Manchin on a Trump Impeachment

| January 13, 2021

Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.)

Ever the political waffler, Senator Joe faces an Impeachment Conundrum: vote the Dem party line and risk the ire of his constituents. The fact there is zero chance of Trump actually being impeached and convicted will doubtless be considered. He’ll be given a bye after the appropriate amount of political sausage has been ground.

WV Sen. Manchin Claims Impeachment of Trump ‘So Ill Advised’ & Votes to Convict ‘Aren’t There’

Seth M. Griffin

Charleston, WV — West Virginia US Sen., Joe Manchin, spoke with Fox News on Monday evening that the move by House Democrats to impeach President Donald Trump was “ill-advised.” Moreover, Manchin said the votes to convict and remove the president in the Senate are not there.

During the interview, Bret Bair asked Manchin whether there were the votes in the Senate to convict and remove Trump for allegedly inciting a riot that resulted in people storming into the US Capital Wednesday of last week.

“I don’t see any of that, because there will be 48, still 48 Democrats, until we seat Warnock and Sen. Ossoff,” Manchin said. “So, until that happens, you need 67 votes. I think, my arithmetic, that means we have 19 Republicans. I don’t see that. And I think the House should know that also. We have been trying to send that message over. They know the votes aren’t there. You would think that they would do that.”

“I think this is so ill-advised for Joe Biden to be coming in, trying to heal the country, trying to be the president of all the people, when we’re going to be so divided and fighting again. Let the judicial system do its job,” he continued. “And then, we’re a country of the rule of law. That’s the bedrock of who we are. Let that take its place. Let the investigations go on. Let the evidence come forth, and then we will go forward from there. There’s no rush to do this impeachment now. We can do it later if they think it’s necessary.”

So the impeachment of Trump is, in the Senator’s mind rather like an assault weapons ban. Another approach he can’t support “…right now.” Manchin opposes assault weapons ban

Let it go, Dems. Let Trump finish his term. It’s less than a week at this point, anyway.

Seriously, you won. If you really wanted peace, you’d have Biden pardon Trump. It’s the least you can do to prove that you’re not the vindictive assholes you look to be at this point. Then agree to have a neutral party do a full audit of the 2020 Presidential election. If it shows Trump winning, then Harris needs to resign. That way, Biden can appoint Trump VP and resign, thus making Trump President again.

There I go again…proving myself too nice and trusting to be in politics. But I can still dream.

  3. MI Ranger says:

Wait, what is he talking about doing it later? Can you still impeach someone who is not in office anymore? Actually I guess impeachment has already been done (or as we speak)…that’s sort of like the indictment. The trial is what he is talking about.

So what can a Senate trial do to a former President after he has left office? Make him ineligible to run again? Boy, won’t he regret locking up Hillshady after that!!

    • MI Ranger says:

I mean not locking her up.

    • penguinman000 says:

The short answer is maybe, the Constitution does not explicitly spell out a time frame impeachment may occur in. The only outcome would be he would no longer be able to hold any elected office.

      • Hondo says:

Minor quibble: while disqualification from holding any future Federal office is a potential penalty for someone impeached by the House who has been convicted by the Senate, disqualification from holding future Federal office is not mandatory. It is only imposed if the Senate elects to do so in addition to removing the convicted individual from office.

For an example, see Alcee Hastings. He was a Federal Judge who was impeached, tried, and removed from office for bribery and racketeering in 1989. However, while the Senate removed him from office, it did not bar him from holding Federal office in the future. Hastings was later elected to the House of Representatives in 1992.

Sidebar: Hastings had been acquitted in a 1983 criminal trial preceding his impeachment when his co-conspirator refused to testify against him, opting to go to prison instead. Clintoon pardoned the co-conspirator on his last day in office.

        • penguinman000 says:

Yeah, this is one of those areas of the Constitution that is seriously gray.

My assumption is if they can ramrod the impeachment through their going to give him the full ride. Of course I know what they say about assumptions, so….

The only case that comes close to fitting the bill for what they are attempting to do with Trump is Belknap. And that case doesn’t resemble Trump’s circumstance in the least.

