Former FDA commissioner says social distancing rules were arbitrary and made up

| September 20, 2021

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, who was Commissioner of the FDA from 2017 until 2019, is a current Pfizer board of directors member, and a contributor and guest to both CNBC and CBS gave an interview to CBS’s Face the Nation yesterday. In it, he pointed out what many of us have been skeptical about from the start. Namely, that the government has no fucking clue what they’re doing. According to Dr. Gottlieb, both the Trump Administration and Biden Administration have been playing political games as they all lecture us to “Follow the science.”

Scott Gottlieb, the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), admitted during an interview on Face the Nation that the six foot social distancing rule recommended by public health officials for months on end was actually “arbitrary in and of itself,” and he noted that “nobody knows where it came from.”

Speaking with Face the Nation’s Margaret Brennan, Gottlieb discussed the rules and risks early in the pandemic, explaining that the Trump administration shifted its focus to the impact lockdowns and rules would have on the economy and children.

“My view is that they were sold on the idea that you weren’t going to be able to really affect the spread and that anything you did was just going to have so many repercussions in terms of impact on children who might not be in school. Impact on the economy, that the costs were worse than the disease,” he said, explaining that schools were a “perfect example of the lack of effective policymaking.”

“So the single reason why most schools remained shut was because the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) was telling them they had to keep kids six feet apart,” he said. “If- if CDC has said you can only- you have to keep kids three feet apart, then a lot of schools would have been able open.”

“And in fact, when the Biden administration wanted to open schools in the spring, this past spring, they got the CDC to change that guidance from six feet to three feet,” Gottlieb continued, admitting the original guidance was “arbitrary” and had unknown origins.

“The six feet was arbitrary in and of itself, nobody knows where it came from,” he said. “The initial recommendation that the CDC brought to the White House and I talk about this was 10 feet, and a political appointee in the White House said we can’t recommend 10 feet.”

“Nobody can measure 10 feet. It’s inoperable. Society will shut down. So the compromise was around six feet. Now imagine if that detail had leaked out. Everyone would have said this is the White House politically interfering with the CDC’s judgment,” he continued:

The CDC said 10 feet, it should be 10 feet, but 10 feet was no more right than six feet and ultimately became three feet. But when it became three feet, the basis for the CDC’s decision to ultimately revise it from six to three feet was a study that they had conducted the prior fall. So they changed it in the spring. They had done a study in the fall where they showed that if you have two masked individuals, two people wearing masks, the risk of transmission is reduced 70% with masks if you’re three feet apart. So they said on the basis of that, we can now make a judgment that three feet is an appropriate distance. Which begs the question if they had that study result in the fall? Why didn’t they change the advice in the fall? Why did they wait until the spring?

Those decisions, he added, easily undermine Americans’ confidence in advice from public health officials.

“This is how the whole thing feels arbitrary and not science-based. So we talk about a very careful, science-based process and these anecdotes get exposed, and that’s where Americans start to lose confidence in how the decisions got made,” he added.

Arbitrary and non-scientific. Here’s my reaction:

I always suspected there was something fishy about the fathom.

That was some feet that they acomplished by BS’ing everyone about what I read in the above post.

JustALurkinAround

Everyone knew it was made up. As Carlin said about doctors, it’s all guess work in a white coat.

JustALurkinAround

I did like the “feet” Jeff mentioned. Cheeky, Cheeky.

“…government has no fucking clue what they’re doing.”

And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is the only truthful thing said about this whole scamdemic from the Chinese Communist Originated Virus Infecting Disease of 2019. And sadly, that statement describes the state that our grubermint has been in for a loooooong time.

So now I follow some the money. All the businesses which have installed the floor markers for 6′ of distance, are buying them from companies who are making a ton of money. I have not been in a store in a year and a half that has not had these in place.

IT’S TEH COVID!!! SAVE ME FROM YOUR GERMS!!! DON’T CONTAMINATE ME!!! WEAR 14 MASKS AND STAY AT HOME!!!

THE SCIENCE IS SETTLED!!!

MCPO USN

There is no science. Masks recommended with no standard. People are walking around with anything on their face, half of which you can see through. Totally ineffective but keeps the Karens from screaming. Biden wants to keep scaring us so mail in voting will take place in the 2022 mid-terms so they can continue the Democrud thievery.

