Happy Birthday Devil Dogs!

| November 10, 2020

245 years young, here’s to many more.

Presidential Message on the 245th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps

As Commander in Chief, I proudly join our Nation in wishing the United States Marine Corps a happy 245th birthday.

Officially established by the Second Continental Congress on November 10, 1775, the Marine Corps has protected our sovereignty in the air, on land, and at sea. Our Marines have led the charge for freedom and justice in defense of our constitutional republic and its founding principles.

Since they first shed blood for the cause of freedom during the Revolutionary War, Marines, true to their creed, have never wavered in their faithfulness. The distinct scarlet and gold Battle Colors of the United States Marine Corps symbolize its history of both unmatched prowess on the battlefield and solemn sacrifice in service to our Nation. Every brave man and woman who dons the Marine Corps uniform carries this legacy forward.

With steadfast honor, courage, and commitment, Marines have swiftly and decisively risen to the occasion to secure victory, no matter the task. This January marks the 30th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, in which Marines successfully carried out one of the most consequential offensive attacks in the history of modern warfare. Throughout the Gulf War, these brave warriors never faltered, a reflection of their long-standing devotion to pressing forward until every battle is won.

Today, as we celebrate the men and women who valiantly defend our country as United States Marines, we also honor our heroic Marine veterans, and we solemnly remember those Marines who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. We will always cherish and honor their memory.

The First Lady and I send our thoughts and prayers to all members of our Armed Forces and their families. May God bless the Marine Corps, and may He continue to bless the United States of America.

Semper Fidelis!

Happy Birthday, DEVIL DOGS!

Also – Today would also have been the birthdays for my mother and father AND their wedding anniversary. I hope and pray that they are together again.

245 years of pure hell, death and destruction! Continue to march!

Happy Birthday to our Marine brethren.

Happy Birthday (again) Devil Dogs, you don’t look a day over 240. Use your crayons wisely, you may be on short rations soon.

And Happy Birthdays and Anniversary to the Parents of our very own HMCS(FMF). Senior, I’m sure that they are sitting together at the Marine Dining Out Dinner Table in Valhalla, being toasted by all for adding another Warrior to the Ranks.

Thanks for the kind words…

Indian Red was the best flavor.

Happy Birthday, USMC. The senior US military service – the US Army – sends its best regards.

Saw this in the article. This just gave me back a lot of hope in the middle of some really screwed up times (not even referring to the election.)

►From the article. . .
Although Cashe would be the first black soldier to be awarded the Medal of Honor in the post-9/11 wars, his older sister Kasinal Cashe White told reporters earlier this month that this award has nothing to do with race.

“I won’t allow anybody to make it a race thing because he did what he did, not because he was black,” she said. “He did what he did because he was a soldier and loved his men. And they loved him in return. They reciprocated that.”
►End quote.

If more people had this attitude, there would be a lot less strife in our country. The race pimps of the world wouldn’t have an audience and they would have to get a real job like the rest of us.

I got to work on trucks. My trucks were the first to roll into Kuwait and fuck up Saddam. BSSG-1 HOO RAHHH. Happy birthday my Marines.

11B-Mailclerk

The Deuce-and-a-half trucks, and the men who drove them, were a primary instrument of Victory in WW2.

Hondo

Yep. “Beans, bullets, and bandaids” at the supply depot aren’t particularly useful. And they don’t get moved to those who need them by unicorns or faeries.

11B-Mailclerk

Absent US trucks and logistic support, the Soviets would have lost everything west of the Ural Mountains.

The “deuce” also moved troops, rapidly.

I retired just last year so being on the outside, as it were, is still pretty new to me. Days like this (and the date I went to boot camp, for example) bring up bitter sweat memories. It did suck – all military organizations do in ways – but it was the also the best times. I fortunately had a supportive and loving wife who kept the home fires burning and great kids waiting for me to get home.

So to my brothers, I say happy birthday! To my fellow vets of different services I say, thank you for all of the support – we literally couldn’t do it without you. Well, I guess we could, but we’d have to take C-130s and MTVRs every where and that would have been a big pain. . . 😉

In US Military history what was the only time(s) a Regular Army Divison was commanded by a Marine General Officer and which Division was it?

Fyrfighter

I forget which division, but I’m gonna say it was WWII, on Okinawa..

FuzeVT

You might be thinking of when General Smith fired General Smith at Peleliu. No Marine took over for that Army division, however. Did piss off a lot of Army brass (understandably)!!!

USAFRetired

On Okinawa it was a Corps briefly when General Buckner was killed.

No the answer is the 2nd Infantry Division in France during WWI,

Twice during World War I the division was commanded by US Marine Corps generals, Brigadier General Charles A. Doyen and Major General John A. Lejeune (after whom the Marine Corps Camp in North Carolina is named), the only time in U.S. military history when Marine Corps officers commanded an Army division.

The 2nd Division consisted of 2 Infantry Brigades and an artlillery Brigade. The Marines provided one of the two Infantry Brigades, and unlike Okinawa where it was a short term thing when an Aviator (Lt Gen Geiger commanded.)

The original Marine commanding the Division BGen Doyen was one of the early casualties of the Spanish Flu pandemic and was repalced by Gen LeJeune in July 1918 who served as the Division Commander until the Division returned to the States in 1919

FuzeVT

Without looking it up, here is my recollection.

During WWI you had the Marine Provisional Brigade with the 5th and 6th Marine regiments in it. They also had 2nd Infantry Division in the command. This is why you have the Indian head as the symbol for the 6th Marine Regiment today. I can’t remember the commander.

I’m going to commit to this answer and hit post. Then I’ll see how I did.

I know that General Geiger took over after General Buckner got killed on Okinawa. He was the only Marine to command a numbered army. He was replaced five days later, however.

FuzeVT

Darn it! I was thinking it was General Lejeune, but I didn’t commit – it was. . .

►On 28 July 1918, Marine Corps Major General Lejeune assumed command of the 2nd Division and remained in that capacity until August 1919, when the unit returned to the US. The division went on to win hard-fought victories at Soissons and Blanc Mont. Finally the Indianhead Division participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive which ended any German hope for victory. On 11 November 1918 the Armistice was declared, and the 2nd Division entered Germany, where it assumed occupation duties until April 1919. 2nd Division returned to U.S. in July 1919.
