He actually said this.

The support I see for BLM, on social media, appear to come from Democrats. They are the same side of the argument that wants to increase restrictions on obtaining and using a firearm. Enjoy your weekend.

Commissioner Wretched

Darn if I didn’t get here on time and STILL find the King of Battle in his customary FIRST position! All hail KoB!! I bow with respect to your first-ness! In supplication I offer the weekly trivia column, on time for once. Enjoy! DID YOU KNOW…? Was a professional baseball player also a spy during World War II? By Commissioner Wretched Halloween is coming! Now, whether or not traditional trick-or-treating will be permitted during this (seemingly never-ending) COVID-19 nonsense is still up in the air, but I thought I’d go ahead and let you know what I’m thinking of as far as a costume for this year. I have narrowed it down to two things: A white sweatshirt with different colored dots, so I can be a game of Twister; or A cardboard box covered with a tablecloth and a lampshade for my head, as a “one nightstand.” Interpret that any way you want. I’d ask for your votes in e-mail, but let’s be realistic – I’m 62 years old. I should be handing out candy, not dressing up. Of course, I probably won’t do that either, since I’m also something of a cheapskate. What I will do is offer you some trivia, right now! Did you know … … police dogs are trained to react to commands in a foreign language? The idea, of course, is so that the criminal can’t order the dog off of them. Many languages are used, but German is the most common. (And learning German just to avoid police dogs won’t help – with the luck most crooks have, the dog will know Russian.) … polygamy is legal in Iran? In that nation, a man can marry up to four wives. Once married, an Iranian girl can no longer go to high school. The legal age for marriage in Iran is 15 for boys and 13 for girls. (Just what any man needs – four mothers-in-law.) … during the Civil War, battlefield news was delayed in reaching the President? As the war progressed, President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) had to go across the street from… Read more »

Moe Berg was also a gifted linguist—he could speak several languages. A baseball pundit (Casey Stengel, maybe) said,

Thought Polygamy was legal in other Countries as well ?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_polygamy

Thank You again for the Trivia!

Commissioner Wretched

It is … I specifically mentioned Iran because of the other two items – the age to get married and the fact that a girl has to quit school when she does so. And the four mothers-in-law was just the icing on the cake.

rgr769

Polygamy is legal in most Muslim countries because their primary religious book says having up to four wives is Allah’s plan. I guess Mighty Mo was an amateur when compared to Brigham Young’s 23 wives. But then Mo had all those captured female slaves he could rape.

Another FIRST Class job on the trivia CW, you da Man! And always, a Time on Target delivery, muchly appreciated by all. Who do you like for the World Series? Asking for Pete, he may want to make a small wager.

My plan for Beg-O-Ween is to be at the K Roger Store FIRST thing in the morning after to get me a deal on enough candy to last until Valentines Day. They normally run a 75% off deal.

It’s odd that so many liberals and wimmins are latching onto the whole mooselem thing when that religion is one of the MOST oppressive to wimmins. And DAAAAAAAYYUUUM I understand having more than 1 wife but not at one time. Help me Lawd, Hab mercy!

But then again, on the subject of the Open Thread, I find it hard that so many people seem to be rushing toward a Socialistic and or Communistic form of Government here. When our form of Government falls, dumbasses, there will no longer be a Free Sh^t Army. Your days of being a useful idiot are over.

Commissioner Wretched

The Series? When the Cubs were knocked out of the playoffs, I pulled for the Braves … now with both gone, I hope the Rays win. I simply don’t like the Dodgers.

KoB

^Word^ CW! I don’t follow very much of it at all, but was surprised the Braves made some playoffs, but NOT surprised when they choked and blew it…AGAIN! SnL’s lawer firm has season tickets to all the Rays’ games and there is a good chance he and my Grandchildren will make a game or 3. His lawer firm does a lot of the legal work for the Tampa Teams of every sport.

