France Recalls US, Australian Ambassadors

| September 19, 2021

The oldest US ally has recalled its ambassadors to the US and Australia, in response to America’s recently announced national security partnership Australia and Great Briton.

In a statement, Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs, said Friday that the recall was made at the request of France’s President Emmanuel Macron.

“This extraordinary decision reflects the exceptional seriousness of the announcements made on September 15 by Australia and the United States,” Le Drian said. “The abandonment of the ocean-class submarine project that Australia and France had been working on since 2016 and the announcement of a new partnership with the United States aimed at studying the possibility of future cooperation on nuclear-powered submarines constitute unacceptable behavior among allies and partners; their consequences affect the very concept we have of our alliances, our partnerships, and the importance of the Indo-Pacific for Europe.”

Another unforced error by Biden’s handlers that will further the damage already done.

French minister decries ‘duplicity’ in U.S. submarine deal

France’s foreign minister has denounced what he called the “duplicity, disdain and lies” surrounding the sudden rupture of France’s lucrative contract to make submarines for Australia in favor of a U.S. deal

By ROD McGUIRK and ELAINE GANLEY

PARIS — France’s foreign minister on Saturday denounced what he callerd the “duplicity, disdain and lies” surrounding the sudden rupture of France’s lucrative contract to make submarines for Australia in favor of a U.S. deal and declared that a crisis is at hand among the Western allies.

A day after France recalled its ambassadors to the United States and Australia, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian pummeled what he suggested was a backroom deal that betrayed France.

The recalling of its ambassadors “signifies the force of the crisis today” between the French government and Washington and Canberra, he said in an interview on France 2 television. He said it was the first time ever that France, the United States’ oldest ally, has recalled its ambassador to the U.S.

The announcement by President Joe Biden of the deal, alongside the leaders of Australia and Britain, for at least eight nuclear-powered submarines has set France in a fury. The French had signed a contract in 2016 for a dozen conventional diesel-electric submarines and the work to make them was already underway. The deal with French majority state-owned Naval Group was worth at least $66 billion.

All for the Aussies having nuke submarines, to keep China guessing. The existing contracts could have been renegotiated and the entire ugly affair avoided, yet instead we have another feather in Joe’s foreign policy hat.

Diesel Electric subs? That’s what France wanted to build for Australia. And they cost $5.5 billion each. For…diesel-electric.

I think the Brits and the Aussies made a better deal for nuke-powered subs.

But on the other hand, there were probably a dozen ways the Biden team could have eased France into this, but they choice option 13.

My regards for France are not very good, to begin with. They still think they won both world wars and are the definition of hubris.

Touché!

Really, if someone pays that much for a sub in this day and age, it ought to be nuclear.

STSC(SW/SS)

Buy a few Virginia class subs for 2.6 Billion each because Americans need jobs. We can throw in a few MK48 torpedoes as a closer.

5JC

Well you see New Zealand has a perma ban on nuclear powered vessels docking in New Zealand. This has significant impacts that caused the US to suspend ANZUS with them. So a Diesel Electric attack sub kind of made sense in that regard with Australia.

Additionally the US had to get all kinds of waivers to allow the Aussies Nukes. This wasn’t going to happen under the warmongering Trump but the peacenik Biden gets a free pass because he isn’t evil and doesn’t cause butt hurt feelings on Twitter.

Diesel Electric boats are very dangerous in close local waters, the boats in question probably have a 2 week between charging duration. In the 80’s the KILO class had a 168 hour limit, at 3knots that is a threat in cosatl defense, or offensive actions because they are very silent between charging sessions.
Nuclear boats have a very loud set of problems caused by the reactor, and support gear, that might not be suitable for the Aussies uses.
Diesel boats are still a valid platform in their strengths, but not like the WWII wolf pack uses by Germany.

Germany’s Type 212A and 214 would have been a better choice. Half-billion or less upfront cost, the Germans rarely miss deadlines, and they have top-notch AIP fuel cell systems.

