Democrat Seattle Mayor shocked she has to reap what she’s sowed

| October 17, 2020

Demonize your cops, cut the department’s budget, and refuse to enforce law and order and cops will get the hint. They’re not stupid. They know when they’re not wanted and no supported. Who couldn’t see this coming? Apparently Jenny Durkan.

The Blaze reports;

Democratic Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan — who once called the police-free autonomous zone in her city a “block party” amid a “summer of love” — is now “deeply concerned” over the mass exodus taking place within the city’s police department.

What’s the situation?

KING-TV reported early Friday morning that a record number of officers had left the department in September, according to a new Seattle Budget Office report. The report noted that 39 officers and officers-in-training “separated” from the department while an additional 14 officers extended their leaves.

The exodus is part of a continuing trend that has resulted in at least 118 officers leaving the force this year, KTTH-TV reporter Jason Rant said. He added that “even this number is misleading” because “many officers are using their accrued sick time as they begin their escape to other agencies or wait for retirement.”

The total number of officers in the department now sits at just over 1,200, which the report noted is on par with police staffing levels in the early 1990s, even though the city’s population has grown 44% since then.

As a result, 911 call response times have been increasing and police investigative services have been crippled.

What’s she saying?

In a statement, Durkan called the levels of attrition “unprecedented,” yet doubled down on the re-imagination of community safety and calls for “community-based alternatives” to policing.

“We will continue to improve policing and reimagine community safety in Seattle by shifting some responses to community-based alternatives and civilian programs like Health One or Community Service Officers,” Durkan said. “But the City also needs a sufficient number of officers who can respond to the most urgent 911 calls in all parts of our city at any time of the day. We are losing an unprecedented number of officers, which makes it even more critical that we recruit and retain officers committed to reform and community policing that reflect the diversity and values of our city.”

A spokesperson for the mayor, Kelsey Nyland, added, “If we don’t act now, we’ll soon see undeniable impacts to 911 response times and investigative services. It could also impact the department’s ability to sustain the gains and meet the requirements of the federal consent decree.

“The Mayor is deeply concerned by the fact that some of our youngest officers — those who joined the department knowing it was under a federal consent decree — are leaving at an extremely high rate,” she continued. “These are the exact officers we want to keep as we transform the department. They’re the ones who entered the department with an emphasis on de-escalation training and community-based, constitutional policing.”

Anything else?

The exodus follows the City Council’s decision in September to override a mayoral veto and slash the city’s police budget, leading to the cutting of as many as 100 officer positions and the elimination of the Navigation Team, which cleared homeless encampments.

Durkan, who is in favor diverting police funds to social programs, only vetoed the measure because it lacked “the type of collaboration” she desired.

If the residents of Seattle don’t vote her and that council out, they get what they want. That they voted them in in the first place indicates this is the direction they wanted anyway.

This is exactly what everyone with a lick of common sense saw coming. Those cops that can leave, do. Those that can’t will just bide time until they can. Quality of service from those that are there will go down to near zero. New cops will come in, get trained, and leave the minute a better paying, more supportive city is hiring.

[…] With community support like that, it’s no wonder Seattle cops are leaving in droves. […]

Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;

Heh, they can resort to what the commies did behind the Iron Curtain and in Cuba and conscript a people’s militia made up of reliable party members, all backed up by a reliable stasi net of informants and enforcers. It worked for the East Germans…(sarc)

Oh, I forgot to mention that Durkie and the commie council will have to build a wall complete with watch towers and MG bunkers to prevent most of the shitattle subjects from fleeing, kinda like some wall I once heard about in Berlin…

Seattle getting the government it deserves.

Odd that the loss of LEOs is seemingly only happening in d’rat controlled sh^thole cities. And then city elected officials wonder why. Atlanta has lost an ass load too. My local bigger city has been bleeding off quality officers for years. And the smaller towns/counties have been snapping them up.

Speaking of shocked democrats…Yesterday President Trump had a last minute, thrown together tally in the bigger city. A little over 7K ticket holders were inside the venue. There were thousands more outside and along the route from AF1 to the Hanger. The Biden Bunch had a previously scheduled Riding With Biden parade. From the news article this morning; “…dozens of cars paraded thru downtown…” Looking at the video copy, there may have been maybe 30 cars so that is technically correct. And each vehicle had 1 or 2 people. You do the math.

Ex-PH2

What, no one on the sidewalk?

