Weekend Open Thread

This meme captures what we’ve seen among those on the left. Leftists tend to react as if facts are to them what kryptonite is to Superman and sunlight is to a vampire. Enjoy your weekend.

Enough of this bickering over first post.

Had a Facebook friend make a comment about Bambi Finney, the Marine stationed in 29 Stumps who was booted for posing in Playboy 40 some years ago. Hack Stone went onto Al Gore’s Amazing Internet, and found this interesting article.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1980/03/12/another-naked-marine-who-wasnt-stripped/36c58dab-1fd0-4d04-8f34-7b67a32f7f07/?fbclid=IwAR1JgUe83vzVo9XwEDrYTRb5rwH8NvZulFv3g3wcyUwy4Xw8wH4xalCK_kM

FIRST to wish a Happy Birthday to Thomas Jonathon “Old Blue Fire” (aka Stonewall) Jackson. If Jeff Davis had of turned him loose, after FIRST Manassas, with even one (1) fresh regiment, that whole four years of unpleasantness would have been over…quickly!

ninja

Happy Belated Birthday (19 January) to Bobby Lee.

This is so sad:

ninja

“Florida Holidays Honoring Confederate Birthdays May Soon Be Erased”

In the meantime, George Floyd is being honored….

KoB

We’ve been tracking this, ninja. I gave Marse Robert a shoutout on his day in the Wednesday FGS Thread. If these wokesters are all about inclusivity and equality, then the Honoring of ALL people (Heroes) should be included and have an equal chance to be celebrated by folks that want to. Davis became a politician and it was only a very very few votes that gave him the Presidency. Racists? Nope…if he was he wouldn’t have adopted a black child and raised him as his own. Tom Jackson sent money every month in a tithe to Black Churches and Schools. Bobby Lee freed the slaves from his Father-in-Laws Estate by the terms of the will. He would have freed them sooner but under the law of the land at that time couldn’t.

It is indeed, a sad state of affairs when a drugged crazed criminal is elevated to “hero” status.

ninja

KoB:

Let us not forget that VMI removed Stonewall Jackson’s statue.

VMI. Ole Ralphie Boy KKK Coonman Northam graduated from VMI.

I think alot of Virginians got FED UP with him and the DemoRats…as demonstrated by the recent November election.

Happy Birthday, General Jackson and General Lee!

My room mate in the BOQ at IOBC was a VMI graduate. He was an arrogant asshole. Fortunately, I only had to put up with him for five weeks.

ninja

rgr769:

😆😅😂🤣😆😅😂🤣😆😅😂🤣😆😅😂🤣!!!!!!!!

KoB

Spot on ninja! I think that not only were the good people of VA fed up, the election went the way it did due to folks like the ninja family pulling provost duty to keep vote honest. The demonrats will double down in their efforts to steal in 2022. Odd, how the only places in GA that were suspect were those areas controlled by Statzi Abighams.

KoB:

We are STILL cracking up that Ole Joey Boy Biden is already implying that the upcoming 2022 elections are gonna be rigged…😆😅😂🤣

Oh, the Irony…

His March 2022 State of the Union address is gonna be interesting….Wonder if he will be whispering while giving his speech…or yelling…or fumbling…If he starts talking about getting the Vax or his deceased son one more time….😝

gabn/CONGRATS TO THE DAWGS AGAIN!!!/rtr. 😉😎

A Proud Infidel®™

I wonder if Biden won’t ramble incoherently like he’s done so many other times, anyone want in on the betting pool as to how soon he makes another gaffe?

ninja

KoB:

Yep…New York taking down Teddy Kennedy’s statue and relocating it while erecting a bust of George Floyd…

Sadly, alot of New Yorkers were against these two actions from occuring.

The Stranger

I think you mean Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Kennedy can rot in hell.

rgr769

The progs and the BLM racists would undoubtedly like to honor Floyd’s birthday as a national holiday. After all, he had such a profound life, what with being a convicted felon, home invader, gun assaulter of a pregnant woman, and confirmed drug addict, who likely killed himself with an OD of cocaine, weed, and fentanyl.

rgr769

I’m sorry; I forgot about the meth that was also found in his blood.

ninja

rgr769:

Why do we have this feeling that Floyd’s Birthday MAY indeed become a National Holiday?

