Today is the day!

| March 4, 2021

March 4 has arrived. This was the original day a new president would be inaugurated. The date was changed in 1933 during the Second (and lesser if you ask me) Roosevelt Administration when the extra month and a half travel time to D.C. was no longer necessary. I’ll forgive you if you didn’t know that. Only hardcore history and trivia buffs (like myself) knew that before the last few weeks when suddenly the left and Democrats claimed that March 4 was now some sort of holy day for the far-right.

We’ve had thousands of National Guardsmen deployed to the Capitol since January 6th in anticipation of this day. They claimed this would be the day there’d be another attempt on the Capitol, hence why the District has been host to armed troops and prison-like fencing.

Jeff LPH 3 sends in this Military Times report;

An advisory sent earlier this week to members of Congress by Timothy Blodgett, the acting House sergeant-at-arms, said that the Capitol Police had “no indication that groups will travel to Washington D.C. to protest or commit acts of violence.”

But wait. Now that the acting Capitol Police Chief is testifying in front of Congress….

But that advisory was updated in a note to lawmakers Wednesday morning. Blodgett wrote that the Capitol Police had received “new and concerning information and intelligence indicating additional interest in the Capitol for the dates of March 4th – 6th by a militia group.”

In her testimony to the House panel, acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said her investigators had collected “some concerning intelligence,” but declined to provide any details publicly, saying that it was “law enforcement sensitive” and that she would provide a private briefing for the subcommittee members.

It’s worth noting that just last month the vast majority of her own officers, 92%, said they had no confidence in acting Chief Pittman’s leadership.  To be fair to her, the rank and file also have little faith in any of the Capitol Police command staff.

I guess we’ll see if the conspiracy theory nobody’s heard of adherents that will show up to overthrow the government on a date that has no significance to anyone.

Do you suppose they will actually bus in the astroturf “rioters”, or just claim their display of force scared them off?

rgr769

I am thinking the latter. That way the swamprats can claim the 6,000 ArNG soldiers deterred the would be “militia rioters.”

11B-Mailclerk

I hear the real date of the big event is 1 April.

And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street…

Just to be clear: There is NO inauguration today???

Well, OK then. Will carry on as if this is just another day. Continuing to do nothing special seems easy enough.

The Left will stir up “intelligence” reports of threats against the Capital for as long as the Dems have the votes. They don’t care if your local police & police precincts are being overrun. They don’t care if business is being looted. They don’t care if your schools are closed because their kids go to private schools with no teachers’ unions. to be quite honest, they only “care” about you to keep voting them into power. On day 1, China Joe put Americans out or work, boys on the girls’ sports team, and the price of gas has gone up about $.40 a gallon where I live. Never let them forget. Never vote Democrat.

NHSparky

It doesn’t matter HOW you vote anymore.

HR 1 will ensure that.

11B-Mailclerk

Of course it does. Some folks will vote Democrat. Others will vote Democrat harder and faster.

I’ll reserve (see what I did there?) judgement on this one. My small unit leader senses are tingling and indicating the potential of whining. Seems like everyone wants to be a victim these days.

Considering the prevalence of social media amongst the troops (USAWTFmoments and such) I would’ve expected pictures, videos, etc…

Even at the worst command I ever had, they still made sure folks were fed adequately.

KoB

I keep my “guard” up on every news story I read, p’man. Hard to tell what is legit or the troops just bitchin’. In my Commands, the troops ALWAYS came FIRST (ht 2 Sea Dragon). Reading thru some of the comments, it seems as if other states troops were having similar problems. Been awhile since I’ve been on a deployment, and never as a NG, but we always took a good mixture of troops with us…Including cooks, clerks, and Supply Daddys. Another point that hasn’t been covered in all of this NG Deployment is, are the Troops on Title 10 or 32? Are We, The People, paying for this, or is it up to each state that sent units in? One of my pards here is an Engineering Company NCO. They’ve been on Title 10 for the last year, cleaning nursing homes. A handful of Georgia Troops were sent to DC, but we’re not real sure which ones.

The political masters MUST be protected from the unwashed masses.

‘zactly. I figure that the staples are T-Rats and MRE’s, with an occasional bussed in dinner. If meals are being tossed, it’s likely because they were not wanted, not inedible. Honestly, the mid-rat plates they would deliver to us on night shift were (considerably) less than outstanding, but certainly not sub-standard. Me thinks the young un’s might be getting bored…
Oh, and about the whole parking lot sleeping arrangement bru-ha, it looked pretty dry to me, and no mud or sand anywhere. The only thing missing was iso-mats and/or cots, but I’m thinking that could have been easily remedied so I said ‘meh’ about that whole thing. Everyone here, and everyone there has had worse short term deployments than this. So I say suck it up and get paid.

