Democrats want to remove Biden’s sole authority to launch nuclear weapons
So it’s not just Republicans that question the mental faculties of Ol’ Joe “Hands” Biden. Dozens of House Democrats have signed a letter asking Biden to relinquish sole nuclear authority, which he has as commander-in-chief of the nation’s military. Frankly, I expected this sort of thing in the Trump Era, but it’s a little surprising that the Democrats here are saying the quiet part out loud.

About three dozen House Democrats have signed a letter asking President Biden to renounce his sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, according to reports.
A promise from the president to give up his nuclear capabilities as commander in chief could take the same power away from future presidents.
“Vesting one person with this authority entails real risks,” the letter from Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., and obtained by Politico reads. “Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.”
Panetta’s office did not immediately respond to an inquiry from Fox News. The congressman said in a Monday tweet that he is “calling on” Biden “to install checks [and] balances in our nuclear command-and-control structure.”
The letter continues: “While any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering a nuclear attack, there is no requirement to do so. The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war. Under the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes.”
Democrats offered some alternatives to sole nuclear authority, such as requiring the vice president and House speaker to agree with a launch order from the president before it is executed, according to Politico.
More at the source and at Newsmax. I don’t know why the Democrats are of the belief that any president can just launch a nuclear war on a whim. I guess when you believe that the military is made up of a bunch of simple-minded drones who will follow any order without thought, that’s what you think.

Soooo Pelosi is adding another Presidential Power to the Speaker of the House’s plate. Will then knock off both Kamala and Joe and just say “well I have the ability to rule from here, so do we need another President?”
The House’s job is to create laws, the Senate’s job is to approve funding and to provide checks on the House. The President’s (Executive) job is to manage government and to set a budget. Have any of these folks done their job in the last 12 or more years?
Let’s do the counselling and send these government employees packing for wasting our Oxygen and destroying our country!

First, I do not think there needs to be a change. There are enough checks and balances now in our current Command and Control Structure, to keep Biden in check. This is a ploy by Pelosi to put her foot in the door and make it harder for future Presidents to run the country.

I agree completely, having seen the NCA from the bottom up and the (almost) top down. The Dims have absolutely no concept of how a launch order is formulated and executed, except from what they saw in “graphic novels” and movies.
Pelosi just wants bragging rights, IMO. And besides, she’s almost as senile as Xiden anyway.

I did a little “google-fu” and found this.
GOLD CODES (launch codes):
“For an extra level of security, the list of codes on the card includes codes that have no meaning, and therefore the president must MEMORIZE where on the list the correct code is located.”
With Slo Joe, that in itself could be a problem.
Seems that this was also brought up a while back (2017-2018) about changing the procedure of protocols to launch missiles:
“Safeguards include the Markey-Lieu Bill, which would prohibit the president from employing nuclear weapons first unless Congress has declared war and provided specific authorization for their use; the Betts/Waxman solution, which would add the secretary of defense and attorney general to the chain of command to certify that a presidential launch order is authentic and legal; and adoption of a no-first-use policy, which would draw a red line that, if crossed, makes the president accountable and even impeachable.”
Short of a full-on attack by one of the few nuclear powers remaining, it’s hard to imagine any scenario where nuclear weapons would be a viable option, so this seems more about status-seeking by Congress than anything else.
If, for whatever reason, Russia or China were to attack the US with nuclear weapons, it would make sense for it to be a “decapitating” attack where the C&C of the nation would be the number one target anyway, so I’m not sure where you’d go in the smoking radioactive hole that was once the Capitol to find the right people to sign off on the order to retaliate.
Which makes this whole exercise a little bit silly.
The whole reason for the ‘football’ was that an attack could come FAST and gathering a consensus could be impossible and fatal. A minutes-away attack can’t wait for a ‘meeting Thursday, be there, it’s real important’ response.
Either they are admitting Biden is incompetent or they are projecting like the “I can’t control my temper so no one should own a gun” types.

IIRC flight time of an ICBM is about 20 some odd minutes from them to us. You can’t place a phone call in that time frame, much less have a Committee to make a life and death decision…with a nation’s life at stake. One thing that has kept our foreign enemies at bay was the knowledge of the Clear and Present Danger of Mutually Assured Destruction, with basically one person giving the Launch Order.
30 minutes or so from Russia or China with typical ICBM.
9 minutes for a low-trajectory shot from off our coast, from a sub or ship.

There is an unwillingness on the left to accept that we live in a world where annihilation at the hands of our enemies is mere minutes away- seconds, if we do not remain vigilant in all domains.
The fact is we have nuclear armed enemies that are capable of and more than willing to destroy the ‘essential nation’ so they could re-write the world order in their favor if they could emerge intact.
Since that is our reality we have to maintain not only an assured second strike capability, but a credible first strike capability, and that requires POTUS to have sole launch authority.