*shudder*

Hopefully, before the ninja family departs from this Earth, that there will be some folks in the Higher Food chain that are NOT INSANE OR HAVE GONE MAD that will ensure George Floyd will NEVER BE HONORED.

It seems Criminals are now treated as HEROES and their Victims as VILLIANS.

We are so sick and tired and fed up with all of this!!!

Concur entirely.

The REST OF THE STORY on George Wallace:

“In the late 1970s, George Wallace announced that he was a born-again Christian and apologized to black civil rights leaders for his past actions as a segregationist. He said that while he had once sought power and glory, he realized he needed to seek love and forgiveness. In 1979, Wallace said of his stand in the schoolhouse door: “I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over.” He publicly asked for forgiveness from black Americans.”

ninja

This is interesting.

I don’t think my comments above are 1000 characters.

This new site used to have “read more” but not anymore.

What happened?

KoB

That threw me for a loop too, ninja. The read more went poof and was replaced by the dots. Hover your cursor just past the dots, the pointy finger will show up and the read more re-appears. More of TVI’s pink magic.

ninja

Thank You, KoB!!

Odie

I don’t have a cursor on my tablet, so the dots remain just dots.

ninja

Continued from above since my comment got cut off even though we are allowed 1000 characters:

“In 1979, George Wallace said of his stand in the schoolhouse door: “I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over.”

“He publicly asked for forgiveness from black Americans.”

ninja

“During George Wallace’s final term as governor (1983–1987) he appointed a record number of Black Americans to state positions, including, for the first time, two as members in the same cabinet.”

rgr769

Actually, he was an extremely rare bird: A politician who admitted his mistakes. Pretty sure Gropey Joe has never had any regrets about being a pal of Robert Byrd, a Grand Cyclops of the KKK.

rgr769

Correction: Bob was an “Exalted Cyclops.”

Graybeard

I didn’t know that – and am glad to read it.

ninja

Graybeard:

ALOT of Alabama Folks, White AND Black, EMBRACED George Wallace after he did a reversal on segregation…so much that they re-elected him Governor again from 1983-1987.

Biden used George Wallace as a weapon to try to brainwash ignorant folks. His tactic backfired.

Ole Plugs and some members of the Liberal DemoRat party are the ones who are now practicing Segregation. Vax Vs UnVax.

Blocking people from entering a business if they cannot provide proof with a document that they are vaccinated.

Ole Plugs Biden and Plastic Woman Nancy P: Two self proclaimed Catholics who have no problems with murdering the innocents…the Unborn.

George Wallace who became a Born Again Christian, who asked for forgiveness and put actions behind his words, his faith, yet years later, is still depicted as a Racist by the clueless hypocrite occupying the White House (and Delaware on the weekends).

A Proud Infidel®™

The same idiots wanting people too have to show papers just to leave one’s house are still screeching against Voter ID while their vax papers bullshit is going to hurt minorities more than anyone else.

Poor rhetorical point for a Democrat to make… for that reason.

Most Democrats today believe those guys were Republicans and Lincoln and MLk, Jr. were Democrats… even though the Republican party started to end slavery (which Democrats supported) and Democrats started the kkk to scare freed black people away from voting Republican.

LBJ said (about his motivation for the Great Society social programs) if anyone doubts Democrats were any less cynical or racist in the ’60s:

Busy day at the Daily Planet (not the actual paper where I work) and thus I congratulate ChipNASA for his coveted FIRST. Here are the crown and scepter; use them well.

I was going to post the week’s trivia column, but I see that I don’t have enough room. Help? What do I do?

Hack Stone

You can always post your trivia thread on that TAH clone in Greenland (Iceland?) that Bernasty set up.