Ethanol is a bucket of shit in a fancy wrapper. It takes thousands of gallons of water to distill one hundred gallons of ethanol, it cannot be reclaimed as it contains chemicals that require it to be treated as sewage and not just grey water….. Ethanol it is hard on fuel injectors, valves and piston heads and rings. It’s wrecked way more than one engine. The subsidies for ethanol are what Archer Daniel Midland used to build multi million dollar plants across the corn belt to produce ethanol. The corn being used for ethanol was used for feed for livestock. Basically, the rise in ethanol production reduced the feed availability for cattle, poultry and hogs thereby increasing the cost of meat for the consumer. Ethanol in gasoline cuts mileage as much as 15% so the same ten gallons of non-ethanol fuel will still take you farther than about 12 gallons of ethanolized fuel. Small engines hate ethanol, a lot of these throwaway Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engines could last for years longer than they will with ethanol in the fuel. It’s like the windmills, there is nothing green about wind power. The oil required to build them, by the time you build one there are well over fifty thousand gallons of fuel just to get the parts ready. And want to talk about the rare Earth metals and the strip mining that was outlawed in the US back in the 60’s, they now come from China and the Chicoms are raising the prices every day….. I wonder if the big guy is getting his 50% out of that ????? Windmills kill millions of birds, many of the Raptor type birds are especially vulnerable as the birds fly at higher altitudes than songbird and they don’t scan the sky in front of them when hunting, they are always looking down at the ground and cannot see the blades turning at high speeds when you figure the speed of the blades at the end Vs the speed at the hub. Spot on T’stixx nailed it. And yep, Graybeard ditto. ADM has made a bloody fortune on that scam, and is continuing to do so. I forget how much real gasoline it takes to make a gallon of E85 but it’s a bunch as ‘Stixx pointed out. I don’t burn it in my vehicles, at all, even when driving out there in the mid-west. Old boy down the road a piece sells 96 octane real gas, no ethanol at all. It’s a little more spendy per gallon, but my engines love it. And they’re worth it!

A Proud Infidel®™️

The one good thing about E85 fuel is that if your engine is built to use it, a tankful of it every now and then will clean the injectors and burn the soot deposits out.

Top 30, I ‘spose.

Cool front blew through the GB Compound AO early afternoon, bringing a much-needed 1.25″+ of rain.

With the cooler temps I got out to do some scouting & set up a game camera, as well as see if any squirrels were in those thrashing pines. Saw one, but never got a clear shot.

Did fair on my pistol drills this week but need more practice (and hence, more ammo!). With school in session we’ve not come up with a new schedule to work with the grandkids on their shooting – but I found a stash of .22LR that may let me run them through some targets this weekend if their schedules allow.

Y’all have a great weekend. Don’t take a single day for granted, or put off calling family and friends to keep in touch. Second chances are never guaranteed.

Graybeard

Update – got 2 grandkids out today with a .22 semi-auto pistol

Granddaughter #2’s 2nd time on the pistol, from bench at 10′, had a nice cluster in the black with one solid X, and only about 3 flyers in the edge of the target.

Grandson #3 wanted the target moved out to 25′, and didn’t do quite as good. Often low-left, but all on the paper.

Both review follow the 4 Rules safety steps, when they finished a string of fire they left the pistol open w/mag out while we checked their results. They do just about all of their own loading and preparing the pistol to fire.

Found out that Grandson #2’s eyesight is horrible – why he was having such issues when we tried to teach him. Eldest 2 grandkids do pretty good, but are more interested in college & learning to drive right now…

“Joe Buck: Fox Will ‘Find Out’ The Culprit Behind Flyover Leak Controversy”

https://nypost.com/2020/10/22/joe-buck-fox-will-find-out-who-leaked-flyover-audio/

“Fox is investigating who leaked a clip of NFL broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman talking about military flyovers before Sunday’s Packers-Buccaneers game — comments Buck says weren’t actually caught on hot mics and were taken out of context.”

“This was before our rehearsal … it was clipped by someone along the chain. … They are narrowing down who clipped and sold it,” Buck said on his “Daddy Issues” podcast, telling co-host Oliver Hudson that the network is investigating the incident after the clip drew backlash from people who thought he and Aikman were mocking the military.”

“They will find out who it is because that specific shot of that flyover, which I personally thought was old and a tape … it was actually live but it was not a Fox shot. They know whose shot that was and it was well before the game.”

