Weekend Open Thread

| May 13, 2022

Apparently, the James Franco “First Time” meme is no longer consistent with Facebook’s acceptable post concept. It communicates violence, and it might indicate suicide intentions. Enjoy your weekend!

Some of Kong’s Rats to you my Brother Roh-Dog. Way to GO ARMY, bringing the Coveted EARNED NEVER AWARDED TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread FIRST back into the fold by BEAT(ing) Navy (well their red {hat} headed software using step child Marines). Ya may want to call in the disaster clean up crew from Serve Pro and disinfect the Throne. That is NOT Brown Crayon markings that Hack Stone left on it. I toast you with a very frosty adult beverage and offer up a serving of homemade chilli, with real potato cheese fries, along with some grilled Conekuh Hickory Smoked Snaursages packed inside a hot, buttered, catheaded biscuit.

And Chippy? The only way we gonna be swapping spit is if Our Beloved Only Army Mom gives you a little smoochie AFTER she gives me a kiss. Thanks for the heads up, I’m still on the “Week of Action” pro Abortion protests to begin on Mother’s Day thread about 6 days ago in the reading. Commissioner Wretched

Oh, wow … I wasn’t even first with First! I was sixth. So how about some trivia instead?

DID YOU KNOW…?
Did a beloved actor hate the nickname by which he was best known?
By Jack Bagley
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com

A few weeks ago I told you that the hardest part of writing this column was coming up with the wisecracks for the items.

I may have to walk that back a bit. You see, I’m having a very difficult time creating an opening for this week’s column.

At first I wanted to craft an old joke I heard on the radio, but there wasn’t any good way to make it work in this space, so I gave up on that.

Then I thought about trying to compose a funny poem, but I am no poet. Trust me, I’m not.

So here I sit, early on a Thursday morning, racking my brain for something to write in the introduction.

Oh, the heck with it. Let’s just get to the trivia … I’ll do something better next week.

Did you know …

Commissioner Wretched

… what you get if you cross a Chihuahua and a dachshund? You get a “chiweenie.” (No, I’m not kidding.)

… a term exists for words which mean different things depending on capitalization? For instance, Turkey is a country, while turkey is a bird. Such words are called capitonyms. (Well, they have to be called something, don’t they?)

… elephants sing to each other? You’ve never heard it, though, because elephant songs are in a frequency that is too low for humans to hear. (Bet it sounds nice, though!)

… the world’s deepest hole is in Russia? The Kola Superdeep Borehole is 7.6 miles deep – and only nine inches wide. The hole would have been deeper, but at the region of crust where the hole stopped, the temperature was an unexpectedly hot 356º Fahrenheit. That made the rock behave more like a plastic, and drilling became impossible. (I hope they keep that thing covered, in case of stray pedestrians or something.)

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

No need to worry about any pedestrian tripping over the borehole. It’s WAAAAAAY up north (where the huskies go…..) near the Russia/Norway border, up near/at the Arctic Circle. And it’s been capped off/welded over.

Commissioner Wretched

… an actor studied another actor to prepare for a film role? When cast as a serial killer in the 2000 film American Psycho, actor Christian Bale (born 1974) studied the mannerisms of another thespian to prepare for the role. His “mannerism mentor?” Actor Tom Cruise (born 1962). (Cue the “method actor” jokes here.)

… orange is probably the worst color to wear to a job interview? According to a survey by Career Builder, 25% of respondents said orange comes across as the most unprofessional color one could wear. If you’re wondering, the best color you can wear to a job interview is blue. (Of course, if the unemployed lifestyle is your preference, orange would be the best color to wear. I’m just saying.)

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

SO why was Christian Bale studying Tome Cruise? To know what NOT to do?

How DARE YOU! Thumb Cruise is the greatest aviation-type actor OF ALL TIMEZ!

RGR 4-78

You’re getting into some risky business now.

Hack Stone

He may be Losing It.

KoB

Shot out!

A Proud Infidel®™

IMHO Thumb Cruise is nothing compared to Topper Harley:

Hot Shots! – YouTube

Commissioner Wretched

… a beloved actor who was known by his nickname actually hated being called that? James Stewart (1908-1997) is a revered figure in American acting circles. His down-home, “aw shucks” demeanor made him a favorite among movie and television audiences for decades, no matter what role he was playing. And to one and all, he was known as “Jimmy.” But Stewart was said to have hated being called that. Stewart, an intensely private man, found it to be too familiar, especially with people he did not know. As one co-star said, “You don’t get to know (Stewart). He gets to know you.” His friends called him “Jim” or “James.” Additional trivia note: Whatever you call him, add the word “hero.” Stewart was a front-line bomber pilot during World War II, and retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve in the grade of brigadier general. He was later promoted to major general on the retired list.

Commissioner Wretched

… you or someone you know may suffer from abibliophobia? That’s the fear of running out of something to read. (A fear you will never have, as long as I’m writing this column. You’ve been warned.)

