Aargh! Why, Why, WHY did we abandon Bagram? This makes NO SENSE!
OK, so for those of you not familiar with the area (I flew into Bagram and departed from HKIA which at that time was just called Kabul International Airport when I left.)
Here’s the deal: Bagram is located about 25 miles North of Kabul, in an open plain between the mountains. There are villages nearby but they are fairly small. Bagram, of course, was a major Soviet air base and had all the facilities that billions of US dollars could create.
It ALSO had something that HKIA does not have: A defensible perimeter.
By contrast, HKIA is located on the Northern edge of Kabul, very close to some major highways and very close to the population center. There is almost no way to secure it as it is surrounded by the city on all sides.
I CANNOT understand why the generals who managed this withdrawal chose to abandon Bagram in favor of HKIA?
Bagram was LITERALLY the first place the US occupied and it SHOULD have been the last place we left.
And as much as I’d love to hate on Biden for this, let’s be honest here: The choice of where to withdraw from was a MILITARY decision made by our generals. They were the ones who chose to abandon Bagram in favor of HKIA.
BTW the last US KIA in Afghanistan was some time in early 2020 until this happened. This was 100% avoidable with just a rudimentary amount of common sense.
Not at all certain that it was a military decision. State seems to be running the show completely. Might explain why none of this makes any sense from a military perspective.

I remember this well. I was serving with my Dustoff unit in Alaska. At that time we were heartbroken and embarrassed. I didn’t think we would ever have anything that sad happen again as far as diplomatic failures. Until Joe….
I was a HS Senior when this happened. My Uncle was visiting, he was a Navy helicopter pilot, he’d just retired 2 weeks prior. He started listing names of pilots who he thought could’ve been on this mission. As I recall, he was spot on. One in particular, (I forget the name) he said “that sunuvabitch never could fly at night”.
Not trying to deflect from this tragedy in A-Stan SFC, but this video gives some interesting facts about Eagle Claw from, a retired Delta Operator Mike Vining, who was on the mission. Very long, but insightful. The sand storm was only one component of many failures. God Bless the Marines and Corpsman that was lost today as well as the 8 operators from the past mission.
I remember this as well. But I didn’t hear it at the time, but some time later. I was onboard the Nimitz when Jimmuh made this statement. That failure hit like a kick in the balls. Made them leave the airport. They are now in the hands of the bad guys instead of being on their way home and/or to safe haven.
