Weekend Open Thread

| July 1, 2022

All these folks threatening to not move to states with anti-abortion laws, or those like the woman depicted in the above meme, demanding that a certain group of people not listen to their music…. For many conservatives, the first time they hear or see these individuals is when they become memes, or when someone on social media says something about them. Enjoy your weekend.

Rats of the Cong, Roh!

KoB

It is with great pleasure I turn over the Trappings of FIRST on the Coveted EARNED NEVER AWARDED TAH Weekend Open Thread to My (GO) ARMY Brother Roh-Dog. Glad you was paying attention and snagged the Victory, beating any and all with a relationship to (BEAT) Navy, Chair Farce, or those that command the 26 leaden soldiers. My Escort Duty has been successfully completed, provision run to the K Roger (including time spent with management on Higher’s Policy of exclusion of Patriot Related Items), and all of my charges are safely back within the wire of their individual bunkers or Firebase Magnolia. Combat Arms Doods RULE!

Now, pass me over one of them Frosty Lites from Mr. Miller’s yeast vat while I whip up a batch of cheese grits and catheads.

Roh-Dog

The Modelo bottles were 8% more than Lite cans so Household 6 made the executive decision and we took 3 cases of babies home. (she was paying so I’m not complaining)

Hot, hot heat, hot food, cold Mexican beer… Is there anything gooderer?

Jambalaya is on: with I-tie sausage (I like it better than andouille), scrimps, fresh peppers, fresh green beans (don’t judge, its good), and a, one, singular thai pepper for zing.

It’s a bowlcouch meal. One bowl and the itis makes that couch call yo’ name.

Graybeard

No shame in fresh green beans, Roh. My poor garden has managed to make about 3 messes of green beans for Mrs. GB and I. She cooks ’em with bacon & onions, of course.

Roh-Dog

That means she cares… the bacon of course.

I hope you and yours have a fantastic 4th!
May Uncle Sam Claus brings you the finest of fireworks! (if thats your bag).

David

Wife measures her bean picks this year in gallons… between green beans and wax beans, we need storage space! Currently cooking purple peas with ham hocks, and she hasn’t started on the corn, cucumbers to pickle, and has a bunch more of the peas to shell. If we didn’t have that East Texas drought we ‘d be set for the year.

Graybeard

Yum Yum!

Second?

Commissioner Wretched

Missed the coveted FIRST to Roh-Dog, to whom I extend Rats of the Cong! Since I missed out, let’s have some trivia, then. The week’s drop is incoming!

DID YOU KNOW…?
What is the name of the little dog in the RCA Victor™ “His Master’s Voice” trademark?

In just a few days, the United States celebrates another birthday!

That’s right. On July 4, the country will be 246 years old. Still a baby when you compare it with England, or China, or any country that’s been around a long, long time.

And yet, with all its faults (and there are many), the good ol’ USA is still the best place on Earth. (Probably off Earth too, for all I know.)

Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, many things have come and gone … most of them trivial. That’s why they still exist in columns like this one.

Enjoy this week’s trivia, won’t you?

Commissioner Wretched

Did you know …

… money makes people happier, but only up to a point? A study conducted at Princeton University showed that making more money led to happier people – up to an income of $75,000 a year. Beyond that, having more money did not make much difference. (Just let me have a crack at that “happiness.” I’ll prove ‘em wrong!)

… NASA was once fined for littering? In 1979, America’s first space station, Skylab, fell out of orbit and re-entered the atmosphere. Most of the station burned up due to friction, but some small pieces survived long enough to impact the ground. Some of the debris struck near the town of Esperance, Western Australia. The town sent a $400 fine notification to NASA for “littering.” (Serves them right.)

… the Milky Way galaxy is huge? How big, you ask? Well, let’s put it into perspective. If our Solar System were the size of a quarter, the Milky Way would be the size of the continental United States. (Enough said.)

Commissioner Wretched

… according to statistics, there are at least six people in the world who look exactly like you? And you have a 9% chance of meeting one of them. (I feel so very sorry for the six or so who look like me!)

… chess is a mandatory part of the elementary school curriculum in Armenia? Children begin learning the game at the age of six. (Logical.  Simply logical.)

… no part of Japan is more than one hundred miles from the sea? (That’s what living on islands can do for you.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the little dog in the RCA Victor™ trademark has a name? You’ve seen it – a little dog sitting there, staring at an old-fashioned Victrola record player, with the slogan, “His Master’s Voice.” That little dog has a name. It’s Nipper. The image and slogan come from an 1898 painting by Francis Barraud (1856-1924), also titled “His Master’s Voice.” The image has been used as a trademark since 1899, first by the Gramophone Company, then later by RCA. The dog used in the painting, also named Nipper (1884-1895), was a mongrel who was part terrier.

Commissioner Wretched

Additional trivia note: The painting was originally done with the dog listening to an Edison wax cylinder recording. But when Barraud offered it to the Edison company, its manager said, “Dogs don’t listen to phonographs,” and turned it down. Barraud then offered it to the Gramophone Company, and after he replaced the wax cylinder with a flat-record gramophone, an advertising icon was born. RCA recently added a puppy named Chipper to the modern ads using the slogan. (But they still have a gramophone, so there’s that.)