STSC(SW/SS)

Take that you elite European assholes. The Democrats have done a great job screwing the American people so you thought you were exempt.

That’s what Macron gets for sticking his finger in Biden’s face. You frenchies can’t do that only the Military Media Industrial Complex can do that.

Au Revoir douche bags.

The best part is the liberal media is pretending like it isn’t even happening. MSNBC for example is running six front page articles on Trump:

– What evangelicalism says about white America in the age of Trump

– A special prosecutor may be our last hope to prosecute Trump

– Durham’s Russia investigation ends not with a bang — but with a whimper

– Calling Trump a ‘cancer,’ prominent Republican to walk away from Congress

– Why one of Trump’s most damaging legacies is somehow getting worse

– Mike Pence’s Jan 6. hero narrative just got a plot twist courtesy of Dan Quayle

TDS is a real thing. They don’t really have time to cover a historic break in relations between the US and France, the collapse in Afghanistan, raging inflation and everything else. Orange Man Bad, Orange Man Bad.

Most call it TDS while I refer to it as Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder, TARD for short. Those who let it run their lives to the point where it dominates I choose to refer to as Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder Operatives, TARDOS while those who really let it run their lives are Really Exceptional Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder Operatives, yes, RETARDOs which I consider the vast majority of those in the liberally biased mainstream media to be!

While it may be humorous to see the French get screwed on a multi-billion dollar business deal, this is one more betrayal by the US that is going to make many other countries, particularly those long considered allies, far less inclined to believe that the United States can be trusted in military/defense/industrial matters.

The left was horrified that Trump merely wanted our European allies to pay their fair share of their defense costs. Now the left is either silent or uncritical as Biden screws one of our major allies out of a huge defense contract.

Whom will Biden betray next: Israel, Taiwan, South Korea?

Fyrfighter

Well, it’s not at all surprising to see joe screw the pooch once again, and for the left to be completely silent about it..
At the same time, seeing the cheese eating surrender monkeys cry about it is a bit amusing.. As someone above pointed out, they still think the won both World Wars, instead of recognizing that we saved their asses both times, so what their actual contribution to world security, and their value as an ally is highly questionable, at least since 1815 or so..
Now as Poe points out, I believe the bigger issue is how other allies that do actually contribute to our security react to this backstabbing..

Poetrooper

Fyrfighter, the very strong response of the French in recalling their ambassador for the first time in our history is what is concerning here. Such a reaction strongly indicates underhanded double-dealing by the Biden administration.

Had the French merely lost out in a competitive bidding process, we likely would have heard complaints but not have seen such a strong diplomatic response, which clearly indicates that Joe Biden did something treacherous and underhanded.

It seems the Biden administration is not only untrustworthy in dealing with American citizens but also our allies.

Ol’ Poe has no problem believing this…

Fyrfighter

Neither do I Poe, neither do I. Anyone who’s been paying even the slightest attention to Biden over the decades since his wife died knows he’s a Lying POS and crooked as a dogs hind leg..

Or, they expect him to fold like a cheap suit.

Well Hell’s bells! If those Frenchy’s want some diesel electric submarines, we might be able to get some plans from Popular Mechanics, get some welding machines from Harbor Freight…. Harbor Freight even has generators and I think read, somewhere, that the sons of bitches can be wired in series.

OTOH, you just know that John Fonda-Kerry is gonna swoop right down on this good deal, surrender the United States and probably the U.N., at the same time, just to prove that he can speak French faster than a Marseilles dope dealer trying to cheat a Moroccan Muslim with a machete and a hairlip girlfriend that looks like a cross between TrrrrAAAzzUh and YokoOhNo.

Tallywhagger

Thanks, I was not aware of that curious proposal.

At this juncture, to borrow an old phrase, I am not so sure that the Aussie’s are prepared to have such advanced weapons. Given their departure to tyranny and suffering upon their defenseless population(s), they need to deal with an internal reorganization.