I wouldn’t eat any of that crap. Whether that was common, I don’t know. The troops are saying it was. The higher highers are saying “I don’t know” and, “we are monitoring the situation”.

11B-Mailclerk

We had good chow.

I noticed COs eating the chow we were served. Hm.

Some COs would occasionally send a very junior man to grab a tray, and swap.

Good chow, oddly.

NHSparky

You obviously never ate Navy chow. On the boats it was pretty good until we got 60-70 days into an op, but my surface ship experience was that it pretty much universally sucked.

penguinman000

20 years as a Corpsman. Granted the only time on ship was as embarked troops.

I did a handful of peacetime floats, while the food wasn’t delicious (now the chow halls on the big FOBs in Iraq/Afghanistan were delicious), it was adequate most of the time. The few times it was crap the COC immediately got involved.

W2

As a SC dude, the rule was keep the chow hot. You could add Texas Pete, salt or pepper to your heart’s content, but hot navy chow would do the job just fine. Non-hot navy chow could fuggle up your day, and put your digestive tract in na state of flux.

11B-Mailclerk

Never had a bad meal at any DFAC on Ft Stewart. Every once in a while there was one item that wasn’t great, but still edible.

Only truly bad meal in the Army was an apparently spoiled MRE “barbecued” something where “is it supposed taste weird?” turned into a trip to the ER for food poisoning.

“Bland” was the biggest issue I had with field food, and a few small bottles of assorted seasoning from the Commissary solved that.

timactual

“Even at the worst command I ever had, they still made sure folks were fed adequately.”

Of course. Such things couldn’t happen in the new, professional, all-volunteer Army. In the old days we had to rely on Army cooks, probably draftees who didn’t want to be there, so such things could be expected. In today’s Army they outsource feeding the troops to civilian contractors, who are obviously better paid and ;more reliable than Army supervised draftees.

MSM did not make this up Mason. Though I am not surprised you are dutifully regurgitating today’s right wing talking points.

The reason March 4th is a concern is because of actual activity indicators and chatter. When extremist chatter mentions a specific date much more often than any other that date becomes a security concern. Even if the threat is unlikely to manifest into action…

And they have been talking about March 4th since the inauguration and their hopes that the inauguration was a trap to get all the lib leadership in one place so they could be arrested turned out to be another Q anon hoax theory.

So the few remaining cult members shifted their hopes to March 4th.

The total sum of the comments might be 57, but in his world, that rises to a level of concern and should be taken seriously.

The “tongue and cheek” language is “code speak” among that group, which also creates more concern.

The Other Whitey

“…suddenly the left and Democrats claimed that March 4 was now some sort of holy day for the far-right.”

I noticed at a young age that those on the left have a habit of explaining and/or dictating my supposed beliefs to me. There’s been quite a few times where I answered one of them with “Really? Wow, I never would’ve known that I believe that if you hadn’t told me!” Usually followed by a quick rundown of what I actually believe, and a reminder that my beliefs and values have nothing to do with their prejudices—well, either that, or I just tell them exactly how to fuck themselves if I’m feeling less patient. Sometimes all of the above.

OWB

Some of us actually noticed a long time ago that it is the left that likes to celebrate/commemorate significant (to them) dates. Righties, not so much.

Of course, the most serious loonies will find an excuse for whatever it is they want to do. If they “need” one, pretty much any excuse will do. Fanatics are dangerous no matter their cause. Maybe they won’t mind too much if the sane among us sit this one out.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/04/politics/capitol-security-march-4-conspiracies/index.html

LC

While I certainly don’t expect anything to happen today, it does seem there is an FBI/DHS memo outlining intelligence about some militia groups talking -yes, just talking- about plans for the Capitol today.

Now, if you don’t think that’s cause for heightened security, ask yourself if we intercepted Islamic terrorists messages about attacking the Capitol today, or any day, shouldn’t we take some precautions?

The news is always sensationalized, since that sells. And they are businesses, after all. But being sensibly alert about chatter with a specific date is just sound security posture.

MarineDad61

LC,
SOURCES of chatter are key.
As for international terrorists, it’s clear and obvious.

As for the current round of
possible potential maybe domestic terrorists,
we are NOT told which Mommy’s basements and/or garages.

Wait, there’s MORE. (ShamWow!)
IF the current maybe chatter were isolated to actual businesses, organizations,
or even networks of idiots with certainly,
the FBI and various State Police could have had them all long busted, cuffed, and hung out there in the media for public view.
But there’s none of that, is there?
Did I miss any?