Commissioner Wretched

… public intoxication is not a criminal offense in Nevada? In fact, state law does not allow any city to make public intoxication a criminal offense. (I wonder why…?)

… washing your hands in hot water does not kill more germs than cold water? It’s the action of the soap that kills germs. If the water was hot enough to affect the germs, it would also scald your skin. (It would do a number on the germs, though.)

… an estimated 70,000 thoughts hit the mind of the average person every day? (And most of those thoughts aren’t worth … a thought.)

Commissioner Wretched

… one of the first machine guns was invented by a doctor? Richard Jordan Gatling (1818-1903), who earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Ohio Medical College in 1850, noticed that during the first year of the American Civil War, more soldiers were killed by disease than by gunfire. Gatling felt that if he could invent a gun which could fire a lot of bullets during a short period of time, soldiers would be able to do their duty and eventually it would lead to smaller armies. He developed one of the first machine guns, the hand-cranked Gatling gun, in 1862. (This ranks right up there with the dentist who invented the electric chair, doesn’t it?)

Commissioner Wretched

… sarcasm can boost creativity? Studies have shown that if you have a mastery of sarcasm, you have a higher level of creativity in other areas. But that’s not all – judicious use of sarcasm boosts creativity in those who receive the barbs as well. Why, you wonder? If you use, or listen to, sarcasm, you have to also make connections between opposing ideas and your brain has to reason beyond the literal meaning of the words. (Sure, like I need your advice!)

… the roar of the lions heard in the movie The Lion King did not come from lions? Lion roars were deemed not loud enough, so Disney officials used recorded tiger roars instead. (So why not just make it The Tiger King?)

RGR 4-78

You Shere Khan come up with some good ones.

David

Well played.

All these folks wanting to leave the US – don’t let the border hit ya in the ass. Oh – and stay gone. Folks who make a big political point of renouncing their citizenships should incur lifelong travel bans as part of the package.

The oort cloud comet mentioned below will pass about as close to us as Mars does. Galactically close, but literally millions of miles away.

Commissioner Wretched

… women have wider peripheral vision than men do? (Now I know how my mother caught all my childhood misbehaviors!)

… the most poisonous jellyfish in the sea is also the smallest? The sea wasp is about half an inch long, but its venom is more poisonous than any other jellyfish venom known to man. (Size isn’t everything, you know.)

Now … you know!

Along with that little shit from the group Green Day who says that he’s going to renounce his US Citizenship. I say go ahead and move to North Korea, but i think he’ll live up to his promise as much as the shithead celebrities who promised to leave the USA if Donald Trump got elected.

To “never listen to [Pink’s] music again” I’d have to have listened to it in the past. I’ll just stick to “never listen to Pink’s music” at all.

If we can get all the bugs at bay, Mrs. GB, 3 grandsons and I will be going out of the wire for a few to help build/repair some churches in LA.

Rain in the general AO, but not on the Compound yet. You know it’s dry when Texans are praying for a Tropical Storm to visit.

So, when it is the bureaucrats being threatened, they get serious.

What about all those people who were burned out during the riots, how are the investigations going that will find and prosecute the arsonists?

Anonymous

So, the gov’t monitors our social media and knows where we live, but it’s so routine they have a secretary generate and bulk-mail an unsigned warning letter almost a month later. Couldn’t the G-man just show up (with written notice, of course) and tell ’em to stop faster and more impressively?

Yeah, for anyone paying attention, they are such clowns.
We need to display these in our school classrooms. and explain to the kiddos how “experts” are frequently liars.

A Proud Infidel®™

Pepperidge Farms and I remember that. One such memory is from the early to mid-70’s when “Experts” were predicting a Man-Made Ice Age coming due to particulates from fossil fuel emissions blotting out sunlight. Hey, it’s the year 2022 and NO such Ice Age yet, just like the predictions from the mid-1980’s that half of mankind would be dead along with at least half of the species of animals gone extinct, along with farmland being turned to deserts by climate change and deforestation by the year 2000!

rgr769

I once wrote a college paper, citing the predictions of such “experts.” I also cited several articles on “peak oil” in my paper. That was back in 1975. Most predicted we were doomed by 2000. Who knew they could all be so wrong.

Charles

Dear C- W-

I have been informed, by sources believed to be reliable, that the original “His Master’s Voice” consisted of the recording playing while a dog listened… on … a coffin.

Hence the tag line “His Master’s Voice.”

But since marketing decided that preserving your voice for your dog after your death wasn’t exactly a high dollar prospect, the image was cropped to simply a shiny tabletop.

Commissioner Wretched

Interesting … and if true, definitely needs to be added to the item when I put it in the second edition of my trivia book. Thanks!

More voter fraud. It’s everywhere. Well, allegations of it, anyway:

https://www.npr.org/2022/07/02/1109442956/these-candidates-lost-badly-but-now-are-claiming-fraud

Kandiss Taylor, who touts herself as the only candidate to stand up to the ‘Luciferian Cabal’ and will bring the ‘Satanic Regime’ to its knees… got 3.4% of the Republican primary vote for governor. And won’t concede. Because it was all rigged apparently. (Kemp, who won, got over 73%. That’s a lot of rigging!)

