Marine Released After Plea

| May 20, 2021

Thae Ohu, (Former Corporal, USMC)

A Virginia Beach now former Marine whose legal case drew national attention because of its focusing on mental health and sexual assault issues has been released.
Under a plea agreement finalized last week, the Marine Corps dropped an attempted murder charge that stemmed from a domestic incident last April in Virginia Beach. She was released from the Navy brig in Chesapeake where she’d been held since June.
She has been sentenced to time served, a reduction in rank to E-1 and a Big Chicken Dinner, which has been suspended for six months.

Marine Cpl. Thae Ohu Released, Attempted Murder Charge Dropped in Plea Deal

By Chad Garland

The struggle to free Marine Cpl. Thae Ohu from the brig is over, but her family says their fight for justice isn’t.

Ohu was released under a plea agreement last week after nearly a year in pretrial confinement at the Navy Consolidated Brig in Chesapeake, Va., on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and other offenses stemming from an April 2020 attack on her then-boyfriend. The attempted murder charges were dropped as part of the deal.

The 27-year-old’s case drew widespread attention last year after her family publicly called for the Marine Corps to release her into mental health treatment, saying the assault came amid a psychological breakdown.

Ohu had suffered severe post-traumatic stress disorder and other issues since she was raped by a Marine supervisor in Japan five years ago, her advocates said.

“Although we cannot and will not overlook the failures of the United States Marine Corps and DamNeck leadership, we are overjoyed Thae is released from their toxic control,” the family said in a statement on the website Justice for Thae Ohu.

Ohu had been assigned to the Marine Corps Intelligence Schools at Dam Neck Naval Base in Virginia.

Advocates for rape survivors and others have criticized Ohu’s treatment as emblematic of the military’s mishandling of sexual assault and mental health issues.

I’m a bit vague on what all an alleged rape five years ago has to do with a plea bargain on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, etc. If there is any lesson here, it’s get a good lawyer.
Thanks, David

None of the time for the same crime if a man did it.
Change my mind.

Roh-Dog

I subbed my toe 5 years ago so my girl friend earned that black eye for burning the cabbage.

Both situations are absurd, and if we can’t agree gfy.

MI Ranger

I would seriously disagree. What is not clear from the case, is what was substantiated from the previous case in Japan, and what kind of counseling had been provided for her by the USMC in relation to her previous mental trauma. If she was transferred due to the previous incident, there should have been ongoing treatment.
It does not excuse her for going ballistic, but depending on what he did to initiate it, may however mitigate her upping the ante and therefore mitigate the murder charge.

Roh-Dog

I’m not a therapist, doctor nor do I play one in TV, but if 5 years of therapy and treatment were not sufficient enough to mitigate her trauma response she should have never been in uniform.

100% culpable, this is a miscarriage of justice fomented by marxie fairies.

Commissar

Dude, what the hell, did you just equate stunning your toe with being raped?

What the actual fuck is wrong with you.?

I am not defending, nor justifying the actions of this soon to be ex-Marine. Not former Marine. Ex-Marine.

I don’t have enough information to know how much her rape directly impacted her mental state during her attack on her boyfriend.

But it is appalling and truly disgusting that you would equate rape with stubbing your toe.

timactual

Are you also disgusted by his equating a black eye with attempted murder?

SFC D

It’s not nearly as appalling and disgusting as the fact that someone decided that you should be a Commissioned officer. In all of your over-educated ignorance, you failed to take note of the fact that Rob-Dog was pointing out the absurdity of the young Marine’s “He started it” excuse. That only works up to age 4. Or, if you’re a progressive liberal.

Poetrooper

“What the actual fuck is wrong with you.?”

Oh the irony is rich with YOU, of all people, asking THAT question, Lars.

And one would think a Berkeley grad student would know not to use a period AND a question mark.

Just my observation…

(Older sister, US NAVY PO) –
[and with a mental health waiver from the Defense Department
that Phyu said never should have been granted,
Ohu enlisted in the Marine Corps.]

Recruiter fail. It’s all here. December 2020.

An angelic smile fronting a head full of snakes…

Mason

Definitely in the No-Go zone on the Crazy/Hot Matrix.

Poetrooper

That is so funny and so dead on accurate to any man who has played the field for any length of time at all…

rgr769

I don’t know where you found this. But it is brilliant. A graphic representation of guidance on that old maxim, “don’t stick your dick in crazy” (cuz you will undoubtedly live to regret those few minutes of fun).

MarineDad61

Poetrooper,
“An angelic smile fronting a head full of snakes…”

Isn’t that the conundrum facing many on their overseas tours,
from hot Green Card seekers,
anywhere from Germany (Polish and Czech babes) to Italy
to PI, Korea, and Thailand,
and more recently, Kazakhstan?

timactual

“An angelic smile fronting a head full of snakes…”

Sorry, but you picked the wrong video. The girl is a saint and the guy is an asshole.

KoB

Remember when people with mental issues weren’t allowed to enlist?

Poetrooper

It will soon be a prerequisite…

5JC

Nope, I bounced a guy with hard Asberger’s. How he graduated basic without knowing how to polish boots, shave and shower was a mystery to me.

Andy11M

Hey, those Drills gotta keep the graduation rate up or the BCT commander won’t get his service award.

timactual

Gee, such an improvement over those low-quality draftees.

SFC D

I got one too. Somehow got passed through basic and AIT, never should’ve been allowed past the recruiting office. Nicest kid in the world, but completely unable and unprepared to function on his own. It’s the only time I felt bad putting a Soldier out. Had no other choice.

MarineDad61

KoB,
I thought so,
until 1 week into Air Force basic training in ’83.

I wonder what ever happened to the TexMex guy
who woke us all up at 2:00am, singing in the latrine,
whacking off standing, with toilet paper shoved in his ears?

It was a harbinger of things to come in tech school.

MI Ranger

What was he singing?

MarineDad61

MI Ranger,
Who knows?
Sounded like Espaniolo Barryo Manilowso.
It turned to yelling and crying when the TI dragged him out,
and 2 tired looking young SPs pulled him out the bay door
and down the echo chamber stairwell.
Never to be heard or seen again.

timactual

They still aren’t. This was a fraudulent enlistment, with the aid of a crooked recruiter.

5JC

Those have always happened, going back to the Revolutionary War.

M48DAT

My DS advised our PLT to never stick your dick in crazy.

Slow Joe

Why do people get that crazy?

It is really hard for me to relate to crazy people who have mental breakdowns. Mental health problems seem to me as an excuse to behave as a toddler without fearing the consequences.

However, Big Army treat it as real, so I got no choice but to do the same and the guys with mental issues, guys who have never deployed, mind you, to behavioral health for mental treatment.

Slow Joe

*and send the guys with mental issues to behavioral health

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Is anyone else wondering how she gets into intel school with pre-existing mental health concerns?

I suspect she gets the plea deal so everyone can hide the things they don’t want seeing the light of day in this case.

timactual

“Is anyone else wondering…”

Nope. Remember Bradley Manning?

Poetrooper

Most likely very high test scores, much prized in intel, in both cases…
