News On Afghanistan and Our Troop Withdrawal

| July 26, 2021

The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan is proceeding, however slowly it may seem. But the end date for our withdrawal is, as indicated below, August 31. Meantime, embedded in the first linked article is a video by an Indian news group which clearly indicates that the Taliban are becoming more and more bold about their own presence and intentions in Afghanistan. They are currently going after Afghans who are Sikhs. No, they’re not gone. They never were. They just pulled back, regrouped and now they are striking again.

From the article:  United States will continue to carry out airstrikes to support Afghan forces facing attack from the insurgent Taliban, a regional US commander said on Sunday as US and other international forces have drawn down troops in Afghanistan.

The Taliban escalated its offensive in recent weeks, taking rural districts and surrounding provincial capitals, after US President Joe Biden said in April US troops would be withdrawn by September, ending a 20-year foreign military presence.

“The United States has increased airstrikes in support of Afghan forces over the last several days and we’re prepared to continue this heightened level of support in the coming weeks if the Taliban continue their attacks,” US Marine General Kenneth McKenzie told a news conference in Kabul.

McKenzie, who leads US Central Command, which controls US forces for a region that includes Afghanistan, declined to say whether US forces would continue airstrikes after the end of their military mission on August 31.

“The government of Afghanistan faces a stern test in the days ahead … The Taliban are attempting to create a sense of inevitability about their campaign,” he said. – article

Frankly, it is no surprise that the  Taliban are growing more and more bold. The entire area has never known anything but warfare since the beginning of civilization. And once we are gone and the Taliban really get back to their life’s work of destroying anything they don’t like, we’ll get invited to return and “fix it” for the Afghans.

The odds on a USA return to That Place? I’d guess about 5 to 1, we’ll find ourselves back there within TWO years.

Prove I’m wrong.

I’ll take that bet and counter.

Something big is going to happen and we won’t completely leave and instead send “advisors”, followed by boots. But it will be a “new” war.

SFC D

This will end up just like “Operation Joint Endeavor”, 1995. Bill Clinton promised us it was a 1 year mission. Guess what, folks. It’s still going. It just gets a new name every year.

Roh-Dog

I FOR, U FOR, WE ALL FOR!
At least the EU is footing the bill…?

timactual

It wasn’t just Clinton. Our “one year” mission was a bipartisan effort. Bob Dole, for example, also made a “one year” promise.

SFC D

Fair enough. Except Dole wasn’t CinC.

Meanwhile, Yahoo! has a useful article for once:

“People Are Pointing Out Signs That Someone Was Raised Poorly, And There Are No Lies Detected,” by Buzzfeed via Yahoo! Life, 25 Jul 2021

That was excellent.

Surprised it was on a mainstream site.

Failed wars have consequences. It seems the longer we kick the hornets’ nest the more stinging. You’d figure the idiots of the generation that was there on Max Yasgur’s farm in ’69 woulda known gooder.

I ain’t going. 5 to 1, one in five…Whoopee we’re all gonna die! (apologies to The Doors and Mr Joe and his Fish)

Say what you want about the CIA’s Laurel Canyon counterculture op, but DAMN did they make some good music.

China is already filling the vacuum
It’s their turn

KoB

Yep, and the Chinese Communists will turn the “Graveyard of Empires” into a Empire wide graveyard. And the Chicoms will not care how many people, on either side, are killed. They have their eye on a new “Silk Road” and the mineral resources that will become available. They will have to literally kill every man, woman, and child to accomplish their goal. And they would gladly do it.

SFC D

They’ll likely follow the tactics and teachings of Ghengis Khan. It’s seared into their brains.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

That’s a tougher sell worldwide as they have no righteous claim to it…it’s not like Hong Kong or Taiwan where they might have a legitimate claim with respect to a united China.

Burning Afghanistan to the ground by China when they’ve not been attacked or threatened by Afghanistan is unlikely.

What’s more likely is an alliance of sorts made with the Taliban as the Chinese puppets. Because the Chinese won’t give a shit what the Taliban does to the people of Afghanistan as long as the Taliban does the bidding of China in the market place or logistical space as China sees appropriate.

Afghanistan is connected to Xinjiang via the Wakhan Corridor Nature Refuge.
Xinjiang is home to the Uyghur people.

Xinjiang already has multiple fenced and heavily guarded “re-education centers capable of housing up to 10,000 Uyghurs. Perhaps they will attempt “re-education” of the Afghan people.

penguinman000

And the Russians.

I’m not sure the Chinese genocide Uyghurs in China is going to be well tolerated by the fellow members of the Ummah in Chechnya.

timactual

Well, we spent 20 years “training” and equipping the Afghan Army. The question remains, though—–

Veritas Omnia Vincit

So are you suggesting that if we tell the enemy when we’re leaving they will just bide their time and take advantage of that knowledge?

Huh, who knew am I right?

All kidding aside if we’re not willing to burn the place to the ground staying there for all eternity seems of little benefit to our nation.

There’s no controlling the nation with an Afghan puppet regime…it’s either all in or all out otherwise it’s a slow war of attrition that no one in the US will support after a while. And rightly so…

You can’t make chicken pie from chicken shit.

Deja vu…

timactual

“So are you suggesting…”

LOL
Seems I have read that very suggestion numerous times.

AW1 Rod

As expected and predicted. Just because we quit doesn’t mean our enemies will. Ever. And now, our children and grandchildren will have to deal with this, because we lacked the will to do so.

timactual

LOL
We also lack the means. If you haven’t learned that after 20 years in Afghanistan and more years in other countries, there’s no hope for you.
