Portland’s $6M Gun Violence Prevention Plan

| April 8, 2021

Scenic Portland, OR

In a flash of rationality Portland’s City Council has delegated 6 million USD to further the prevention of gun violence in the city. Gun crime has increased nearly threefold since last year when the same council disbanded the existing Gun Violence Reduction Team, for fear it was unfairly targeting minorities. The city police can certainly use the added funds, except they aren’t going to receive any. Of course.

Portland Excludes Police from $6 Million Gun-Violence Prevention Plan

By ZACHARY EVANS

The Portland City Council on Wednesday approved a $6 million plan to curb a rise in gun violence in the city, without adding funds to the city’s police department.

The plan will provide $4.1 million in grants to non-profit groups that work with Portland’s Office of Violence Prevention, as well as $1.4 million to the Parks and Recreation bureau to hire new park rangers, Oregon Public Radio reported. The new rangers would patrol city parks at least through the end of the year.

Portland has recorded 284 shootings since the beginning of 2021, compared with 100 over the same period in 2020.

The plan comes after the City Council voted last summer to disband the police’s Gun Violence Reduction Team, which some council members said disproportionately targeted people of color. Mayor Ted Wheeler was able to gain approval from the council to reassign officers to form a new reduction team within the police.

“What we’re doing today is giving these young people a sense of hope,” Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty said of the new plan. “What we’re doing today is starting a pathway to making sure we’re investing dollars where they will make the most good.”

Portland recorded 858 shootings in 2020, in which 224 people were hit and 52 died. The number of shooting deaths was the highest in Portland since 1993, when 54 people died.

“A sense of hope” is meaningless, and somehow I doubt Portland’s parks are hotbeds of gun violence. Like Baltimore, the people get the government they elect. Read the entire article here: National Review

  1. ChipNASA says:

I say the City of Baltimore give me TEN (10) million dollars to research and come up with suggestions to solve the city’s gun and violence problems.
I’m sure I can do that.
    Without question.
    100%, I guarantee it.
As a matter of fact, I’ll even VOLUNTEER to do it.
Now, I’ll just be waiting here for that check.

    • Mustang Major says:

      ChipNSA, Sorry, too late.

The government has given away tens of millions for solving Baltimore’s shooting problems. I think they came up with midnight basketball for their efforts.

      • rgr769 says:

Brilliant solution. If they are dribbling and shooting baskets, the gangsters can’t be out banging their fellow citizens. Except after or before the B-ball action, they can still do a drive-by or two.

  2. penguinman000 says:

Hmmm…You mean they can find money to address issues without taking it from the police budget in a blind and stupid manner? Who would’ve thought it?

If they had done this before going Helen Keller on the PD budget they could’ve actually seen some societal benefit.

  3. Commie-Tsar says:

What they need are more social workers… more free stuff for my brothers and sisters in the Antifa/BLM movements!

    IT’S FOR THE PEOPLE!!!

Oops, I hear the microwave telling me that my ramen is ready!

  4. AW1 Rod says:

Not mentioned is what the non-profit groups who will receive the $4.1 million in grants to work with Portland’s Office of Violence Prevention will actually do….if anything.

    • AW1Ed says:

Friends and relatives of Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty. They will do nothing to actually prevent gun violence, of course.

      • OWB says:

But they will talk about it. And be concerned. Probably have some events to raise awareness. Develop a theme song, a catchy logo, and some coloring books. Then talk some more.

There. Worth every million for them to continue to do nothing to address the issues. But the lefties will feel all warm and fuzzy because they are “doing” so much for the unfortunates and misfits who “need” them.

        • samoore says:

Oh, there will be at least one song.

They’ll probably have a contest to select a song or two, just like the state did for their O’bamaCare commercials.

  5. David says:

well, while the Dems think “if a drunk gets in a wreck on the interstate outside of town, you need to give up your car”… were it not a political third rail one could suggest that if a certain demographic committed gun crimes all out of proportion to their representation in the population, one would suggest not allowing them to own guns. You know, like they do people under restraining orders and such. I am sure the common point of all these shooters is that they all commit domestic violence or whatever.

  6. Roh-Dog says:

Why not just start direct payments via a “I Feelz Like Shootin’ Somebody” Fund and pay the self-professed, possible-murderer $6,410? It would negate longterm debt in the form of disability due to ‘mental anguish’ of the social workers and the pensions of these 9-to-5 park rangers that won’t even be patrolling while most crimes take place.
    But what do I know?
How about letting the cops handle bad guys?
oh, nm. Rereadeded the article…. Good luck Portland?

    • Roh-Dog says:

And 26.1% hit rate with a 6.1% murder rate, and an effective 23.2% murder/hit rate….?! Weak sauce. Who is teaching these guys marksmanship, Chiraq Skool of Banging?