What strange times we live in.

    • xyzzy says:

      There’s historical precedent, viz.:

This is why Biden needs to pardon Trump – to end this bullshit and ensure that Trump can enjoy his retirement. He’s earned it.

      • Mason says:

He won’t. Biden has no reason to actually do anything more than give lip-service to “unity”. He made it a whole day after last week’s riot before he compared two sitting Republican senators to Joseph Goebbels.

        • xyzzy says:

If Biden had any decency in him at all, he’d pardon Trump.

          Oh, wait…Biden is an asshole.

          Never Mind.

  4. Devtun says:

Like I said, congress creatures who vote to oust the POTUS better succeed…or resign if the president is acquitted. This nonsense would stop if lawmakers risk losing their jobs.

  5. Commissar says:

First of all, Trump has a 100% chance of being impeached if he does not resign in the next few hours. The impeachment vote happens today and it will pass the house.

Second, Trump also has a 100% chance of being removed from office within a week if he does not resign or choke on a cheeseburger first.

Third, the best thing that could possibly happen for Trump right now is a negotiated resignation with a Pence pardon.

Fourth, the second best thing that could happen to him is an almost immediate impeachment vote in the Senate.

Here is why: Republicans would control the process. There would be no time to call witnesses. No time for democrats to methodically lay out the case. No time to investigate the behind the scenes communications. No for a parade of witness testimony. No time to incorporate evidence being gathered from 100s of current investigations into January 6th and the events that led up to it. And a vote to remove would be seen as a betrayal of a sitting president by his MAGAts (still the republicans base),…

He would likely not be removed and it would be interpreted as a acquittal, a “not guilty” vote by his cult of Q d’eTwats.

However, An impeachment trial after he leaves offices is going to be Democrat controlled,, methodical, thorough, have plenty of witnesses, plenty of evidence, and would have much less political cost for republicans voting “yes“ since the only result would be Trump being banned from future office which most republican politicians and almost all their corporate donors want.

So people thinking that McConnell delaying the senate trial is a “win” for a Trump are idiots.

McConnell hates Trump. Mitch absolutely wants to break Trump’s grip on the party. And he absolutely wants to make sure a Trump never runs again…

But Mitch also knows that when he takes a shot at the MAGAt king he can’t miss.

Mitch wants the trial to be methodical, thorough, effective, final, and the end of Trump’s political career.

        How is this equivelant ?

Clinton was a corrupt shitbag who should never had been elected…

But he got a blow job and lied about it. That was why he was impeached.

Trump didn’t just lie, and he does so continuously, but he committed a massive fraud to try to steal an election and incited a mob to insurrection and to occupy the Capitol causing a police officer to be beaten to death, several injured, and put the lives of congress and congressional, staff at risk.

All to despotically ignore the constitution, ignore the will of the people, and cling to power.

          • Commissar says:

There was an investigation of Clinton.

Clinton did not obstruct the investigation.

            Clinton testified during the investigation.

And the reason for the impeachment was petty and not sufficient grounds to throw out a president…he was disbarred for the lie though.

There is zero equivalence to what Trump tired to pull since November…

You attempt to try to hand wave this as “Democrats are doing this because they hate trump” and “that makes them hypocrites because they called out Republican for hating clinton”….

            It nonsense.

            Yes, democrats hate Trump.

But Trump’s actions are absolutely impeachable. In fact impeachment is a civic duty given his actions.

By the way, I also think impeaching a Clinton was correct. Removing him from office was not. They found him guilty of the crimes but did not think the crimes justified removal.

            Trump’s actions do.

            • Hondo says:

Actually, dipstick, Clintoon was indeed impeached for obstruction of justice:

Once again, you refuse to let facts get in the way of a convenient misrepresentation of reality.

              • Mason says:

That he thinks Clinton didn’t obstruct the investigation is hilarious. I couldn’t read past that point. It’s the whole fucking reason Clinton was impeached! Well, that and suborning perjury.

                • Commissar says:

                  The obstruction was the lie.

                  It was a single act.