Hack Stone

Too dangerous, the sidewalks were covered in human feces from the local housing challenged demographic.

A Proud Infidel®™

Take one look at the Boat Parades for Trump as well as Bikers for trump, has anyone seen any of that for Biden other than maybe a few hipsters on a moped?

5JC

Nope, just happening faster there. The economy has been blazing hot under Trump and real wages are up for the first time since Bush Sr. Cities have not kept up and even cut benefits.

All the bad press doesn’t help.

Ex-PH2

So letting cops be cops and do their job properly was something she found offensive, because she didn’t want to offend anyone, and now she’s losing the very thing Seattle needs most….

Okay then.

Moving on.

If Mayor Durkan decides not to run again, or gets tossed out, she, her partner, and their two sons have options.

They can hunker down in their Seattle waterfront property, purchased for $4 million in 2015. They tore the original house down and built a new mansion worth $7.5 million to their specs.

Or they build a new mansion on their 70 acre Double Bluff Beach property on Whidbey Island, purchased in 2001 for $3.1 million and flee to there.

Cops leaving…… Go figure….
No sympathy here, these clowns have been voting d-rat for decades, give them the lesson, nice and hard….

As anyone who learns from history knows, Seattle is on the path that all socialism leads to.

Problem is, the damnfools who vote for this often move to capitalist areas for the better living, and not having learned a thing, being damnfools, they vote for the same shiite again. (e.g. Austin, TX)

If you treat somebody like shit and then are surprised when they say “Fuck this, I’m out,” you’re either an idiot or a domestic abuser, possibly both. Which option do you think applies to Durkan & co.?

Seems like these mayors thought “Demolition Man”‘s kinder, gentler police are the ideal, and stopped watching before Wesley Snipes broke out. “Maniac, step away from the machine” said firmly does NOT work in the real world.

Yup:

“New cops will come in, get trained, and leave the minute a better paying, more supportive city is hiring.”

Not so sure about that statement. Why would anyone interested in a law enforcement career even consider working for a city where the Mayor holds the Police in contempt, and they are not provided the resources to handle situations?

Maybe the Mayor should just hire the crew that was providing security in the “Autonomous Zone”, they seem to have a good rapport with the local population.

Penguinman000

The folks who won’t get hired or lateraled into other agencies end up in places like Seattle.

So the local government creates an agency swimming in the lowest common denominator of candidates, then will wonder why they have bad outcomes. I personally can’t wait to see them start hiring folks with criminal backgrounds.

A similar experiment was attempted with defunding under performing schools with no child left behind. That didn’t work out so well either.

A Proud Infidel®™

First I Say let them reap what they have sown and make the steaming shitheads who elected her STAY there, we don’t need those idiots migrating elsewhere and infesting other locations with their politics!

Its a race between Seattle and Portland to see which one becomes the New Detroit. The sad fact is no matter who makes it there first they will both be losers.

Of course, the youngest cops are leaving, Jenny. They have the most to lose because its a job with no future. Old timers will just tread water until retirement, mid-career cops will transfer to other agencies. The Emerald city is about to enter a 20-year period of darkness. You’ve built your legacy Miss Mayor, so enjoy your fame.

Let the voters there stew in the shit they created for themselves. When they move they bring their ideals with them and just try to ruin other normal neighborhoods.

Commissar

Mason is a old school propagandist. He won’t let facts get in the way of a good propaganda narrative. The Mayor did not cut the police budget. The mayor does not have the power to cut the police budget. The city council cut the budget. The mayor vetoed the city council budgets cuts. The city council overrided the mayor’s veto. This fight has gone on for months. The city council wants to cut police department expenditures from the $363.4 million in 2019 to $357.2 million in 2020. Compare that to the 2018 police expenditures of $331.3 million. Not exactly the dramatic devaluation of the importance of law enforcement in municipal recourse allocation as the right propaganda machine is trying to spin this. Officer on extended leave effects staffing, but it does not mean they have left the department, Most people have personnel on extended leave due to pandemic and various health concerns, family health concerns, and students not in school… The department lost 39 officers last month. Including three trainees. Losing three is not unusual. So we are talking about losing 36 officers. That is a lot. But it is. Or due to budget cuts that have not happened. If it is the “threat”:of budget cuts then they did the city council a favor. Since the council wanted to cut 100 officers and their current staffing is close to their goal. Keep in mind this is after the city council approved year over year budget increases 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. The city council does want to do dramatic cuts in 2021. The right wing blogosphere is calling it a “50% defunding of police”. The city council wants to reduce police expenditures in 2021 from $357M in 2020 to $281M in 2021. That is dramatic, but it is not exactly how the phrase “50% defunding of police” is being interpreted by right wing propaganda is it? Where the right is getting the “50% defunding of the police” Is the city want to maintain the same personnel levels, 1200, as their 2020 goal, but shift many of the current responsibilities… Read more »

