New ID cards coming for retirees, dependents

| August 28, 2020

For the first time in almost 30 years, the DOD is changing the ID card. It looks a lot like the CAC many will be familiar with, but is for those who do not rate a CAC. From the DOD;

The Department of Defense is transitioning from its current paper-based Uniformed Services Identification (USID) card to a more secure, next generation USID card. The Next Generation USID card will incorporate an updated design and security features to deter counterfeiting and fraud, and will be printed on a plastic cardstock. Initial issuance of the Next Generation USID card will begin on July 31, 2020 at select DoD ID card facilities, with phased implementation at all DoD ID card facilities projected to be complete in December 2020.

and from Stars and Stripes;

[DOD spokespersons] said it’s possible in the future that physical cards might not be needed as much and the DoD might shift towards digital IDs.

Not gonna hold my breath on that one.

So I won’t have to get mine until 2037 when my current retiree ID expires?
A word on that, they really don’t think I’ll look any different until I’m 65? Those current cards they use aren’t that expensive. I just thought that was curious when I got it at the end of Jan 2019 when I got it.
I figure It’s all moot anyway. . . the upcoming Biden administration will push ahead with the nationwide forehead bar scan initiative so we can be scanned as we get our government beets at the food line Bernie is so fond of.

They had to do it because of all the retired and disabled vets cutting
the line at theaters and terrorizing BX employees.
It was an obvious backdoor for our enemies.

“in the future that physical cards might not be needed”

Chip in the forehead?

Nah ‘beans, the tracking/ID Chip will be included in your mandatory COVID19 vaccine. Brought to you courtesy of Microsoft, verified by Facebook, and delivered by Amazon. Made in Wuhan China.

Injections start 4 Nov 2020. Mail in your request for early vaxxing. Vax early, vax often. Even the dead can vax.

When CAC first came out the cost comparison was 14 cents for the old green ID cards compared to $7 dollar for the CAC. The green card would last until end of enlistment or ETS or Indefinite. CACs were good for 3 years due to the lifespan of the electronics in them. And if your Base/Post ever got a bad batch not that long. I had to get a new retired ID card a while back when they decided to remove SSN from them in favor of the DOD ID #. It only took them 50 years to resurrect serial numbers. Did they do a mass reissue of dog tags for the DOD ID number?

There are still too many folks running around ‘all balls and no forehead” so the chips will have to go elsewhere. Think they’ll go with personal QR codes and every cellphone will be a scanner. After all they can already track your location with them.

I wonder, will they be replacing veteran ID cards? Can you get replacement dog tags?
Inquiring minds want to know???

26Limabeans

They should go back to the old RA and US numbers.
No one in the history of man has ever forgotten
their serial number.
You can lose your tags but that number is tatooed
in your head forever.

“Can you get replacement dog tags?”

8465-00-242-4804 Tag, Identification Unit of Issue: Each QUP (Quantity Unit Pack) contains 100 each

7490-00-688-9866 Embossing Machine, Address Plate

Some Assembly Required – Side Note – Always had a machine and tags in my S-4 Shops. Replacement tags made on the spot, troops didn’t have to try to go to Battalion S-1/Division G1 and get hassled./smile

Claw

But if you might think the machine just sat in the back corner of my shop gathering dust from not being used too often, think again./s

It got a lot of use, especially by the company physical security/key custodians and the supply sergeants who always seemed to want to renumber the arms room racks and gas masks.

My card is a “Forever” Card (No Expiration Date) and to me Forever means Forever.

I guess I’ll find out next year when we go down south to the NG Battalion HQ’s to get the wife’s “Forever” card whether I need a new one or not./s

Bill R.

Just got mine replaced a couple years ago to get rid of SSAN. It also changed from INDEF toexpiring when I turn 65, which is approaching much faster than I care for.

My old retiree card from ’91 is just fine. I looked better back then. Also solid proof that I had hair at one point in my life.

I don’t know why we need to use CACs when all new computers and smartphones have face scan.

We are always a few tech generations behind….

There is even an start-up working on smelled DNA ID scan. That’s really crazy tech. Think of the military and law enforcement applications…

I wonder how long it will take before they come up with the (again) brilliant idea that in order to access any of the sites that we use as retiree’s, we will need a CAC reader on our home computers. They rolled it out while I was still in the Guard and it failed horribly, but I suspect this “new” ID card is a precursor to them trying again. Funny that they say the roll out date was July 31st – simply because I just got my blue age 60 ID card a few weeks ago and nothing was said. Considering that I got it at what will soon be the largest KC135 base in the US, you would think they would he ahead of the game (I know, I should know better after being there for 27 years)

As a contractor with a CAC as my contract requires me to access the Govt network, it is much easier to use it to access some of the retiree type websites. While I can use a login and a password on them several require periodic changes of passwords and keeping track of them is a royal pain in the arse.

I get it about CAC (Cards : ATM Machine!) I have one for NASA and it’s great to only have to remember a 4 digit PIN. (Number). No need to make a “Whip out my CAC” joke, I’ve already done it 1,000 times and it’s kinda old.

I too have a pink reserve retired ID card and it suits me fine. It’s also Indefinite.
I’d go get a new one if it were easy and my hair hasn’t started looking like Frankie Cee, because I haven’t cut it since Valentines Day.
1. Because my Vietnamese barber girl hasn’t been back online since around June and I didn’t drive 1/2 an hour down to the Columbia MD area to see then until I had to go get my oil changed (she’s right next door), and because we haven’t been driving, it’s gone long….and 2. Because I’m a crotchety older “young” guy who has about had it with Covid so I’m using this as a reason to grow my hair as long as it’s ever been, even high school and to rebel and also because I can and it looks kinda interesting all curly in the back so, WTF, I’m going for it. Maybe one day I’ll grow up and be nearly half as cool as Frankie Cee.

Skippy

You have a pink retired ID card ???
Mine is blue I wonder why that is