And lying about infidelity is no where near the equivalent of what Trump pulled both during the Mueller investigation and over the last few months.

The fact that you are using Clinton being a dirtbag with the integrity of a used car salesman as an attempt to deflect and draw a moral equivalence to what Trump has done is ridiculous.

But I expect nothing less from a partisan propagandist like you.

              • Commissar says:

He was impeached for obstruction for the lie.

The lying under oath and the obstruction of justice were the same single act…

And I think impeachment was appropriate for that act.

Trump obstructed justice on ten separate occasions; detailed in the Mueller report. And he also gave instructions to subordinates to obstruct justice and, in fact, ordered the entire executive branch to obstruct justice….

And none of that equivelent to what he did since November.

The fact that you keep trying to bring Clinton into this makes it clear that you have no defense for the bullshit Trump pulled.

                • Hondo says:

Nice try at deflection. You’re the one who was discussing Clintoon instead of responding to ninja’s question regarding Pelosi – which you still haven’t addressed.

My statement was made to disprove your “Clintoon did not obstruct” claim, and for no other reason. It stands alone; Trump’s actions you continue to misrepresent are irrelevant to what I wrote. I in no way equated Clintoon’s conduct with Trump’s; you’re the one who keeps doing that.

You know all of that, too. Here you’re simply obfuscating in an attempt to conceal the fact that you’ve been caught dissembling yet again.

Have you even read the Articles of Impeachment against Clintoon, doofus?

The 3rd article of impeachment against Clintoon includes roughly 10 different, independent acts that occurred over a period of roughly 2 months. Those acts included suborning perjury on the part of prospective witnesses, concealing evidence, attempts at witness tampering, and knowingly filing/allowing to be filed false and/or misleading depositions to prevent relevant questioning. Those are all classic obstruction of justice acts.

The text of that article of impeachment is in the link I provided. It proves you’re talking out of your butt here.

        • USMC Steve says:

Yes, Clinton was a corrupt shitbag. No, he got impeached for several federal felonies, such as perjury, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice. And the dems countered by saying simply that those federal felonies were not high crimes and misdemeanors.

And the only election stealing was done by the social democrats. And the evidence was clearly there to prove it if the judges involved had done their fucking jobs for once. That includes the Nine Old Pussies on the Potomac.

What is disgusting is that you are so fucking brainwashed, and potentially hold a military commission while being a seditionist.

You got it backwards. The Democrats want a quick trial. This is worse than their last impeachment. It’s based entirely on imagined motives behind innocuous words.

Several Democrats the last four years have used far more incendiary language.

      • Commissar says:

No, not all the democrats do. They want him out of the Oval Office as soon as possible and they would hope republicans would have the courage to do the right thing,

But since most republicans in Congress are cowards…

The 25th in the short run, followed by a long trial and investigation after the 20th is the best course of action.

Democrats want him out of office because he is a clear and present danger to the republic. He has continuously attempted to overthrow the results of an election and install himself as a despot.

And he won’t stop lying about the election.

They were hoping Pence and the cabinet would remove him temporarily until the 20th. And gave him almost a week to do it.

But they know that republicans will use any excuse to avoid voting for impeachment, a rushed trial gives them that excuse.

A long and thorough trial is going to be devastating to a Trump and any republican that still votes against impeachment.

        • UpNorth says:

We’re supposed to take the word of a failed commenter who doesn’t even fucking know that perjury and suborning perjury is exactly what the term “high crimes and misdemeanors” means. Bill should have been removed just for that, and you know it.

A long and thorough trial is going to be devastating to a Trump and any republican that still votes against impeachment.

No. It won’t. It’ll be terrible for the Democrats because they have nothing. Knowing Schumer though, he won’t bother with an actual trial and will just bring it to a vote once he’s in charge. Simple lynch mob behavior. It’ll be done under the guise of “Now we put that unpleasantness behind us, we can get to work on changing the country!”

It used to be against the grain to go after your political opponent and seek imprisonment.

However, since Obama successfully brought Chicago-style politics to the national level, things changed forever. That is one thing that I feel that Obama was successful at doing.

