Russian Sub Toys With US Navy

| August 31, 2020

Thanks to Skippy, we have even more news about how bold the Russians are getting to be these days.

An unnamed Russian sub surfaced in Alaskan waters. (It is not the sub pictured below, sorry.)

From the article: ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A Russian submarine surfaced near Alaska on Thursday during a Russian war game exercise, U.S. military officials said.  It was unclear why it surfaced.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command are closely monitoring the submarine, Northern Command spokesman Bill Lewis said.

“We have not received any requests for assistance from the Russian Navy or other mariners in the area,” Lewis said from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. “We always stand ready to assist those in distress.”

Lewis declined to provide further details about the submarine, including its proximity to Alaska. He only said it was operating in international waters near Alaska.

So Vlad Putin is getting frisky, sort of like his distant predecessor Nikita Krushcheve did when Jack Kennedy was in the White House. If you were around back then, you may recall that little episode of Soviet friskiness referred to as the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, and the subsequent blockade  of Soviet ships by the US Navy, under orders from President Kennedy.

https://www.politico.com/story/2009/10/kennedy-imposes-naval-blockade-of-cuba-oct-22-1962-028584

From Politico:

The president said the United States would not exclude using military force to end what he called a “clandestine, reckless and provocative threat to world peace.” Thus opened the public phase of the Cuban missile crisis. For the next six days, it threatened to precipitate a nuclear war between the world’s two superpowers. The Joint Chiefs of Staff, who had advised Kennedy to order a “surgical” strike to take out the missiles, put U.S. military forces around the world on DEFCON 2, the highest military alert ever reached in the postwar era.

Those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end….

Sounds like a scene from the Hunt For Red October. Nice of Northern Command to offer assistance to anyone who needs it. I think Vlad just got played.

we see you, you know we see you, you know we know you know we see you, etc… song remains the same.

For an absolute classic cold war spy thriller, read “The Defection of A.J. Lewinter” by Robert Littel. One of those ‘to make them think we think he’s bogus let’s try to kill him to show we take hm seriously so they will second guess it and think he’s crap’ sort of things.
one of the great spy novels of all time.

With only 63 days left until election day, I’m sure the Rooskies are just checking off their “Things To Do To Screw With America a Little Bit” list on a Short-Timers Calendar./s

A submarine will surface for two reasons.

It meant to.

It didn’t mean to. Oops.

I wouldn’t read too much into this. Likely a scheduled break between exercise phases, or some such. All part of the plan.

Somebody hit the emergency blow button? Ballast tanks spring a leak? Ballast tanks were filled with vodka and they drank up too much of it? Too many servings of beans, beets, and cabbages cause the crew to get overly gassy, causing a change from negative buoyancy to positive buoyancy? Skipper announce swim period? How about this; from another JAG Episode, the Russkies launched a new test torpedo with a defective guidance package, the torp did a u turn and started back toward the sub?

No, No,No,No! The Russian Navy is Colluding with the Yankee Imperialists so they can all justify their phony baloney jobs!

Remember the Cuban Missile “Crisis” quite well. Robins AFB (SAC Wings) right down the road, Naval Ordnance Plant along with other defense facilities here. Four Nike/Herc Nuclear Missile Anti Aircraft Batteries surrounding it all. Got in trouble for telling the teachers that the whole “duck and cover” under the desk was not going to do any of us a bit of good when the ICBMs came raining down. The lucky ones would be vaporized by the initial air burst, the rest would be dead of radiation poisoning, very painfully, in just a few days. They failed to appreciate the knowledge that I had. Mama said I shouldn’t show people that I was smarter than they were; it pisses them off. Had to write an essay on why I should not smart off to the teachers. Got into more trouble when I wrote it as “Why I should Not Be Smarter Than The Teachers.” Good Times. And yes. I have been a little smartass all of my life.

I have zero recollection of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was born in the middle of it. Dad (CAPT D at the time) nearly missed the event because he was living in the alert shack with the rest of the B-52 crews at the time. They couldn’t go anywhere unless they went as a crew, so the entire gang piled into a truck, headed for the Wurtsmith AFB hospital, and waited for baby D.

I was living in Arlington, Va. during the Cuban missile crisis. Within walking distance of the Pentagon. Then again, I had spent all my life living within spitting distance of some “ground zero”, so I wasn’t terribly concerned.

Like you, I was familiar with the effects of nuclear weapons; I read “Hiroshima” by John Hersey in 5th grade (a mistake) and was a regular viewer of “The Big Picture”, etc.

I just had to include this because it was produced by “The National Clean Up – Paint Up – Fix Up Bureau”. Evidently making regular trips to Home Depot and keeping your home neat and tidy will enable you to get through a nuclear war with minimal discomfort.

Alaskian waters?

International waters or not?

Fyrfighter

It must be collusion between Putin and President Trump to intimidate Alaskans into voting for him…

How’d I do with my Commissar impression??

The Other Whitey

Not random or dumb enough. Also, you used proper spelling and diction, with complete sentences. You would also need to write at least a 700-line rant to be convincing.

KoB

Fyr, ya needs more profanity too. And don’t forget to mention the cultists. And the empirical data. And make it as a reply to a comment so you can add the personal attack on said cultist.

Other than all that and what TOW pointed out…you made a good start.

rgr769

Not enough verbiage. You need at least five paragraphs, each with a half dozen run-on sentences with a few mistyped words, expressing the same idea five different ways. Plus, you didn’t have five OrangeManBad statements. Your impersonation isn’t worth two Soros-bucks.

USMC STEVE

Strictly bush league, dude. Try harder. More words and stuff.

A Proud Infidel®™

Nope, no accusations of US being the brainwashed Trump cultists!

Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH B Woodman

“It was unclear why it surfaced.”
Obviously, to “poke the eagle” without causing outright war.
So the US should send a ship (not being a squid, not clear what type of ship to send) to knock on the hatch (figuratively – one ping or two?) and ask, “need any assistance?”

MIKE GUENTHER

Maybe slid a Seawolf class up under it and knock on the hull
