Armed Man Uses Uberti 1866 Rifle to Stop Black Bear

by Guy J. Sagi
Bill Williams was recently forced to shoot and kill a 250-pound black bear with his Uberti 1866 Yellowboy carbine—chambered in .45 Long Colt—that invaded his Colorado cabin at 3 a.m.

“It sounded like an explosion when he slammed the window open,” said Williams. “I grabbed the Yellowboy and walked to the opening from the bedroom to the living room. We don’t have a door to separate the rooms. With the front porch light coming through the windows, I could see the bear on the couch, just 42 inches from me. I cranked off the first round and hit him. He jumped down from the couch and stood up in front of me about three feet away. I shot him twice more and he fell back to the other side of the room.”

Williams could see the bear was still moving and was forced to shoot several more times. After reloading, his wife Stephanie handed Williams a flashlight, and he put a final round into the bear, ending the threat.

Williams lives in Conroe, TX, but he and his wife, Stephanie, summer in the small, 400-square-foot cabin in Colorado. “Ninety six percent of this county is national forest land,” he said. “In the 23 years we have had this cabin, we have never had any problems with animals. Although, we have seen signs of them passing through our property.”

Woman allegedly shoots child’s father in self-defense

DECATUR, Ill. (WICS/WCCU) — A Decatur woman shot her child’s father in an act of self defense, according to police.

The 33-year-old father was shot in the torso by his child’s mother, who claimed she was defending herself as he was attacking her when she sat in her vehicle.

The man’s injury was deemed non-life threatening. The child’s mother had injuries on her face, which police said was consistent with being hit several times.

Police said she had a previous head injury and has a shunt in her head, which makes being hit in the head more dangerous.

The child’s mother was arrested for a weapons offense related to her not having a concealed carry license. However, she wasn’t charged for the shooting.

The child’s father was arrested for vehicle invasion and domestic battery.

My sympathies are with the bear. Bears were living there a loooooooong time before homeboy came up from Texas to “Summer” in CO. #BearLivesMatter.

Sympathies also to the lady charged with defending herself from a piece of sh^t. How do they know the weapon was concealed? Hope the POS catches himself a really nice infection in the hospital.

Only 5 killed and 51 wounded in Chitcongo this weekend? Y’all hood rats are slipping. Anybody keeping up with the year to date totals?

IMO there should be a lot of laws that are null and void.

I still gots a P-38 from my time in the pickle suit. Hanging on my dog tag chain. I’ll see your Walther P-38 and raise you a Chapter and Verse from the Book of the Most Saintly JMB (Howitzer be his name)

Story from Colorado:
Lady in her new log cabin in the mountains calls NFS: “There’s a bear in my back yard.”
NFS employee: “That’s funny, I just got a call from a bear complaining that there is a house in his front yard.”

FWIW, where my brother-in-law spends his summers in CO (working) the bears are a problem in town. When we get out in the mountains proper we’ve never had problems.

Walther P38 – Dad preferred how they shot over the more popular Lugers and the 1911’s they were issued. Had one he liberated from a German officer and he really enjoyed it.

It also had a lot of safety features that were not common – including a loaded-chamber indicator that works better than most things I’ve seen on more modern firearms.

Personal preference thing… all the weight in the hand, whippy barrel. Me, I like some weight out front to stabilize things, as in JMB’s designs.

I should clarify that Dad’s criteria for “better” was how well he could shoot it and how reliable it was.

He shot better than Expert with the Walther, although he was good with the 1911.

I never noticed anything “whippy” about the barrel, personally. The main gripe I have with the P38 is the DA trigger pull is “lawyer-proof” to the extreme (although that was not the concern during the war). I have no problems getting it back on target after a round, and accuracy is as good as my EDC .45ACP.

YMMV

My S&W Mod. 14 .38 with its 6 IN. barrel was like that until I weighted it down with a Bowmar rib, front and rear target sights put on and used it for the Police El matches I shot at while on our companies pistol team.

Waiting for photos of the Walther PPK in 7.65 (.32 ACP). Not the new Walther (Ft. Smith) with extended “beaver tail” chambered in .380.

A more beautiful pistol I have never seen; though, the Mauser HSc is a close second.

It wasn’t the time to start singing Running Bear with the bear in the cabin and those are the bear facts.
Running Bear by Johnny Preston on mercury 1959. Great novelty song. Try it out 26 Lima.

I have one of those P38s (French? Manurhin P1). Bought it at the Army Rec Center Gun Club (or whatever it was) while statoned in Germany (lo, those too many decades ago).
It likes factory loads. I tried to shoot a hand load that turned out to be a little “hot”, and the recoil cracked the slide. Took me a while to find/buy another from an online outfit that was selling salvage parts from other Walther P38/Manurhin P1.
As david said, light whippy barrel, but I like it ok anyway.