To those not familiar – “Chicago-style politics” is a phrase used to characterize a supposedly offensive tough, “take-no-prisoners” or “hardball” approach to politics.

Stated another way – destroy your enemy and all that support your enemy.

Now the Dems need to return the favor by letting Trump retire. The fact that they won’t says a lot about how corrupt they are.

      • USMC Steve says:

And if he had, along with some of the Obama criminals, this stolen election bullshit most likely would not have happened. Until the social democrats find out actions have consequences, severe and painful consequences, they will NEVER stop.

  7. Commissar says:

A short form of what I posted above:

Impeachment is a process, not a result. As soon as the house votes “yay” this afternoon Trump has been impeached. So there is near 100% chance.

What do you think is better for Trump?

A rushed Republican controlled senate trial this week with no time for witnesses or evidence?

Or a methodical Democrat controlled senate Trial in two weeks with witnesses, evidence, and new information derived from ongoing investigations.

Mitch delaying the senate Trial until after the inauguration is not a win for Trump.

    • Mike Gunns says:

The only reason, the only reason the Dems want to impeach trump is because they are scared to death that if he was able to and did run again in 2024, he would win. Then it would be Katy bar the door for the unlawful Dems and deep state.

And he lied to despotically cling to power.

If you were actual patriots you would support impeaching him.

But as I have been saying for years:

You put party loyalty over loyalty to our republic.

You put loyalty to Trump over loyalty to our republic.

Just like in the “peaceful” BLM and Fagtifa protests, a fraction of a fraction of protesters went too far. But it is “catch and release” for the leftist protesters, some of whom have been arrested multiple times at different venues and it is lock ’em up and throw away the key for those protesters on the right who were arrested.

The left’s hypocrisy and two tiered justice system is going to bite them in the ass before it’s over with. You’ve obviously picked your side. Now you’ll have to live with the future consequences. Good luck with that.

      • Commissar says:

The entire reason for the violence was his lie that the Election was stolen.

His speech regurgitated that lie multiple times.

Knowing it was that lie the was driving the continued violence.

And he retracted his speech later while continuing the lie.

        • Mason says:

That you think questioning the results of the election is treason is interesting, since you spent the last four years trying to convince us that the 2016 election was questionable.

You claim to have been a cop, so you should know that inciting a riot requires overt intent. Like when that kid’s dad in Ferguson told the crowd to “Burn this bitch down!” That’s inciting a riot, not having a political disagreement about the integrity of an election. Your side disputed the integrity of the 2016 election for the last four freaking years!

          • Hondo says:

That you think questioning the results of the election is treason is interesting, since you spent the last four years trying to convince us that the 2016 election was questionable.

Interesting, Mason? More like “pure, rank hypocrisy” IMO.

Then again, Commissar Wumao (五毛) here has never let the truth stand in the way of his Leftist propaganda commentary. Hypocrisy and misrepresentation of reality are simply “business as usual” for him – just like it was for the propaganda organs of the former USSR and still is today for the official press of the PRC.

    • Hondo says:

One officer was beaten to death…by MAGA

Please explain how a slogan can beat anyone to death.

Answer: it can’t. It’s the idiot fringe that does such things on either side of the political “asile”.

So unless you have a reliable source that indicates the POTUS personally advocated violence by his supporters, how about you simply shut up – dipstick. Your misrepresentations of fact and parroting of Leftist propaganda were old three years ago. In fact, many of us remember hearing virtually the same kind of crap from the former USSR (and the PRC) when you were still in diapers.

And, if you can: please explain how the actions of a few on the idiot fringe of the political right differ from those of Antifa and BLM we’ve seen for the past few months? Seems to me all of those were examples of the use of organized violence because of perceived injustice to achieve a political end.

You’ve openly supported both ANTIFA and BLM in your comments here, and have claimed to have provided at least one of those groups logistical support (e.g., medical). So: other than they’re your political opponents, how are the actions of the numbnuts idiots who stormed the Capitol significantly different from theirs?

Let me make it very clear that I AM NOT DEFENDING any of those three groups (BLM, ANTIFA, and the Capitol rioters). IMO, all deserve to be in prison for organizing and/or participating in a riot.

