their dreams of being crushed into oblivion and wiped from the history books.”

“If you’re not as black as Robert Downey, Jr., then you ain’t black,” said the President while standing next to Mr. Jr. who had insisted the award go to someone else while glancing nervously at all of the black people in the room.”

“Biden added that choosing a recipient had been difficult, as contenders for the prestigious award included Jimmy Kimmel, Justin Trudeau, Corn Pop, and Dr. Rachel Levine who had qualified by getting a spray tan that one time.”

“At publishing time, President Biden had replaced Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin with Robert Downey Jr. on the grounds that Austin was just not black enough for his diverse cabinet.”

“Biden Again Claims ‘MAGA Republicans’ Called For ‘Defunding The Police”

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-again-claims-maga-republicans-called-defunding-police

“President Budrn on Thursday blasted “MAGA Republicans,” asserting that they want to defund the police and the FBI, flipping the GOP’s continual claims that the Democrats were the anti-police party.”

“MAGA Republicans are calling for defunding the police department and defunding the FBI now,” Biden said during an event at the Finishing Trades Institute in Philadelphia. “That’s a good one. I like that.”

15215.jpeg

Trying to explain to Biden why the FBI aren’t police would be like trying to explain to Biden why he isn’t Puerto Rican, black, intelligent, Jewish, Ukrainian or Vice President.

Give a moment’s thought that the federal government allows FBI agents to fly armed. Agents who’ve never made an arrest. Meanwhile, you, having been in close quarters fights with methheads cannot.

“Jane Fonda Suggests ‘Murder’ To Fight Abortion Laws In Wild Appearance On ‘The View'”

https://www.foxnews.com/media/jane-fonda-suggests-murder-fight-abortion-laws-wild-appearance-the-view

“Hollywood icon and far-left activist Jane Fonda suggested abortion-seeking women shouldn’t abide by laws and could even resort to “murder” in order to have control of their bodies on Friday during a wild appearance on “The View.”

“Behar then asked the 85-year-old Fonda what can be done aside from “marching” and protesting the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court.”

“Well, I’ve thought of murder,” Fonda said during cross-talk before her “Grace and Frankie” co-star Lily Tomlin asked her to repeat herself.”

“Murder,” Fonda said again as the reliably liberal panel burst into laughter.”

“She’s just kidding,” Behar said hastily, before motioning. “Wait a second… They’ll pick up on that and just run with it. She’s just kidding.”

“Fonda then gave Behar a long stare that created even more laughter, making it unclear whether Fonda was still joking. Hostin then segued awkwardly to discussing Fonda’s activism.”

“Fonda has long been an outspoken advocate for the far-left, and many veterans of the Vietnam War still refer to her as “Hanoi Jane,” recalling Fonda’s disastrous trip to North Vietnam in 1972 when she was photographed on an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down American pilots. The actress has long since apologized for the incident.”

Agreed. I’ve always utterly abhorred her movie Barbarella and any other movie she’s ever been in and have always regarded her as a utterly obnoxious cunt that rose to some brand of Hollywood status via her Daddy’s coat-tails… Still do. I have no doubt that when she dies, her first vision of the Spirit world will be several thousand dead US soldiers – quietly – accusingly – pointing at her, waiting for her to dignify all of her worldly deeds and words. Her fast-track to Hell? In a million years of trying, she’ll never be able to dignify any of those self-centred deeds and words to any the honoured fallen.. To that end; may Hanoi Jane’s final eternal reward be to slowly rot and burn in Hell for..forever.

Actor & US Army vet, Robert Blake, dies at age 89. Most remembered for the 1970s crime series Baretta. His big break in Hollywood was appearing in the 1959 war movie about the Korean War “Pork Chop Hill’. Blake’s drama off screen overshadowed his Hollywood career.

Today I found medals certificates (x4) posted on Twitter,

One is incorrect. You can’t get two awards for the same actions. The dates are the same. Probably the top one was issued in error due to the use of the Hollywood call sign unit name instead of the official name of the Company and replaced with the bottom one. Just a guess though.

An AAM is a very low level award. The soldier would have to add it at the Brigade S1 to get it added to his official records.
