Hamilton and Burr’s Dueling Pistols

Manager, employee fire shots at attempted robbers at Detroit business

The manager and employee at a Detroit business were able to stop an attempted robbery Tuesday afternoon.

Police say three suspects attempted to rob a local business in the 9500 block of Dexter. The suspects entered the store and assaulted an employee. The business’s owner, a 47-year-old man, saw what was happening and produced a weapon. Police say both victims then fired shots at the three suspects, striking two of them. One suspect is still at large. The other two were arrested and treated at a local hospital.

Gun-wielding man in Roseville basketball complex fatally shot by CPL holder, say police

By David Komer
A deadly shooting left a man fatally wounded after a basketball game Tuesday.

Roseville police say a fight at Midwest Athletics Basketball City at 1640 Eastland Street, led to a man leaving and coming back with a gun. When he pointed the firearm at the person he had fought with, a second man with a valid concealed pistol license, intervened. After an exchange of gunfire, police say the suspect was seriously injured and was pronounced dead at the scene just before 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Family of the victim claims that there was one shooter who left after an altercation on the basketball court, returned, and gunned down their relative – conflicting with the police version of the story. They say the victim did not have weapon at the time of the shooting and was a CPL holder.

Maybe part of employee training should be more range time. That would make our own Wilted Willy happy. We coulda had us a trifecta DRT today. Oh well, a WRT 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

“…gunned down their relative-conflicting with the police version…” Guess his life didn’t matter. And I’ll leave it at that.

Cool dueling pistols and linky. ‘pears like one was modified for percusion from flintlock, not an uncommon thing. Making it left handed is, unless of course, it’s the effect of that reversed glass image struck from the tintype. /s/ Too bad more politicians aren’t settling their differences by duel any more…or by caning…or becoming puglists. Or just getting locked up in a jail like this. A linky to the jail that Burr was temporarily locked up in on his way back from capture in Georgia.

Was wondering how an 1804 duel was fought with a percussion gun not developed till years later, clearly someone was more interested in functionality than originality.

Most folks don’t know the the Code Duello required an -exchange- of shots, not simultaneous. Take turns.

Also that the pistols be loaded “smooth, single, and unset” – smoothbore, single slug, no use of set (hair) trigger. At the usual distance, hitting wasn’t certain.

You stood there and let the other guy fire. Then you took your turn.

The mutual exchange of misses by turn was a way for those who had cooled off to satisfy honor without bloodshed. You “fought” the duel, so Honor was satisfied, but no funerals.

Note also now widely unknown: dying by gutshot is a slow horrible rotting death unless a major blood vessel was hit. Looks like Burr really hated Hamilton.

Oh that “smooth, single, unset” thing? All kinds of cheats. Stack two ball, rifling ends well below the muzzle, trick “press forward to set” trigger mechanism. (Set was usually a second trigger) I have handled such “cheater” pistols. Some are -very- well concealed. Folks is folks.

Single set triggers are still made. Similar to double set triggers (pull one trigger to “set” the other as a hair trigger – watch “Quigley Down Under” for a demo) but with a single set trigger, you can either pull the trigger to the rear for it to fire normally, or press it forward to preset the trigger after which you have a hair trigger. CZ and SAKO, for example, still sell rifles with single set triggers today. Several companies make them for muzzleloaders.

We were on the other side of the Hudson I Jersey and we had lunch on the site that Hamilton was capped. They even made Hamiliton pocket watches. Got one or two Hamiliton movements but no cases. Hamiliton made their own size cases so a size 18 movement would fit a Waltham, Elgin, Illinois, Etc but not a size 18 Hamiliton movement and they are a little hard to get. Got a lot of stuff on Ebay though.
