VIDEO: Man Tries Stealing Gun At Concealed-Carry Class, Gets Shot A Lot

Sandy Malone
Las Vegas, NV – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) released surveillance video that showed what happened after a man tried to steal a gun from a bag in a concealed-carry class at a gun range in February (video below).

The incident occurred at about 12:50 p.m. on Feb. 3 at The Range 702 indoor shooting range located in the 6000-block of Dean Martin Drive near Russell Road, KVVU reported.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Captain Jamie Prosser said the suspect entered the gun range and started touching things that didn’t belong to him.

Security video from inside the range’s classroom showed 27-year-old Marvon Payton Jr. entered the classroom during a break and sat down, KLAS reported.

Then the video showed Payton started digging through another student’s bag.

The owner of the bag saw what was happening and intervened, according to LVMPD.

Suspect shot to death by police in Dreyfoos school incident was a Dreyfoos graduate

John Bisognano and Antigone Barton, Palm Beach Post
The man who was shot to death by West Palm Beach police Friday after he crashed a van into the Dreyfoos School of the Arts theater has been identified as a Dreyfoos graduate who in 2007 received an award in recognition of his work with the school’s theater.

Romen Phelps, 33, of Palm Beach Gardens, was identified Friday night as the driver of the van, who was shot dead in the theater when he “violently attacked” an off-duty city police officer who had responded to the scene, police said.

Students were on campus at the time of the incident, which occurred about noon and caused a lockdown and panic among students and parents. Students were not in the main theater hall where the shooting happened, according to West Palm Beach police. Police said no students or faculty were injured during the incident.

When Pa was at home the gun always lay across those two wooden hooks above the door. … The gun was always loaded, and always above the door so that Pa could get it quickly and easily, any time he needed a gun. — Laura Ingalls Wilder

Robbing folks at a range, and in a concealed-carry class?  Clearly, young Marvon didn’t think this through.  However, he’s now a strong contender for a 2022 Darwin Award.

The video is worth watching. It shows what happens when you stab a police officer with a screwdriver within pistol range of three armed pistol instructors and the injured officer’s partner. Needless to say, there was no way for the perp to survive about four to six shots from each of the four people shooting him at about five to ten yards away. But I do feel sorry for the guy that owned the car that the perp was backed up against when he was shot; that car must have taken at least six or more shots through its grill.

Actually, it was a white pickup.

Darwin does indeed, grin. Not only poor victim selection skilz, but also poor victim location skilz. Add that to taking a screwdriver to a gun fight and ending up getting screwed.

Mr. Phelps ended his theatrical career with a bang. His award was issued by Darwin also.

That Liberator was a good assasination piece. Most apropos since you’re killing us with all the Glocks and fugliness of late. Guess I’ll have to eye bleach by gazing lovingly at my FNIB Kimber 1911 Model Custom LW. Built as HMS JMB (HBHN) intended.

Not too much hanging on hooks over doorways, but there is something in corners and/or within reach in every.damn.room. You never need a weapon until you REALLY NEED a weapon.

Mission Accomplished! Secure from General Quarters.

Add that to taking a screwdriver to a gun fight and ending up getting screwed.

More like “got drilled” and/or “got plugged” IMO (or maybe both). But that’s just me.

Now, not to be contrary, but I do know of a case in my hometown where a guy walking home from work was accosted by someone with a gun. The prospective victim was an auto mechanic who happened to be carrying a screwdriver in his jacket which he used to successfully defend himself and put the erstwhile robber in the morgue. I love a story with a happy ending! I know it usually doesn’t work out for the guy without a gun, but sometimes the good guys win.

Reminds me of the punchline of a Jr. High joke:
“I don’t know. I’ve been nailed and I’ve been screwed, but I’ve never been drilled.”

Glad this wasn’t Mission Impossible Phelps.

Mrs. GB concerning the LV perp: “He tried to screw her?”
And got screwed.

Eldest Son kept a 22 rifle above his door. One night Eldest Granddaughter came in: “There’s a possum in my chickens!” Reached the rifle, went out (in the cold and wet), lay on her back to get a shot under the hen house, and took the possum out with one shot to the head.
Eldest Son didn’t even know she could reach it.

Not worried about ‘varmints’ bothering her.

A gun SOOOOOO fugly (HOW FUGLY IS IT?) that it almost seems cute.
And it has history, too.
Makes me wonder, if there were parallel situations (world at war, and “we” were trying to arm “the resistance” with something cheap and single shot) how “low” could we go in this day and age? What would it look like? What would be it’s features and operation? And how cheap would it be?

Ask the folks at Hi-Point or Phoenix Cobra. (smile)

(Apparently Cobra went belly-up in 2020.)

The idea was to use non-gun manufacturing capacity so as to preserve the gunmaking for military arms.

The “Liberator” could be stamped out in a toy maker’s stamping shop.

And the idea was that a resistance fighter could use the concealed Liberator to kill a German soldier and then take his more effective weapon. Only costing a few dollars to make, they are now worth over a $1000 to gun and militaria collectors.