But I really would like to hear your justification for political violence by the political Left – and, more importantly, why it doesn’t apply to similar activities by the political Right. Because the best I can tell, the idiot fringe of the political Right has now done exactly the same thing as BLM and ANTIFA have for the past few months. And you’re obviously simply aghast that your political opponents would use such means as part of a political protest.

It is not a slogan. It is a cult.

And Trump’s lies about the election were why the crowd marched on the Capitol. He continued the lies throughout the siege. And after.

Already some of those arrested are admitting they did it because Trump wanted them to. They did because Trump told them the election was stolen.

You relentless defense of Trump is so pathetic, disingenuous, and disgusting.

        • Hondo says:

Excuse me, dipstick – but saying you believe you got robbed is NOT the same as advocating violence. Equating the two merely proves you’re either a dissembling political shill or a moron.

As someone who’s allegedly a former LEO, you should know the above full well. Ergo, you’re dissembling. Again.

And I notice you sidestepped the, “Why is it OK when ANTIFA/BLM riot, but not when my political opponents do it?” question. Well? You gonna answer?

I didn’t think so. You don’t have either the sesos or the cojones to attempt to answer that one.

Oh, and I’m not defending Trump above. I’m merely countering your misrepresentations of fact with truth – and asking a few pointed questions which you seem to be avoiding.

        • SFC D says:

Answer. The. Question. Here, I’ll repeat it, slowly.

“But I really would like to hear your justification for political violence by the political Left – and, more importantly, why it doesn’t apply to similar activities by the political Right. Because the best I can tell, the idiot fringe of the political Right has now done exactly the same thing as BLM and ANTIFA have for the past few months. And you’re obviously simply aghast that your political opponents would use such means as part of a political protest.”

          What say you, Commissar?

          • Hondo says:

Don’t hold your breath, D. He has neither the sesos nor the cojones to attempt to answer the question.

          • Commie-Tsar says:

Let me masticate, obfuscate and masturbate while I formulate an answer to your question… I love being an anti-social socialist!

          • Commie-Tsar's 3d Thumb says:

I hesitate to articulate, in fear I may fear deviate from the true course of rectitude. In short, I am a leftist-socialist fucktard and don’t know because I wasn’t in class that day to jot down the talking points from my professor who covered the topic.

        • Hondo says:

It is not a slogan. It is a cult.

Bull. That’s an acronym for a slogan. You’re holding an entire demographic group responsible for something they did not do and had no control over.

That’s precisely what the KKK did in the Jim Crow era. “What fine friends and role models you have, Comrade.”

And yes, the last sentence above is sarcasm.

Now that they have gotten rid of the one that was in the way, they’ll be coming for us next. We, The People, were their Targets all along.

For those that haven’t read thebesig’s comments/answers to C2show and spapos, you need to go back and read/comprehend them.

    • Commissar says:

      Nobody is coming for you.

Your entire incoherent system of beliefs is driven by fear of “others”.

Too much ignorant spinelessness for someone who is supposed to be a sentient vertebrate.

  11. Commissar says:

As you know, Trump has officially been impeached.

    Trial is next.

I hope they wait until after the 20th so there can be a long, methodical, and thorough trail and any evidence discovered during the course of ongoing federal investigations can be used during the trial…

I am thankful Mitch is delaying this trial.

I was worried that they would rush it and the feckless cowards in the Republican Party would use the rushed vote and lack of evidence as a justification vote against removal and the right wing would spin it as an acquittal.

    • Deckie says:

They won’t try a private citizen.

There’s no time for a fair trial at this point anyway, and your desire for one shows what a monkey brained shit sipping traitor you are. Pack your shit and go to Venezuela you clown, I hear Maduro is hiring bodyguards. With UCB on your resume you’re sure to get picked.

I really think they’re going to keep him on life support like they did with RBG. He’s just a puppet. They’ll limp him along through two full terms if they can, so then Kamala can be the experienced statesman. It’s also long past time for a half-Jamaican, half-Indian, raised in Canada, Madame President.
