A Friendly Gesture Would Be Nice….

| August 14, 2020

Twitter screengrab

The Spanish government in its wisdom, decided back in March that sending in Spanish troops in special uniforms to fight the Covid-19 bug would be the proper weapon to deploy against a truly horrendous invisible enemy.

I have to agree.

https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/military-culture/2020/03/24/spain-deploys-men-in-deep-v-necks-and-leather-suspenders-to-stave-off-covid-19/

From the article:  Years-old images of barrel-chested Spanish Legion soldiers are making the rounds online, with scores of U.S. citizens enduring coronavirus-induced social distancing clamoring for the nation to loan any of its uniformed amigos to reinvigorate an existence dominated by pestilence.

American citizens looked for the helpers, as Fred Rogers recommended, and have found their champions.

“We will comply with your orders.” – articles

I would have to agree that this could be a reasonable and thoughtful response to the invasive, and invisible, enemy known as Covid-19. It’s almost like one of those spy novels where you don’t know the spy’s real name because if he told you, he’d have to shoot you.

As I understand it, from Georgette Heyer’s descriptions of the Peninsular Wars through her main characters, the Portuguese were much more volatile and difficult to command than the Spanish troops.  And here come the troops to chase off the Savages…. or something like that.

Happy Friday, one and all, and don’t let the political nitwits get you down.  Just smile and nod, dear.

I prefer the Swedish Bikini Team and/or South Korean baseball cheerleaders.

But that’s just me.

KoB

TOW, you mean like this?

The Other Whitey

Yes.

Mason

How about this one, KoB?

KoB

Nope, not going there. It’s a trap!

“Old Millwater” Beer, remember that from high school and college, NEVER lowered myself to Pud (*OOPS!*, Bud) Light!

It looks like a herd of angry homosexual storm troopers. If they sneeze, they will crush their own nuts.

The Other Whitey

Camel toe is generally unbecoming of a male under any circumstances.

My first reaction to that photo is: I bet their theme song is the Village People’s “YMCA.”

A Proud Infidel®™

They look more like Bouncers or Dancers from Guillermo’s Gay Bar!

I think I can speak for all pecs, abs, biceps, and hard bodied deficient men everywhere when we say that’s rayciss and non inclusive. Some of us can cook too,and have ice cream you know that…doncha?

Y-M-C-A!

Dan

They were shitty soldiers in the sandbox. Lazy, poor weapon discipline and tactically inept.

rgr769

But, “they look absolutely fabulous when on parade.” (said with a slight lisp)

Slow Joe

That’s strange.
They don’t look European.
I have been to Barcelona, Asturias, and Madrid, and the people there looked European.
Those guys look Colombian or Venezuelan.

Mason

There’s a reason. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Legion#Modern_legion

They probably aren’t European and are South/Central American.

Those pictures are from 2013:

The Soldiers in the 2013 pictures are with the Spanish Foreign Legion.

Yup, Spanish Legion, or “Tercios”. One of the engagements they were involved with was the Spanish Civil War.

Speaking of which, I ran into a video showing a parade celebrating the victors of that war:

Thank You, thebesig, for the video.

Research indicates Women also serve with the Spanish Foreign Legion.

This 2018 article also discusses the absence of the top button on their uniform (as well as the Spanish Foreign Legion fighting the battle of “the bulge”:

If you read the links within your linked article, one discovers that the Spanish military is not friendly to females, which are only about 12% of the force. Apparently, machismo is still strong in Spain. One woman was court-martialed for leaving her post for less than 24 hours to get an abortion.

Mason

I don’t know if you can go by that statistic alone to gauge. Our military isn’t much different. Latest stats I can find for women in the service are;

*Air Force 20%
*Army 19%
*Navy 15%
*Marines 9%

Slow Joe

I read through all that crap about the Spanish legion.

They are only 8000 strong.
Tercios are battalions, Banderas (flags) are companies.

The uniforms are unique in the Spanish military.

Unlike the French foreign legion, they only recruit Spanish speakers with no criminal background. Permanent residence is also a requirement.

They claim all kinds of honors, but their combat record seems very shitty to me.

Personally, I wouldn’t trust them with cutting the grass in front of the CSM office.

Mason

Apparently the Spanish Army is rife with silly uniforms.

They really love their black leather suspenders. Who knew “belt and suspenders” was a military uniform strategy.

rgr1480

Unlike the French Foreign Legion, the Spanish Foreign Legion has GIRLS!

Though, their V-neck shirts don’t go down *that* low!
