I love goats too, ‘specially BBQed…a dish best served from a tailgate on or about the 2nd weekend in December, well cooked, just like the (BEAT) Navy team is.
We know that our very own, Beloved AW1Ed is not a famous Chef. EVERYBODY knows that all Navy Cooks are actually SEALs and by his own admission, ‘Ed is an Aeronautically Designated Squidly Swabbie that jumps out of perfectly good aircraft (sans parachute) to get swim rings to people that had to jump out of broken planes.
And that magic word of the day? That’s the magic word everyday.

The army existed for all 245. It was never decommissioned. The navy & Marine Corps were shuttered for several yrs in the late 18th century.
246 years. The US soon realized it made a strategic error shutting down the Navy and rectified the mistake. They then handed the Barbary Pirates their collective asses. With Marines.
Not exactly. The standing army was indeed mothballed, the concept being volunteer state regiments more closely aligned to what we would consider the national guard. The founding fathers hated the idea of a standing army, given the trouble they had just had with one from England.
The Navy and Marines were also placed into a cadre status for roughly the same time.

But remember, the first Engineer Officers were appointed by General Washington 2 days later, 16 June 1775. Happy Birthday to my current branch of service and let’s not forget to hoist one for the Engineers on Wednesday. As for me, I will toast the occasion of the Army’s birthday with a dram of Evan Williams 1783.
