Navy SEAL Candidate Dies During “Hell Week”

| February 7, 2022

Kyle Mullen

The Navy has recently identified the U.S. Navy SEAL candidate that died during “Hell Week.” His name is Kyle Mullen from New Jersey.

He went to Yale and played college football before joining the Navy.  It is being reported by the New York Post that Mullen died during an underwater exercise while attending BUD/S.  The Post uses the word “killed” but others claim it should be “died” vs. “killed.”

I’m sure information will come out later to complete the facts.

Navy SEAL candidate killed during ‘Hell Week’ ID’d as 24-year-old NJ man

A Navy SEAL candidate who died during “Hell Week” training over the weekend was identified Sunday as 24-year-old Kyle Mullen of Manalapan, NJ.

Mullen died during an underwater demolition class near San Diego, Calif., on Friday. Another candidate for the elite military squad was hospitalized during the training exercise, according to a report by USA Today.

“Great athlete but a better person,” said Ed Guerreri, the football coach at Manalapan High School, where Mullen played, to the outlet.

“Everybody loved him,” Guerreri said. “Probably one of the best kids I ever had. Great, great kid on the field but even better off the field.”

The coach said his players will now wear a No. 44 patch — Mullen’s old number — on their uniforms at the Monmouth County school.

Mullen went on to play at Yale University, where he was selected second-team All-Ivy League as a defensive lineman, and for Monmouth University, USA Today said.

We always enjoy the New York Post, but cringed when we read the headlines of the article posted in the post:

“Navy SEAL candidate Killed During ‘Hell Week’ ID’d As 24-Year-Old NJ Man”

Kyle Mullen was NOT killed.

According to USAToday: “The two sailors were rushed to San Diego-area hospitals Friday, several hours after their Basic Underwater Demolition class successfully completed part of the first phase of the SEAL assessment and selection program. The sailors were not actively training when they reported being ill, the Navy said. Mullen died at Sharp Coronado Hospital in Coronado, and the other sailor was in stable condition at Naval Medical Center San Diego.”

We have lost another fine young man. My heart goes out to family and friends who have suffered more than I can imagine. My only hope is the family will be consoled by the fact that it wasn’t due to negligence.

Graybeard

Rest in Peace, sir.

ninja

There are already rumors/speculation that Kyle passed away from complications of a certain vaccine.

We hope that is not the case.

Rest In Peace to another Warrior. Our hearts and prayers goes out to Kyle Mullen’s Family.

We hope the other Navy SEAL Candidate recovers. Prayers goes out to him and his family as well.

Military Training can sometimes be a female dog. So Sad.

Dave Hardin

I can assure you, THAT IS NOT THE CASE. The cause is well known within the SEAL community and it has nothing to do with getting or not getting a vaccine of any kind.

Hysterics on both sides of the political fence are equally repugnant.

ninja

Dave,

I doubt very seriously that Kyle Mullen was “KILLED“.

Recommend the title of the post on TAH be changed to read that he “DIED“.

Thank You.

ninja

Thank You so much, Steve.

Yes, we completely understand that you took the headline from the New York Post. We knew that it was not your idea.

We apologize/are truly sorry that we came across as giving a harsh rebuke.

We were very disappointed with the New York Times and their verbage, not with you. You did not do anything wrong.

Thank You for the change. Are we forgiven for the misunderstanding?

ninja

Steve: 15 pushups? Well, for you, we will knock out at least 30…15 for each ninja family member…😉😎

Yep, you are so right when addressing that you quote the media. Again, we are so disappointed in the New York Post on how they titled the story.

And again, we truly hope Mullen’s team mate does recover and goes on serving our Country as a Navy SEAL.

Thank You, again, Steve.

Poetrooper

Ninja, while it undeniably true that the unfortunate young man died, it may also be grammatically and factually correct to say that he was killed, dependent on the circumstances of his death.

The reports are that his death occurred during an underwater demolitions test. If an accidental or premature detonation occurred which resulted in his death, then it is entirely correct to state that he was killed, just as we might say he was killed during a live fire exercise or a parachute jump.

Just sayin’…

Thank You, Poetrooper, for your feedback. We always appreciate your second set of eyes as well as wisdom.

The US Navy reported that both candidates were not actively training when they became ill. Both candidates were rushed to hospital several hours after they completed the Basic Underwater Demolition Class.

Hope you can see why we were confused between “killed” and “died” after we read the article.

LC

Thank You, Poetrooper, for your feedback. We always appreciate your second set of eyes as well as wisdom.

Well, second set of eyes, at least. 😉

But I actually agree with Poe on this, even absent the active training – I think the underwater demolition stuff was just the writer not understanding that’s the name of the course, but they were past Hell Week and recovering already.

That said, while ‘killed’ gives a different feel and is certainly not the best word, I think if it’s SIPE or rhabdo from the grueling pace, ‘killed’ still works. It’s just that the cause is those things, vs a training accident or person.

ninja

Thank You, LC, for your perspective as well.

Does a heart good that we can have different viewpoints on subjects, but still keep a sense of humor with one another, even with jabs. The ninja family always enjoys reading exchanges of thought between you and Poetrooper. Being serious, not sarc.

Again, what is confusing is that the USA Today article stated the Navy “reported that both candidates were not actively training when they became ill.” The article also stated both were rushed to the hospital hours after they completed the class.

Hope you can understand why we were confused about the term “killed” versus “died.”

ninja

LC and Poetrooper:

Here is the confusion.

This is what the New York Post wrote:

“Mullen died during an underwater demolition class near San Diego, Calif., on Friday. Another candidate for the elite military squad was hospitalized during the training exercise, according to a report by USA Today.”

Yet, when one reads what USA Today wrote, that is not what they said.

Very confusing. 🤔

ChipNASA

Oh come on now Dave, don’t be such a hardass (hard ass? one or two words?). Where would we be here at TAH without our Hysterics?? (hard sarc for those not getting it)
Yeah, it kinda sucks. I’m glad you put that shit to rest.
That’s the kinda stuff we don’t need here, not like we don’t have enough bitching, pissing, moaning, fussing, whining, and the like. 😀 It’s the unnecessary and unfounded bitching, pissing, moaning, fussing, and whining we don’t need.

KoB

“We hope that is not the case.” Spot on ninja. I have been semi following this since it broke late last week and have seen several articles (and a boatload of comments) to that effect. Some allusions to a possible heart condition, aggravated by the mandated vax jab. And, as alluded by other articles, the Sailor was “killed”. Sad that this tragedy has been politicized.

Godspeed and Fare Well Good Sir. May God’s Peace bring His Comfort to your Family and Friends. A swift and complete recovery is wished for your potential Team Mate.

ninja

Thank You, KoB.

We are hoping the best for his Team Mate…and again, our hearts goes out to Kyle Mullen’s Family.