“Buck explains that he and Aikman were reiterating comments made by people on their crew at a dinner the night before, clarifying that the two were mocking those two people and not the military.”

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2020/10/22/judge-permits-former-army-colonels-sex-assault-case-against-joint-chiefs-no-2/

“A federal judge on Thursday refused to dismiss a lawsuit alleging the vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff sexually assaulted a former top aide during a Southern California trip.”

“Air Force Gen. John Hyten has denied the allegations brought by former Army Col. Kathryn Spletstoser that he attacked her during a December 2017 trip to attend the Reagan National Defense Forum at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles.”

“At the time, Hyten commanded the United States Strategic Command, known at STRATCOM.”

“Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald in Los Angeles rejected defense motions to dismiss the case for lack of jurisdiction or to move the case to Nebraska, where STRATCOM is based.”

“However Hyten, who was confirmed last September as the nation’s second highest-ranking military officer, flatly denied Spletstoser’s claims during his confirmation hearing.”

“Spletstoser served in the Army for 28 years and carried out four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her assault and sexual battery lawsuit alleged that while staying at a hotel during the Simi Valley trip, Hyten grabbed her, kissed her, fondled her buttocks and rubbed himself against her.”

“The lawsuit was amended from an original complaint that alleged Hyten sexually assaulted her at least nine times in 2017, including during trips to California, London, South Korea and elsewhere and that he retaliated against for refusing his advances by harming her career and eventually forcing her to retire.”

Devtun

The colonel is full of it IMO. Probably upset she didn’t make general officer. The protection detail for the STRATCOM commander is so strict that the 4 star officer essentially lives in a gilded cage. He/She is not permitted to be alone w/ anyone other than immediate family members, the POTUS, SECDEF, CJCS, and a small number of other very senior officials. A couple republican senators brought this up at Gen Hyten’s confirmation hearing.

Question for the younger crowd of Soldiers. Was this something that you ever came to use in garrison at the rifle range?:

Practice Bolt (M16/M4) for Plastic Ammunition M862 (5.56)

Was this something the Army monkeyed with or was it sort of an Air Force thing?

Army TM 9-6920-746-12&P (9 Sep 86) and Air Force TO 11W3-5-5-31. There was a Marine Corps TM6920-12&P, but it was deleted by a Change in 1992.

Thanks for any input.

Claw

Disregard, after conducting a little research, I see this was something not intended to be used at the rifle range, but at limited close quarters battle drill facilities.

Admins, you can delete this comment if you want./s

The Stranger

I’m not sure if it’s the same part (probably not) but we were issued modified bolts for our rifles to fire practice ammo for battle drills in clearing buildings when I went through Basic in 2011. One of the guys in my squad shot a Drill Sergeant in an adjacent building during the exercise when he saw movement in a window. It was like getting hit with a souped up paintball from the sounds of it. Hey, you take your laughs where you can get them.

Claw

From what I’ve read, that is the same part. The bolt is modified to grasp the slightly smaller casing of the plastic round and it changes the function of the weapon from being gas operated to a blow back feature when the plastic ammo is used.

Thankx for responding.

rgr769

I think this bolt is for what is known as a simunition. The 9mm rounds have been used for years by police forces in training. It is essentially a 9mm paint ball round. I guess the Army has something similar for the M-4/M-16. They can only be used with body armor, face shields and goggles, cuz they could definitely shoot out an eye.

Google “simunition” and you can get to the company’s website the makes the stuff along with the gun parts to shoot it.

We live in an area relatively untouched by this China virus thingy. Even so, several of my favorite haunts have closed permanently, others temporarily, a museum with which I am associated delayed it’s reopening (closed due to pre-China virus water damage), and reduced hours of operation of a multitude of other businesses. Oh, yeah, and having to remember to carry a face covering every where since you never know when you might need/want one.

This entire mess is a very interesting study in the myriad ways we humans can/will adapt to the strange and unusual as well as the circumstances we simply will not tolerate.

Oh, well. I found myself wondering a few days ago if my face covering matched my socks. Why? Perhaps because it is one of the few things over which I had complete control. Or something.