Keep telling yourself the emperor has clothes. Any cop who has other options will take them. Any citizen who desires a career in law enforcement will seek employment somewhere they are not hated. And those who can’t defend themselves will be prey for the animals you have thrown in with.

Keep playing your fiddle while fires are literally being set. See what that gets you.

Oh wait, you’re a white guy who sucks at the government teat and doesn’t actually live in the neighborhoods being destroyed by your brethren. How’s it feel to be a modern day klansman telling minorities what to say and think on one hand (for their own good) while destroying their businesses and homes on the other (for their own good)?

If you were an actual officer instead of a drop out, you’d know that officers in some departments, when nearing retirement, either burn off their accrued sick time if the rate of pay isn’t the same rate when they actually retire, or, if a department has a “leave” policy, use that to keep from getting injured in their last year or years(usually 2). My department limited retirees to 120 hours of sick time that could be converted to cash, so I burned all of my sick time and comp time at the prevailing hourly rate down to the limits. So, I cashed in 120 hours of sick time and 200 hours of comp time when I retired.
As for the idiocy that the city got what they wanted when 39 officers left in a month, is 36, or even 30 officers leaving per month sustainable?
I’m pretty sure you weren’t an officer long enough to get the varnish off of your badge.

Penguinman000

I especially like how he glosses over how significant it is to lose a recruit in the academy(especially internal academies). The process to get to that point is lengthy and expensive. He glosses over it as if it means nothing.

Just like he thinks other businesses will spring up, he thinks more recruits will magically appear.

Ex-PH2

Remember the original RoboCop movie? It was filmed in Detroit, and much of it was in those burned-out, deserted auto assembly plants that had been abandoned for decades.

That was over 30-some years ago, 1987 if I remember rightly. Detroiters finally got tired of the crap and started pulling themselves and their city together, and it is slowly coming back to itself.

The point? No one drove the Detroit cops or firefighters out and the city is slowly reviving itself. But in the time between the reboot and now, the only work available in many instances was small businesses.
It’s not that a city can’t come back. It’s that the people who run it have to want to make it work, and I don’t think any of these current bozo libby mayors have a clue about that.
But Detroit is slowly reclaiming itself and may some day be MoTown again.

Penguinman000

It’s amazing what a group of Americans can do for themselves when the government gets out of their way. Regardless of melanin content, native language, or religious belief. We are a resilient people who root for the underdog and can make things happen.

Speaking of that neck of the woods, I’m still waiting to see a few government officials (local, state and fed) get stretched from a yardarm for the water situation in Flint. Makes my blood boil every time I think about it.

SFC D

Leadership 101: A leader is responsible for everything done by their subordinates, good or bad. When the city council fails, the mayor fails, and the people lose.

Not that I’d expect an officer of your caliber to understand leadership.

Commissar

That is not how equal branches of government work, dumbass.

I can see how that would confuse you because you support a unitary presidency. A despot.

But the way it is supposed to work is the city council is a sperate and EQUAL branch of government,

The mayor is not the “leader” of the city council.

Just like the President is not the “leader” of Congress.

A president shows leadership with respect to congress by pressuring them and drawing attention to what he thinks they should do.

Which is exactly what she is doing.

Most of what the commie guy wrote is misleading. The mayor absutely is in favor of cutting the police and their budget, she simply disagreed with the city council on how to do it.

The council voted to cut strength by 100 officers. Under Seattle’s seniority rules that meant getting rid of all the new Social Justice hires. The mayor wants to get rid of senior officers (and cut them out of their retirement) and keep the new SJ hires. That was the only reason for the vetos. Dont lose hope commie guy, She still wants to defund the popo.

The council might have a good idea. Get rid of the boot cops that come from a basically defective age group, aka the “me, me, me” post millennials who want the participation awards and such. Those types are predisposed not to follow orders well on the whole, and do what they want.

This whole mess would be worth it if that twat mayor ended up getting barbecued alive in front of her house.