… the saying, “Knock on wood,” has an ancient origin? Ancient pagan cultures such as the Celts believed that spirits lived in trees. To rouse the spirits for protection in battle, the warriors would knock on the tree trunks. This gave rise to the saying, “Knock on wood,” as a wish for luck. (I generally tap on my forehead when I say, “Knock on wood.” It gets a laugh.)

… moons can have moons? A body orbiting a planet is called a satellite, or moon. If that moon also has bodies orbiting it, they’re called moonmoons. (Rightright.)

Commissioner Wretched

… authors get their ideas in some odd ways? For instance, Agatha Christie (1890-1976), the writer who gave us such wonderful detective characters as Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, was said to have gotten the inspiration for several of her plot lines while sitting in her bathtub, eating apples. (Hey, whatever works …)

… beer is one of the oldest recorded recipes in the world? One still-used recipe for beer goes back to 5000 BC. (Cheers!)

… you may have an item in your home that is rufous? In fact, you probably do. Don’t worry, though, it’s not illegal, immoral or fattening. It’s just red. Rufous is the term for a particular reddish-brown shade of color, and the word comes from the Latin rufus, which simply means, “red.”

Hack Stone

Robert Hazard wrote Girls Just Want To Have Fun while taking a bath. Cyndi Lauper punched it up a bit and turned it into one of the biggest songs of the 1980’s.

David

Believe it was Kingsley Amis who said he put a bowl of milk out on his porch, and in the morning the bowl would be full of story ideas. Then thee was Robert Bloch (“Psycho”) who said he got his because he “had the heart of a little boy… pickled in a jar on his desk.”

Commissioner Wretched

… a fruit exists that tastes like chocolate pudding? Native to Central and South America, the black sapote is a dark green fruit that turns brown and soft when ripe. It’s a species of persimmon, and its fruit tastes like chocolate or custard.  (Need to see this in Jell-O™ pops!)

… the word “burrito” actually means “little donkey” in Spanish? The popular Spanish food is so named because it can carry almost anything, just like a little donkey can. (I knew there was a good reason!)

… the collective term for a group of lizards is a “lounge”? (I wouldn’t touch that line with a forklift.)

Now … you know!

26Limabeans

Spanish fly?

KoB

Another, muchly appreciated, fine job on the trivia, CW. Tanks!

Not bad for being 34th in the WOT comments. Not bad at all.

AW1Ed

Baby formula. Really? PINO Joe would fuck up a one car funeral.

Graybeard

When my late lamented father-in-law was an infant, about 1902, his mother went dry.
They fed him mare’s milk – it has an adequate amount of milkfat for a human child. Cow’s milk does not – even raw.

I’ve seen folks advocating goat’s milk as a substitute. Donkey milk is also drinkable – although I remember the flavor as something one had to adapt to. (Mexico, circa 1965)

LC

Out of genuine curiosity, why do you feel this is Joe’s fault? Don’t get me wrong, he’s definitely pretty useless,… but wasn’t the shutdown at one of the main plants due to a contamination issue? Surely you’re not advocating that the government should assume production of private goods, right? 😉

Maybe you’re arguing, and not completely unfairly, that a mere two deaths of babies from contamination doesn’t warrant the plant still being shut down, but I don’t know. Or perhaps that the FDA policy on imports should be relaxed, which I agree with, and actually is being done by the Biden administration. But to fault him for that policy is pretty tough since it’s been in place for ages. You can argue he should’ve moved faster, though.

SFC D

Except those two deaths weren’t due to formula contaminated in the factory. It was contaminated in the home.

https://twitchy.com/gregp-3534/2022/05/13/abbott-torches-jen-psaki-in-an-11-tweet-thread-after-she-allegedly-falsely-accused-the-company-of-killing-two-infants/

LC

I wasn’t aware of that, so thanks – and to be clear, I wasn’t being sarcastic when saying that maybe two deaths don’t warrant the plant shut down. I mean, deaths and unsanitary manufacturing is bad, but so is malnutrition for untold numbers of babies because of no supply.

With that said, it’s pretty clear the situation is a bit complex. It seems likely given the strain differences that the deaths weren’t tied to this plant, but the fact the plant has had multiple inspections pointing out problems in its safety standards is probably an issue, no? Including other strains of that bacteria. I tend to trust an FDA inspector more than a company spokesperson or a politician, so here’s the actual report:

https://www.fda.gov/media/157073/download

Again, not sure how this is Joe Biden’s fault, though, other than those scenarios where he should’ve responded sooner, perhaps.

Devtun

Present.
Good news for KoB: Hope you didn’t round-file your infil/exfil plans for my garden. To my surprise, the corn stalks turned and are still putting on ears. Walking through the garden I have to really watch my step – part of the stalks are on the ground, then turn up over the next row so that they look like they were planted there.
Most of the corn is well over 6′ now and tasseling well. Having to treat for cornworms, so that attempt to get ahead of their lifecycle failed.
Zucchini coming on strong. And tasting good, too!

