Grillin’ and Chillin’

| September 30, 2020

Time to lighten up, Francis, in this over-heated political time, and discuss something REALLY important. The Economy? Health Care? The Debate? Nope. Is it grilling, or is it BBQ? Seems in my home state a kerfuffle has arisen between North Carolina Senate Republican Thom Tillis, and Democrat Candidate Cal Cunningham. Who’s right?

North Carolina Democrat opposing GOP’s Thom Tillis sparks BBQ-vs.-grilling controversy with tweet

‘Carolina bbq means whole hog,’ one critic wrote. ‘You’re grilling bro. Not even close to the same thing.’
By Brie Stimson

A U.S. Senate candidate in North Carolina sparked a controversy of sorts this week with a tweet in which he appeared to conflate barbecuing with grilling, an apparent no-no in the Tar Heel state.

“There’s nothing better than BBQ—except for winning this Senate seat, of course,” Democrat Cal Cunningham tweeted Monday — along with a photo of himself in front of a backyard grill. He also appeared to be selling campaign aprons saying “Ambassador for North Carolina BBQ.”

Cunnigham is running against Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, who has held the seat since January 2015.

One Twitter critic wrote, “Fun fact: Carolina bbq means whole hog. You’re grilling bro. Not even close to the same thing.”

“He’s grilling over gas? Is there time to get my absentee ballot back?” another joked.

Even the media was thrown into a tizzy over the food faux pas.

“Sir. Respectfully, unless there is a hog hiding in that gas grill, the only BBQ in this photo is written on your apron. #blasphemy,” Associated Press political reporter Meg Kinnard tweeted.

The North Carolina Republican Party also called the tweet a “scandal.”

Leave it to politicians to go hyperbolic, but this is a subject worthy of the term. Every Southern good old boy knows true BBQ is over live coal, banked just so, and entails a long, slow cooking process that renders the collagen hiding inside the meat, turning the beast of choice into a luscious, juicy, bit of heaven. The trick is time and temperature, but that’s for another post.
Sorry Thom, good for you I’m not a one-issue voter. Read the article here: Fox News

I believe I’ve found a subject Gun Bunny and I can agree on. Thanks, ninja.

I grew up in Hawaii; my favorite barbecue is kalua pig and Korean gal bi ribs…so I have no meat in this fight…

On the political side, I hope Tillis beat the shit out of the demonrat…

There’s a third and fourth ingredient. Smoke and rub or sauce. The type of wood gives a whole different flavor.

Thank You, AW1Ed!

Still cracks me up on a memory of meeting folks from the White Plains, NY, who invited the ninja family to a BBQ event.

We had visions of mouth-watering pulled pork, ribs, brisket…

And were taken back when we showed up at a park where the community had gas-grills..and the family had cooked hamburgers and hotdogs…🤔

They really thought they were cooking Southern BBQ…when we asked them if they enjoy North Carolina BBB with Vinegar (Our Favorite!!) or Texas/Kansas style, we were met with dumbfounded looks…” Whatcha talkin about Willis!”…

Sheesh..

Combat Historian…Ahh, Kalua Pig…so good!

Authentic Chili: Beans or No Beans?

Beans or no beans?

Sadly my wife is a “no beans”…it’s really her only character flaw other than her fondness for yours truly apparently…

No beans….what in the hell is this world coming to?

What in the cotton pig pickin’, everloving, Sam Hill, wide world of sports, you are WAAAAYY yonder not very cunning on ham, kinda misuse of terminology are you spewing. Before I go all Maverick on your azz, and cook your goose, you better put that kinda trash talk on ice, man. You gonna get a volley of kicks to the balls that’ll leave a grease stain all over the beach and lose every loving feeling you ever had.

I’ll be John Brown if ol Tom Dooly ain’t just hanging his head down…and crying. You call yourself a NC Tar Heel Boy Cantcookspam? Nah, I don’t think so. Rhode Island…maybe; they do a little grilling there…I think…on a roller at a gas station. Only meat you know anything about is that tennie weenie you got your hand on underneath your apron. Your other apron is prolly white laced and goes just smashingly with your Up Stairs Maid Outfit. And an Army Vet? Phttttui!!! Even if you could warm up some C Rats, you’d take the ham & M’thers since demonrats like to eat their own kind. Doubt very seriously if you could guard The Mustang Ranch in Vegas, much less do anything worthwhile inside there. Soon as you LOSEr this election, you may can find gainful employment as an apprentice towel fluffer at Brucie’s Bath House (Entrance in the Rear)!

Hit the donate button Callie, and we might let you show up here around 1300hrs (that’s 1:00pm for you Dippy) on a Thursday. You might learn something. Dumbass!

Be a good boy and tell your wife to go make me a sammich…and bring me a Yuengling!

I am not so big a snob as to care whether or not he is cooking “whole hog” or “butts” however using a gas grill instead of a pit is inexcusable and he had better have vinegar based sauce to go with it and not some tomato or mustard based nonsense. Cal better stay away from Lexington if he is going to try any of that garbage.

Wow!

But so very typical. Anyone who tries to educate others on topics about which they know nothing invites scorn from those who do, or even others who know enough to not opine about that which they know nothing.

Meanwhile, even I know just enough about cooking to know that grilling uses a grill and BBQ uses a smoker. Or something like that.

(Somebody in the family had a recipe for “faux BBQ” that involved a crock pot, a hunk of pork, and some other stuff that was quite tasty and at least involved slow cooking. Good stuff actually.)

Let’s not confuse things by asking just what Ausies mean by a “Barbie.”