  7. MarineDad61 says:

Philadelphia (PA) hired Portland’s police chief (Danielle Outlaw)
    as the city’s police commissioner.
    Let’s see how that’s working out…..

From the February 4 story link below:
As of Feb. 3, there were 51 murders compared to 38 this time last year.

From today’s Philly Police crime stats (April 7):
132 murders (a record), compared to 98 last year.

  8. Sparks says:

“…for fear it was unfairly targeting minorities.” Really? Because the minorities are producing the majority of gun crimes. They are the ones they should be targeting.

Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty said of the new plan. “What we’re doing today is starting a pathway to making sure we’re investing dollars where they will make the most good.”

Doing the most good would be adding $6 million to your police force. This is just a fairly land dream scheme at its worst.

Since parks are apparently a hotbed of gun crime, why not just use the $1.4 Million for better police patrols of the parks. Truth be told the parks are the hotbed of homeless slackers and losers, spending their day panhandling and doing drugs.

These folks like many cities will stare in the face of the white elephant in their communities and say “No I don’t think black on black or Hispanic on Hispanic shootings are the problem. They are just poor and underprivileged and if we just gave them hope (hope means money to the givers and the takers) then they would all be happy and taking care of each other. Fathers would stay with their baby momma and maybe even marry her and get a job.”

But, they know damned good and well that has not worked since the Great Society put people on the government tit. And it will never work until that tit is turned off.

It makes me think of the border wall which I am solidly for. But to me, the best way to stop this illegal migration is to stop the incentive for it. The incentive has been, if you get here, you will have housing, money, medical care, and food (all paid for by us, the taxpayers). Stop those incentives for everyone crossing the border and the majority will stop coming. Some still may but they will likely be looking for either honest work or gang connections and crime. Interrogation and background checking the ones who do come will weed out most of the criminals. Just my thoughts and sorry for the too-long post.

    • MI Ranger says:

If I recall correctly the riots are being staged and in some cases happening in the parks. The Police don’t go in…because it is not their “jurisdiction”. So these idiots decide that they need Park Rangers, whose jurisdiction it is, to patrol these parks and remove the violent protesters…yeah I think that is what that former President was doing sending Federal agents to work with you to do and you told him “No Way”. So reap what you sew!

      • UpNorth says:

$1.4 mil will fund the park rangers for how long? Til the end of the year? Maybe until the end of March next year? Who’s going to take a job that exposes them to BLM/Antifa that May end in 8 months or so?

  9. 11B-Mailclerk says:

    Reduce policing.

    Crime goes up.

Reduce policing that targets violent gun-using criminals.

    Violent crime goes way up.

    Blame guns.

    Pass more gun laws.

Don’t enforce existing laws against violent people. Perhaps target others who are not violent.

    Result is predictably more crime.

    Blame guns.

More laws needed, but not law enforcers targeting the violent. Need more laws!

    Repeat until “solved” .

    • rgr769 says:

A black former NFL player just shot and killed five people (at least four white) including two children, and wounded a sixth. Because of his race and his death by suicide, the MSM is giving him a pass, but they are blaming the guns he used (two semi-auto pistols). Several NBC commenters are saying this proves no one in this country should be allowed to own or possess any firearms, period.

      • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

People have been beaten to death with frozen fish, where are the laws calling for a ban on possessing that?

    • rgr769 says:

Tucker had an excellent section on his show tonight about the gun control BS.

  10. Daisy Cutter says:

Archie Bunker had an idea to solve all this…

  11. The Other Whitey says:

Portland is a shithole of its voters’ own making.

On a happier note, I just got to witness my youngest daughter take her first steps! The other three all walked while I was either up north on campaign fires or stuck at work on a staffing pattern. She’s the only one I got to watch walk.

  12. KoB says:

“…the people get the government they elect.” Nope, not anymore. The people are getting the government that is “elected” for them.

“…targeting people of color…” If Graybeard sees cutworms gnawing thru his ‘mater plants, he’s gonna target cutworms, not Lady Bugs. Stoopid hoomans.

In other stoopid political news, y’all see the headline about DHS spending $60 million a week to house and feed the unaccompanied migrant children? Better look quick, it’ll go the way of the terrorists and MS 13 dirtbags being caught.

    • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

“…DHS spending $60 million a week to house and feed the unaccompanied migrant children?”

While American homeless sleep on the streets.

  13. A Proud Infidel®™ says:

“The plan will provide $4.1 million in grants to non-profit groups that work with Portland’s Office of Violence Prevention,…”

And I wonder what percentage of that money will get funneled right back into the pockets of the Portland Mayor and cronies?