Speaking of the Not An Honorary Chief Petty Officer, tomorrow is the 4 year anniversary of the skies being a little safer. His legacy lives on, though, through the charitable endeavors of The Daniel Bernath Foundation, which has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to worthy veterans.

The Stranger

Gonna be a busy weekend so I’ll post this here before I forget:

There once was a lawer named Dan,
Who got himself thrown in the can,
He was finally let out,
Then went flying about,
And that’s when the shit hit the fan.

The Stranger

Yep, 4 years of Dan maintaining a speed of 0 knots at -6 feet AGL. Steady as she goes, Dan. Steady as she goes.

ChipNASA

You can post as usual. I think it should post “read more…” in white at the end. I haven’t posted enough to max the characters limit but if it does, break it up into consecutive posts. it’s a learning process.
Just wait until I have to post The As(s)teroid of Insults®™ then *I’ll*be the one that’s worried.

Congrats on being FIRST, ChipNASA!

CW:

What I did was piecemeal articles I wanted to post.

I had to keep replying to myself to post my comments.

Also, it used to be that I could cut and paste a link to an article and return to my draft post to highlight some of article.

Not anymore. When I leave the site, I am giving a warning order that once I leave, that is it.

Now I have to piecemeal everything and reply to myself to post an article, creating a long thread tail.

ninja

reply to myself to post an article, creating a long thread tail.

ninja

I hope your situation gets fixed. The ninja family needs a trivia fix from you, CW.

We always look forward to your Trivia post.

ninja

We noticed when we try to post Memes that a warning sign in Red comes up..and that our Memes could not be posted…something to do with JPEG..
or possibly the size of the JPEG?

We gave up trying to post Memes.

In a way, we kinda miss the now “OLD” posting format.

Poetrooper: Did you ever get the Emoji issue resolved?

ChipNASA

I think it’s the size of things/files, particularly on mobile. I got that too yesterday and Dave commented on it. (Looking into it) Try smaller or cropped or PC or .png. or .bmp files.

Thank You, ChipNASA…Will try your recommendations.

Commissioner Wretched

Okay … here we go.

DID YOU KNOW…?
Do modern rocket launches use a “countdown” to liftoff because of a science fiction movie?
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com

The first few weeks of a new year are not unlike stepping into freshly fallen snow. You get to make the first footmarks. It’s a joy to see that clean, unmarked time ahead of you and to plan how you’re going to use it, just as the fresh snowfall has you plotting the path you’ll take to leave your footprints in it.

Of course, if you don’t have snow where you are, I don’t know what you can compare a new year with.

But why am I talking about snow, anyway? Sure, it’s January, and we’re in winter’s icy grip. It may not snow where you are, and as I write this, it certainly isn’t snowing where I am.

Commissioner Wretched

So let me stop this snow job and just get right to the trivia.

Did you know …

… a Midwestern airport features a “Recombobulation Area”? If you travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and go through security at General Mitchell International Airport, the planners have created a space where you can go put yourself together again. Travelers have said going through security there can be … discombobulating, thus the name of the Recombobulation Area. (It’s that way everywhere, of course, but thanks to Milwaukee for thinking about the poor passengers!)

Commissioner Wretched

… cowboys in the old West did not wear “cowboy” hats? The Stetson hat, which most people associate with the cowboy, didn’t become a popular piece of headgear until the end of the 19th Century. On the frontier, derby hats (or bowlers) were much more popular, but most men wore hats which were related to their employment. Some would wear flat wool caps, Mexican sombreros, or even old Civil War kepis. (And of course there was the ten-gallon hat which only held a quart or so.)