New reports are the vaccines sent to Haiti and other third world counties are really fucking people up health-wise, which is part of the plan. Buckle up, shit’s getting real.

Three feet means nothing when you can sneeze germs five feet. And six feet means nothing when those sneezed germs can still float past that five feet up to ten feet before they start to settle…on the surface of furniture, where we put our hands…
Oh, I don’t need to continue, you’re all smart enough to figure it out…..or so I’m told.

Cults use arbitrary rules and punishments, and frequent changes to keep their victims off-balance, afraid, and compliant. The more irrational the better.

Some German public health scientist pulled 2 meters out of his ass about Tuberculosis control in the 1890s. Even then it was a guesstimate.

As many of us here, and elsewhere, have said all along, we have no issue with following the science. The frustration is that most of us are still waiting to hear the science.

We’ve heard a lot of junk science, opinion, and basically voodoo crap but very little true science even this far out. Those who analyze actual data are castigated.

Yep. Most of it is just stupid. Most of it has very little to do with saving lives and more to do with controlling people. Imagine that. Pols and bureaucrats devising ways to control the masses.

Commissar

They were not baseless. Distance lowers the viral load that another person is exposed to. Closer increases the viral load, further decreases it. Six feet was just chosen as a reasonable distance that was easy to visualize and not to difficult for compliance. And we didn’t have the research necessary to know what the optimal distance was, or did we have the time to find out. The six foot distance was not even decided in the US it was based on the two meter distance other countries that were in the throes of the pandemic a few weeks before us had adopted. It was about reducing the probability of spread and thereby slowing the spread so it could be managed by our medical resources. These stupid posts you all make trying to poke holes at the measures taken to reduce the spread snow a fundamental lack of understanding with respect to the entire concept of managing a pandemic. Some of you live in communities where you might find yourselves turned away at hospitals that are overrun with Covid patients because fellow idiots like some of you have made a political decision to be partisan about this pandemic. You could die from an injury or condition you might otherwise have survived because the ICUs are mostly full of disphits in some communities. There was one aspect of the social distance rules that were not sufficiently understood..and that is enclosed poorly ventilated spaces make the social distance essentially irrelevant after about 20 minutes due to the concentration of virus in the air. That should have been better publicized. So that business and patrons whining about outdoor dining understood why it was a requirement. I am tired of the willful ignorance of those that have decided their partisan loyalties means they should ignore our try to undermine pandemic measures. The measures make sense, except some of the ham fisted business closures, social distancing and masks made sense…vaccines are an obvious choice. Mandates are an unfortunate necessity because our society is full of self centered morons with zero civic conscientiousness. I never saw a… Read more »

Please, follow your own social distancing rules and separate yourself from here. Your narrow-minded screeds are old. The posters here that discuss the COVID vaccine are not anti vaxers, as you’d have us believe. They are questioning a single “vaccine”, and rightly so. I’ve had the vaccine, and I still have questions. If you choose to swallow and regurgitate the official party line, you have the right and freedom to do so. Your only purpose in life is to screech at the folks here who do not subscribe to your line of thought, be it COVID, communism/socialism, any subject you deem yourself to be an expert in. You are what we refer to as a “Shit Stirrer”. You’re quite good at it, too. It should be on your resume’, just below your major skill, and that is being an insufferable fraud. Now, enjoy the rest of your day.

Commissioner Wretched

And I have never once seen a liberal post about how statistically … Covid-19 is still insignificant.

When 97+% of the people do NOT have it … and of those who do, 98+% do NOT die … that’s statistically insignificant.

What say you to that, Lars?

Commissioner Wretched

To follow up on my own reply, consider this:

The local school system where I work puts out a weekly Covid report. This week, 13 students in the system are out with the virus.

Thirteen.

There are 2,700 students in the system.

That means that 0.005% of the students are sick with Covid. And some Nervous Nellies out there STILL want to shut things down and go back to virtual school, because virus.

Give me a fucking break.

Dude — your username is literally Commissar.

We know whose side you’re on with issues before you even show up to parrot your bullshit.

“I never saw a single post here whining about the vaccine mandates that have existed your entire lives. Rubella, measles, polio…”

Probably because they work. Just a hunch.

That said, I agree with all that SFC D said. Begone, Spapos.
