Bus hijacking by Army trainee raises questions about health screenings

Former Army trainee Jovan Collazo

Army Times reports;

In the days after Army trainee Jovan Collazo allegedly fled his Fort Jackson basic training unit and used an unloaded M4 carbine to hijack a school bus in South Carolina, his attorney has indicated his mental health may have played a factor.

Army recruiters with whom Army Times spoke say it’s not outside of the realm of possibility that Collazo slipped through a medical screening system that operates primarily on the honor of recruiters and their applicants.

Recruiters focused only on filling slots, MEPS screenings designed to only root out the worst physical disqualifiers, and thorough background screenings only for those who require a TS-SCI clearance. The system is designed to allow these people into uniform with the hope that the drill sergeants will weed them out. Except the DSs are judged by the percentage they push through their pipelines. They hope these people get weeded out at their units. So on and so forth.

At every step people likely see a problem, but kick it down the road. This isn’t a new phenomenon. I spoke about Private First Class Jonathan Spicer (posthumous Navy Cross recipient) before, who made it all the way to a rifle platoon in Vietnam before anyone dealt with his trying to claim conscientious objector status.

The Military is a semi representation of Society as a whole, albeit, only about 1% of Society join up. Imagine the number of real/perceived/or wanna be “nut jobs” that were processed thru the system back during the draft days. As discussed in the other thread, we all had them. Some were dealt with in training, others when they got to a unit, and some served an entire hitch, or even a career, and were still nut jobs.

And we all know that the lawers are just laying the groundwork to blame this episode on the Military, not the individual that is…well…a nut job.

Nailed it KoB, he is a class A nut job. I’m just glad no one got hurt (Not counting nut jobs attempt to fly during his very brief escape from custody, he earned that one).

Why are there so many crazy people on the streets?

Natural Selection is not working in our society anymore. These people would select themselves out of the gene pool, but nowadays, everyone can make it, one way or another, and pass their defective genes to the next generation.

The Democrats closed all the institutions and put
the crazies on the streets back in the sixties.
They bred. A lot.

This is a person of color who was yelled at by mean people he had never met before and this upset him. He just wanted to get home again. Kidnapping a school bus full of kids was simply a natural way to respond to the situation he was in.

“Recruiters focused only on filling slots, MEPS screenings designed to only root out the worst physical disqualifiers,…”

IMHO that’s only one part of the problem and I see this approach as an attempt by his lawer to attempt some variety of an Insanity Defense.

Anyone here want to bet me he went on deck at MEPS AFTER the 27th of the month?