LC

I agree that the quality and number of sources are key – but people tend to err on the side of an overabundance of caution after getting burned. The previous incident at the Capitol left five dead and quite a few injured, not to mention a whole lot of finger-pointing. If you catch wind after that of another possible event in the same vein, don’t you think it’s likely damn near anyone is going to be extra cautious?

As for the FBI and State Police rounding people up for chatter… for what, exactly? Do you think most of these people say, “Let’s go kill so-and-so in the Capitol..”? No, of course not, they’re dumb, but not that dumb – they talk in vague terms. Hence, ‘chatter’, not ‘direct threat’. You can’t arrest a bunch of Americans for saying, “Let’s grab our guns and go to DC…”, but you can arrest them once they’re there, taking action.

All in all, I wouldn’t be surprised if this were mostly trolling with a couple of keyboard-warrior true believers, with the latter having no plans to actually do something.

But, it’s the role of the security apparatus of the US to take threats seriously. FBI and DHS felt this was serious enough to write a memo. Pelosi, for her part, apparently says the delay in House actions today have nothing to do with this, and she’s not worried. I trust her about as far as I can throw an elephant, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what she says, or what the news -seeking sensationalism!- says, it’s that the people who deal with threats routinely are taking it seriously enough to be alert, but not mobilize additional assets.

Which, frankly, seems like the kind of response one should desire from them. If there were more intelligence, they’d do more. Low-risk threat gets a nominal response. News at eleven?

MarineDad61

LC,
News at 11?
You betcha.
Fox will say 1 thingy,
and CNN (and the others) will say 4 other thingies.
Idiot talk faces will pile on.
Joy Reid, anyone?
Or that Maddow person thingy?
Ugh.

LC

Yeah, I guess I don’t expect rational perspective from the media. My point is that the national security pieces are doing what they’re supposed to be doing – reacting to a threat with the level of specificity it seems to warrant. In essence, keep your heads on a swivel, but otherwise carry on.

Fox can paint this as Antifa impersonating militia sorts and MSNBC can say it’s Trump himself driving up in a car from Florida to body-slam Pelosi – that’s just the media being the media. It’s pretty immaterial to the security aspects.

LC

I think that’s a fair concern… you can reasonably make an argument that the troops should’ve been sent home back in January, sure.

And this can’t go on indefinitely, clearly, but a specific date in chatter gets treated more seriously than general noise. Once we reached late-February, and the troops were still there, it gets damn near indefensible to suggest removing them ahead of today’s date, given the potential threat.

Hopefully, in another week or so, they start to head home.

LC

I don’t think this is a new normal. Sure, there will always be new chatter, but not of this sort of specificity and volume, and it’s not justification enough for endless deployment. In fact, Michigan has already said its Guard is coming home[1], but USCP has also asked for a sixty-day extension of around 2200 of the current ~5200 Guard presence[2].

So while my ‘week or so’ may be slightly optimistic, I’ll make you a bet – by June, we’ll see fewer than 1K left. Hopefully far fewer, if any, but that’s less than 1/5th of the current number. Loser has to drink light beer and say something nice about AOC / Trump, depending on which you dislike more.

“– reacting to a threat with the level of specificity it seems to warrant.”

After 20 years in A’stan, “weapons of mass destruction” in Iraq, Libya, Syria, …. and, of course, the economic and military colossus that was the USSR, you actually think our national security apparatus has more credibility than the media?

LC

This isn’t about whether, as an institution, they’ve got a flawless track record.. it’s about how you respond to a potential threat.

Would you prefer they assume a threat with some specificity and magnitude is false, and simply not do anything? Or, you know, do their job and take reasonable precautions, even if it’s ultimately nothing?

KoB

They want to add 900 more Capital Police and build up a standing QRF, on standby 24/7/365 @ 130mil $ per year.

Would this be the Brownshirts or the new Gestapo? The particularly want more “Intelligence Officers.”

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/capitol-riot-task-force-lt-gen-honore

LC

Once again, I don’t think the size of the force is the question here. Should they treat a specific threat with enough volume as serious, or should they just shrug their shoulders and ignore it?

Professional security sorts should definitely do the former.

I’m not in favor of the Guard being there, I’m saying they were there, and reacted how I’d god damn hope security professionals would react. Increased alertness, but not DEFCON 1 level with weapons drawn.

Ignoring a threat that’s borderline credible, even if unlikely, is not a good look for national security types.

Forest Bondurant