Mrs. GB’s follow-up with her knee surgeon went well. A few at-home strengthening exercises and she’s free to do whatever she wants. (And I usually just let her do whatever she wants anyway – as long as she wants to heal. 😀 )

Returning to semi-normal activity in the GB Compound.
God bless you all!

KoB

Outstanding news GB, ‘specially on Mrs GB’s on going rapid recovery progress. Been doing Overwatch, escort, PT, and Maid in Service for Lady Friend that had complete replacement on left knee. a month ago. The struggle has been for shore realz.

Thanks for the intel on the corn patch. Scout Platoon of the FIRST (ht2 R-D) Racoon Ranger Raider Regiment has reported from the Overwatch pos that the tasseling was ongoing, flanking and frontal assault troops are moving into their jump off positions, the beef beasts and mesquite wood are aging nicely, and the grills are seasoned. Butter Battery tubes are preloaded and set. We hear them ears a’callin’. We are a GO…C-Day in 21+-. Warning Orders issued to the FIRST (ht2 R-D) PIR (Porcine Infiltration Regiment) for follow up on C-Day +2.

Ya teasin’ me with them Zookeenies. They’d went real nice with them Conekuh Snaursages I grilled today.

Roh-Dog

I heard rumor the cure for worms of the corn was mineral oil? Any truth to this or have I been hornswoggled?

I’m rooting for the Very Fine Folks at Camp GB. May He pour the blessings ample upon you and yours!

Graybeard

I picked up a spray that I put on the tassels of the ears to keep the corn worms out – rated for use up to the day of harvest. I prefer to not do that, but it keeps them down.
I’ve not tried mineral oil – I would think that the oil would keep the pollen out of the tassels so they wouldn’t make, but I don’t know for sure.

KoB

These folks say it works. I vagually remember seeing Papa use an eyedropper to put a dab on the tassels as a lad. It worked then.

Graybeard

Thanks for the intel brother.
Gonna have to try that one out!

Actor Fred Ward has died at age 79. He played Gus Grissom in the 1983 film ‘The Right Stuff’. He appeared in other notable roles including ‘Escape from Alcatraz’, ‘Tremors’, and many others in career that spanned over 40 years. Fred was a veteran having served 3 years in the U.S. Air Force.
Fred Ward, acclaimed film and television actor, has died at 79 – CBS News

Hondo

RIP, Mr. Ward.

Three trivia notes about the movie “The Right Stuff”.

1. Levon Helm played the role of Jack Ridley – the USAF officer and engineer who assisted Chuck Yeager in various test scenes during the film. Yes, the same Levon Helm who was the drummer and often lead vocalist for The Band – he was also a fine actor.

2. The scene where Yeager asks Ridley, “Got any Beeman’s?” before Yeager’s ill-fated Dec 1963 NF-104A flight is fictional, as is the post-crash scene featuring Ridley. In reality, Jack Ridley had died in a C-47 crash in Japan in March 1957.

3. Yeager makes a cameo appearance in “The Right Stuff”. He’s the bartender Fred at Pancho’s.

Fred Ward was also excellent as Remo Williams.

The movie Remo Williams was based on The Destroyer series of pulp novels by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir (and I have more than 100 of them, they’re fun reading). It should’ve been a hit movie and spawned its own series of sequels, in my opinion. Loved it and every time I re-read one of the Destroyer novels, I see Ward as Remo.

RIP, Remo … Gus … and so many other notable characters.

Any advice for a military retiree coming up on Medicare age and needing to sign up for same? I understand the Part A and Part B portion (I think). Is it possible to still have my prescriptions filled at a military medical facility once on Medicare? This will be a strange transition for me, having had the military take care of my medical needs since I graduated from high school, which would have been the last time I saw a civilian doctor. I’m still working full time and want to do so for as long as possible, I really do not care to retire. On a different note, should I trade in my Yamaha FZ-07 for a KTM Duke 890? I want to go max hooligan before I croak.

David

You may not always be near a VA. Get parts A and B, then get a supplemental plan. One of the few times I recommend an insurance broker; a good one will check your meds and physical issues and recommend a good plan to address them.

Hondo

Maybe, maybe not.

Under TRICARE for Life, you’re still eligible for TRICARE’s prescription by mail service and/or having in-formulary prescriptions filled at a local military medical facility. And on their website, TRICARE says this regarding Medicare Part D for those eligible for TRICARE for Life:

. . . . For most TRICARE beneficiaries, there is almost NO advantage to enrolling in a Medicare prescription drug plan. . . .

They also say to compare carefully before making your choice, should you decide to sign up for Medicare Part D, and that if you have a limited income Part D might be beneficial (limited income may make you eligible for additional cost breaks if you are enrolled in Part D).

I’m guessing the folks at TRICARE know what they’re talking about here. Compare carefully before making any choice.