… Lincoln Logs™ were invented by the son of a famous architect? John Lloyd Wright (1892-1972), son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), created the toy interlocking wooden pieces which generations of children used for enjoyment after visiting the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Wright named the toy “Lincoln Logs” after President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), who grew up in a log cabin.

rgr769

Broad brimmed hats of all sorts of styles and shapes were worn throughout the 19th century. They were commonly referred to a “slouch hats.” In the Southwest they were particularly useful to shield the face and neck from the sun. The Jefferson hat was a high-crowned, broad brimmed U.S. Army hat with the brim pinned up on one side. They were specified in the 1855 uniform regulations for all cavalry and dragoon regiments. If you look at period photos, you will see all sorts of broad brimmed hats throughout the 1800’s on both civilians and soldiers. There are more photos and depictions of people in the West wearing broad brimmed felt hats than any other headgear. The fact that Stetson did didn’t make them is irrelevant. Also, the term “cowboy” was not commonly applied to cattlemen in 1800’s. So, I must disagree.

Commissioner Wretched

… members of the British royal family do not play Monopoly™? They have a family rule against it; seems that the game is too competitive. (Besides, it’s in the rules that the Queen always wins.)

… rocket launches use countdowns because of a science fiction film? NASA was inspired to use the backward count to zero thanks to a 1929 silent film, Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon), directed by Fritz Lang (1890-1976). Lang used the countdown for his fictional rocket launch to create suspense. Of course, unlike the movie modern launches are not a race against the clock, as the countdown is routinely paused for several reasons. What is important is the timing of a launch for a “window” of opportunity to make the spacecraft’s journey take as little time and fuel as possible.

Commissioner Wretched

… “eye of newt, toe of frog and wool of bat” actually exist? The odd chant, spoken by the witches in a scene from the play MacBeth by William Shakespeare (1564-1616), does not actually refer to body parts of exotic animals. The items are actually plants – eye of newt is mustard seed, toe of frog is buttercup, and wool of bat means holly leaves. (But it sounds so much neater to call them eye of newt, etc.)

… a shark can grow an entire new set of teeth in a week? (Never mind that … how did the shark lose the old set?)

… a museum dedicated to vampires and other such creatures exists? Found in Paris, France, the Museum of Vampires and Legendary Creatures contains items such as a vampire-killing kit, antique books, and other such macabre curiosities. (A vampire-killing kit, eh? Wonder what’s in it …)

Commissioner Wretched

… a group of kittens is called a “kindle”? (That’s the way I read it, anyway.)

… chances are that no more live-action movies will be made based on the books of Dr. Seuss? Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) wrote 60 books for children, many of which are illustrated by his own drawings. But only two have been made into live-action movies. The first was How The Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000. The movie, starring Jim Carrey (born 1962) as the titular Grinch, was well-received and even won an Academy Award™. But 2003’s The Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Myers (born 1963), bombed with the critics and fans alike. The overwhelmingly negative reaction to The Cat in the Hat caused Geisel’s widow, Audrey (1921-2018), to state that there would never be another live-action film based on her husband’s books. A planned sequel to The Cat in the Hat never got off the drawing board because of Geisel’s decision.

Commissioner Wretched

… ravens can imitate human speech? A raven’s voice is deep and similar to a man’s, and some ravens can actually be taught to speak better than parrots. In the wild, ravens mimic the calls of wolves and foxes to lead them to a carcass they want to eat but can’t open up. (And when the raven says, “Nevermore,” your hair stands on end.)

… a gag prize on a game show ended up costing the producers a lot of money? In 1956, during the run of the original The Price is Right, a farmer in Texas won an elephant as a “bonus” prize. Producer Bob Stewart (1920-2012) had intended the elephant to be a gag gift, planning to give the winner $4,000 cash instead. The farmer, however, wanted the elephant. After some protracted arguing (and a reported threat of a lawsuit), Stewart relented and had an elephant delivered to the farmer’s Texas ranch. The elephant cost Stewart far more than the cash prize he intended to give the contestant. (So the price was really wrong.)

Now … you know!

ChipNASA

NOW….I know I can post The As(s)teroid of Insults®™ successfully when it’s time

Present
Unusual week at the GB compound as multiple vehicles in the GB Family Motorpool had battery problems, on a week where 2 grandkids returned to college – needing to travel to two different campuses of the same college on some days – the homeschool coop group restarted, etc etc etc.
Poor #1 son was having to repair one of his vehicles in a freezing rain – but got it done.