Development costs of the original nuclear design passed along plus cost of developing new conventional powerplant for this… Cha-ching!!

Consider this: For the first time in the history of the United States, the French Republic has withdrawn its American ambassador. The Dems screamed that Trump was going to destroy NATO, but it took Democrat Biden to betray the French to the point of pulling their ambassador for the first time EVER in both our histories.

You can bet that strategic planners all over the world are looking at their defense plans and wondering how they can revamp them to fend off invasion without their militarily strongest ally.

As I said above, Israel, Taiwan and South Korea for sure, but you can certainly add Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, the Baltic States, perhaps even the Philippines and our newest best bud, Poland.

Folks in those countries have to be sleeping uneasily these days…

STSC(SW/SS)

Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals at it’s best.
Isolate – United States by driving our allies into the hands of our enemies.
Attack – US Citizens and demoralize them to the point they won’t fight back.
Destroy – The Constitution and turn the US into a feudal society.

Concur.

Saw where Fatty da Kim is upset that we are up-arming the Aussies, promising dire retaliation.

UpNorth

Yet, the US didn’t recall our ambassador when Chuckie deGaulle withdrew from NATO and invited everyone to leave France.

Poetrooper

North, ol’ Poe’s not making a value judgment, but rather commenting on how the actions of the French indicate how seriously their government (as well as other allied governments around the world) is taking this situation.

Clearly, it is not one of America’s finer moments…

UpNorth

True, I guess, Poe. This seems like a big story about a customer shopping around for a better deal, much like one would get a quote from the Dodge dealer for a 1/2 ton pickup truck, and commit to the deal, then backing out because they got a better price on a Chevy Silverado with all of the bells and whistles.

26Limabeans

So it’s about money.
Now the whole deal will end up under water.

Might want to check out the Swedish diesel subs. These subs can stay submerged for weeks & are ultra quiet. It had a confirmed hit on the USS Ronald Reagan during wargame exercises. Have a high-low mix of nuclear & diesel subs in the fleet.

MustangCryppie

Not a surprise that the sub skunked Reagan.

In a naval war, today’s subs would wreak havoc on the surface fleet.

A Proud Infidel®™

Ever heard of the USS Walter Mondale? it accompanies the USS Jimmy Carter and goes belly-up anytime the USS Ronald Reagan is near!

Dan

Except tg2e French couldn’t deliver. French should not have screwed around like they did. Shutting the plant down for whole month in August to go on vacation. 1/3 the workforce is off for 2 days every month to attend union sponsored protests. Union meetings every week that drag on for hours. Most cost overruns so far were due to French worker culture which is abysmal at best.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

You could lower the cost of making submarines by using baking soda as fuel. I had one that worked in a bath tub or kitchen sink.

26Limabeans

I had one of those Frogmen that ran on baking soda.

Hack Stone

Dat’s a good one. Hack used all of his submersion tablets on Christmas Day. Then he ended up breaking, and it became an ISP (Improvised Submarine Pistol). Conned Billy Craigen down on the corner for him to give Hack his six shooter cap gun for the submarine pistol. Then Momma Stone made Hack return the six shooter to Billy Craigen.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

What was the ring with a mini cannon on it that shot out a piece of cerial.

Jeff, that was the 1951 Gabby Hayes Shooting Cannon Ring that shot out Quaker Puffed Wheat.

You know that things have gotten really ceralous when you’re using a cannon.

I was doing some TAD (Traipsing Around Drinking) in France back in ’73. The only Frenchies I met that liked Americans were the old folks that had been around in WWII.

Claudine Longet liked Americans in Combat! as the French resistance gal.

My old XO was the advisor to the Aussies. Not sure if he’s still working with them, but I’d love to hear his take on the issue.

It’s going to take a lot of re-engineering for American submarine manufacturers to provide the Australians boats that can counteract the Coriolis Effect.