Here’s another story about Bobby Piton, in Illinois, who far exceeded her with a whopping 9% of the vote, also refusing to concede:

https://www.newsweek.com/republican-senate-candidate-gets-9-percent-vote-refuses-concede-1720850

LC

And, on a different note, apparently some idiots in the Oregon Health Authority decided that talking to the people there as scheduled would’ve been bad because ‘urgency is a white supremacy value’:

https://reason.com/2022/07/02/urgency-is-a-white-supremacy-value-oregon-health-authority/

I’d say this is fucking nuts, but that sounds defensive.. which, apparently, is also god damn white supremacy. God damn, people are ridiculous.

Fyrfighter

I hate to ask the obvious LC, but which party is running that state /n authority?

Ohh, and I’m sure I’ll catch heat due tot he source, but the info is accurate.. No way to ever know, but it sure seems to tie in with the discussion we had earlier about people switching registration / crossing party lines to screw up primaries..

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2022/07/another-raffensperger-special-emerald-robinson-mark-zuckerbergs-political-operatives-unbelievable-victory-colorado-gop-secretary-state-primary/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=the-gateway-pundit&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=2022-07-02

LC

Oh, I certainly think the people who’d shriek about ‘white supremacy’ over absolutely anything are definitely more aligned with the Democrats than Republicans. No question. It’s one of the problems I have with the D’s – their embrace of absurdity.

As for your link, I… don’t know why you say the info is accurate? I’d love to see the polling, for example, showing Peters up by twenty points. I can’t find that anywhere. What I can point you towards is the Colorado Republican Chairwoman calling on Peters to suspend her campaign following her indictment [1], and a judge removing her from overseeing the 2022 elections [2].

What do you think is more likely? A sleeper candidate somehow secretly rigged in a Republican-run primary, while simultaneously apparently underfunded but also ‘Zuckerberg-affiliated’, which implies money. Or, alternatively, Republicans are up against a popular, well-funded Democratic SOS and decided to go with someone who is not under criminal indictment?

LC

Happy to give you links to the above if you want; the filter doesn’t allow long comments these days, so I couldn’t include them.

LC

I forgot to add – the article you linked also laughs at the notion that Mike O’Donnell ‘somehow’ got 28% of the vote, mocking his almost zero funding, low Twitter engagement, etc. But it conveniently leaves out that at the same Colorado Republican Assembly they talk about, he got 40%.

How is it inconceivable that he got 28% when he previously got 40% in the CRA?

Now, an interesting question would be how would it have gone down had it just been Peters or O’Donnell vs Anderson, vs the three-way contest.

Fyrfighter

Sorry, I rushed my comment, and was not very precise. I should have made clear that I found it interesting that Anderson is on the board for a Zuckerberg political organization. I agree, I can’t find any polls from before the election, so I won’t argue what they said. As to the three way race, no doubt that made things more interesting, as it always does. A third person often acts as a spoiler, (as Ross Perot did).. Actually, I don’t disagree with anything in your last post..

LC

I know Zuckerberg is seen as a bit of a left-wing boogeyman on the right, but the funny thing is, on the left he’s seen as a right-wing boogeyman. I’ll again call out to Occam and his lovely razor – which is more likely:

a) Anderson is a sleeper candidate who somehow didn’t hide that she was on a Zuckerberg-funded thing, and didn’t take money from him, but is still beholden to him, and somehow, despite the above, and her being a Republican for years -even before being on that board- she’s .. a plant?

b) A woman with political ambitions, her own ‘government consulting’ firm, career ambitions to higher office, etc., took a position on a board related to government / public service that would aid those ambitions, yet remains the same person she’s been for years (a registered Republican)?

To me it’s more normal than interesting, I guess. But I’m glad we’re in broad agreement, certainly, and both want fair elections, no doubt.

LC

As to the other stuff, this is the issue with how stuff is presented, and Gateway Pundit does it a lot – it sounds crazy when you read about O’Donnell getting a bunch of votes after they belittle his Twitter followers (and really, do you have Twitter? I don’t!) and his funding,… but oh-so-conveniently don’t mention that he got 40% of the vote at the CRA.

Yes, I’m annoyed when CNN or someone does it too, but honestly, it’s far less blatant there. I think you’ll disagree with that, but surely we can agree that in this case, GP is presenting a very skewed view of things, albeit one which, on first read, does get the blood flowing in rage, right? That’s kind of the point, I think.

The Stranger

I made some smoked wings on the grill yesterday and today. Brined them in water, Apple juice, salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder, red pepper, cayenne, and paprika. Smoked them in my Weber with Apple wood chunks. Yesterday’s batch was delicious. I kept the remainder in the brine overnight and smoked them this morning. Added about a cup of Apple juice to the water pan and they came out even better. Juicier, more tender, and I think that the steam from the juice helped develop a nice glaze on the skin. Had yesterday’s wings with some cold, Yuengling, great combination!
